Abstract:Digital in-line holography is a versatile method to obtain lens-less images of small particles, such as aerosol particles, ranging from several to over one hundred microns in size. It has been shown theoretically, and verified by measurement, that a particle's extinction cross section can also be obtained from a digital hologram. The process involves a straightforward integration, but if noise is present it fails to give accurate results. Here we present a method to reduce the noise in measured holograms of single particles for the purpose of rendering the cross-section estimation more effective. The method involves masking the complex-valued particle image-amplitude obtained from a noisy hologram followed by a Fresnel transformation to generate a new noise-reduced hologram. Examples are given at two wavelengths, 440 nm and 1040 nm, where the cross section is obtained for a micro-sphere particle and several non-spherical particles approximately 50 microns in size.

Abstract:To apply digital holography to the measurement of three-dimensional dense particle fields in large facilities, we have developed a hybrid digital holographic particle-imaging system. The technique combines the advantages of off-axis (side) scattering in suppressing speckle noise and on-axis (in-line) recording in lowering the digital sensor resolution requirement. A camera lens is attached to the digital sensor to compensate for the weak object wave from side scattering over a large recording distance. A simple numerical reconstruction algorithm is developed for holograms recorded with a lens without requiring complex and impractical mathematical corrections. We analyze the effect of image sensor resolution and off-axis angle on system performance and quantify the particle positioning accuracy of the system. The holographic system is successfully applied to the study of inertial particle clustering in isotropic turbulence.

Abstract:In this contribution, we develop a model based on classical electrodynamics that describes light extinction in the presence of arbitrary aerosols. We do this by combining aerosol and light-intensity measurements performed with the well-proven measuring systems ELPI+ and MIREX, respectively. The developed model is particularly simple and depends on only a few input parameters, namely on densities and refractive indices of the constituting aerosol particles. As proof of principle, the model is in first applications used to determine extinction coefficients as well as mass-specific extinction for an infrared light source with a peak wave length of ${\lambda} = 0.88\ {\mu}m$. In doing so, detailed studies concentrate on two aerosols exemplary for characteristic values of the input parameters: a non-absorbing paraffin aerosol in a bench-scale setup and soot from a flaming n-heptane fire in a room-scale setup (test fire TF5 according to standard EN54). As main results, we find numerical values for mass-specific extinction that are first of all different in the two considered cases. Moreover, obtained results differ in part more than a factor of three from literature values typically used in practical applications. Based on the developed model, we explicitly address and assess underlying reasons for the deviations found. Finally, we propose a simple way how future light-extinction studies can be performed comparatively easily by means of the ELPI+-system or measuring devices that work in a similar way.

Abstract:This study presents theoretical investigation of the effects of particle and molecular extinction in horizontal remote sensing near the ground for several visibilities at UV wavelengths by neglecting the spatial inhomogeneity of aerosol in the atmosphere and taking into account the dependence of refracting on air temperature and pressure. Due to weak attenuation of oxygen and other gaseous atmospheric constituents in this region, we have only considered the effect of ozone in calculation. The results are important to estimate systematic errors in measuring gas concentration introduced by large wavelength separation in UV-DIAL. The total attenuation (km-1) at wavelengths is listed in the form of a table from 200 to 400 nm for several values of visibilities. It is found the aerosol attenuation in UV region varies quite smoothly with wavelength and therefore systematic error caused by aerosol scattering is negligible in remote sensing by UV-DIAL even with large wavelength separation. Moreover, it has been found that only aerosol extinction is dominant in lidar remote sensing in the lower atmosphere in UV region. In large altitude that aerosol concentration is lower; the molecular scattering is important especially for wavelengths larger than 310 nm.

