Abstract:The northeastern forest region of China is an important component of total temperate and boreal forests in the northern hemisphere. But how carbon (C) pool size and distribution varies among tree, understory, forest floor and soil components, and across stand ages remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we selected three major temperate and two major boreal forest types in northeastern (NE) China. Within both forest zones, we focused on four stand age classes (young, mid-aged, mature and over-mature). Results showed that total C storage was greater in temperate than in boreal forests, and greater in older than in younger stands. Tree biomass C was the main C component, and its contribution to the total forest C storage increased with increasing stand age. It ranged from 27.7% in young to 62.8% in over-mature stands in boreal forests and from 26.5% in young to 72.8% in over-mature stands in temperate forests. Results from both forest zones thus confirm the large biomass C storage capacity of old-growth forests. Tree biomass C was influenced by forest zone, stand age, and forest type. Soil C contribution to total forest C storage ranged from 62.5% in young to 30.1% in over-mature stands in boreal and from 70.1% in young to 26.0% in over-mature in temperate forests. Thus soil C storage is a major C pool in forests of NE China. On the other hand, understory and forest floor C jointly contained less than 13% and <5%, in boreal and temperate forests respectively, and thus play a minor role in total forest C storage in NE China.

Abstract:Forests play an important role in regional and glob-al carbon ( C ) cycles.Quantitative estimation of com-ponents of forest C budget and their spatial and temporal distributions is both of scientific and of political impor-tance.Here we provide a brief review of update findings of forest C budgets and mechanisms at spatial scales of national, regional and global.In general, China's for-ests have biomass C sink of 1896 Tg during 1977—2008, with an annual C sink of 70.2TgC/yr.All sec-tors ( biomass, plant residue, litter and soil) of forest C pool shows significant C sink, with a total sequestration rate of 186.7TgC/yr, in recent ten years.The biomass C stocks of the forests in East Asian increased as a whole over 1970s—2000s.China and Japan were two major contributors to the total region's forest C sink while the reduction in forest land in both North Korea and Mongolia caused a C loss.In China, the areal ex-pansion of planted forest land was a larger contributor to C sinks than increased biomass density.On the contra-ry, forests in Japan and South Korea acted as a C sink because of increased forest growth rather than area in-crement.Globally, a total forest sink of 4.0PgC was es-timated based on forest inventory data and long-term e-cosystem carbon studies for 1990 to 2007 .The total car-bon sequestration by world forests offset half of its con-temporary fossil-fuel CO2 emissions.
Forest biomass carbon stocks in China over the past 2 decades: Estimation based on integrated inventory and satellite data

Abstract:Forests are major contributor of terrestrial ecosystem carbon (C) pools, and are thus crucial components for assessing the global C budget. On the basis of forest inventory data for three inventory periods of 1984-1988, 1989-1993, and 1994-1998, and synchronous NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data, we developed a satellite-based approach for estimating China's forest total biomass C stocks. Using this approach, we analyzed the changes in forest C stocks over the last 2 decades to identify the size and distribution of C sinks/sources in the forests. The total forest biomass of China averaged 5.79 Pg C (1 Pg = 10(15) g) during the study period, with an average biomass density of 45.31 Mg C/ha (1 Mg = 10(6) g). The forest biomass C density showed a large spatial heterogeneity: high in southwestern and northeastern areas, and low in the eastern coastal regions. Over the past 2 decades, the total forest biomass C stock increased from 5.62 Pg C in the early 1980s (average for 1981-1983) to 5.99 Pg C by the end of the 1990s (average for 1997-1999), giving a total increase of 0.37 Pg C and an annual sequestration rate of 0.019 Pg C/yr. The C sink appeared mainly in regions with lower C density. Both environmental changes and human activities are likely major drivers of such spatiotemporal patterns.

