Abstract:Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) beams are a promising alternative to conventional radiotherapy due to their highly penetrating nature and their applicability as a modality for FLASH (ultra-high dose-rate) radiotherapy. The dose distributions due to VHEE need to be optimised; one option is through the use of quadrupole magnets to focus the beam, reducing the dose to healthy tissue and allowing for targeted dose delivery at conventional or FLASH dose-rates. This paper presents an in depth exploration of the focusing achievable at the current CLEAR (CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research) facility, for beam energies >200 MeV. A shorter, more optimal quadrupole setup was also investigated using the TOPAS code in Monte Carlo simulations, with dimensions and beam parameters more appropriate to a clinical situation. This work provides insight into how a focused VHEE radiotherapy beam delivery system might be achieved.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the method of utilizing very high energy electron beams (VHEE) for focused dose delivery in radiation therapy. Specifically, the study explores how to optimize dose distribution by focusing VHEE beams using quadrupole magnets, reducing the dose to healthy tissues, and achieving targeted dose delivery. The research conducted experiments at CERN's CLEAR facility and used Monte Carlo simulations (TOPAS code) to study shorter, more clinically applicable quadrupole magnet setups. The main objectives include: 1. **Demonstrate the possibility of VHEE beam focusing**: Achieve different depths of focus by varying the strength of the last quadrupole magnet. 2. **Optimize the focusing system**: Investigate different vacuum beam pipe diameters and quadrupole magnet spacings to improve focusing effectiveness. 3. **Evaluate the performance of focused VHEE beams in a water phantom**: Show how adjusting quadrupole magnet parameters can improve focusing effects. 4. **Feasibility for future clinical applications**: Lay the foundation for future VHEE radiation therapy centers, demonstrating that a compact quadrupole magnet system can achieve focused dose delivery to deep-seated tumors.
