Abstract:Purpose: The scaffold structure is an important part of bone tissue engineering, and it directly determines the final performance of cell growth. A parametric design method for porous skull scaffolds based on isoparametric mapping and finite element theory is proposed, with the aim of improving skull defects. Methods: To ensure the biomimetic features of bone tissue, a human skull sample was first scanned by micro-computed tomography (CT), and the trabecular bone distribution characteristics were obtained. A shape model of the skull scaffold was then built, and the model was divided into eight-node hexahedral meshes according to the micropore size distribution law of the cancellous bone. Finally, referring to the morphological data of the scanned trabecular bone, a micro solid unit model was constructed by P-type triply periodic minimal surfaces (P-TPMS). The P-TPMS unit body was further mapped into the constituent hexahedral meshed units through an isoparametric mapping algorithm, and the porous scaffold model was generated. Results: The results show that the microstructure and porosity of the scaffold are consistent with the skull sample; the micropore shape, size and porosity of the scaffold are changeable; and the obtained porous skull scaffold has uniform and reliable mechanical properties.
