Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogel fibers based on natural polymers provide an immense focus for a new generation of electronics due to their flexibility and knittability. The feasibility of utilizing pure natural polymer-based hydrogel fibers could be drastically improved if their mechanical and transparent performances satisfy the requirements of actual practice. Herein, we report a facile fabrication strategy for significantly stretchable and sensitive sodium alginate ionic hydrogel fibers (SAIFs), by glycerol initiating physical crosslinking and by CaCl2 inducing ionic crosslinking. The obtained ionic hydrogel fibers not only show significant stretchability (tensile strength of 1.55 MPa and fracture strain of ∼161 %), but also exhibit wide-range sensing, satisfactorily stable, rapidly responsive, and multiply sensitive abilities to external stimulus. In addition, the ionic hydrogel fibers have excellent transparency (over 90 % in a wide wavelength range), and good anti-evaporation and anti-freezing properties. Furthermore, the SAIFs have been easily knitted into a textile, and successfully applied as wearable sensors to recognize human motions, by observing the output electrical signals. Our methodology for fabrication intelligent SAIFs will shed light on artificial flexible electronics and other textile-based strain sensors.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted a myriad of interest due to their potential applications for human motion monitoring, personal healthcare diagnosis and so forth. However, fabrication of hydrogel-based strain sensors integrating with ultrastretchability, adhesiveness, strain sensitivity, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning function is still a challenge. Herein, a new type of semi-interpenetrating multifunctional hydrogels, which integrated all above practical features magically were prepared via a facile one-pot in-situ radical copolymerization method. Thereinto, [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and acrylamide (AAm) copolymers cross-linked byN,N '-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) served as the soft and functional matrix, whereas alginate was employed as the enhanced component. The transparent zwitterionic hydrogels had a max elongation and ionic conductivity of 1353% and 0.15 S/m, respectively. They could adhere onto various surfaces, including steel, glass, skin, and rubber. The repeatable adhesiveness, linear strain sensitivity within 0%-250% tensile strain and 0%-30% compressive strain provided remarkable working range and using stability. What's more notable was that the biocompatibility and self-cleaning function tested by MTT, live/dead assay, allergy patch tests, and plate colony-counting method imparted great possibility of practical application for strain sensors to hydrogels from a biological point of view.
Highly Sensitive Pressure and Strain Sensors Based on Stretchable and Recoverable Ion-Conductive Physically Cross-Linked Double-Network Hydrogels

Abstract:Ion-conductive hydrogel sensors have attracted great research interests for applications in wearable devices, electronic skins, and implantable sensors, but most such sensors are fragile, with low conductivity and sensitivity. This study reports on novel ion-conductive double network hydrogels with a cross-linked helical structure, hydrophobic association, and metal-ion coordination. The helical κ-carrageenan first network and the second network cross-linked by Pluronic F127 diacrylate micelles and tridentate Fe3+–COO– coordination work synergistically to show the tensile strength of 2.7 MPa, fracture strain of 1400%, and tensile toughness of 9.82 MJ m–3 and fatigue resistance against cyclic loadings with high strains. The hydrogels show an ion conductivity of 1.15 S m–1, a strain sensitivity of up to 2.8, and a pressure sensitivity of 0.33 kPa–1. Sensor arrays fabricated from the conductive hydrogels provide an in-plane detection of pressures less than 200 Pa. Abstract:Construction of highly stretchable and sensitive flexible strain sensors is of great significance for wide applications in human-computer interaction, wearable devices, and electronic skins. However, it turned out to be not effortless to integrate the two seemingly contrary features of high stretchability and sensitivity into a system. Herein, we designed a nanocomposite conductive hydrogel (NCCH) composed of zwitterionic poly(HEAA-co-SBMA) polymers and lithium magnesium silicate (XLG) by means of multi-reversible molecular interactions (MRMIs) including borate ester bonds between polyHEAA and borax, hydrogen bonds, and polySBMA-XLG-based electrostatic interaction, endowing the NCCH with enhanced mechanical, self-healing, adhesive, biocompatible, and sensing performances. The MRMI method enabled NCCHs to obtain an excellent stretchability (-1080 %)/compressibility (-98.5 %), a tensile strength of -0.06 MPa, a good self-healing with a fracture strain recovery of 90.5 %, and a strong adhesion on various hard and soft substrates (e.g. a adhesive shear force of 60 kPa to pigskin tissues). Besides, the integration of zwitterionic polySBMA and conductive XLG promoted charge transfer.by optimal ioinic channels. Based on these outstanding strengths, the NCCHs were farther rationally fabricated as multifunctional strain sensors with remarkable sensing stability for fast and accurately detecting strain/ pressure-induced deformation, joint motions, and animal heartbeats. Notably, the excellent self-healing property of NCCH sensors can facilitate their long-period usage and complete recyclability for avoiding wastes. The new MRMI-based NCCH sensor without any conductive additives is deemed to provide a new strategy for broadening their multifunctional strain sensor and healthcare monitoring applications.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors with high stretchability, sensitivity, and stability are undoubtedly urgently required for potential applications in intelligent soft robots, human-machine interaction, health monitoring, and other fields. However, most current flexible pressure sensors are unable to endure large deformation and are prone to performance degradation or even failure during frequent operation due to their multilayered structures. Here, we propose a stretchable all-nanofiber iontronic pressure sensor that is composed of ionic nanofiber membranes used as dielectric layers and liquid metal used as electrodes. This sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 1.08 kPa-1 over a wide range of 0-300 kPa, with a fast response-relaxation time of about 18/22 ms and excellent stability. The high sensitivity comes from the electric double layer formed at the ionic film/electrode interface, while high stretchability and stability are enabled by in-situ encapsulated all-nanofiber structures. As a proof of concept, a prototype sensor array is integrated into a soft pneumatic gripper, demonstrating its capability of pressure perception and object recognition during the grasping process. Thus, the scheme provides another excellent strategy to fabricate stretchable pressure sensors with superb performance in terms of high stretchability, sensitivity, and stability.

Abstract:The novel conductive hydrogels are developed with high stretchability, ultra‐softness, and good self‐healing ability. The hydrogels are formed in the binary solvent, in which the polyaniline nanoparticles are incorporated into the polymeric scaffolds via the multiple dynamic interactions. Herein, composite hydrogel‐based sensors are proposed, with a low detection limit, highly linear dependence, and excellent anti‐fatigue performance. Herein, novel conductive composite hydrogels are developed with high stretchability, ultra‐softness, excellent conductivity, and good self‐healing ability. The hydrogels are formed in the water/glycerol binary solvent system, in which the polyaniline nanoparticles (PANI‐NPs) are incorporated into the poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate‐co‐acrylic acid) (P(PEG‐co‐AA)) scaffolds via the dynamically electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds. The PANI‐NPs serve as conductive fillers to assign conductivity to the hydrogel, while the enhanced interfacial interactions between the PANI‐NPs and P(PEG‐co‐AA) matrix endow the hydrogel with high stretchability (>1000%), low modulus (≈6 kPa), excellent elasticity (η = 0.07, energy loss coefficient at 500% strain), and fast self‐healing ability (93.3% after 10 mins). Particularly, the desirable anti‐freezing property is achieved by introducing a binary solvent system. The composite hydrogel‐based sensors are proposed, with the states‐independent properties, low detection limit (0.5% strain and 25 Pa), highly linear dependence, and excellent anti‐fatigue performance (>1000 cycles). In addition, during the practical wearable sensing tests, various external stimulus and human motions can be detected, including speaking, writing, joint movement, or even small water droplets, indicating the potential applications for the next generation of epidermal sensors.