Abstract:China's terrestrial ecosystems have functioned as important carbon sinks. However, previous estimates of carbon budgets have included large uncertainties owing to the limitations of sample size, multiple data sources, and inconsistent methodologies. In this study, we conducted an intensive field campaign involving 14,371 field plots to investigate all sectors of carbon stocks in China's forests, shrublands, grasslands, and croplands to better estimate the regional and national carbon pools and to explore the biogeographical patterns and potential drivers of these pools. The total carbon pool in these four ecosystems was 79.24 ± 2.42 Pg C, of which 82.9% was stored in soil (to a depth of 1 m), 16.5% in biomass, and 0.60% in litter. Forests, shrublands, grasslands, and croplands contained 30.83 ± 1.57 Pg C, 6.69 ± 0.32 Pg C, 25.40 ± 1.49 Pg C, and 16.32 ± 0.41 Pg C, respectively. When all terrestrial ecosystems are taken into account, the country's total carbon pool is 89.27 ± 1.05 Pg C. The carbon density of the forests, shrublands, and grasslands exhibited a strong correlation with climate: it decreased with increasing temperature but increased with increasing precipitation. Our analysis also suggests a significant sequestration potential of 1.9-3.4 Pg C in forest biomass in the next 10-20 years assuming no removals, mainly because of forest growth. Our results update the estimates of carbon pools in China's terrestrial ecosystems based on direct field measurements, and these estimates are essential to the validation and parameterization of carbon models in China and globally.

Abstract:China's carbon balanceThe publication of a comprehensive assessment of China's terrestrial carbon budget fills a major gap in the geographical spread of carbon balance data, and helps to further reduce uncertainties in the Northern Hemisphere carbon balance. Three different indicators were used to monitor China's carbon balance and its driving mechanisms during the 1980s and 1990s: biomass and soil carbon inventories extrapolated from satellite greenness measurements, ecosystem models and atmospheric inversions. The three methods produce similar estimates for the net carbon sink at 0.19 to 0.26 petagrams per year. Global terrestrial ecosystems, in comparison, have absorbed carbon at a rate of 1 to 4 Pg carbon per year during the 1980s and 1990s, which offsets 10–60% of fossil fuel emissions. Northeast China is a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere as a result over-harvesting and degradation of forests. In contrast, southern China accounts for over 65% of the carbon sink, attributable to regional climate change, tree planting and shrub recovery.

Abstract:Forest plays an important role in reducing pressure on the natural environment, weaking the influence of greenhouse effects, and sequestrating atmospheric carbon dioxide. So far, due to the lack of complete understanding of forest ecosystem processes and the limitations on the scope of application of evaluation methods, there are still great uncertainties in the researches on carbon fluxes of forest ecosystems in China at the national level. In this study, an individual tree species FORCCHN model, which could flexibly use the inventory data as the initial field (more accurately) or use the remote sensing information to inverse initial field was applied. The dynamics of key carbon cycle fluxes (net primary productivity (NPP) and net ecosystem productivity (NEP)) and carbon sequestration of forest ecosystems in China from 1982 to 2019 were simulated based on remote sensing data and FORCCHN model. The results showed that forest ecosystems in China had great carbon sequestration potential over the past 39 years. From 1982 to 2019, the NPP of Chinese forests presented a fluctuated increase. Total NPP from 2011 to 2019 ranged from 0.91 PgC·a-1 to 1.14 PgC·a-1. Annual average NEP of forest ecosystems in China from 2011 to 2019 was 0.199 PgC·a-1 (1Pg = 1015 g). Influenced by climate, soil and vegetation, carbon sequestration potential in Chinese forest ecosystems presented obvious regional differences in space. The spatial distribution of NEP gradually increased from Northwest to Southeast China. From 2011 to 2019, forests in Yunnan Province had the strongest carbon storage capacity (72.79 TgC·a-1, 1Tg = 1012 g), followed by forests in Guangxi (18.49 TgC·a-1) and forests in Guangdong (10.01 TgC·a-1). Our results not only address concerns about carbon sequestration but also reflect the importance of Chinese forest resources in the development of the national economy and society.

Abstract:Significance Previous estimations of carbon budgets in China’s terrestrial ecosystems varied greatly because of the multiplicity of data sources and the inconsistency of methodologies. By conducting a methodologically consistent field campaign across the country, we estimated that the total carbon pool in China’s forests, shrublands, grasslands, and croplands was 79.24 ± 2.42 Pg C. The carbon density exhibited a strong dependence on climate regime: it decreased with temperature but increased with precipitation. The country’s forests have a large potential of biomass carbon sequestration of 1.9–3.4 Pg C in the next 10 to 20 years assuming no removals. Our findings provide a benchmark to identify the effectiveness of the government’s natural protection policies.

