Abstract:The cocrystal of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) with 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) (in a 1:1 mole ratio) was prepared by a solvent /non-solvent (acetonitrile/distilled water) method, and systematically characterized by several methods. The thermal decomposition kinetics of HNIWTNT cocrystal were investigated using dynamic Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and the apparent activation energy (Ea ) was calculated by Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Starink methods. The standard molar enthalpy of formation (fHm ) of HNIWTNT cocrystal was acquired by a DC08-1 Calvet microcalorimeter with the help of a rational thermochemical cycle and was 324.45 +/- 0.15kJmol(-1). A continuous C-p mode of Micro-DSC III was used to determine the specific heat capacity (C-p,C-m) of HNIWTNT cocrystal from T=(283.15-333.15)K, and the C-p,C-m was 673.62Jmol(-1)K(-1) at 298.15K.

Abstract:The influence of temperature and solvent on the phase behavior of a 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane-2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (HNIW center dot TNT) cocrystal system has been investigated. The ternary phase diagrams for HNIW and TNT in acetonitrile and ethyl acetate have been constructed at 25 and 35 degrees C, indicating that the cocrystal dissolves incongruently in acetonitrile and congruently in ethyl acetate. The results show that the solubility ratio of the two cocrystal components does not provide a reliable and accurate way to predict whether the phase behavior of the HNIW center dot TNT cocrystal is congruent or incongruent. The construction of the ternary phase diagram identified the thermodynamic stability regions for the cocrystal. The appearance of the phase diagram depends strongly on the choice of solvent, and the temperature has a weak effect on the phase diagram. By proper selection of the ratios, the HNIW center dot TNT cocrystal has been prepared by an isothermal slurry conversion crystallization method and systematically characterized.
Measurement and Correlation of Solubility of HNIW·TNT Co-Crystal in (Methanol/1,2-Dichloroethane + Ethyl Acetate) Solvent Mixtures from 283.15 to 318.15 K

Abstract:The solubility of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal was experimentally measured by a gravimetric method in (methanol + ethyl acetate) and (1,2-dichloroethane + ethyl acetate) solvent mixtures at the temperature range from 283.15 to 318.15 K under atmospheric pressure (p = 0.1 MPa). The measured results indicate that the solubilities of HNIW :INT co-crystal were significantly affected by the temperature and the mole fraction of methanol or 1,2-dichloroethane. Within the range of the molar fraction of methanol and 1,2-dichloroethane, the average solubilities of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal in the corresponding binary solvent mixtures decreased from (7.63 x 10(-2)) to (0.82 x 10(-2) , 7.66 x 10(-2)) to (1.75 x 10(-2)), respectively. The modified Apelblat equation, the CNIBS/R-K model, the Van't Hoff-jouyban-Acree model, and the Apelblat-jouyban-Agree model were successfully used to correlate the experimental solubility of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal, and the calculated solubility data are good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the calculated values of the molar enthalpy change (Delta H-sol degrees) and the Gibbs free energy change (Delta(sol)G degrees) indicated that the dissolution behavior of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal in the solvent mixtures is endothermic and not spontaneous. In this work, the experimental solubility and correlation equations, as well as the thermodynamic parameters of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal during the dissolution process were obtained, which would be useful for facilitating the industrial crystallization process of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal and further theoretical studies. Abstract:The solubility of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal was measured in acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, methanol, ethanol, m-xylene, chloroform, butanone, toluene, and 1,2-dichloroethane from 283.15 to 318.15 K under atmospheric pressure by using a gravimetric method. The results show that the solubility of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal increase with increasing temperature in nine pure solvents. Within the experimental temperature range, the average solubility of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal was recorded as the maximum data in acetonitrile (1253 x 10(2) ) and the minimum data in ethanol (020 x 10(-2)). The modified Apelblat equation, van't Hoff equation, Yaws model, and lambda h equation were used to correlate the solubility of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal in nine pure solvents, and the modified Apelblat equation and Yaws model showed satisfactory accordance with the experimental data. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters including the enthalpy change (Delta H-sol degrees), the entropy change (Delta S-sol degrees), and the Gibbs free energy change (Delta G(sol)degrees) were also calculated, indicating the dissolution behavior of HNIW center dot TNT co-crystal in nine pure solvents is an endothermic and non-spontaneous process. Abstract:The kinetic equation describing the thermal decomposition reaction of NNHT obtained by TG-DTG data, integral isoconversional non-linear method and integral method of treating TG-DTG curves is d alpha/dt = 10(12.86) (1 - alpha)(3/2)e(-1.5849x104/T). The specific heat capacity (C(p)) of NNHT was determined with the continuous C(p) mode of the microcalorimeter. The equation of C(p) (T) was obtained. The standard molar heat capacity of NNHT was 218.41 J mol(-1)K(-1) at 298.15 K. With the help of the onset temperature (T(c)) and maximum peak temperature (T(p)) from the non-isothermal DTG curves of NNHT at different heating rates (beta), the apparent activation energy (E(K) and E(O)), and the pre-exponential constant (A(K)) of the thermal decomposition reaction obtained by Kissinger's method and Ozawa's method, C(p) obtained by microcalorimetry, density (rho) and thermal conductivity (lambda), the decomposition heat (Q(d), taking half-explosion heat), Zhang-Hu-Xie-Li's formula, Smith's equation, Friedman's formula, Bruckman-Guillet's formula, and Wang-Du's formulas, the values (T(c0) and T(p0)) of T(c) and T(p) corresponding to beta -> 0, thermal explosion temperature (T(bc) and T(bp)), adiabatic time-to-explosion (t(Tlad)), 50% drop height (H(50)) of impact sensitivity, critical temperature of hot-spot initiation (T(cr)), thermal sensitivity probability density function [S(T)] versus temperature (T) relation curves for spheroidic NNHT with radius of 1 m surrounded with ambient temperature of 300 K, peak temperature corresponding to the maximum value of S(T) versus T relation curve (T(S(T)max)), safety degree (SD), and critical ambient temperature(T(acr)) of thermal explosion of NNHT are calculated. The following results of evaluating the thermal safety of NNHT are obtained: T(SADT) = T(e0) = 453.34 K, T(SADT) = T(p0) = 454.86 K, T(be) = 462.68 K, T(bp) = 467.22 K, t(Tlad) = 1.03 s, H(50) = 17.69 cm, T(alpha) = 461.4 K. SD = 72.74 %, P(TE) = 27.26 %, and T(acr) = 321.96 K.
Standard Enthalpy of Formation, Thermal Behavior, and Specific Heat Capacity of 2HNIW·HMX Co-crystals

