Abstract:With the development of industrialization and urbanization, the demand of metal mining increases rapidly, resulting in groundwater, soil and air pollution (Ghani et al., 2022;Lv et al., 2022;Tian et al., 2022). Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of metals (such as lead, zinc, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, etc.) seriously harms human health ecological environment and biodiversity (Qi et al., 2022;Zhang and Zhang, 2022). Hence, it is important and urgent to understand the impact of metals on the environment. Furthermore, the hazards and biogeochemical transformation of metals are different due to various environmental factors (Ding et al., 2022;Ghani et al., 2022). To sum up, this special issue mainly focuses on metals in contaminated environments, which reflects the desire to comprehensively understand the migration characteristics and environmental impact of metals through interdisciplinary research.We hope that the contents of this special issue can encourage relevant workers to obtain more new breakthroughs in this field and promote interdisciplinary cooperation.

Abstract:Abstract“Heavy metals” are the chemical elements which, in their standard state, have a specific gravity of more than about 5 g cm−3 i.e. their densities are five times greater than water. These constitute a very heterogeneous group of elements greatly varied in their chemical properties and biological functions. Heavy metals are kept under environmental pollutant category due to their toxic effects in plants, human and food particularly in areas with high anthropogenic pressure. Heavy metal pollution is one of the most important environmental problems today. Various industries produce and discharge wastes containing different heavy metals into the environment, such as mining and smelting of metalliferous, surface finishing industry, energy and fuel production, fertilizer and pesticide industry and application, metallurgy, iron and steel, electroplating, electrolysis, electro-osmosis, leatherworking, photography, electric appliance manufacturing, metal surface treating, aerospace and atomic energy installation etc. They are widely used in all fields of life i.e. batteries, dyes, alloys, chemical compounds, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products thus suggesting that the risk of pollution is very high. Thus, metal as a kind of resource is becoming shortage and also brings about serious environmental pollution, threatening human health and ecosystem. Three kinds of heavy metals are of concern, including toxic metals (such as Hg, Cr, Pb, Cd, As, etc.), precious metals (such as Pd, Pt, Ag, Au, Ru etc.) and radionuclides (such as U, Th, Ra, Am, etc.). The presence of heavy metal in atmosphere, soil and water, even in traces represent a severe risk to all organisms for their long term toxicological effects. Heavy metal bioaccumulation and biomagnifications in the food chain can be extremely dangerous to human health.

Abstract:<p>Environmental pollution of heavy metals is increasingly becoming a problem and has become of great concern due to the adverse effects it is causing around the world. These inorganic pollutants are being discarded in our waters, soils and into the atmosphere due to the rapidly growing agriculture and metal industries, improper waste disposal, fertilizers and pesticides. This review shows how pollutants enter the environment together with their fate. Some metals affect biological functions and growth, while other metals accumulate in one or more different organs causing many serious diseases such as cancer. The pharmacokinetics and toxicological processes in humans for each metal is described. In summary, the review shows the physiological and biochemical effects of each heavy metal bioaccumulation in humans and the level of gravity and disquieting factor of the disease.</p>

Abstract:Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) have caused serious environmental pollution and health risks. Although the past few years have witnessed the achievements of studies on environmental behavior of HMs, the related toxicity mechanisms, and pollution control, their relationship remains a mystery. Researchers generally focused on one topic independently without comprehensive considerations due to the knowledge gap between environmental science and human health. Indeed, the full life cycle control of HMs is crucial and should be reconsidered with the combination of the occurrence, transport, and fate of HMs in the environment. Therefore, we started by reviewing the environmental behaviors of HMs which are affected by a variety of natural factors as well as their physicochemical properties. Furthermore, the related toxicity mechanisms were discussed according to exposure route, toxicity mechanism, and adverse consequences. In addition, the current state-of-the-art of available technologies for pollution control of HMs wastewater and solid wastes were summarized. Finally, based on the research trend, we proposed that advanced in-operando characterizations will help us better understand the fundamental reaction mechanisms, and big data analysis approaches will aid in establishing the prediction model for risk management.