Abstract:Due to their promising applications in health monitoring, wearable flexible sensors based on hydrogel have gained considerable attention as modern medicine advances. However, it is still challenging for hydrogel-based wearable flexible sensors to be integrated with high stretchability, multifunctionality, and biocompatibility. Herein, we designed novel flexible multifunctional sensors based on ionic conductive double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(AM-co-AAc)), sodium alginate (SA), and calcium chloride (CaCl2) by simple two-step method of copolymerization and soaking. Abundant carboxyl groups on SA and P(AM-co-AAc) chains and their capacity to bind with Ca2+ were utilized to design a double network, providing the hydrogels with high stretchability and toughness. Ca2+ endowed the hydrogels with enhanced conductivity and sensitivity, while P(AM-co-AAc) enabled the hydrogels to respond to multi-stimuli. The SA/P(AM-co-AAc)/Ca2+ hydrogels presented outstanding mechanical properties (elongation at break of 2626%, tensile strength of 372 kPa), great sensitivity (gauge factor up to 7.1), and excellent durability (1000 stretching-releasing cycles). It could detect human movements, touch, physiology (temperature and sweat), pH changes, and organic solvents. Besides, the hydrogel sensors displayed great biocompatibility. Therefore, this work extends the design and preparation of highly stretchable and multifunctional hydrogels to facilitate the applications of skin-friendly wearable sensors.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have become one of the most promising materials for skin-like sensors because of their excellent biocompatibility and mechanical flexibility. However, the limited stretchability, low toughness, and fatigue resistance lead to a narrow sensing region and insufficient durability of the hydrogel-based sensors. In this work, an extremely stretchable, highly tough, and anti-fatigue conductive nanocomposite hydrogel is prepared by integrating hydrophobic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into hydrophobically associated polyacrylamide (HAPAAm) hydrogel. In this conductive hydrogel, amphiphilic sodium dodecyl sulfate was used to ensure uniform dispersion of CNTs in the hydrogel network, and hydrophobic interactions between the hydrogel matrix and the CNT surface formed, greatly improving the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The obtained CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel showed excellent stretchability (ca. 3000%), toughness (3.42 MJ m-3), and great anti-fatigue property. Moreover, it exhibits both high tensile strain sensitivity in the wide strain ranges (gauge factor = 4.32, up to 1000%) and high linear sensitivity (0.127 kPa-1) in a large-pressure region within 0-50 kPa. The CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel-based sensors can sensitively and stably detect full-range human activities (e.g., elbow rotation, finger bending, swallowing motion, and pronouncing) and handwriting, demonstrating the CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel's potential as the wearable strain and pressure sensors for flexible devices.
Super Stretchable, Self‐Healing, Adhesive Ionic Conductive Hydrogels Based on Tailor‐Made Ionic Liquid for High‐Performance Strain Sensors

Abstract:A novel semi‐interpenetrating network polyacrylamide/phenylboronic acid‐ionic liquid/cellulose nanofibril hydrogel (PAM/PBA‐IL/CNF) is proposed based on a "tailor‐made" PBA‐IL with multiple roles. Benefiting from the ingenious structural design, the PAM/PBA‐IL/CNF simultaneously displays the excellent comprehensive merits: (i) a fine trade‐off between electrical and mechanical performance, (ii) high strain sensitivity, favorable adhesion, self‐healing property, transparency and water retention. Ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) integrate the conductive performance and soft nature of tissue‐like materials to imitate the features of human skin with mechanical and sensory traits; thus, they are considered promising substitutes for conventional rigid metallic conductors when fabricating human‐motion sensors. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, ionic conductivity, self‐healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a novel ICH platform is proposed by designing a phenylboronic acid‐ionic liquid (PBA‐IL) with multiple roles that simultaneously realize the highly mechanical, electrical, and versatile properties. This elaborately designed semi‐interpenetrating network ICH is fabricated via a facile one‐step approach by introducing cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) into the PBA‐IL/acrylamide cross‐linked network. Ingeniously, the dynamic boronic ester bonds and physical interactions (hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions) of the cross‐linked network endow these hydrogels with remarkable stretchability (1810 ± 38%), toughness (2.65 ± 0.03 MJ m−3), self‐healing property (92 ± 2% efficiency), adhesiveness, and transparency. Moreover, the construction of this material shows that CNFs can synergistically enhance mechanical performance and conductivity. The wide working strain range (≈1000%) and high sensitivity (GF = 8.36) make this ICH a promising candidate for constructing the next generation of gel‐based strain sensor platforms.