Abstract:Electrically conducting multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) incorporated bacterial cellulose (BC) nanocomposite (MWCNT/BC) was prepared by briefly sonicating MWCNT-DMF/H2O dispersion immersed with BC, no addition of surfactant was required during the process. The conductivity of MWCNT/BC, as measured by a four-probe instrument, was up to 0.32 S[Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text]. Tetraamino cobalt (II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) catalyst was decorated onto the surface of pre-oxidized MWCNT/BC with covalent bonding. The resulting BC-based functional nanomaterial, CoPc decorated, MWCNT incorporated BC (CoPc@MWCNT/BC), is able to efficiently decolorize dye wastewater. The catalytic oxidation activity of CoPc was greatly improved with the incorporation of MWCNT.

Abstract:A unique three dimensional (3D) porous structured bacterial cellulose (BC) can act as a supporting material to deposit the nanofillers in order to create advanced BC-based functional nanomaterials for various technological applications. In this study, novel nanocomposites comprised of BC with exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) incorporated into the BC matrix were prepared using a simple particle impregnation strategy to enhance the thermal properties and electrical conductivity of the BC. The flake-shaped xGnP particles were well dispersed and formed a continuous network throughout the BC matrix. The temperature at 10% weight loss, thermal stability and residual ash content of the nanocomposites increased at higher xGnP loadings. The electrical conductivity of the composites increased with increasing xGnP loading (attaining values 0.75 S/cm with the addition of 2 wt.% of xGnP). The enhanced conductive and thermal properties of the BC-xGnP nanocomposites will broaden applications (biosensors, tissue engineering, etc.) of BC and xGnP.
Immobilization of gelatin on bacterial cellulose nanofibers surface via crosslinking technique

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose is considered to be a potential material for tissue engineering. However, the absence of enough activity restricts its practical application as tissue engineering scaffold. This paper describes the synthesis of a novel bacterial cellulose/gelatin composite via crosslinking by procyanidin (PA). The morphology of the bacterial cellulose/gelatin composite was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electronic microscope (TEM). The composites were further characterized by fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that the 0.25wt.% Gel solution was the appropriate concentration for the BC/Gel composite. Furthermore, the proliferation, infiltration and adhesion of NIH3T3 cells on the BC/Gel-025 composite were evaluated. The results showed that the composite had better bioactivity than pure bacterial cellulose, and the composite supported cell growth.
The Biosynthesis of Bacterial Cellulose Composites Accompanied by Spray Feeding of Biomasses

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a broadly utilized natural nanofiber produced by microbial fermentation, but its high-cost and low-yield production and limited function still hinder its application. Here, we used the spraying-assisted biosynthesis method to introduce biomass nanofibers along with the nutrient media to the fermenting BC. Biomass nanofibers could be cellulose, chitosan, and others. They entangled with BC nanofibers via intermolecular interactions, including hydrogen binding and electrostatic adsorption, to form uniform BC composites. The BC composites achieved an enhanced yield of ~140 wt% compared with pure BC and displayed similar excellent mechanical properties (Young's moduli = 0.9–1.4 MPa for wet films and =~6500 MPa for dried films). BC composites also had similar high crystallinity and thermal stability to pure BC. The functional groups of biomasses endowed BC composite additional functions such as antibacterial and dye-adsorption capabilities. Moreover, a high yield and functionalization could be realized simultaneously by feeding functional cellulose nanofibers. This method provides a facile way to produce BC composites with low cost, high yield, and multiple functions.

Abstract:Flexible conductive materials have greatly promoted the rapid development of intelligent and wearable textiles. This article reports the design of flexible polypyrrole/bacterial cellulose (PPy/BC) conductive nanocomposites by in situ chemical polymerization. Box-Behnken response surface methodology has been applied to optimize the process. The effects of the pyrrole amount, the molar ratio of HCl to pyrrole and polymerization time on conductivity were investigated. A flexible PPy/BC nanocomposite was obtained with an outstanding electrical conductivity as high as 7.34 S cm−1. Morphological, thermal stability and electrochemical properties of the nanocomposite were also studied. The flexible PPy/BC composite with a core-sheath structure exhibited higher thermal stability than pure cellulose, possessed a high areal capacitance of 1001.26 mF cm−2 at the discharge current density of 1 mA cm−2, but its cycling stability could be further improved. The findings of this research demonstrate that the response surface methodology is one of the most effective approaches for optimizing the conditions of synthesis. It also indicates that the PPy/BC composite is a promising material for applications in intelligent and wearable textiles.