Abstract:Excessive levels of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in natural environments pose a serious threat to living beings worldwide. HM exposure causes irreversible damage to structural components and metabolic processes in living organisms, as has been observed in multiple studies on various organisms. In the natural environment, biological individuals interact with others through the food web rather than exist independently, which facilitates the transfer of HMs in the food web. However, the difference in HM toxicity among different biological species has not been elucidated. This review provides information on the speciation and migration of HMs in different environments to clarify the HM exposure routes of different biological species. The differences in the biotoxicity of HMs to different species, from microbes to humans, are emphasized. The relationship between HM toxicity and biological species is confirmed by the fact that HMs can be transferred and bioaccumulated along the food chain. Effective strategies for decreasing HMs emissions and removing HMs from the environment are briefly discussed. Finally, the limitations of the present study and future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in China and a large number of people are threatened by heavy metal pollution. Extensive damage to human organs, such as liver, kidney, digestion system, and nervous system can be caused by uptake of excess heavy metals. Heavy metals in the environment can originate from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Although contamination of heavy metals has been known to be a severe environmental problem for decades, it is still getting worse in recent years and there are few feasible approaches to resolve this problem. Due to their high toxicity, prevalent existence and persistence in the environment, lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As) are commonly considered as the priority heavy metals which should be concerned and their emission should be controlled in China. This paper reviewed the pollution of heavy metals in China, focusing on the following four aspects: current status of heavy metal pollution in China, sources of heavy metals in China, toxicity and potential risk, and possible reduction strategies.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in water and soil presents a growing global issue that poses significant risks to environmental integrity and human well-being. Various heavy metals, including arsenic (As), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), contaminate ecosystems. These metals enter the environment through both natural processes and human activities such as coal mining, leather production, metal processing, agriculture, and industrial waste disposal. With their high toxicity and tendency to accumulate in organisms, heavy metals induce oxidative stress in cells, resulting in organelle damage. This toxicity can lead to genetic mutations and histone alterations. Given the severe effects of heavy metals, urgent actions are required to eliminate them from polluted soil and water. While physicochemical techniques like membrane filtration, precipitation, oxidation, and reduction exist, they have limitations. Hence, there is a pressing need to devise environmentally friendly and cost-efficient approaches for heavy metal removal. This article examines heavy metal contamination in water and soil, its adverse impacts, and the cleanup of heavy metals using eco-friendly methods.

Abstract:Heavy metals are an important class of pollutants with both lethal and sublethal effects on organisms. The latter are receiving increased attention, as these may have harmful ecological outcomes. For example, recent explorations of heavy metals in freshwater habitats reveal that they can modify chemical communication between individuals, resulting in “info-disruption” that can impact ecological relationships within and between species. Info-disruption can affect animal behavior and social structure, which in turn can modify both intraspecies and interspecies interactions. In terrestrial habitats, info-disruption by metals is not well studied, but recent demonstrations of chemical signaling between plants via both roots and volatile organic molecules provide potential opportunities for info-disruption. Metals in terrestrial habitats also can form elemental plant defenses, in which they can defend a plant against natural enemies. For example, hyperaccumulation of metals by terrestrial plants has been shown to provide defensive benefits, although in almost all known cases the metals are not anthropogenic pollutants but are naturally present in soils inhabited by these plants. Info-disruption among microbes is another arena in which metal pollutants may have ecological effects, as recent discoveries regarding quorum sensing in bacteria provide an avenue for metals to affect interactions among bacteria or between bacteria and other organisms. Metal pollutants also may influence immune responses of organisms, and thus affect pathogen/host relationships. Immunomodulation (modification of immune system function) has been tied to some metal pollutants, although specific metals may boost or reduce immune system function depending on dose. Finally, the study of metal pollutants is complicated by their frequent occurrence as mixtures, either with other metals or with organic pollutants. Most studies of metal pollutants focus on single metals and therefore oversimplify complex field conditions. Study of pollutant impacts on chemical ecology also are difficult due to the necessity of studying effects at varying ecological scales: “dynamic scaling” of chemical ecology studies is rarely done completely. It is clear that much remains to be learned about how heavy metal pollution impacts organisms, and that exciting new research frontiers are available for experimental exploration.