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogel has recently garnered significant research attention due to its potential applications in the field of wearable and flexible electronics. Nonetheless, the integration of multifunctional and synergistic advantages, including reliable electronic properties, high swelling capacity, exceptional mechanical characteristics, and self-adhesive properties, presents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we have developed an ionic conductive hydrogel through the co-polymerization of 4-Acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and sodium acrylate using UV curing technology. The hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, superior swelling capacity, and remarkable self-adhesive attributes. The hydrogel serves as a highly sensitive strain sensor, enabling precise monitoring of both substantial and subtle human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates the capability to adhere to human skin, functioning as a human-machine interface for the detection of physiological signals, including electromyogram (EMG) signals, with low interfacial impedance. This work is anticipated to yield a new class of stretchable and conductive materials with diverse potential applications, ranging from flexible sensors and wearable bio-electronics to contributions in the field of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels possess both the physicochemical properties of hydrogels and the electrical properties of intrinsically conductive polymers. It is a versatile material that is widely used in various fields, such as supercapacitors, flexible energy storage, electronic devices, and sensors. Conductive hydrogels with self-adhesion properties can realize self-adhesion on the surface of the detected object to ensure the stability of detection signals. Inspired by the adhesion mechanism of mussels, tannic acid (TA) was modified on carbon nanotubes (TA-CNTs) were prepared on the surface of (MWCNT), which reduced the aggregation of carbon nanotubes, increased the dispersibility of carbon nanotubes in the hydrogel, and achieved good electrical conductivity and self-adhesion of the hydrogel, sodium alginate (SA), TA-CNTs synthesized a stretchable, self-adhesive, conductive double-network hydrogel by one-pot thermal initiation with stability. Hydrogen bonds between PAM and SA, which helps to construct the hydrogel networks with strong mechanical properties. The synthesized hydrogels have high strength, pliable adhesion, and strain sensitivity, showing great development potential in monitoring human motion and personal healthcare applications.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels, lauded for their electrical conductivity, precise information capture, biocompatibility, and extensibility, have gained prominence as ideal candidate materials for flexible wearable sensor applications. Nevertheless, these sensors must surmount numerous challenges such as environmental temperature variations, bacterial growth in high-humidity environments, low signal detection sensitivity, irreversible damage, and mechanical performance stability during use. In response to these challenges, we present a hydrophobic supramolecular and dynamic coordination double-network hydrogel, prepared through a solvent-exchange method, with an accelerated gelation rate. The coordination of dynamic hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds within the hydrophobic supramolecular network imbues the hydrogel with superior mechanical properties (elongation at break around 4900%, tensile strength approximately 506 kPa) and improved self-healing capabilities. This solvent-exchange-mediated hydrogel exhibits broad temperature resilience (−20–60 °C) and reliable repeatability. Additionally, the sensor enables wireless human signal monitoring with a rapid response time (75 ms) and heightened sensitivity (gauge factor = 22.34). The wearable sensor’s antibacterial efficacy effectively suppresses bacterial propagation in high-moisture hydrogels, with a bacterial inhibition rate of 99.9%. The findings from our series of studies reveal the successful fabrication of stable, flexible wearable sensors with self-healing, antibacterial, high sensitivity, and broad temperature tolerance characteristics, showcasing the immense potential for applications in wearable electronics, wireless monitoring, and human–machine interactions.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogel-based wearable strain sensors with tough, stretchable, self-recoverable, and highly sensitive properties are highly demanded for applications in electronic skin and human-machine interface. However, currently, hydrogel-based strain sensors put forward higher requirements on their biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and sensitivity. Herein, we report a poly(vinyl alcohol)/phytic acid/amino-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PVA/PA/NH-POSS) conductive composite hydrogel prepared via a facile freeze-thaw cycle method. Within this hydrogel, PA acts as a cross-linking agent and ionizes hydrogen ions to endow the material with ionic conductivity, while NH-POSS acts as a second cross-linking agent by increasing the cross-linking density of the three-dimensional network structure. The effect of the content of NH-POSS is investigated, and the composite hydrogel with 2 wt % NH-POSS displays a uniform and dense three-dimensional (3D) network microporous structure, high conductivity of 2.41 S/m, and tensile strength and elongation at break of 361 kPa and 363%, respectively. This hydrogel is biocompatible and has demonstrated the application as a strain sensor monitoring different human movements. The assembled sensor is stretchable, self-recoverable, and highly sensitive with fast response time (220 ms) and excellent sensitivity (GF = 3.44).