Abstract:The extinction coefficient of atmospheric aerosol particles influences the earth's radiation balance directly or indirectly and it can be determined by the scattering and absorption characteristics of aerosol particles. The problem of estimating the change of extinction coefficient due to time evolution of particle size distribution is studied and an improved method for calculating the single particle extinction efficiency is proposed. Through this improved method, the single particle extinction efficiency can be expressed simply in powers of particle diameter based on the anomalous diffraction approximate for the particle size range from 0.1 to 10 mu m in diameter first, and then the change of the overall extinction coefficient undergoing (individually and simultaneous) Brownian and gravitational coagulation as well as condensation can be estimated comprehensively with the moment method based on the general dynamic equation. The feasibility and reliability of this method are investigated and the effect of time evolution of particle size distribution on the extinction coefficient is also estimated systemically. Simulation experiments indicate that the extinction coefficient obtained with the improved method coincides fairly well with that using the Mie theory, which provides a simple, dependable, and efficient method to estimate the change of extinction coefficient during the particle dynamic processes.

Abstract:Aerosol are many solid and liquid particles with the radii from 0.01 to 20 μm suspending in atmosphere. They will scatter and absorb the light which is one of reasons of light energy losing in atmosphere. It is necessary to study the aerosol extinction characteristics. Two instruments for measure of atmospheric aerosol extinction coefficients characteristics were introduced,one is forward scatter visibility sensor,and the other is three-wavelength integrating nephelometer. The contrast and analysis results of the two instruments were given and combined to increase the precision of detection. Then atmospheric visibility and aerosol extinction characteristics were obtained through the system measurement. The maximum value of the visibility was exceed 10 000 m and it was very high in summer and autumn in Hefei area. And the differences of visibility value in night were not obvious in the different seasons.The experimental results will be of great reference value to studying the atmospheric environmental assessment,aerosol radiation-climate effect and related optical experiment.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Interstellar reddening corrections are necessary to reconstruct the intrinsic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of accreting protostellar systems. The stellar SED determines the heating and chemical processes that can occur in circumstellar disks. Measurement of neutral hydrogen absorption against broad Lyα emission profiles in young stars can be used to obtain the total H i column density (N(H i)) along the line of sight. We measure N(H i) with new and archival ultraviolet observations from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of 31 classical T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars. The H i column densities range from log10(N(H i)) ≈19.6–21.1, with corresponding visual extinctions of AV =0.02–0.72 mag, assuming an RV of 3.1. We find that the majority of the H i absorption along the line of sight likely comes from interstellar rather than circumstellar material. Extinctions derived from new HST blue-optical spectral analyses, previous IR and optical measurements, and new X-ray column densities on average overestimate the interstellar extinction toward young stars compared to the N(H i) values by ∼0.6 mag. We discuss possible explanations for this discrepancy in the context of a protoplanetary disk geometry.

Abstract:Morphology measurement is essential for a better understanding of irregular particle dynamics. Digital holography of side scattering is applied to measure the morphology and 3D position of pulverized coal particles. The digital holographic recording of particle side scattering is modelled and the formula is verified by experiments. A side scattering holography system is established to record the hologram of pulverized coal particles. The hologram of particles with several scatterers has uneven chirp fringes which is mainly influenced by scatterer shape, while the hologram of particles with multiple scatterers is a superposition of single scatterer fringes with a speckle background which is influenced by both scatterer shape and location. The Moiré pattern which appears easily in digital holography of side scattering is also analyzed. The proposed technique is validated by in-line holography and is proven to have an advantage in the identification of irregular particle morphological and surface features simultaneously.

Abstract:We describe a robust, portable, deployable instrument for multiparametric optical characterization of single airborne particles. It is based on the Single Particle Extinction and Scattering method with additional sensors at 45° and 90° angles. Four independent optical parameters are associated to each particle. Basically, it provides a rigorous measurement of the extinction cross section and the complex amplitude of the forward scattered field. Moreover, thanks to the multiparametric single particle approach, it is possible to roughly classify the particles within a size range from a few hundreds of nanometers to some micrometers. By assigning a reasonable single scattering albedo for each population, our data are enough to fit the phase function with acceptable uncertainties. We report here the results of tests performed with water droplets, generating well controlled data without any free parameters. Data analysis is described in detail. We also report measurements performed on urban aerosol collected in the city of Milan by recovering the optical properties and feeding radiative transfer models. The findings reported here support the importance of an accurate measurement of the phase function, as already established by the Community.Copyright © 2020 American Association for Aerosol Research