The Relative Contributions of Forest Growth and Areal Expansion to Forest Biomass Carbon

Abstract:Forests play a leading role in regional and global terrestrial carbon (C) cycles. Changes in C sequestration within forests can be attributed to areal expansion (increase in forest area) and forest growth (increase in biomass density). Detailed assessment of the relative contributions of areal expansion and forest growth to C sinks is crucial to reveal the mechanisms that control forest C sinks and it is helpful for developing sustainable forest management policies in the face of climate change. Using the Forest Identity concept and forest inventory data, this study quantified the spatial and temporal changes in the relative contributions of forest areal expansion and increased biomass growth to China's forest biomass C sinks from 1977 to 2008. Over the last 30 years, the areal expansion of forests has been a larger contributor to C sinks than forest growth for planted forests in China (62.2% vs. 37.8 %). However, for natural forests, forest growth has made a larger contribution than areal expansion (60.4% vs. 39.6 %). For all forests (planted and natural forests), growth in area and density has contributed equally to the total C sinks of forest biomass in China (50.4% vs. 49.6 %). The relative contribution of forest growth of planted forests showed an increasing trend from an initial 25.3% to 61.0% in the later period of 1998 to 2003, but for natural forests, the relative contributions were variable without clear trends, owing to the drastic changes in forest area and biomass density over the last 30 years. Our findings suggest that afforestation will continue to increase the C sink of China's forests in the future, subject to sustainable forest growth after the establishment of plantations.
Carbon carry capacity and carbon sequestration potential in China based on an integrated analysis of mature forest biomass

Abstract:Forests play an important role in acting as a carbon sink of terrestrial ecosystem. Although global forests have huge carbon carrying capacity (CCC) and carbon sequestration potential (CSP), there were few quantification reports on Chinese forests. We collected and compiled a forest biomass dataset of China, a total of 5841 sites, based on forest inventory and literature search results. From the dataset we extracted 338 sites with forests aged over 80 years, a threshold for defining mature forest, to establish the mature forest biomass dataset. After analyzing the spatial pattern of the carbon density of Chinese mature forests and its controlling factors, we used carbon density of mature forests as the reference level, and conservatively estimated the CCC of the forests in China by interpolation methods of Regression Kriging, Inverse Distance Weighted and Partial Thin Plate Smoothing Spline. Combining with the sixth National Forest Resources Inventory, we also estimated the forest CSP. The results revealed positive relationships between carbon density of mature forests and temperature, precipitation and stand age, and the horizontal and elevational patterns of carbon density of mature forests can be well predicted by temperature and precipitation. The total CCC and CSP of the existing forests are 19.87 and 13.86 Pg C, respectively. Subtropical forests would have more CCC and CSP than other biomes. Consequently, relying on forests to uptake carbon by decreasing disturbance on forests would be an alternative approach for mitigating greenhouse gas concentration effects besides afforestation and reforestation.
Carbon budget of different forests in China estimated by an individual-based model and remote sensing

Abstract:Forests play a key role in the regional or global carbon cycle. Determining the forest carbon budget is of great significance for estimating regional carbon budgets and formulating forest management policies to cope with climate change. However, the carbon budget of Chinese different forests and their relative contributions are not completely clear so far. We evaluated the carbon budget of different forests from 1981 to 2020 in China through combining model with remote sensing observation. In addition, we also determined the relative contribution of carbon budget of each forest type to all forests in China. Eight forest types were studied: evergreen coniferous forest (ECF), deciduous coniferous forest (DCF), coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (CBF), deciduous broad-leaved forest (DBF), evergreen broad-leaved forest (EBF), evergreen deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest (EDBF), seasonal rain forest (SRF), and rain forest (RF). The results indicated that the Chinese forests were mainly carbon sink from 1981 to 2020, particularly the annual average carbon budget of forest from 2011 to 2020 was 0.191 PgC·a -1 . Spatially, the forests’ carbon budget demonstrated obvious regional differences, gradually decreasing from Southeast China to Northwest China. The relative contributions of carbon budget in different forests to all forests in China were different. During 2011–2020, the ECF forests contributed the most carbon budget (34.45%), followed by DBF forests (25.89%), EBF forests (24.82%), EDBF forests (13.10%), RF forests (2.23%), SRF forests (3.14%) and CBF forests (1.14%). However, the DCF forests were found mainly as carbon source. These results contribute to our understanding of regional carbon budget of forests.

