Abstract:To apply digital holography to the measurement of three-dimensional dense particle fields in large facilities, we have developed a hybrid digital holographic particle-imaging system. The technique combines the advantages of off-axis (side) scattering in suppressing speckle noise and on-axis (in-line) recording in lowering the digital sensor resolution requirement. A camera lens is attached to the digital sensor to compensate for the weak object wave from side scattering over a large recording distance. A simple numerical reconstruction algorithm is developed for holograms recorded with a lens without requiring complex and impractical mathematical corrections. We analyze the effect of image sensor resolution and off-axis angle on system performance and quantify the particle positioning accuracy of the system. The holographic system is successfully applied to the study of inertial particle clustering in isotropic turbulence.

Abstract:Digital holography appears to be a strong contender as the next-generation technology for holographic diagnostics of particle fields and holographic particle image velocimetry for flow field measurement. With the digital holographic approach, holograms are directly recorded by a digital camera and reconstructed numerically. This not only eliminates wet chemical processing and mechanical scanning, but also enables the use of complex amplitude information inaccessible by optical reconstruction, thereby allowing flexible reconstruction algorithms to achieve optimization of specific information. However, owing to the inherently low pixel resolution of solid-state imaging sensors, digital holography gives poor depth resolution for images, a problem that severely impairs the usefulness of digital holography especially in densely populated particle fields. This paper describes a technique that significantly improves particle axial-location accuracy by exploring the reconstructed complex amplitude information, compared with other numerical reconstruction schemes that merely mimic traditional optical reconstruction. This novel method allows accurate extraction of particle locations from forward-scattering particle holograms even at high particle loadings.

Abstract:The holographic microscopy technique is a strong contender for dynamic three-dimensional (3D) measurement of small particles (typically smaller than 5 mu m) in microchannels. However, there is a big challenge to accurately measure the size of such small particles. The traditional hologram reconstruction method was numerically investigated. It is found that the error level, especially for the size measurement, is higher than expected, even in an ideal situation without consideration of noise. An alternative way based on Lorenz-Mie (LM) calculations was then presented. The intensity distribution of the fringe pattern on the particle hologram is directly used and compared with the ones calculated using an LM-based program. Various cases for particle sizes from 0.5 to 5 mu m and recording distances from 5 to 500 mu m are tested. The results show that the accuracy in particle sizing can be significantly improved. Digital In-line Holographic PIV for 3 D Particulate Flow Diagnostics

Abstract:We present a digital in-line holographic PIV system for diagnosing 3D particulate flows. This system records in-line holograms directly to a CCD camera and reconstructs them numerically. Since the pixel resolution of CCD cameras is much lower than that of holographic films, conventional particle extraction methods cannot yield high depth resolution that is important for velocity measurement and particulate flow diagnostics. To solve this problem, we have developed a novel particle extraction method based on the complex amplitude of reconstructed wave. With a simple in-line recording setup, this method can reach a depth resolution that is comparable with that of some off-axis holographic PIV systems. This method also alleviates the speckle noise problem intrinsic to in-line particle holography since speckles and particles can be clearly differentiated in complex wavefield. This technique is the basis for a digital in-line holographic PIV (HPIV) system with the addition of Concise Cross Correlation (CCC) and particle pairing algorithm (Pu and Meng 2000). Details of the system hardware and data processing method are described in this paper. The system was tested by both a simulated 3D flow around a collapsing spherical cavity and a laboratory particle suspension.
Measuring extinction with digital holography: noisy holograms

Abstract:Digital in-line holography is a versatile method to obtain lens-less images of small particles, such as aerosol particles, ranging from several to over one hundred microns in size. It has been shown theoretically, and verified by measurement, that a particle's extinction cross section can also be obtained from a digital hologram. The process involves a straightforward integration, but if noise is present it fails to give accurate results. Here we present a method to reduce the noise in measured holograms of single particles for the purpose of rendering the cross-section estimation more effective. The method involves masking the complex-valued particle image-amplitude obtained from a noisy hologram followed by a Fresnel transformation to generate a new noise-reduced hologram. Examples are given at two wavelengths, 440 nm and 1040 nm, where the cross section is obtained for a micro-sphere particle and several non-spherical particles approximately 50 microns in size.
An Approach For Sensing Underwater Particles Using Digital Holographic Imaging