Measurement of Mass Extinction Coefficient of Particles Based on the Infrared Quantitative Analysis

Abstract:The mass extinction coefficient of smoke particles is an intrinsic physical parameter to character shielding property. Infrared absorbency of aerosol particles is measured by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer in this article. On basis of quantitative analysis, a kind of method is proposed to rapidly and accurately measure the attenuation property of particles without smoke box in laboratory. Certain mass powder is dispersed in organic solvent, and then suspended solution is scanned by FTIR. According to spectrograms, the extinction coefficients of materials are calculated at infrared frequency. Obtained results are accorded with data measured by smoke box. Consequently, it is proved that above-mentioned experiment method is exactly and reliable. This testing technology can be used to quickly choose and identify shielding effects of new aerosol materials. To traditional test method, it is supplementary and auxiliary.

Abstract:Aerosol intensive optical properties, including Ångström exponents for aerosol light extinction (EAEs), scattering (SAEs) and absorption (AAEs) as well as and the single-scattering albedo (SSA), are indicators for aerosol size, chemical composition, radiative behaviour and particle sources. Derivation of these parameters requires the measurement of aerosol optical properties at multiple wavelengths, which usually involves the use of several instruments. Our study aims to quantify the uncertainties in the determination of these intensive properties using an optical closure approach. In our laboratory closure study, we measured the full set of optical properties for a range of light-absorbing particles with different properties externally mixed with ammonium sulfate to generate aerosols with controlled SSA values. The investigated absorbing particle types were fresh combustion soot emitted by an inverted flame soot generator (SOOT; fractal agglomerates), Aquadag (AQ; compact aggregates), Cabot black (BC; compact agglomerates) and an acrylic paint (magic black, shape unknown). The instruments used in this study were two cavity attenuated phase shift particle monitors for single-scattering albedo (CAPS PM SSA 's; λ =450 , 630 nm) for measuring light-extinction and light-scattering coefficients, one integrating nephelometer ( λ =450 , 550, 700 nm) for light-scattering coefficients, and one tricolour absorption photometer (TAP; λ =467 , 528, 652 nm) for filter-based light-absorption coefficients.

Aerosol model development for calculation of aerosol extinction in the coastal atmosphere surface layer