Abstract:Abstract Chinese forests cover most of the representative forest types in the Northern Hemisphere and function as a large carbon (C) sink in the global C cycle. The availability of long-term C dynamics observations is key to evaluating and understanding C sequestration of these forests. The Chinese Ecosystem Research Network has conducted normalized and systematic monitoring of the soil-biology-atmosphere-water cycle in Chinese forests since 2000. For the first time, a reference dataset of the decadal C cycle dynamics was produced for 10 typical Chinese forests after strict quality control, including biomass, leaf area index, litterfall, soil organic C, and the corresponding meteorological data. Based on these basic but time-discrete C-cycle elements, an assimilated dataset of key C cycle parameters and time-continuous C sequestration functions was generated via model-data fusion, including C allocation, turnover, and soil, vegetation, and ecosystem C storage. These reference data could be used as a benchmark for model development, evaluation and C cycle research under global climate change for typical forests in the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract:Forests play a leading role in regional and global carbon (C) cycles. Detailed assessment of the temporal and spatial changes in C sinks/sources of China’s forests is critical to the estimation of the national C budget and can help to constitute sustainable forest management policies for climate change. In this study, we explored the spatio-temporal changes in forest biomass C stocks in China between 1977 and 2008, using six periods of the national forest inventory data. According to the definition of the forest inventory, China’s forest was categorized into three groups: forest stand, economic forest, and bamboo forest. We estimated forest biomass C stocks for each inventory period by using continuous biomass expansion factor (BEF) method for forest stands, and the mean biomass density method for economic and bamboo forests. As a result, China’s forests have accumulated biomass C (i.e., biomass C sink) of 1896 Tg (1 Tg=1012 g) during the study period, with 1710, 108 and 78 Tg C in forest stands, and economic and bamboo forests, respectively. Annual forest biomass C sink was 70.2 Tg C a−1, offsetting 7.8% of the contemporary fossil CO2 emissions in the country. The results also showed that planted forests have functioned as a persistent C sink, sequestrating 818 Tg C and accounting for 47.8% of total C sink in forest stands, and that the old-, mid- and young-aged forests have sequestrated 930, 391 and 388 Tg C from 1977 to 2008. Our results suggest that China’s forests have a big potential as biomass C sink in the future because of its large area of planted forests with young-aged growth and low C density.

Abstract:Forests play an important role in global carbon cycles. However, the lack of available information on carbon stocks in dead organic matter, including woody debris and litter, reduces the reliability of assessing the carbon cycles in entire forest ecosystems. Here we estimate that the national DOM carbon stock in the period of 2004–2008 is 925 ± 54 Tg, with an average density of 5.95 ± 0.35 Mg C ha −1 . Over the past two decades from periods of 1984−1988 to 2004−2008, the national dead organic matter carbon stock has increased by 6.7 ± 2.2 Tg carbon per year, primarily due to increasing forest area. Temperature and precipitation increase the carbon density of woody debris, but decrease that of litter. Additionally, the woody debris increases significantly with above ground biomass and forest age. Our results can improve estimates of the carbon budget in China's forests and for better understanding of effects of climate and stand characteristics on dead organic matter distribution.

Abstract:Abstract. Forest soils represent a major stock of organic carbon (C) in the terrestrial biosphere, but the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) stock are poorly quantified, especially based on direct field measurements. In this study, we investigated the 20-year changes in the SOC stocks at eight sites from southern to northern China. The averaged SOC stocks increased from 125.2 ± 85.2 Mg C ha−1 in the 1990s to 133.6 ± 83.1 Mg C ha−1 in the 2010s across the forest sites, with a mean increase of 127–908 kg C ha−1 yr−1. This SOC accumulation was resulted primarily from both leaf litter and fallen logs and equivalent to 3.6–16.3 % of aboveground net primary production. Our findings provide strong evidence that China's forest soils have been acting as significant carbon sinks although their strength varies with forests in different climates.