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to use digital holographic imaging to capture the hologram of the underwater particles. Digital holography includes two steps: wavefront recording and wavefront reconstruction. In the experiments of the underwater particles, some technique issues, such as the principle of digital holography, zero-order item suppressing and reconstruction algorithm are discussed. The complex amplitude of the underwater particles is reconstructed using numerical methods based on the Kirchhoff-Fresnel integral formula. In this case, it enables reconstruction of the object wavefield in a plane at a distance d from hologram. This novel method for imaging the underwater particles using digital holography is an extremely valuable technique for the study of underwater particles fields as it has many advantages such as large depth of field, no focusing, high resolution and has the ability to record the wavefront information of all particles in the entire volume. Finally, this paper demonstrates it is possible for digital holographic imaging setup with less complexity to image underwater particles according to our laboratory results.

Abstract:We propose a compact, portable, and low-cost holographic microscope designed for the characterization of micrometric particles suspended in a liquid. This system is built around a commercial optical microscope by substituting its illumination source (a light-emitting diode) with a collimated laser beam. Similarly, a quartz flow cell replaces the microscope glass slide using a 3D-printed custom mount. With the hardware presented in this paper, the holographic imaging of the electromagnetic fields emitted by the particles that intercept the laser beam achieves a resolution close to that of optical microscopes but with a greater depth of field. Several morphological and optical features can be extracted from the holograms, including particle projected section, aspect ratio, and extinction cross-section. Additionally, we introduce a remote system control that enables users to process the acquired holograms on a remote computational device. This work provides a comprehensive description of the methodology of image processing in holographic microscopy and a series of validation measurements conducted using calibrated particles. This technique is suitable for the characterization of airborne particles found in snow, firn, and ice; here we report experimental results obtained from Alpine ice cores.

Abstract:Optical sensing is one of the key enablers of modern diagnostics. Especially label-free imaging modalities hold great promise as they eliminate labeling procedures prior to analysis. However, scattering signals of nanometric particles scale with their volume square. This unfavorable scaling makes it extremely difficult to quantitatively characterize intrinsically heterogeneous clinical samples, such as extracellular vesicles, as their signal variation easily exceeds the dynamic range of currently available cameras. Here, we introduce off-axis k-space holography that circumvents this limitation. By imaging the back-focal plane of our microscope, we project the scattering signal of all particles onto all camera pixels, thus dramatically boosting the achievable dynamic range to up to 110 dB. We validate our platform by detecting and quantitatively sizing metallic and dielectric particles over a 200 × 200 μm field of view and demonstrate that independently performed signal calibrations allow correctly sizing particles made from different materials. Abstract:Size and shape are primary properties of microscopic powder particles and need to be measured and controlled to guarantee the function of the powder or the final product constructed with it. They are also important for the design and optimization of the manufacturing processes utilizing the powder. In this study, we demonstrate a method to estimate the size and shape of complex microparticles using digital holographic tomography (DHT), which can be applied to small microparticles lacking the absorption contrast to be utilized by other techniques. DHT allows for fast acquisition of the projection images for varying illumination angles. From the projection images, a diffraction-corrected thickness map can be synthesized, which can then produce the 3D envelope of the imaged specimen. Applying this method to polystyrene microspheres and two types of pharmaceutical powders with a size in the range of 5–100 μm, we obtain various size and 3D shape parameters.

Abstract:The size and shape characterization of irregular particles is of great significance in the comprehensive understanding of many natural and industrial processes. The dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (DIPI) technique is adapted from a dual-beam backward illumination configuration of interferometric particle imaging to access the size and 2D shape of an irregular particle from its interferogram. An experimental setup combining the digital inline holography (DIH) and DIPI techniques characterizes the same projection of the same particle with a color camera, permitting the accuracy evaluation and validation between these two techniques. The comparison results show a good agreement between the 2D-Fourier transform of DIPI interferogram and the 2D-autocorrelation of DIH reconstructed in-focus image. The DIH gives the reference result for the size measurement of the particles, and we observe a maximum difference as low as 9% with the DIPI measurement. The backward arrangement of the dual-beam interferometric particle imaging technique facilitates its further instrumental development and application to a variety of real circumstances, e.g., solid fuel particles and ice crystals. Abstract:Recent developments have shown the potential of digital in‐line holography for diagnostics in fluids. This new method provides a low‐cost and an easy access method for measuring both size and spatial distribution of particles in a volume. Here, it is shown that, by applying traditional image processing tools on the particle images digitally reconstructed, statistical reliable results on particles size and spatial distribution can be obtained. The particle sizing method is experimentally illustrated by glass microspheres that are moving in a turbulent flow generated by a annular jet. A comparison with the histogram diameters provided by a common diffraction particle sizer are presented.