Abstract:Extinction of radiation in the marine boundary layer is dominated by scattering and absorption due to atmospheric aerosol. This is important to optical retrievals from satellite, remote sensing at environmental monitoring, backscatter of light to space (including climate forcing), cloud properties etc. In unpolluted regions the greatest effects on near shore scattering extinction will be a result of sea-salt from breaking waves and variations in relative humidity. The role of breaking waves appears to be modulated by wind, tide, swell, wave spectra and coastal conditions. These influences will be superimposed upon aerosol generated by open ocean sea-salt aerosol that varies with wind speed. The focus of our study is the extinction and optical effects due to aerosol in a specific coastal region. This involves linking coastal physical properties to oceanic and meteorological parameters in order to develop predictive algorithms that describe 3-D aerosol structure and variability. The aerosol microphysical model of the marine and coastal atmosphere surface layer is considered. The model is made on the basis of the long-term experimental data received at researches of aerosol sizes distribution function (dN/dr) in the band particles sizes in 0.01 100 μk. The model is developed by present time for the band of heights is 0 25 m. Bands of wind speed is 3 18 km/s, sizes fetch is up to 120 km, RH = 40 98 %. dN/dr of the model is characterized by the four modified lognormal functions with modal radiuses, equal r1 = 0,03; r2 = 0,24; r3 = 2; r4 = 10 μk (Piazzola, Kaloshin, 2005, 2006). The model distinctive feature is parameterization of amplitude and width of the modes as functions of fetch and wind speed. In the paper the dN/dr behavior depending at change meteorological parameters, heights above sea level, fetch (X), wind speed (U) and RH is show. The received results are compared to available microphysical models NAN and ANAM. On the basis of the developed model with usage of Mie theory for spheres the description of the last version of developed code MaexPro 5.0 (Marine Aerosol Extinction Profiles) for spectral profiles of aerosol extinction coefficients α(λ) calculations in the wavelength band, equal λ = 0.2 12 μm, with step ∆λ = 0.0001 μm is presented. In Fig. 1 the composite window “extinction spectra” of the code MaexPro 5.0 is submitted on which aerosol extinction spectra for chosen input meteorological parameters are resulted. Here with use of a service command “the switch OverPlot” aerosol extinction spectra α (λ) calculated on a basis dN/dr are resulted which can be received with the help of aerosol counter AZ-5 with a range of aerosol particles measurement on radius ∆r = 0.4 10 microns and dust counter ОМPN-10.0 (ОPТEК Spb), carrying out the control of fractions in standard РМ 10, РМ 2.5 and РМ 1. Fig. 1 shows that for three spectra of the aerosol sizes in wavelength band ∆ λ = 2 12 μm α (λ) differ approximately twice and in wavelength band ∆λ = 0.2 2 μm of distinction in values α (λ) reach 10 and more.

Lidar detection of small aerosol size distribution

Abstract:The major unknown in the global climate radiation balance calculations is the effect of aerosols. The extinction of aerosols depends upon the wavelength, size, concentration, composition, and to a lesser extent, shape of the aerosols. Thus, methods are needed to determine and model these quantities. The size distribution of larger aerosols can be monitored with multistatic lidar, at least in the spherical approximation. We can use this approximation in humid environments, and for old desert dusts in which the aspect ratio is typically below two. Aerosols that are small compared to the incident wavelength present a Rayleigh-like scattering dependence, and the size cannot be determined using multistatic lidar techniques. We discuss the analysis of true extinction from Raman lidar measurements at several wavelengths for determining the size distribution of aerosols. The Angstrom ratio, which is the natural log of the extinction ratio divided by the natural log of the wavelength ratio, has been used in column-integrated measurements to classify aerosols. Lidar backscatter Angstrom ratio measurements have also been used to classify aerosols as a function of range. However, the use for aerosol size distribution has not been investigated in detail before this work. We find, from Raman lidar measurements, Mie models of extinction and backscatter Angstrom ratios, that small aerosols make a significant contribution to optical scattering, and find that size information can be extracted from the lidar data.
Measuring Atmospheric Scattering from Digital Images of Urban Scenery using Temporal Polarization-Based Vision

Abstract:Particulate Matter (PM) is a form of air pollution that visually degrades urban scenery and is hazardous to human health and the environment. Current monitoring devices are limited in measuring average PM over large areas. Quantifying the visual effects of haze in digital images of urban scenery and correlating these effects to PM levels is a vital step in more practically monitoring our environment. Current image haze extraction algorithms remove haze from the scene for the sole purpose of enhancing vision. We present two algorithms which bridge the gap between image haze extraction and environmental monitoring. We provide a means of measuring atmospheric scattering from images of urban scenery by incorporating temporal knowledge. In doing so, we also present a method of recovering an accurate depthmap of the scene and recovering the scene without the visual effects of haze. We compare our algorithm to three known haze removal methods. The algorithms are composed of an optimization over a model of haze formation in images and an optimization using a constraint of constant depth over a sequence of images taken over time. These algorithms not only measure atmospheric scattering, but also recover a more accurate depthmap and dehazed image. The measurements of atmospheric scattering this research produces, can be directly correlated to PM levels and therefore pave the way to monitoring the health of the environment by visual means. Accurate atmospheric sensing from digital images is a challenging and under-researched problem. This work provides an important step towards a more practical and accurate visual means of measuring PM from digital images.