Abstract:Forest soils represent a major stock of organic carbon (C) in the terrestrial biosphere, but the dynamics of soil organic C (SOC) stock are poorly quantified, largely due to lack of direct field measurements. In this study, we investigated the 20-year changes in SOC stocks in eight permanent forest plots, which represent boreal (1998–2014), temperate (1992–2012), subtropical (1987–2008), and tropical forest biomes (1992–2012) across China. SOC contents increased significantly from the 1990s to the 2010s, mostly in the upper 0–20 cm soil depth, and soil bulk densities do not change significantly during the same period. Forest expansion dominates China’s land carbon sink since 1980

Here we develop a new land-use and cover-change database for China, finding that differing historical survey methods biased China’s reported data causing large errors in Food and Agriculture Organization databases. Land ecosystem model simulations driven with the new data reveal a strong carbon sink of 8.9 ± 0.8 Pg carbon from 1980 to 2019 in China, which was not captured in Food and Agriculture Organization data-based estimations due to biased land-use and cover-change signals. The land-use and cover-change in China, characterized by a rapid forest expansion from 1980 to 2019, contributed to nearly 44% of the national terrestrial carbon sink. In contrast, climate changes (22.3%), increasing nitrogen deposition (12.9%), and rising carbon dioxide (8.1%) are less important contributors. This indicates that previous studies have greatly underestimated the impact of land-use and cover-change on the terrestrial carbon balance of China. This study underlines the importance of reliable land-use and cover-change databases in global carbon budget accounting.

Abstract:Background: China's terrestrial ecosystems play a pronounced role in the global carbon cycle. Here we combine spatially-explicit information on vegetation, soil, topography, climate and land use change with a process-based biogeochemistry model to quantify the responses of terrestrial carbon cycle in China during the 20th century. Results: At a century scale, China's terrestrial ecosystems have acted as a carbon sink averaging at 96 Tg C yr- 1, with large inter-annual and decadal variabilities. The regional sink has been enhanced due to the rising temperature and CO2 concentration, with a slight increase trend in carbon sink strength along with the enhanced net primary production in the century. The areas characterized by C source are simulated to extend in the west and north of the Hu Huanyong line, while the eastern and southern regions increase their area and intensity of C sink, particularly in the late 20th century. Forest ecosystems dominate the C sink in China and are responsible for about 64% of the total sink. On the century scale, the increase in carbon sinks in China's terrestrial ecosystems is mainly contributed by rising CO2. Afforestation and reforestation promote an increase in terrestrial carbon uptake in China from 1950s. Although climate change has generally contributed to the increase of carbon sinks in terrestrial ecosystems in China, the positive effect of climate change has been diminishing in the last decades of the 20th century. Conclusion: This study focuses on the impacts of climate, CO2 and land use change on the carbon cycle, and presents the potential trends of terrestrial ecosystem carbon balance in China at a century scale. While a slight increase in carbon sink strength benefits from the enhanced vegetation carbon uptake in China's terrestrial ecosystems during the 20th century, the increase trend may diminish or even change to a decrease trend under future climate change.

Abstract:The Paris Agreement mandates that signatory countries enhance the transparency of their national greenhouse gas inventories. China's inventories have reported substantial forest carbon gains using ground-based forest plot measurements, but independent satellite-based support for such inventories is lacking and the contributions from human management and anthropogenic environmental changes (atmospheric CO 2 growth, climate change and nitrogen deposition) are unknown. Here we use remote sensing and vegetation modelling to investigate the changes in woody biomass carbon and their drivers across China from 2001 to 2020. Our results show a forest cover increase of 6.2% (59.2 Mha) over this period and a woody biomass carbon sink of 208.6 ± 51.8 TgC yr −1 , consistent with the national inventories. The conservation of forest and woodland areas made an unexpectedly large contribution (59.2%) to the observed sink, with an additional 29.4% from anthropogenic expansion. Of these management-driven sinks, 53.7% (99.2 TgC yr −1 ) is attributed to a direct management effect and the remaining 46.3% to the effects of environmental changes. China's ecological restoration projects contributed 73.5% of the direct management effect. Our study provides satellite-based evidence to support China's inventories and underscores the crucial role of human management in the nation's woody carbon balance.

