Abstract:Co2C nanoprisms were developed for the Fischer-Tropsch to olefins (FTO) reaction a few years ago, while to the best of our knowledge, the study of the electronic promoters were hardly reported due to the instability of the Co2C nanostructures with promoters. The absence of the promoters limited the performance modulation and industrial application of the Co2C-based FTO catalysts. The work reported here was aimed at developing a new strategy to synthesize the Zn-promoted Co2C nanoprisms and understanding the electronic effects of the Zn promoters on the Co2C facets without confusion over the geometric effects. Detailed characterizations of the carbonized and spent samples suggested that the Zn promoters lowered the stability of the Co2C nanostructures and led to the formation of the surface Co-0 species in the spent samples with high Zn contents, which was responsible for the decrease of the O/P ratios and the increase of the CH4 selectivity. The XPS results showed that the electrons transferring from the Zn promoters to the Co2C facets enriched the density of the electron clouds of the Co species on the Co2C facets. Further evidence for the enhanced CO adsorption and dissociation routes were obtained from the measurements of the CO temperature-programmed desorption. The Zn promoters increased the strong adsorption sites, which were not active for the Boudouard reaction and the increase of the CO2 selectivity originated from the Water-Gas Shift reaction. The activation route of the adsorbed CO species on the strong adsorption sites was H-assisted dissociation rather than direct dissociation, resulting in the inhibition of the carbene-mediated routes and the shifting of product selectivity toward light hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The CexZr1-xO2 (x=0-1) composite oxides were prepared by sol-gel method, and then they were used as supportpr tp prepare PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The effect of Ce/Zr atomic ratio on the structure of crystalline phase, redox property and TWC catalytic activity of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxides and PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were studied. The results show that phase structure of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxide depends on the CeO2 content. The different Ce/Zr atomic ratio affects the catalytic activity of PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts much. In the reaction of NO-CO and CO-O-2, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalyst is the highest. However, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst is the highest in the reaction of CH4-O-2. The alpha: H-2-TPR peak is related probably to the NO-CO and CO-O-2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.

The different introduction of lanthana led to the different catalytic performance of Cu-La2O3/ZrO2 for methanol synthesis from syngas. In addition, the dispersion of CuO was improved by lanthana, which enhanced the activity of catalysts for methanol synthesis.

Abstract:The mesoporous carbon supported cobalt catalyst (15%Co/MC) was found to be more active and selective to C5+ than the traditionally activated carbon supported one (15%Co/AC) for the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The addition of small amount of K2O and ZrO2 significantly affected the FTS behavior of 15%Co/MC. The addition of 1% K inhibited the FTS activity dramatically, while the addition of 3% Zr increased the FTS activity significantly. The addition of K2O decreased the surface acidity while increased the surface basicity of 15%Co/MC, resulting in the increased heat of adsorption of CO and substantially decreased heat of adsorption of H2 on Co. In contrast, the addition of ZrO2 increased the surface acidity and heat of adsorption of H2 on Co. The FTS activity was found to be related to the ratio of heats for the adsorption of CO and H2 on the catalysts 15%Co/MC, 15%Co–1%K/MC and 15%Co–3%Zr/MC. The highest FTS activity was obtained on the catalyst with the heat ratio of 1.2.

Abstract:It is reported that Zirconium (Zr) is an effective promoter of cobalt-based catalysts for Fisher-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Numerous studies have been conducted to explore the nature of the promotion. However, many of these studies focus on oxide-supported cobalt-based catalysts, in which the support effects may have partially enhanced or masked the influences of Zr. In the present work, CoZr catalysts without oxide support have been prepared across a wide range of Zr/Co molar ratio from 0.04 to 0.33 to investigate the nature of the Zr promotion. Comparing with the nano-Co 3 O 4 , the promoted catalysts exhibit excellent performance. The reaction temperature required to convert the same amount of syngas on the same amount of cobalt has decreased by about 40 °C. The selectivity of C 5 + has increased from 70∼81% to over 85% at the same CO conversion, and even higher than 90% on the CoZr catalysts with high Zr/Co ratio. Evidences from multiple techniques, including in situ XPS, CO-DRIFTs, CO-TPD, NH 3 -TPD, Py-IR, HRTEM, Raman and XRD, shows that Zr tends to occupy the coordinately unsaturated sites of nano-Co 3 O 4 . After reduction, Zr enters the lattice of Co metal, leading to the lattice expansion. Benefitting from the Zr induced structural changes of the Co metal, CO adsorption and dissociation on the CoZr catalysts have been enhanced. Besides, due to the strong interaction between Co and Zr, the growth of the Co metal crystal during H 2 reduction and O atoms adsorption on the reduced catalysts surface are inhibited significantly, which make more Co atoms available during FTS reaction. As a result, the catalytic performances are improved obviously.