Abstract:We record simultaneously interferometric out-of-focus images and digital in-line holograms of liquid and frozen water droplets. We show that the analysis of speckle-like out-of-focus images allows a quantitative estimation of the size of the particles which is corroborated by numerical reconstruction of holograms recorded simultaneously. Interferometric out-of-focus imaging could be extended to the characterization of ice in clouds in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Digital holographic microscopy plays a key role in micro-fluid measurement,and appears to be a strong contender as the next-generation technology for diagnostics of three-dimensional (3D) particle field. However, various recording parameters, such as the recording distance, the particle size, the wavelength, the size of the CCD chip, the pixel size and the particle concentration, will affect the results of the reconstruction, and may even determine the success or failure of a measurement. In this paper, we numerically investigate the effects of particle concentration and the volume depth on reconstruction efficiency, to evaluate the capability of digital holographic microscopy. Standard particle holograms with all known recording parameters are numerically generated by using a common procedure based on Lorenz-Mie scattering theory. Reconstruction of those holograms are then performed by a wavelet-transform based method. Results show that on the premise that the value of volume depth is 24 μm, the reconstruction efficiency Ep decreases quickly until particle concentration reaches 6.89×105 mm?3, and decreases slowly with the increase of particle concentration from 6.89 × 105 mm?3 to 55.08 × 105 mm?3. And on the premise that the value of particle concentration is 13.77 × 105 mm?3, the reconstruction efficiency Ep decreases linearly with the increase of the volume depth. When shadow density is constant, the variance of the construction efficiency presents a certain regularity. When the volume depth is small, the effect of particle concentration on the reconstruction efficiency becomes larger than one of volume depth, while it comes to a completely opposite result with a larger volume depth.

Abstract:This paper presents the performance of electronic holography for imaging applications of biological and medical interest involving turbid media. It demonstrates that digital holography is useful for biological studies in the areas of estuary sediment erosion and imaging unstained living cells. In particular, we demonstrate the recording geometries of classical 'in-line' back illumination using a collimated beam for measuring micro-panicles eroded in a cylindrical observation chamber; we also demonstrate a phase contrast set-up using a magnifying lens for observing biomedical micro-objects of unstained living cells in physiological saline. Practical results are presented for the studies of sediment erosion and transport, which provide information about how polymeric substances produced by the organisms in sediment and erosion shear velocity affect the sediment particle size when erosive stresses are applied to sediment beds.

Besides, the volume depth also plays a key role in reconstruction.