Abstract:Abstract Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a microbiologically produced cellulose with high purity and excellent biocompatibility, allowing it to be used alone or in combination with other materials, including polymers and nanoparticles. This study was conducted to incorporate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into a BC matrix using simple and environmentally friendly methods in order to create a composite with superior industrial properties. The fabricated composites were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), while the thermal stability was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. The antimicrobial activity of the composites was determined by observing the formation of an inhibition zone during the incubation of Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (gram-negative). The SEM, EDX, and XRD analysis confirmed the presence of AgNPs. The composites also exhibit excellent thermal stability and significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli .

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant renewable natural polymer on earth, but it does not conduct electricity, which limits its application expansion. The existing methods of making cellulose conductive are combined with another conductive material or high-temperature/high-pressure carbonization of the cellulose itself, while in the traditional method of sulfuric acid hydrolysis to extract nanocellulose, it is usually believed that a too high temperature will destroy cellulose and lead to experimental failure. Now, based on a new research perspective, by controlling the continuous reaction process and isolating oxygen, we directly extracted intrinsically conductive cellulose nanofiber (CNF) from biomass, where the confined range molecular chains of CNF were converted to highly graphitized carbon at only 90 °C and atmospheric pressure, while large-scale twisted graphene films can be synthesized bottom-up from CNFene suspensions, called CNFene (cellulose nanofiber–graphene). The conductivity of the best CNFene can be as high as 1.099 S/cm, and the generality of this synthetic route has been verified from multiple biomass cellulose sources. By comparing the conventional high-pressure hydrothermal and high-temperature pyrolysis methods, this study avoided the dangerous high-pressure environment and saved 86.16% in energy. Abstract:We report the preparation of a novel cobalt tetraaminophthalocyanine (CoPc) decorated bacterial cellulose (BC) nanocomposite by covalently immobilization of CoPc onto surface of pre-oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofibers. The functionalization steps on the nanofibers were monitored by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FT-IR), and an X-ray photoelectron (XPS). The prepared CoPc decorated BC nanocomposite, CoPc@BC, was used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the decoloration of recalcitrant rhodamine B (RhB) dye wastewater. We found that CoPc@BC has high decoloration capacity for RhB dye wastewater. With H2O2 as oxidant, more than 90% of RhB dye molecules can be removed in 180min.
Fabrication and properties of conductive films based on bacterial cellulose and poly-N-isopropylacrylamide-modified graphene oxide

Abstract:A conductive film (PNIPAM-rGO/BC) was fabricated combining bacterial cellulose (BC) with poly-N-isopropylacrylamide-modified graphene oxide (PNIPAM-GO) through vacuum filtration and steam reduction techniques. The conductivity and performance of PNIPAM-GO composite and the resulting conductive film were studied. The key findings revealed that PNIPAM-GO composite exhibited a reversible temperature-sensitive behavior. Specifically, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) increased upon the introduction of graphene oxide (GO). Detailed analyses confirmed uniform dispersion of GO nanosheets within the BC matrix. The incorporation of 10.0 % PNIPAM-GO (containing 7.0 % GO) led to a remarkable 19.6 % increase in tensile strength and approximately 37.0 % enhancement in elongation at break for the conductive film (PNIPAM-rGO/BC) compared to BC. After steam reduction, the electrical conductivity of PNIPAM-rGO/BC exhibited significant improvement over BC. Furthermore, the conductive film demonstrated temperature-dependent conductivity, with a resistivity value approximately 5.2 ± 0.2 KΩ at 25 °C. As the test temperature above the LCST of PNIPAM-GO composite, the resistance decreased. These intriguing temperature-sensitive conductive properties position PNIPAM-rGO/BC as a promising material for smart switches.

Abstract:With the flourishing development of wireless communication, there is an urgent need for flexible and robust materials with excellent thermal conductivity (TC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance through simple and green preparation. In this work, we efficiently prepared bacterial-cellulose-reinforced graphite nanoplate (BC-GNP) composite films by the vacuum filtration of BC/GNP mixture dispersions. Compared with the pure GNP film with a loose and disordered structure, the BC-GNP composite showed a highly aligned and compact “brick-and-mortar” structure. Benefiting from the unique structure, the resultant BC-GNP with 20 wt % BC (20%BC) exhibited a high tensile strength of 47.3 ± 1.8 MPa and an electrical conductivity of 76.9 ± 3.3 S/cm. As expected, the 20%BC showed excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 36.4 dB and a specific EMI SE (SSE/t) value of 8860 ± 400 dB·cm2/g with a thickness of 38 ± 1 μm. The in-plane TC and anisotropy index could reach up to 80.2 ± 6.4 W/mK and 73 ± 3, respectively. The 20%BC also exhibited a satisfactory Joule heating performance of 139 °C at a voltage of 6 V. More importantly, the 20%BC possessed a biodegradable property, which would completely degrade after 5 days. Thus, this work provides a strategy to facilely prepare biodegradable, high-performance, and multifunctional materials for wearable devices.

