Abstract:Research question: The small but growing body of research on the team vs. team competition focuses on predicting the winner based on multilevel factors including the team’s strength and prior relations among team members within a team. Our research demonstrates the significance and power of prior relations among members of the competing teams in predicting the outcome of a contest. Research methods: We use data over a period of 8-seasons of the Indian Premier League, to demonstrate the effects of competing against former teammates on the outcome of a Cricket match. If two teams A and B are competing in a match, and nA players from A are former teammates of players on B and nB players from B are former teammates of players on A, then the larger between nA and nB predicts which team will have a competitive advantage over the other team. We call the magnitude of this difference the “ecosystem” factor in predicting performance. Results and findings: Using regression models, Exponential Random Graph Models, and Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure we find that the ecosystem factor significantly improves the team’s odds of winning. Implications: These findings provide novel empirical insights to deepen our understanding of the impacts of team assembly mechanisms on performance. Our findings have implications for franchise owners in the Indian Premier League, specifically during the bidding process. While recruiting a player franchise owners should not rely solely on the player’s ability but also leverage the rivalry between former teammates.

Abstract:This article regards university students learning team as study object, from the perspective of the field research team work and team interaction two types of shared mental models and team performance of the potential relationship, to further validate and analyze the relationship between the two. The results show that: (1) University students learning team shared mental models on team performance has a significant positive impact, team work and team interaction with two types of shared mental model of team performance are significantly positive correlation; (2) University students learning team to achieve the team work model is higher than the team interaction model, and better stability of the team work model, the difference is smaller; (3) University students learning team in team size will affect their differences to form a consistent shared mental model, but the subjects of individual characteristics will not affect them; (4) Team characteristics and the subjects of individual characteristics on the part of the dimension of team performance has a significant impact..

Abstract:Interdisciplinary teams are established in scientific research with the goal of solving complex problems. Given their increasing importance, it is not surprising that there has been considerable attention focused on the processes by which interdisciplinary teams collaborate after they are assembled. However, there has been much less research exploring the factors affecting the assembly of such teams. In this paper, we investigate the formation and the success of interdisciplinary scientific research teams. We test our hypotheses on a sample of 1,103 successful and unsuccessful grant proposals submitted to two NSF interdisciplinary programs during a 3-year period. Our results indicate that individuals’ likelihood of collaborating on a proposal is higher among those with longer tenure, lower institutional tier, lower H-index, along with higher levels of prior co-authorship and citation relationships. Our results also indicate individuals’ likelihood of collaborating on a successful proposal is higher among those with longer tenure, (female) gender, lower institutional tier, lower H-index, higher levels of prior co-authorship, but lower levels of prior citation relationships.

Abstract:This research work aims to develop an analytical approach for optimizing team formation and predicting team performance in a competitive environment based on data on the competitors' skills prior to the team formation. There are several approaches in scientific literature to optimize and predict a team's performance. However, most studies employ fine-grained skill statistics of the individual members or constraints such as teams with a set group of members. Currently, no research tackles the highly constrained domain of the FIRST Robotics Competition. This research effort aims to fill this gap by providing an analytical method for optimizing and predicting team performance in a competitive environment while allowing these constraints and only using metrics on previous team performance, not on each individual member's performance. We apply our method to the drafting process of the FIRST Robotics competition, a domain in which the skills change year-over-year, team members change throughout the season, each match only has a superficial set of statistics, and alliance formation is key to competitive success. First, we develop a method that could extrapolate individual members' performance based on overall team performance. An alliance optimization algorithm is developed to optimize team formation and a deep neural network model is trained to predict the winning team, both using highly post-processed real-world data. Our method is able to successfully extract individual members' metrics from overall team statistics, form competitive teams, and predict the winning team with 84.08% accuracy.

Quantifying dynamics of failure across science, startups, and security

Abstract:Human achievements are often preceded by repeated attempts that initially fail, yet little is known about the mechanisms governing the dynamics of failure. Here, building on the rich literature on innovation, human dynamics and learning, we develop a simple one-parameter model that mimics how successful future attempts build on those past. Analytically solving this model reveals a phase transition that separates dynamics of failure into regions of stagnation or progression, predicting that near the critical threshold, agents who share similar characteristics and learning strategies may experience fundamentally different outcomes following failures. Below the critical point, we see those who explore disjoint opportunities without a pattern of improvement, and above it, those who exploit incremental refinements to systematically advance toward success. The model makes several empirically testable predictions, demonstrating that those who eventually succeed and those who do not may be initially similar, yet are characterized by fundamentally distinct failure dynamics in terms of the efficiency and quality of each subsequent attempt. We collected large-scale data from three disparate domains, tracing repeated attempts by (i) NIH investigators to fund their research, (ii) innovators to successfully exit their startup ventures, and (iii) terrorist organizations to post casualties in violent attacks, finding broadly consistent empirical support across all three domains. Together, our findings unveil identifiable yet previously unknown early signals that allow us to identify failure dynamics that will lead to ultimate victory or defeat. Given the ubiquitous nature of failures and the paucity of quantitative approaches to understand them, these results represent a crucial step toward deeper understanding of the complex dynamics beneath failures, the essential prerequisites for success.