Aerosol light absorption and its measurement: A review

Abstract:Light absorption by aerosols contributes to solar radiative forcing through absorption of solar radiation and heating of the absorbing aerosol layer. Besides the direct radiative effect, the heating can evaporate clouds and change the atmospheric dynamics. Aerosol light absorption in the atmosphere is dominated by black carbon (BC) with additional, significant contributions from the still poorly understood brown carbon and from mineral dust. Sources of these absorbing aerosols include biomass burning and other combustion processes and dust entrainment.For particles much smaller than the wavelength of incident light, absorption is proportional to the particle volume and mass. Absorption can be calculated with Mie theory for spherical particles and with more complicated numerical methods for other particle shapes.The quantitative measurement of aerosol light absorption is still a challenge. Simple, commonly used filter measurements are prone to measurement artifacts due to particle concentration and modification of particle and filter morphology upon particle deposition, optical interaction of deposited particles and filter medium, and poor angular integration of light scattered by deposited particles. In situ methods measure particle absorption with the particles in their natural suspended state and therefore are not prone to effects related to particle deposition and concentration on filters. Photoacoustic and refractive index-based measurements rely on the heating of particles during light absorption, which, for power-modulated light sources, causes an acoustic signal and modulation of the refractive index in the air surrounding the particles that can be quantified with a microphone and an interferometer, respectively. These methods may suffer from some interference due to light-induced particle evaporation. Laser-induced incandescence also monitors particle heating upon absorption, but heats absorbing particles to much higher temperatures to quantify BC mass from the thermal radiation emitted by the heated particles. Extinction-minus-scattering techniques have limited sensitivity for measuring aerosol light absorption unless the very long absorption paths of cavity ring-down techniques are used. Systematic errors can be dominated by truncation errors in the scattering measurement for large particles or by subtraction errors for high single scattering albedo particles. Remote sensing techniques are essential for global monitoring of aerosol light absorption. While local column-integrated measurements of aerosol light absorption with sun and sky radiometers are routinely done, global satellite measurements are so far largely limited to determining a semi-quantitative UV absorption index.

Abstract:Holography is an ‘old’ technique for studying the behavior of clouds of droplets which finds a new interest with CCD cameras and real-time numerical reconstruction. Furthermore, the continued progress in camera characteristics (sensitivity, pixel number, digitalization level, and so on) opens the way to more accurate recording of the interference field. To gain a deep understanding of the technique, as well as an evaluation of the performance and limitations of digital holographic particle measurements under various conditions, standard holograms are required. In this paper, a general numerical standard of holograms of fields of particles based on rigorous near-field Lorenz–Mie scattering theory is presented. This theory makes possible the computation of holograms of fields of particles with an arbitrary number of particles of arbitrary size, arbitrary refractive index, arbitrary recording distance (near-field or far-field), and an arbitrary collecting angle (forward, off-axis, or backward scattering light). Several calculation examples are also given for the code validation and possible applications, including a new possible way to simultaneously measure the size, location, and refractive index of particles.

Abstract:A new method is proposed for certain wavelength aerosol optical characteristics(e.g extinction coefficient, scattering coefficient and absorption coefficient) by using the measurement data of a visibility meter. Firstly, 0.55 μm atmospheric extinction coefficient can be resolved by using visibility, when it subtracts the extinction coefficient of atmospheric molecule, 0.55 μm aerosol extinction coefficient can be obtained, and the number density of aerosol can be calculated by using Mie theory. Because the number density of aerosol is constant at the same time and atmospheric condition, so some other wavelength aerosol optical characteristics can be obtained by using Mie theory. This paper provided the aerosol optical characteristic of 0-2 km in 2003 in Hefei, at the wavelength of 1.06,1.536 and 3.75 μm, which is important for research on atmospheric environment and light transmission mode in atmosphere.