Abstract:Conventional fabrication of bacterial cellulose (BC) involves treatment with hot NaOH aqueous solutions to remove bacteria (BA). Herein, we report a simpler and cheaper method for the preparation of BA/BC composite without alkalization, which keeps the BA in the nanofibrous BC network. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed naturally distributed BA in BC matrix with a tightly entangled structure. Such BA-embedded BA/BC composite exhibited improved mechanical strength and modulus over BC. When used as adsorbent, the BA/BC composite exhibited significantly higher adsorption capacities to Pb(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Cr(VI) compared to bare BC. The much higher adsorption capacities of BA/BC are due to the presence of functional groups in the BA, such as amide, which are known to be involved in coordination interaction. This breakthrough strategy not only made the fabrication process simpler and more cost-effective, but also produced a new BC-based adsorbent with improved adsorption capacity to heavy metals.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to realize the controlled construction and modulation of micro-/nanostructures of conductive composite materials (CCMs) in a facile way. Herein, interdigital electrodes are prepared by direct-ink-write printing co-blended inks made of ethyl cellulose and carbon nanotubes on cellulose paper. The cellulose nanofibers (CFs) are prepared by electrospinning cellulose acetate on to an aluminum foil, followed by deacetylation in NaOH/ethanol. All co-blended inks exhibit a typical non-Newtonian shear thinning behavior, enabling smooth extrusion and printing. The above electrodes and the conductive CF films with excellent thermal stability are assembled into a pressure sensor, which has a high sensitivity (0.0584 KPa−1) to detect the change in external loading pressure. The obtained porous CFs film is further endowed with conductivity by in situ polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy), which are uniformly distributed on the CFs surface as particles; a triboelectric nanogenerator is constructed by using the CF@PPy film as a tribo-positive friction layer to achieve efficient energy harvesting (output voltage = 29.78 V, output current = 2.12 μA). Therefore, the construction of CCMs with micro-/nanostructures based on cellulose derivatives have essential application prospects in emerging high-tech fields, such as green electronics for sensing and energy harvesting.

Abstract:Conductive cellulose composites have received much attention as emerging materials due to their unique properties, such as biodegradability and flexibility. However, the achievable levels of conductivity of these cellulose composites are generally low due to the intrinsically nonconductive properties of cellulose. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were applied for preparation of a carbon fibers/expanded graphite (CF/EG) dispersion which was coated on cellulose paper to prepare highly conductive cellulose composites. Such composite materials were characterized based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) observation, FT-IR, XPS, and XRD and by determining the zeta potential, particle size, contact angle, and rheological behavior. It was found that the addition of CNC resulted in a significant improvement in the stability of the CF/EG dispersion. These results were explained by the following facts: (1) CNC improved the surface charge of the CF and EG due to the presence of negatively charged groups on the CNC surface, and (2) CNC increased the wettability of the CF and EG due to large availability of hydroxyl groups from CNC. The as-prepared CF/EG/CNC dispersion was then applied by coating cellulose paper surfaces, and the obtained papers presented superior conductivity and high flexibility.

Abstract:This study demonstrates that green and renewable cellulose nanofiber can be applied in the production of electrode materials for energy-storage supercapacitors. We prepared cellulose nanofiber/graphene nanosheet/polyaniline (CGP) composite films through in-situ polymerization and vacuum filtration and studied the effect of aniline amounts on the electrochemical properties of CGP films. The composite films were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, XPS, Raman, SEM, and EDX, and the results show that their specific capacitance initially increased and then decreased as the amount of aniline increased. Among the films studied, the CGP1:15(1 : 15 is the mass ratio of GNS to aniline in the feedstock)films achieved a specific capacitance of 430.78 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g and a charge transfer resistance of 1.65 Ω. After 1000 charge-discharge cycles, 79.33% of the specific capacitance was maintained at 5 A/g.