Abstract:Understanding the collective dynamics behind the success of ideas, products, behaviors, and social actors is critical for decision-making across diverse contexts, including hiring, funding, career choices, and the design of interventions for social change. Methodological advances and the increasing availability of big data now allow for a broader and deeper understanding of the key facets of success. Recent studies unveil regularities beneath the collective dynamics of success, pinpoint underlying mechanisms, and even enable predictions of success across diverse domains, including science, technology, business, and the arts. However, this research also uncovers troubling biases that challenge meritocratic views of success. This review synthesizes the growing, cross-disciplinary literature on the collective dynamics behind success and calls for further research on cultural influences, the origins of inequalities, the role of algorithms in perpetuating them, and experimental methods to further probe causal mechanisms behind success. Ultimately, these efforts may help to better align success with desired societal values.

The Secrets of Great Teamwork

Abstract:Over the years, as teams have grown more diverse, dispersed, digital, and dynamic, collaboration has become more complex. But though teams face new challenges, their success still depends on a core set of fundamentals. As J. Richard Hackman, who began researching teams in the 1970s, discovered, what matters most isn't the personalities or behavior of the team members; it's whether a team has a compelling direction, a strong structure, and a supportive context. In their own research, Haas and Mortensen have found that teams need those three "enabling conditions" now more than ever. But their work also revealed that today's teams are especially prone to two corrosive problems: "us versus them" thinking and incomplete information. Overcoming those pitfalls requires a new enabling condition: a shared mindset. This article details what team leaders should do to establish the four foundations for success. For instance, to promote a shared mindset, leaders should foster a common identity and common understanding among team members, with techniques such as "structured unstructured time." The authors also describe how to evaluate a team's effectiveness, providing an assessment leaders can take to see what's working and where there's room for improvement.

Abstract:The influence of teammates' shared mental models on team processes and performance was tested using 56 undergraduate dyads who "flew" a series of missions on a personal-computer-based flight-combat simulation. The authors both conceptually and empirically distinguished between teammates' task- and team-based mental models and indexed their convergence or "sharedness" using individually completed paired-comparisons matrices analyzed using a network-based algorithm. The results illustrated that both shared-team- and task-based mental models related positively to subsequent team process and performance. Furthermore, team processes fully mediated the relationship between mental model convergence and team effectiveness. Results are discussed in terms of the role of shared cognitions in team effectiveness and the applicability of different interventions designed to achieve such convergence.

Abstract:Cooperation is the cornerstone of human evolutionary success. Like no other species, we champion the sacrifice of personal benefits for the common good, and we work together to achieve what we are unable to achieve alone. Knowledge and information from past generations is thereby often instrumental in ensuring we keep cooperating rather than deteriorating to less productive ways of coexistence. Here we present a mathematical model based on evolutionary game theory that shows how using the past as the benchmark for evolutionary success, rather than just current performance, significantly improves cooperation in the future. Interestingly, the details of just how the past is taken into account play only second-order importance, whether it be a weighted average of past payoffs or just a single payoff value from the past. Cooperation is promoted because information from the past disables fast invasions of defectors, thus enhancing the long-term benefits of cooperative behavior.

How Dynamics in Perceptual Shared Cognition and Team Potency Predict Team Performance

