Abstract:Under the condition that the pump of the counter-pumped fiber Raman amplifiers is intensity-modulated, the effects of pump noise on the performances of high speed WDM systems are investigated through numerical simulation. The results show that the effect of high frequency pump noise is greater than the low frequency ones, moreover, the consumption and fluctuation of pump powers will make the performance of the system with larger channel spacing degrade further.

Abstract:The analytic method is used to analyze the range of quasi-phase matching and the evolution of the phase matching in the case of pump depletion, and the expression for the phase matching is given. The evolution process of four-wave mixing gain under pump depletion is compared to the case in small-signal approximation. In the case of pump depletion, with the increase of the transfer power, the linear mismatch factor corresponding to the total phase matching gradually tends to 0 and the quasi-phase matching range also becomes narrower. By determining the quasi-phase matching rang, the cascaded four-wave mixing process in wavelength division multiplex or space division multiplexing systems can be simplified for analysis. The small signal approximation model is only suitable for the case that the transfer power is far less than the pump power, and the linear mismatch factor at the total phase matching is not dependent on the length of the fiber.

Abstract:. This paper investigates the effects of pump phase modulation (PM) on the noise characteristics of fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs) theoretically. Abstract:Four-wave mixing in a monolayer graphene-covered tapered fiber is theoretically analyzed by taking into account the influence of the graphene layer on the light-field distribution. A figure-of-merit (FOM) coefficient, considering both the high nonlinearity and the heavy absorption, is redefined to evaluate nonlinear performance. The fiber diameter and length are optimized to acquire a higher FOM. Using such a graphene-covered tapered fiber with an optimal diameter of 0.736 μm, a maximum conversion efficiency of −38.07 dB is numerically obtained for the 1.55 μm pump when the graphene length is 34.4 μm and the peak pump power is 10 W. Moreover, a 3 dB bandwidth as broad as 430 nm can be realized in the 1.55 μm telecommunication band.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:We investigated the issue of parametric bandwidth for a collinear quasi-phase-matching (QPM) optical parametric amplification (OPA). Mathematical model for evaluating the parametric bandwidth tolerance of the OPA was derived by expanding the wave-vector mismatch in Taylor series and taking the first two terms into consideration for accuracy. Based on the model, the variation of pump acceptance spectral bandwidth with parametric wavelength was discussed. The correlating curve of the pump wavelength and the parametric wavelength was obtained for the largest pump acceptance spectral bandwidth. These results were compared to that obtained by numerically calculating the parametric gain curves of OPA when pumped with different Gauss bandwidths by means of three-wave mixing equations directly, and were found to be in good accordance. The results presented are helpful for specifying the optimal pump wavelength of the parametric amplification and oscillation.

Abstract:In this paper we theoretically study ultrafast four-wave mixing (FWM) in fibre optical parametric amplifiers. The nonlinear coupled-amplitude equations are applied to discuss the contributions of self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, FWM, temporal walk-off, group-velocity dispersion and third-order dispersion in a degenerate FWM process. In the case of nondispersive FWM, the pulse duration remains nearly unchanged while the shape is distorted and the spectrum exhibits asymmetric broadening in the region where the pump, signal and idler pulses are temporally overlapped. In the case of dispersive FWM, the combined effect of dispersion and nonlinearity leads to both temporal and spectral changes in all the propagation length.
Optimizing Spectral Phase Transfer in Four-Wave Mixing with Gas-filled Capillaries: A Trade-off Study

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM) in gas-filled hollow-core capillaries, a nonlinear optical process that mixes signal and pump photon frequencies to generate idler frequency photons, offers a method for precise spectral phase transfer from signal to idler at ultrashort timescales and extreme powers. However, this regime is challenged by competing linear and nonlinear dynamics, leading to significant trade-offs between spectral phase transfer and conversion efficiency. Our computational investigation focuses on upconversion of femtosecond pulses from the infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV), a range notoriously difficult to manipulate. We explore an intermediate energy regime that strikes an optimal balance between FWM-mediated phase-transfer fidelity and nonlinear conversion efficiency. By adjusting the energy ratios and spectral phase profiles of the input signal, we achieve conversion efficiencies of approximately 5%-15% while maintaining an effectively quasi-linear spectral phase transfer. These findings contribute to establishing first-principles and scaling laws essential for applications such as high-precision imaging, spectroscopy, quantum transduction, and distributed entangled interconnects, facilitating advanced control of ultrafast photonic and electronic wavepackets in quantum materials with unprecedented spatial and temporal precision.