Abstract:<p class="Para">Bacteria cellulose (BC) generated by <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Acetobacter xylinum</em> is made up of three-dimensional network of ribbon-shaped nanofibers and serves as a promising matrix for composite materials. Lately different types of nanoparticles have been adopted to modify BC via chemical reactions or physical adsorption, which usually require two steps or more and could not modify BC homogeneously. In this study we provide a one-step in situ biomineralization method during microbial fermentation to produce BC–silica nanocomposites with control over silica content. By statically culturing <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Acetobacter xylinum</em> in the medium containing various amounts of sodium silicate, the slightly acidic culture environment due to consumption of glucose during fermentation could transfer sodium silicate to amorphous silica deposition that is evenly distributed on BC. The BC–silica nanocomposites obtained by this method possess superior mechanical properties such as high tensile strength and Young's modulus, which are potential candidates for future biomedical applications. With the analysis of elemental abundance and chemical structures, we propose the synthetic mechanism of in situ production of BC–silica nanocomposites. Abstract:A facile “Green Synthesis” method was used to prepare silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers, using BC as both the reducing and protecting agents with different concentration of AgNO 3 (from 0.001 to 1 M) at 0.103 MPa pressure, 121 °C for 10 min without any other chemicals. The structures and properties of AgNPs/BC were characterized by UV–Visible spectral analysis, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, and inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The results showed that the AgNPs were spherical or nearly spherical with the face-centred cubic geometry and distributed uniformly in the three-dimensional network structure of BC with the size of about 40–60 nm. The silver content and release of silver ions were determined by ICP. With the increase of AgNO 3 concentration, the content of silver increased from 16 to 115 mg/100 cm 2 and the release of silver ions can be controlled by using different concentration of AgNO 3 . The antimicrobial activities of AgNPs/BC membranes against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were estimated by the AATCC Test Method 100-2004. According to these results, it is anticipated that the AgNPs/BC nanocomposites can be applied to the antimicrobial wound dressings and implant materials.

Abstract:Composites of chitosan chloride and bacterial cellulose were successfully prepared by in situ method. Composites of bacterial cellulose/chitosan and pristine bacterial cellulose were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and bacteriostatic test. The crystallization of bacterial cellulose was interfered and weakened by the chitosan chloride included in the growth media, resulting in lower crystallinity index and thermal stability. And interaction between two polymers is verified by the thermal gravimetric analysis. The ultrafine nanofibril network structure of bacterial cellulose was retained by the composites, while the diameters were larger and the aperture inside were smaller than those of pristine bacterial cellulose, as shown through scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope figures. The antimicrobial effects were enhanced by the increasing concentration of chitosan in composites. All the characteristics of the composites provide evidence for the miscibility of chitosan and cellulose. Their biocompatibility is proved through our published data. It is strongly indicated that bacterial cellulose–chitosan nanocomposites have great potential in tissue engineering or pharmaceutical applications in the near future.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been explored for use in a range of applications including tissue engineering and textiles. BC can be produced from waste streams, but sustainable approaches are needed for functionalisation. To this end, BslA, a B. subtilis biofilm protein was produced recombinantly with and without a cellulose binding module (CBM) and the cell free extract was used to treat BC either ex-situ, through drip coating or in-situ, by incorporating during fermentation. The results showed that ex-situ modified BC increased the hydrophobicity and water contact angle reached 120°. In-situ experiments led to a BC film morphological change and mechanical testing demonstrated that addition of BslA with CBM resulted in a stronger, more elastic material. This study presents a nature inspired approach to functionalise BC using a biofilm hydrophobin, and we demonstrate that recombinant proteins could be effective and sustainable molecules for functionalisation of BC materials.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC), a natural nanoporous matrix, was utilized as the template to in situ synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by chemical reduction. Effects of the microstructure of the BC template, produced by different fermentation carbon sources were investigated on the formation of AgNPs. A detailed characterization, e.g. SEM, XRD and nitrogen physisorption for pure BC, and EDX, UV-vis spectroscopy, TEM and inductively coupled plasma for the AgNPs impregnated BC composites (BC/AgNPs) were done, and the antimicrobial activity of every composite was evaluated by both zone of inhibition and log reduction methods. It was revealed that the particle size of AgNPs, and the silver content and antimicrobial activity of the BC/AgNPs composites varied depending on the different BC templates used, mainly due to the differences in the microstructure of the BC template, especially the crystallinity and porous properties. As far as we know, little studies have been done on this issue.