Abstract:Samples of water,soil,plants were collected from one gold-copper miner area.It was shown that the soil and water were heavy metal contaminated.Pollution is more serious in water than in soil.The water was serious pollution.The Pollution Index is 12.084～83.848.The contamination degree of As,Cu,Zn,Cr was 45.06,30.95,7.16,3.88 times as much as the national standard III of water quality,respectively.The soils were pollution,too,and contaminated mainly by Cu and As.The contamination degree of Cu and As was 11.206,2.774 times as much as the national standard 3 of soil quality,respectively.The plants were contaminated mainly by Cu and As.The contamination degree of metals was 5.21 and 3.90 times as much as the average concentrations.

Abstract:Metals and especially heavy metals are one of the major constituents of environmental pollution. The sources of heavy metal pollution can be geogenic or anthropogenic. The man-made sources include fumes, metal laden dust or food components. Although, many metals are essential for animal metabolism but a dose exceeding the required concentration is often deleterious. The hazardous nature of these heavy metals has been extensively studied in human, animal and plants showing various toxicological impacts of toxic metals. The acute or chronic exposure of heavy metals to animals and human can result in severe injury to the structure and function of vital organs as liver, kidney, brain along with systemic disease conditions. The growth of plants is also severely affected by the intake of metallic compounds through the mineral and water absorption route. The deleterious effects on plants range from symptoms of injury to metabolic, enzymatic, and growth inhibition. The study of heavy metal pollution and the subsequent impact to flora and fauna can contribute in spreading public awareness and sensitizing policy makers to develop strategic planning in order to reduce the pollution and implement biological protection strategies.

Abstract:Toxic metal(loid)s, e.g., mercury, arsenic, lead, and cadmium are known for several environmental disturbances creating toxicity to humans if accumulated in high quantities. Although not discussed critically, the organo-forms of these inorganic metal(loid)s are considered a greater risk to humans than their elemental forms possibly due to physico-chemical modulation triggering redox alterations or by the involvement of biological metabolism. This extensive review describes the chemical and physical causes of organometals and organometal(loid)s distribution in the environment with ecotoxicity assessment and potential remediation strategies. Organo forms of various metal(loid)s, such as mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), tin (Sn), antimony (Sb), selenium (Se), and cadmium (Cd) have been discussed in the context of their ecotoxicity. In addition, we elaborated on the transformation, speciation and transformation pathways of these toxic metal(loid)s in soil-water-plant-microbial systems. The present review has pointed out the status of toxic organometal(loid)s, which is required to make the scientific community aware of this pressing condition of organometal(loid)s distribution in the environment. The gradual disposal and piling of organometal(loid)s in the environment demand a thorough revision of the past-present status with possible remediation strategies prescribed as reflected in this review.
Comprehensive assessment of environmental and health risks of metal(loid)s pollution from non-ferrous metal mining and smelting activities

Abstract:Abandoned non-ferrous metal mining and smelting sites have left a degraded environmental legacy, threatening the ecosystem and human health, particularly by the presence of As, Cd, Pb, and Cu as major contaminants. The health of the metal-contaminated soils was assessed by combining physicochemical parameters and microbial metabolism activity analyses. Low microbial metabolic activity indicated that soil microorganisms were inhibited by the presence of heavy metals. The content and speciation distribution of metals were closely linked to the measured microbial metabolic indicators. The invertase (INV) activity and peak time (Tpeak) were identified as sensitive bio-indicators for assessing soil health conditions. Combination environmental assessment (CEA) pollution, considering the total content and chemical form of metal(loid)s, revealed Cd, As, Pb, and Cu all reached high pollution degrees at the surrounding area, while Cr, Mn, Sb, Zn, Ni, and V were low pollution degrees. Different research sites ranked by potential ecological risk index (RI) as follows Pollution site (24621.22) > East site (19330.32) > West site (12989.49) > South site (9281.05), while different sites were sorted in reverse order by microbial indicators. The analyses revealed that the main human health risk was linked to As, threatening the local population with non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic hazards, particularly for children.

Abstract:Everyone knows heavy metals are inorganic pollutants with strong toxicity and typical pollutant needing preferentially control. In the metal mines of China, the tails that were piled up on the ground already have reached more than 4 billion tons, and this number increased 2 ×108 tons every year. The characteristics of metal mine tails mainly include: (1) the grain size is extremely fine; (2) The quantity in weight was very large; (3) the toxicity is very strong; (4) Transporting concentration is very low. The migration of heavy metals would impact the local environment, the safety of the downriver resident and the plowland, the food safety of livestock as well as the solid’s safety. Based on the characteristics of mine tailings impacting to environment, this paper estimates the pollution property, as well as studies the harm for the outside environment through the experiment of the gross analysis and the infusion toxicity analysis. This research takes Longdu tailings of Dahong Mountain for example to know the harm of heavy metal ion.

