It is known that there is no other convex domain which can form two-, three- or four-fold translative tiling in the Euclidean plane, but there are centrally symmetric convex octagons and decagons which can form five-fold translative tilings. Abstract:In 1885, Fedorov discovered that a convex domain can form a lattice tiling of the Euclidean plane if and only if it is a parallelogram or a centrally symmetric hexagon. his paper proves the following results. Except for parallelograms and centrally symmetric hexagons, there are no other convex domains that can form two-, three- or four-fold lattice tilings in the Euclidean plane. However, there are both octagons and decagons that can form five-fold lattice tilings. Whenever n >= 3, there are non-parallelohedral polytopes that can form five-fold lattice tilings in the n-dimensional Euclidean space.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new type of lattice shell composed of six-bar tetrahedral units whose projections are quadrilateral.The industrialized production and prefabricated construction can be easily carried out for this lattice shell due to its simple and regular form.Though the shell has relatively fewer members and joints and some members in the grids have been removed,the structure can still perform like a doublelayer lattice shell.The basic and reinforced structures are given.Four calculation models are established with different joint arrangement patterns and member properties.The joints can take various forms in the models,including rigid joint,semi-rigid-semi-hinged joint and hinged joint,which will result in divergent stiffness and stability performances of the structure.The static characteristics of the lattice shell under vertical load are analyzed,from which the distribution of the internal forces and the displacements of the basic and reinforced structures with four joint arrangement patterns can be gained.The results can provide some guides to the engineering design and selection of structural patterns.

Abstract:This paper proves the following statement: If a convex body can form a fivefold translative tiling in $\mathbb{E}^3$, it must be a parallelotope, a hexagonal prism, a rhombic dodecahedron, an elongated dodecahedron, a truncated octahedron, a cylinder over a particular octagon, or a cylinder over a particular decagon, where the octagon and the decagon are fivefold translative tiles in $\mathbb{E}^2$. Furthermore, it presents an example of multiple tiles in $\mathbb{E}^3$ with multiplicity at most 10 which is neither a parallelohedron nor a cylinder.

Abstract:This paper proves the following statement which answers questions of Gravin, Robins and Shiryaev: If a convex body can form a two, three or fourfold translative tiling in E3, it must be a lattice tile (parallelohedron). In other words, it must be a parallelotope, a hexagonal prism, a rhombic dodecahedron, an elongated dodecahedron, or a truncated octahedron. As a comparison, it is known that there exist non-parallelohedral fivefold translative tiles in every dimension.

In fact, even the bees know and use this fact! Is there any other convex domain which can tile the Euclidean plane? Yes, there is a long list of them! To find the list and to show the completeness of the list is a unique drama in mathematics, which has lasted for more than one century and the completeness of the list has been mistakenly announced not only once! Up to now, the list consists of triangles, quadrilaterals, three types of hexagons, and fifteen types of pentagons. In 2017, Michael Rao announced a computer proof for the completeness of the list. Meanwhile, Qi Yang and Chuanming Zong made a series of unexpected discoveries in multiple tilings in the Euclidean plane. For examples, besides parallelograms and centrally symmetric hexagons, there is no other convex domain which can form any two-, three- or four-fold translative tiling in the plane; there are only two types of octagons and one type of decagons which can form five-fold translative tilings.

For the generic cases (not necessarily convex) of the three types and two other special cases, we classify tilings of the plane under the assumption that all vertices have degree $3$. Then we use the classification to describe the corresponding hexagonal tilings of flat tori and their moduli spaces.

Abstract:The tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by congruent triangles have been extensively studied, and the edge-to-edge tilings have been completely classified. However, not much is known about the tilings by other congruent polygons. In this paper, we classify the simplest case, which is the edge-to-edge tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by 12 congruent pentagons. We find one major class allowing two independent continuous parameters and four classes of isolated examples. The classification is done by first separately classifying the combinatorial, edge length, and angle aspects, and then combining the respective classifications together.

Abstract:Proctor's work on staircase plane partitions yields an enumeration of lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon on the triangular lattice. Rohatgi recently extended this tiling enumeration to a halved hexagon with a triangle removed from the boundary. In this paper we prove a generalization of the results of Proctor and Rohatgi by enumerating lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon in which an array of adjacent triangles has been removed from the boundary.

Abstract:Recent work by Forsgård indicates that not every convex lattice polygon arises as the characteristic polygon of an affine dimer or, equivalently, an admissible oriented line arrangement on the torus in general position. We begin the classification of convex lattice polygons arising as characteristic polygons of affine dimers. We present several general constructions of new affine dimers from old, and an algorithm for finding affine dimers with prescribed polygon. With these tools we prove that all lattice triangles, generalised parallelograms, and polygons of genus at most two admit an affine dimer.

Abstract:We investigate a new family of regions that is the universal generalization of three well-known region families in the field of enumeration of tilings: the quasi-regular hexagons, the semi-hexagons, and the halved hexagons. We prove a simple product formula for the number of tilings of these new regions. Our main result also yields the enumerations of two special classes of plane partitions with restricted parts.

Abstract:We use the subgraph replacement method to investigate new properties of the tilings of regions on the square lattice with diagonals drawn in. In particular, we show that the centrally symmetric tilings of a generalization of the Aztec diamond are always enumerated by a simple product formula. This result generalizes the previous work of Ciucu (1997) and Yang (1992) about symmetric tilings of the Aztec diamond. We also use our method to prove a closed-form product formula for the number of centrally symmetric tilings of a quasi-hexagon.

Abstract:This tract has two purposes: to show what is known about the n-dimensional unit cubes and to demonstrate how Analysis, Algebra, Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Hyperbolic Geometry, Number Theory, can be applied to the study of them. The unit cubes, from any point of view, are among the most important and fascinating objects in an n-dimensional Euclidean space. However, our knowledge about them is still quite limited and many basic problems remain unsolved. In this Tract eight topics about the unit cubes are introduced: cross sections, projections, inscribed simplices, triangulations, 0/1 polytopes, Minkowski's conjecture, Furtwangler's conjecture, and Keller's conjecture. In particular the author demonstrates how deep analysis like log concave measure and the Brascamp-Lieb inequality can deal with the cross section problem, how Hyperbolic Geometry helps with the triangulation problem, how group rings can deal with Minkowski's conjecture and Furtwangler's conjecture, and how Graph Theory handles Keller's conjecture.

Abstract:We completely classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent quadrilaterals. As part of the classification, we also present a modern version of the classification of edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent triangles. Together with our series of papers that classifies edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons, we complete the classification of edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent polygons.