Abstract:Digital holography shows great potential in flow field diagnostics due to its non-intrusive and instant three-dimensional and multi-parameter measurement. However, the low spatial resolution of the existing CCD, leading to small measurable area, is one of the limitations. Based on angular distribution of light scattering intensity, expansion of the measurement cross section of digital in-line holography was investigated at the condition of the existing CCD-resolution. Airy disk of forward light scattering of a particle limits the recording of interference pattern with high frequency, reducing the spatial resolution requirement of CCD. The measurement section of a flow field can be expanded by pre-amplification of CCD using imaging. The bigger the particle is, the larger the measurement section can be extended to. Effect of the CCD pixel size on particle measurement with different size was numerically studied, and coal particle flow was measured by digital in-line holography experimentally. Results show that the analysis is reasonable, and that the proposed method expanding the measurement cross-section is feasible. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:<p>Droplet generation through spray breakup is an unsteady and non-linear process which produces a relatively dense, highly polydisperse aerosol containing non-spherical droplets with sizes spanning several orders of magnitude. Such variability in size and shape can lead to significant sources of error for conventional measurements based on laser scattering. Although direct imaging of droplets can potentially overcome these limitations, imaging suffers from a shallow depth of field as well as occlusions, which prevents the complete spray from being analyzed. In comparison, digital inline holography (DIH), a low cost coherent imaging technique, can enable high resolution imaging of the sample over an extended depth of field, typically several orders of magnitude larger than traditional imaging. In this study, we showcase an automated DIH imaging system for characterizing monodisperse and polydisperse aerosol droplet size and shape distributions in the 20 μm – 3 mm diameter range, over a large sample volume. The high accuracy of the technique is demonstrated by measurements of monodisperse droplets generated by a vibrating orifice aerosol generator (VOAG), achieving a resolution of ∼14.2. Measurements of a polydisperse spray from a flat fan nozzle serve to establish the versatility of DIH in extracting a two-dimensional size-eccentricity distribution function, which indicates a strong semilogarithmic scaling between the two parameters that decays as the droplet migrates away from the nozzle. Due to its low cost and compact setup as well as high density of data obtained, DIH can serve as a promising approach for future aerosol characterization.</p>

Study on Extending the Depth of Field in Reconstructed Image for A Micro Digital Hologram

Abstract:Digital micro holography offers an in-situ, non-contact and three-dimensional way to explore the microscopic world. However, as it is difficult to focalize the whole object in one single reconstructed image, the application of digital micro holography to cases with a large longitudinal object volume is limited by the microscopes depth of field. By extending the depth of field in reconstructed micro holograms in the wavelet domain, this paper fully takes advantage of numerical reconstruction algorithms to solve this problem. First, a recorded hologram is rebuilt using the wavelet transform approach by setting up an appropriate longitudinal interval to obtain a series of reconstructed hologram planes. Then each plane is decomposed with wavelet into its sub-images of both high and low frequencies. Furthermore, the local variance of the maximum intensity gradients of the high- and low-frequency coefficients is calculated and utilized as the focus criterion. Finally, the image planes are fused into a single one with the depth of field extended to a large extent. The feasibility and robustness of this reconstruction procedure for both continuum and particle fields are investigated. One of the demonstrations is made in an experiment of a tilted continuum:carbon fiber. It is different from most of the previous applications where the interrogated is the particles and where the area involved is parallel to the CCD. The carbon fiber gets successfully reconstructed in three dimensions, and the measurement errors of its diameter are presented together with the reconstruction distances. Another is an experiment of a dispersed particle field:micro transparent particles are generated by an ultrasonic atomizer, for which the reconstruction procedure achieves an extended depth of field. In addition, a numerical model based on generalized Lorenz-Mie theory is used to simulate the holograms of both opaque and transparent particles of 1-15 m in diameter. Variations of the longitudinal location errors with the Fraunhofer number are analyzed, and comparisons are made between the results of opaque and transparent particles. Both the experimental and simulation outcomes show that this reconstruction procedure is a reliable one to acquire an extended-depth-of-field hologram for both the continuum and the dispersed particle fields, and then to accurately measure the objects.
Measuring formation of a vapor bubble around a heated nanoparticle and size of nanoparticles by holography

Abstract:Nanoscale particles and micron-sized bubbles are widely found in many industrial processes. The properties exhibited by nanomaterials in the fields of chemical, medical, material and environment sciences are closely related to particle size [1]. When the laser is focused on liquids dispersed with nanoparticles, the formation of laser-induced bubbles are related to the size of particle [2–5]. In this talk we will present the recovery of the size of nanoparticle by measuring the growth process of the laser-induced bubble when the nanoparticles are dispersed in liquids and irradiated by a strong pulsed laser. First, vapor bubbles are formed due to photothermal conversion between laser pulses and liquids containing absorptive nanoparticles, and the growth process of induced bubbles (including expansion and contraction) is recorded by high-speed holography. Then a bubble growth model is established based on heat transfer and bubble dynamics for predicting the size change of bubble generated by the laser irradiation of the nanoparticle. Finally, the size of nanoparticle is deduced and obtained from the experimentally measured bubble size and the numerical simulation results. The research result provides a method for measuring the size of nanoparticles and vapor bubble variation during liquid flow.