Abstract:In a longitudinal field study of 37 professional project teams over almost 2 years, we investigated the dynamic relationship between perceptual shared cognition and team potency in predicting team performance. Our main results show that initial levels and change in perceptual shared cognition explain team performance outcomes through initial levels and change in team potency, respectively. Thereby, our findings confirmed that initial levels and change in team potency operated as an explanatory mechanism for the relationship between shared cognition and team performance. Interestingly, shared cognition change shows larger benefits on team performance outcomes than initial levels. In addition, we show differential relationships of task‐ and time‐related shared cognition with the quality and timeliness criteria of team performance. Whereas shared task cognition predicts team performance in terms of both output quality and timeliness, shared temporal cognition predicts timeliness only. Altogether, this research suggests the unique theoretical value of change in perceptual shared cognition in explaining team performance and of affective‐motivational team states as an alternative explanatory mechanism for the impact of shared cognition on team effectiveness.Practitioner points Team members’ perceptions of being on the same page about their collaborative task and its temporal elements boost their confidence in the team's capabilities, thereby improving team performance. Team members’ perceived agreement about the ‘what’ of their collaborative task is conducive to both project quality and timeliness. Their perceived agreement on the ‘when’ of task accomplishment further facilitates a timely project completion. Team members’ cognitive consensus about the task and its temporal elements are subject to change, so is their confidence in the team's capabilities. Initial disagreements do not necessarily warrant eventual detriments, but performance excellence does require that cognitive consensus is being maintained and improved throughout the project.

Abstract:In the traditional setup of public goods game all players are involved in every available groups and the mutual benefit is shared among competing cooperator and defector strategies. But in real life situations the group formation of players could be more sophisticated because not all players are attractive enough for others to participate in a joint venture. What if only those players can initiate a group formation and establish a game who are successful enough to the neighbors? To elaborate this idea we employ a modified protocol and demonstrate that a carefully chosen threshold to establish joint venture could efficiently improve the cooperation level even if the synergy factor would suggest a full defector state otherwise. The microscopic mechanism which is responsible for this effect is based on the asymmetric consequences of competing strategies: while the success of a cooperator provides a long-time well-being for the neighborhood, the temporary advantage of defection cannot be maintained if the protocol is based on the success of leaders.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms underlying participants' performance in crowdsourcing contests is a critical issue for practitioners to extract maximum value from crowdsourcing contests. However, as a vital factor, research on the role of past successful experience in crowdsourcing contests lacks consistent conclusions and further analysis of its specific factors. Using data collected from Epek.com, we bring together two disparate but related streams of literature and provide a novice understanding of the complicated, non-linear relationship between past successful experience and future performance. Then, we use text mining to capture the specific factors of tasks and experience and verify their moderating effects. The results show that the solver's success experience has an inverted U- shaped relationship with future performance in crowdsourcing contests. There is a weaker inverted U-shaped relationship when the solver's experience is more diverse or their past success experience is more similar to the current crowdsourcing task. The implications of our findings for researchers and practitioners are discussed as well.
Shaping the Shared Mental Model: How Leader Humility Helps Teams to Learn

Abstract:Although an increasing amount of the leadership literature argues that leader humility is beneficial to team learning, few studies have examined this effect directly and, as such, little is known about why leader humility has such important effects or when these effects can be amplified or attenuated. Utilizing a survey of 305 employees on 89 teams, we found a positive relationship existing between leader humility and team learning. The results also indicated that a shared mental model was an important mechanism revealing why leader humility could stimulate team members to learn. In addition, we found that the learning effect stimulated by leader humility was much stronger on teams having a high collective promotion focus instead of a high collective prevention focus. Theoretical implications and managerial practices were also discussed.

Abstract:Advances in information technology bring changes to the nature of work by facilitating companies to go beyond the wisdom of their workforce and tap into the “wisdom of the crowd” via online crowdsourcing contests. In these contests, active and motivated individuals collaborate in the form of self-organized teams that compete for rewards. Using a rich data set of 732 teams in 52 contests collected from the crowdsourcing platform, Kaggle.com, from its launch in April 2010 to July 2012, we studied how the allocation of members’ social and intellectual capital within a virtual team affects team performance in online crowdsourcing contests. Our econometric analysis uses a rank-ordered logistic regression model, and suggests that the effect of a member’s social and intellectual capital on team performance varies depending on his or her roles. Though a team leader’s social capital and a team expert’s intellectual capital significantly influence team performance, a team leader’s intellectual capital and a team expert’s social capital do not. Further, we found that the alignment of a member’s social and intellectual capital within a team has a significant influence on team performance. Moreover, the intensity of the competition moderates the impact. When a contest is highly competitive, the social and intellectual capital alignment negatively affects team performance, and when the competitive intensity is low, this alignment positively affects team performance. Our findings provide insights into improving performance in team-based competitions in crowdsourcing communities.