Abstract:A higher degree of entanglement of entangled sources in quantum communications is always desired and can be achieved with high nonlinear gains. The dressing of atomic coherence and optical pumping can be considered as effective parameters to obtain such entangled sources. In this regard, we have experimentally studied doubly dressed effects in a small range of frequency, and optical pumping and de-pumping effects over a wide frequency range in multi-level atomic system in order to enhance the nonlinear gain. The multi-mode phenomenon that results from the multi-peak of Autler-Townes splitting can be observed at the large beam size of the pinhole of the pump field. Theoretical calculations fit well with the experimentally measured results. The dressing of atomic coherence and optical pumping lead to the enhancement of nonlinear gain up to 8.2 when the original nonlinear gain is 4.7.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the main constrains for high efficiency wavelength conversion of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Using multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques, high efficiency wavelength conversion of DPSK signals is achieved with the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effects effectively suppressed. Our analysis shows that there is a compromise between conversion efficiency and converted idler degradation. By optimizing the pump phase modulation configuration, the converted DPSK idler's degradation can be dramatically decreased through balancing SBS suppression and pump phase modulation degradation. Our simulation results also show that these multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques are more appropriate for the future high bit rate systems.

Abstract:Optical wavelength conversion (OWC) is expected to be a desirable function in future optical transparent networks. Since high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is more sensitive to the phase noise, in the OWC of high-order QAM signals, it is crucial to suppress the extra noise introduced in the OWC subsystem, especially for the scenario with multiple cascaded OWCs. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a pump-linewidth-tolerant OWC scheme suitable for high-order QAM signals using coherent two-tone pumps. Using 3.5-MHz-linewidth distributed feedback (DFB) lasers as pump sources, our scheme enables wavelength conversion of both 16QAM and 64QAM signals with negligible power penalty, in a periodically-poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) waveguide based OWC. We also demonstrate the performance of pump phase noise cancellation, showing that such coherent two-tone pump schemes can eliminate the need for ultra-narrow linewidth pump lasers and enable practical implementation of low-cost OWC in future dynamic optical networks.

Abstract:An important challenge for implementing optical signal processing functions such as wavelength conversion or wavelength data exchange (WDE) is to avoid the introduction of linear and nonlinear phase noise in the subsystem. This is particularly important for phase noise sensitive, high-order quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical data exchange scheme through cascaded 2nd-order nonlinearities in periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides using coherent pumping. The proposed coherent pumping scheme enables noise from the coherent pumps to be cancelled out in the swapped data after WDE, even with broad linewidth distributed feedback (DFB) pump lasers. Hence, this scheme allows phase noise tolerant processing functions, enabling the low-cost implementation of WDE for high-order QAM signals. We experimentally demonstrate WDEs between 10-Gbaud 4QAM (4QAM) signal and 12.5-Gbaud 4QAM (16QAM) signal with 3.5-MHz linewidth DFB pump lasers and 50-GHz channel spacing. Error-free operation is observed for the swapped QAM signals with coherent DFB pumping whilst use of free-running DFB pumps leads to visible error floors and unrecoverable phase errors. The phase noise cancellation in the coherent pump scheme is further confirmed by study of the recovered carrier phase of the converted signals. In addition to pump phase noise, the influence of crosstalk caused by the finite extinction ratio in WDE is also experimentally investigated for the swapped QAM signals.