Abstract:Introducing promoters on cobalt-based catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) have been found efficient for adjusting their performance in converting syngas into long-chain hydrocarbons. Details of the promotion mechanism established on atomic precise identification upon the active sites structure as well as the electronic status is seldomly reported yet. In the present work, we report the direct identification of valence status and coordination configuration of ZrO2 promoter additive over the cobalt-based FTS catalysts under a wide range of Zr/Co molar ratios from 0.12 to 1.5. Evidences from multiple technologies, including in situ/ex situ atomic resolution STEM imaging, EDS elemental mapping, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), as well as physicochemical analyses (in situ XRD, CO chemisorption, CO temperature-programmed surface reaction, etc.) disclose that the ZrO2 promoter presents as single-site dispersion on the surface of Co nanoparticles (NPs) and the SiC support at low content, plays as the real active site to promote CO dissociation at the Co-ZrO2 interface. While at high ZrO2 content (Zr/Co molar ratio of 1.0), Zr species on the SiC support turns to nucleate to form an amorphous coating, whereas those on the Co NPs surface maintain monodispersion. When further increasing the ZrO2 content (Zr/Co molar ratio up to 1.5), cobalt NPs start to be encapsulated by ZrO2 coating, leading to the decline of FTS activity. The in situ EELS analysis and density functional theory calculations disclose that the Zr atom tends to bind at the Co NPs surface rather than embed into the lattice meanwhile a charge transfer from Zr species to Co NPs occurs, which facilitates the stronger interaction between Zr and cobalt and thus enhances the adsorption with the H2 molecule as well as the CO dissociation. Abstract:The performance of Cu/ZrO2 and Cu/La2O3/ZrO2 catalysts for methanol synthesis was studied. The structures of the catalysts were characterized by TPR, XRD, and UV-VIS spectroscopy. The different introduction of lanthana in Cu/ZrO2 improved the dispersion of CuO to a different degree, in which co-precipitation of lanthana was optimum for dispersion of CuO. CO hydrogenation results showed the existence of a corresponding relation between the activity of catalysts and CuO dispersion. Cu/ZrO2 promoted by lanthana in co-precipitation showed the highest activity.

Abstract:Ag promoted Co/Al2O3 Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts were preparation by wetness impregnation and characterized by nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, temperature programmed technologies and H-2 chemisorption. Their performances of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis were evaluated in a fixed bed reactor. The result indicated that Ag promoter can improve the dispersion of the cobalt species and facilitate the reduction of CoO to metallic Co. Ag significantly increases the CO conversion rate and C-5(+) selectivity of Fischer-Tropsch reaction, while decreases the production of methane. However, negative effects were found at higher level Ag loading. As a result, the presence of relatively small quantities of Ag additive can help to enhance the performance of Co/Al2O3 catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Abstract:FeMnxZr and FeMnxZr2Na catalysts prepared by coprecipitation and impregnation methods were applied to investigate the promoting effects of Zr on the iron-based catalyst for high-temperature Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (HTFT). Ar physisorption and TEM demonstrated that Zr-promoted catalysts owned a larger BET surface area and larger pore volume, more conducive to the distribution of active phases. Zr promoted the dispersity of iron particles and reduced the grain size of iron particles, resulting in improving the FTS activity. The CO-TPD and MES results revealed that the introduction of Zr promoted the dissociative adsorption of CO, thereby promoting the formation of the active phase χ-Fe 5 C 2 while suppressing the formation of ɛ'-Fe 2.2 C and further improving the FTS activity and the selectivity of C 2 = - C 4 = in the hydrocarbon distribution. However, the addition of the excessive amount of Zr caused the excess ZrO 2 to cover the surface of the active site, inhibiting the CO dissociative adsorption and the formation of χ-Fe 5 C 2 , resulting in decreasing the CO conversion and the selectivity of C 2 = - C 4 = . The XPS and H 2 -TPR results proved the interaction between Fe 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 . And the Fe- ZrO 2 interaction inhibited the coke deposition and aggregation of the Fe species, as confirmed by XRD and TEM, respectively. The FeMn5Zr2Na catalyst exhibited the highest C 2 = - C 4 = selectivity of 34.4% at a CO conversion of 96.3%. And FeMn5Zr2Na displayed the highest production of light olefins (441.6 g/(h·kg Cat )), which is significantly higher than FeMn2Na (162.2 g/(h·kg Cat )).