Abstract:Hydrogel-based flexible sensors hold significant potential for applications in skin-like electronics, human motion detection, and human-machine interfaces. The development of strain-sensitive hydrogel with high stretchability, self-healing, and high conductivity is highly sought after. A hydrogel sensor with a strain-sensitive semi-interpenetrating network consisting of polyacrylamide (PAM), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and alginate (SA). With environmentally benign KCl as a conductive filler, SA/PVA/PAM/KCl hydrogel has a high toughness (4.8 MJ m -3 ), high stretchability (1250%), high tensile strength (510 Kpa), excellent recoverability, and excellent self-adhesiveness toward various substrates. The hydrogel sensors present high sensitivity with good linearity in the majority of the detection range with a gauge factor (GF) over 6.78, a response time of 268 ms, and excellent durability. The ionic conductive hydrogel has shown excellent energy harvesting capability as a triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG). Multifunctional organic hydrogels provide a protocol for the design and preparation of multifunctional hydrogel for wearable electronics.

Abstract:The development of wearable electronic devices for human health monitoring requires materials with high mechanical performance and sensitivity. In this study, we present a novel transparent tissue-like ionogel-based wearable sensor based on silver nanowire-reinforced ionogel nanocomposites, P(AAm-co-AA) ionogel-Ag NWs composite. The composite exhibits a high stretchability of 605% strain and a moderate fracture stress of about 377 kPa. The sensor also demonstrates a sensitive response to temperature changes and electrostatic adsorption. By encapsulating the nanocomposite in a polyurethane transparent film dressing, we address issues such as skin irritation and enable multidirectional stretching. Measuring resistive changes of the ionogel nanocomposite in response to corresponding strain changes enables its utility as a highly stretchable wearable sensor with excellent performance in sensitivity, stability, and repeatability. The fabricated pressure sensor array exhibits great proficiency in stress distribution, capacitance sensing, and discernment of fluctuations in both external electric fields and stress. Our findings suggest that this material holds promise for applications in wearable and flexible strain sensors, temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and actuators.

Abstract:Stretchable strain sensor and temperature sensor are two essential components in e-skins and wearable electronics. Although great progress has been made in this field recently, some challenges like the linear sensitivity of the output signal to stimuli and transparency of the sensor have still not been overcome. Herein, we select the ionic liquid to replace the traditional solid conductive nanoparticles as the sensing components to be encapsulated in the tailored cavity inside the stretchable polydimethylsiloxane thin film to design the stretchable and transparent multifunctional sensors. This sensor exhibits various merits, such as high flexibility, transparency, highly sensitive to strain and temperature, and outstanding monotonicity and linearity of the outputted signals, which can be the promising candidate of stretchable strain sensor and temperature sensor in various fields. More interestingly, a feature of this sensor is that the resistance is only slightly increased under large tensile strain, which makes it possible for serving as the stretchable conductor simultaneously. This work proposes a new strategy that allows the creation of multifunctional sensor with high transparency, high sensitivity, and excellent linearity of the signal.Graphical abstract