Abstract:The potential for toxicants to harm organisms in the environment is influenced by the physicochemistry of the substances and their environmental behaviors and transformation within ecosystems. This special issue is composed of 20 papers that report on studies which have investigated the fate and toxicity of various toxicants including engineered nanoparticles, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, antibiotics, pathogens, heavy metals, and agricultural nutrients. The environmental transformations of these substances and how these processes affect their toxicity are emphasized. This paper highlights the important findings and perspectives of the selected papers in this special edition, with an aim of providing insights into full-scale evaluation on the toxicity of various contaminants that exist in ecosystems. General suggestions are provided for the future directions of toxicological research.
Toxic Metal Pollution and Ecological Risk Assessment in Sediments of Water Reservoirs in Southeast China

Abstract:The concentration, distribution and pollution status caused by toxic metals, i.e. (Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, Cd and Zn) were measured in sediments from two water reservoir (Tong reservoir and Yang reservoir) in southeast coastal area in China by using enrichment factor (EF), potential ecological risk index , total potential ecological risk (PER) and principal component analysis. Results showed that most of the sediment samples collected from both water reservoirs were moderately to heavily polluted by Cu, Cr, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn. In Tong reservoir mean concentrations of the various toxic metals, i.e. (Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn) were 0.26, 1.64, 81.04, 46.68, 208.81, 88.43 and 165.27 mg kg(-1), respectively while in Yang reservoir mean concentrations of the various toxic metals, i.e. (Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn) were 0.28, 0.51, 21.38, 24.44, 322.37, 47.72 and 70.84 mg kg(-1), respectively. Results of EF showed that in Tong reservoir Cu, Hg and Pb ranged from moderately enrichment to moderately severe enrichment while Cr and Zn were in the range of moderately enrichment. Similarly, cadmium (Cd) was found in the range of severe enrichment. While in Yang reservoir; Cu, Cr, Pb and Zn has no enrichment but Cd and Hg were characterised as moderately enriched. Moreover, PER in Tong reservoir was ranged, 142.71-415.07 with an average of 234.67 in all the core sediments, which showed that PER of Tong reservoir is in the range of considerable risk. While total PER of Yang reservoir was in the range of moderate risk to considerable risk. Among both water reservoirs, sediments samples collected from the Tong reservoir were more contaminated than Yang reservoir. The extent of pollution caused by toxic metals in both water reservoirs indicates that condition is much alarming for biota and for residents in surrounding area of both reservoirs. Sediments samples of both reservoirs were extensively polluted by mainly two toxic metals, i.e. (Cd and Hg) while moderately less polluted by other toxic metals. Accumulation of Cd and Hg in both reservoirs was predominantly influenced by agricultural practices, human activities, residential run-off and soil erosion.

Abstract:Residual concentrations of some trace elements and lightweight metals, including cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, silver, zinc, nickel, chromium, arsenic, gallium, indium, gold, cobalt, polonium, and thallium, are widely detected in aquatic ecosystems globally. Although their origin may be natural, human activities significantly elevate their environmental concentrations. Metals, renowned pollutants, threaten various organisms, particularly crustaceans. Due to their feeding habits and habitat, crustaceans are highly exposed to contaminants and are considered a crucial link in xenobiotic transfer through the food chain. Moreover, crustaceans absorb metals via their gills, crucial pathways for metal uptake in water. This review summarises the adverse effects of well-studied metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Hg, Zn, Ni, Cr, As, Co) and synthesizes knowledge on the toxicity of less-studied metals (Ag, Ga, In, Au, Pl, Tl), their presence in waters, and impact on crustaceans. Bibliometric analysis underscores the significance of this topic. In general, the toxic effects of the examined metals can decrease survival rates by inducing oxidative stress, disrupting biochemical balance, causing histological damage, interfering with endocrine gland function, and inducing cytotoxicity. Metal exposure can also result in genotoxicity, reduced reproduction, and mortality. Despite current toxicity knowledge, there remains a research gap in this field, particularly concerning the toxicity of rare earth metals, presenting a potential future challenge.