Abstract:Highly loaded cobalt catalysts (80% by weight) with different supports (SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2 and MgO) were prepared by the co-precipitation technique for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Microcalorimetric adsorptions of NH3, CO2, CO and H2 showed that the surface acidity/basicity significantly affected the surface properties of supported Co, as evidenced by the changes of strengths of adsorption of CO and H2 on Co, which in turn affected the FTS performance. The appropriate ratio (~1.2) of heats for the adsorption of CO and H2 on Co seemed important in determining the FTS activity.

Abstract:A series of catalysts were designed and synthesized via doping lanthanum into ZnCr oxide to realize efficient synthesis of isobutanol from syngas. By applying a combination of characterizations (XRD, TEM, EPR, XPS and in situ FT-IR) and DFT calculations, the effects of lanthanum promoter on catalyst structure and catalytic performance were investigated. With the doping of lanthanum, ZnCrLax composite oxides with a novel catalyst structure were constructed, in which Zn atom at tetrahedron site was partly substituted by doping La atom. The presence of this structure enhanced the formation of more oxygen vacancy sites and further benefitted the CO activation. In addition, formate intermediate was easier to generate and exhibited superior stability over ZnCrLax surface thus leaded to remarkably promoted catalytic activity. The ZnCrLa0.05 catalyst achieved optimum total alcohols selectivity of 61%, and the fraction of isobutanol reached as high as 24.6% under CO conversion of 23%.

Abstract:Highly loaded Co/SiO2 catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation technique with an n-butanol drying process for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). With the increase in cobalt loading from 20% to 80%, the FTS activity of the catalysts increased greatly. The addition of ZrO2 improved the dispersion of cobalt and promoted the adsorption of H2 and CO on cobalt. The preadsorbed H atoms significantly enhanced the adsorption of CO and C2H4, especially on cobalt promoted by ZrO2. While the adsorption of C2H4 onto clean cobalt led to the formation of ethylidyne, π- and di-σ-bonded C2H4 might form on the CO-preadsorbed 80%Co/SiO2 and 80%Co–8%ZrO2/SiO2, respectively. The presence of ZrO2 strengthened the bonding of molecularly adsorbed ethylene and increased its uptake on CO-preadsorbed cobalt, which might be why the 80%Co–8%ZrO2/SiO2 exhibited such high activity for the hydrogenation of CO to heavy hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The unsupported Mo–Co–K sulfide catalysts promoted by La were prepared through ultrasonic technology in non-aqueous medium and its performances for the synthesis of mixed alcohols from syngas were also investigated. The results showed that the catalysts promoted by La exhibited higher CO conversion and selectivity to ethanol than the unsupported Mo–Co–K sulfide catalyst without addition of La did under identical reaction conditions. Abstract:Alkali earth metals are effective promoters in cobalt-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. To compare the similarity and difference of the effect of the same main group of alkali earth metals on Fischer–Tropsch reaction, a series of alkali earth metals-modified alumina was prepared and applied as the supports for Co catalysts. Promotion of Co/Al2O3 catalyst by alkali earth metals achieved a low CH4 selectivity,high C5 + selectivity and C3 o/p due to the lower H*/CO* ratio and enhanced CO dissociation on the surface of catalyst than the unmodified one.

Abstract:Selective Fischer-Tropsch synthesis has been carried out over a series of Co/H-beta catalysts to investigate the influence of rare-earth metal ions promotion on the synthesis of gasoline-range hydrocarbons (GRHs, C-5-C-12 hydrocarbons). H-beta zeolite was doped with rare-earth metal ions, specifically Y3+, Ce3+ and La3+, by an ion-exchange method. The resulting catalysts were characterized by different methods, namely ICP-OES, BET, XRD, TEM, STEM-EDS, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD, CO-TPD and TG. It was found that the addition of Y3+ improved the dispersion of active components over the Co/H-beta catalyst, while doping with Ce3+, having the ability to change its valence state as well as the number of oxygen vacancies of the support, enhanced the catalyst reducibility. However, the addition of La3+ tended to cause agglomeration of the active particles due to its large ionic radius. Performance tests showed that the Co/Y-beta and Co/Ce-beta catalysts achieved higher CO conversions. Due to the moderate acidity and the enhanced CO-metal bonding, the Co/Y-beta catalyst exhibited optimal GRHs selectivity of 49% with a yield of 41.4% at 260 degrees C, 2 MPa, H-2/CO = 2, and 1064 h(-1). More light hydrocarbons were produced after ion-exchange with La3+ because new strongly acidic sites were formed in the zeolite, leading to low GRHs production.

The presence of ZrO2 increased the BET surface area of the catalysts and the amount of reducible CuO.