Abstract:In recent years, companies have tended to use student competitions to obtain innovative ideas or proposals for solving problems. Through multi-stage competition, the coordination and operation of the team members gain in importance as teams deal with the different tasks in the different stages of the competition. Previous studies have shown that leadership positively impacts team performance in a formal organization. However, leadership functions differently between teams in organizations with formal leaders and teams in multi-stage innovation competitions with informal leaders. Little research has focused on student team leadership and team performance in student competitions. This study focuses on multi-stage innovation and creativity competitions and is intended to explore the effects of team diversity, emergent leadership, and shared leadership on team performance. Data were collected from 62 responses from 23 teams collected in a survey and were analyzed using the partial least squares method to test hypotheses. The findings show that (1) team diversity significantly impacts shared leadership, (2) emergent leadership significantly influences shared leadership at the individual but not at a team level, and (3) shared leadership significantly affects self-perceived team performance but not judgments from outsiders. Our study offers blueprints for firms to design and organize student competitions.

Abstract:More companies have started to adopt a model of self-managed team as their primary work design. As work environments get more complex, an appointed leader alone cannot fulfill all the necessary leadership responsibilities of a team. In this manner, the shared leadership within a team is of great importance for today's work environments. The primary purpose of the present study was to examine an antecedent of shared leadership. Focusing on leadership motivation, this study investigated how team members’ motivation to lead affects shared leadership of the team. This study also examined the effects of shared leadership on team performance using an objective team performance measure, which little previous studies have investigated. Data were obtained from 57 teams consisting of 3 to 5 members. They performed a computer-based business strategy game. Findings showed that the teams consisting of members with a high level of motivation to lead scores were positively related to shared leadership and shared leadership significantly predicted team performance. Theoretical and practical implications of this study are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we tackle the problem of innovation spreading from a modeling point of view. We consider a networked system of individuals, with a competition between two groups. We show its relation to the innovation spreading issues. We introduce an abstract model and show how it can be interpreted in this framework, as well as what conclusions we can draw form it. We further explain how model-derived conclusions can help to investigate the original problem, as well as other, similar problems. The model is an agent-based model assuming simple binary attributes of those agents. It uses a majority dynamics (Ising model to be exact), meaning that individuals attempt to be similar to the majority of their peers, barring the occasional purely individual decisions that are modeled as random. We show that this simplistic model can be related to the decision-making during innovation adoption processes. The majority dynamics for the model mean that when a dominant attribute, representing an existing practice or solution, is already established, it will persists in the system. We show however, that in a two group competition, a smaller group that represents innovation users can still convince the larger group, if it has high self-support. We argue that this conclusion, while drawn from a simple model, can be applied to real cases of innovation spreading. We also show that the model could be interpreted in different ways, allowing different problems to profit from our conclusions.

Abstract:Among natural biological flocks/swarms or even mass social activities, when the collective behaviors of the followers has been dominated by the moving direction or opinion of one leader group, it seems very difficult for later-coming leaders to reverse the orientation of the mass followers, especially when they are in quantitative minority. This Letter reports a counter-intuitive phenomenon, Following the Later-coming Minority, provided that the late-comers obey a favorable distribution pattern which enables them to spread their influence to as many followers as possible in a given time and to accumulate enough power to govern these followers. We introduce a discriminant index to quantify the whole group's orientation under competing leadership, which helps to design an economic way for the minority later-coming leaders to defeat the dominating majority leaders solely by optimizing their distribution pattern. Our investigation provides new insights into the effective leadership in biological systems, with meaningful implication to social and industrial applications.

Abstract:<p>The role of shared leadership behavior in a project context has received insufficient empirical and theoretical attention. This paper explores its influence on project success, specifically in an IT project context. The paper additionally investigates the mediating role of knowledge sharing, cohesion, and trust in team as moderators. We collected the data of 236 team members in IT projects on two-time points and analyzed the conditional process model through PROCESS after achieving model fit. Results revealed that shared leadership amplifies project success directly and via knowledge sharing and cohesion. Slope analysis revealed that trust in team has an interaction effect with cohesion and knowledge sharing which also affects project success. The study discussed the practical implications and drew conclusions from the results.</p>

Abstract:We propose a controlled simulation within a competitive sum-zero environment as a proxy for disaggregating components of success. Given a simulation of the Risk board game, we consider (a) Talent to be one of three rule-based strategies used by players; (b) Context as the setting of each run of the game with opponents' strategies, goals and luck; and (c) Perspective as the objective of each player. Success is attained when a first player conquers its goal. We simulate 100,000 runs of an agent-based model and analyze the results. The simulation results strongly suggest that luck, talent and context are all relevant to determine success. Perspective -- as the description of the goal that defines success -- is not. As such, we present a quantitative, reproducible environment in which we are able to significantly separate the concepts, reproducing previous results of the literature and adding arguments for context and perspective. Finally, we also find that the simulation offers insights on the relevance of resilience and opportunity.