Abstract:Process mechanisms of carbon storage and carbon cycle in earth system are the scientific foundation for analyzing the cause of climate change, forecasting the climate change trend, and making mitigation and adaptation countermeasures, which have attracted great attention from the scientific community and international community. Since the late 1980s, Chinese scientists have carried out a great deal of research on the terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle, and have made great progress in many fields. In this paper, we review the history of the research on the terrestrial carbon cycle in China, summarize the results of the carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems and its spatial patterns, evaluate the uncertainties of the research, and put forward important scientific issues which are needed to be addressed urgently. Overall, the research on the carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems in China consists of four stages of development, i.e., the early carbon cycle research, the comprehensive study on the carbon cycle at regional scale, the experimental research on the adaptation of ecosystem carbon cycle to climate change, and the coupling cycles of C-N-H2O and the regional regulation and control. Most studies indicate that carbon storage of terrestrial ecosystems in China and its spatial pattern are controlled by temperature and precipitation. About 97.95–118.93 Pg carbon is stored in soil, forest and grassland in China. Since the mid 1970s, many management measures such as afforestation and forest management, grassland protection, farming system reformation and conservation tillage, have played important roles in carbon sequestration. However, large uncertainty exists among the evaluation results with various methods. In the future we should focus on the integrated monitoring system of the dynamics of carbon storage and carbon sink, foresight studies on the coupling cycles of ecosystem C-N-H2O and its regional regulation and control, quantitative assessment on the carbon budget and the potential of carbon sink of ecosystems in China, the evaluation of the economic benefit of various technologies for increasing carbon sink of typical ecosystems, and the measurable, reportable and verifiable scientific data and technical supports for establishing the policy framework of greenhouse gas management and carbon trading at national scale.

Abstract:Forests, the ancient wooden giants, are both symbols of natural beauty and reservoirs of carbon stocks. The current climate crisis has created an urgent need for an in-depth study of forest ecosystems and carbon stocks. Based on forest inventory data from field surveys and four bioclimatic zones [Zone 1 (Z1, humid forest), Zone 2 (Z2, semi-humid forest), Zone 3 (Z3, semi-humid to semi-arid forest-grassland), and Zone 4 (Z4, semi-arid typical grassland)], two methods [Method 1 (M1) and Method 2 (M2)] were used to estimate carbon stocks in forest ecosystems in Shaanxi Province, China, and explored the spatial patterns of carbon pools and potential influences. The total forest ecosystem carbon pool amounted to 520.80 Tg C, of which 53.60% was stored aboveground, 17.16% belowground, and 29.24% in soil (depth of 0-10 cm). Spatially, there were marked north-south gradients in both biomass (Z2 > Z3 > Z1 > Z4) and soil organic carbon densities (Z1 > Z2 > Z3 > Z4). The differences between aboveground and belowground biomass carbon density across broadleaf, needle-leaf, and broadleaf and needle-leaf mixed forest were not pronounced, while soil organic carbon density had the order of broadleaf (18.38 Mg C/ha) > needle-leaf (11.29 Mg C/ha) > broadleaf and needle-leaf mixed forest (10.33 Mg C/ha). Under an ideal scenario that excludes external factors, mainly forest growth, the sequestration potential of forest biomass by 2032 was estimated by M1 as 85.43 Tg, and by M2 to be substantially higher at 176.21 Tg. As of 2062, M1 estimated 155.97 Tg of sequestration potential for forest biomass. The spatial patterns of forest biomass and soil carbon density were closely related to climatic factors, and these relationships allowed the spatial division into two distinct climatic regions. Moreover, biomass carbon density was significantly correlated with the normalized difference vegetation index, soil silt, and elevation. This study provides key information for promoting the strategic shift from light-green to deep-green forest systems in Shannxi Province and updates the estimation methods of forest ecosystems' carbon pools based on field surveys.