Abstract:2HNIW·HMX co-crystals are crystals composed of HNIW (2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexazisowurtzitane) and HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane), and the HNIW molecule and HMX molecule are combined with noncovalent bonds in a lattice at a 2:1 ratio. The 2HNIW·HMX co-crystals are successfully synthesized by Bolton’s method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, laser Raman spectrometer, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and high performance liquid chromatograph. The standard enthalpy of formation of 2HNIW·HMX co-crystals is obtained as 861.9 ± 18.6 kJ·mol–1 under the direction of a designed thermochemical cycle with a Calvet microcalorimeter. The thermal decomposition behavior of 2HNIW·HMX co-crystals was studied under the non-isothermal condition with DSC. Abstract:In order to understand the thermal behavior of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW), HNIW was studied by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS), thermogravimetry-fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), mass spectrometry (MS) with heating program at the same thermal decomposition conditions. Thermal decomposition kinetic of HNIW was analyzed. The results show that the main gaseous products from the thermal decomposition of HNIW are NO, N2O, NO2, CO2, C2N2H2 detected by TG-MS. The main gaseous products of HNIW are CO2, NO, N2O, NO2, HCN, HCNO, HCOOH, H2O by TG-FTIR. Through the mass spectrometry with heating program experiments, the main products from the decomposition are m/z 197 (C5H5N6O3),213 (C5H5N6O4),224 (C6H6N7O3),270 (C6H6N8O5), their activation energy Ea are 106.7, 100.2, 99.8, 110.8 kJ/mol, respectively.

Abstract:2,4,6,8,10,12-Hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexazisowurtzitane (HNIW)·1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) co-crystal in a 2:1 molar ratio was prepared by a solvent/non-solvent method, and the co-crystal has been characterized by several methods. The enthalpies of dissolution of 2HNIW·HMX co-crystal in N,N -dimethylformamide at different temperatures were measured by a DC08-1 Calvet microcalorimeter under standard atmospheric pressure, and it is indicated that the dissolutions are exothermic process. The empirical formulae for the calculation of the molar enthalpy ( Δ_diss H ) of dissolution, relative partial molar enthalpy ( Δ_diss H_partial ), relative apparent molar enthalpy ( Δ_diss H_apparent ), and enthalpy of dilution ( Δ_dil H_1,2 ) at 298.15 K are obtained. The differential enthalpies ( Δ_dif H ) and kinetic equations describing the dissolution process at different temperatures are deduced. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy E = 10.54 ± 0.22 kJ mol -1 and pre-exponential constant A = 0.34 ± 0.03 s −1 of 2HNIW·HMX co-crystal are obtained. The standard molar Gibbs free energy of activation ( Δ G_^θ ) at different temperatures is 86.44 ± 0.02 kJ mol −1 (298.15 K), 88.02 ± 0.03 kJ mol −1 (303.15 K), 89.61 ± 0.01 kJ mol −1 (308.15 K), 91.18 ± 0.01 kJ mol −1 (313.15 K), and 92.75 ± 0.02 kJ mol −1 (318.15 K), respectively. The standard molar entropy of activation ( Δ S_^θ ) and standard molar enthalpy of activation ( Δ H_^θ ) are − 262.55 ± 0.72 J mol −1 K −1 and 7.98 ± 0.22 kJ mol −1 , respectively.

Abstract:The influence of temperature and solvent on the solid-liquid ternary phase diagrams of the 2HNIW center dot HMX cocrystal has been investigated. Ternary phase diagrams were constructed for the 2HNIW center dot HMX cocrystal in acetonitrile and ethyl acetate at 15 degrees C and 25 degrees C. HMX and HNIW showed inconsistent dissolution behavior and congruent dissolution behavior in acetonitrile and ethyl acetate, respectively. In the HMX-HNIW-acetonitrile system, the 2HNIW center dot HMX cocrystal has a narrow thermodynamically stable region at both temperatures. The cocrystal exhibits a wider thermodynamically stable region in the HMX-HNIW-ethyl acetate system. The results show that the choice of solvent has a crucial influence on the dissolution behavior of the cocrystal and the size and position of each region in the phase diagram, while the temperature has no apparent effect on the overall appearance of the phase diagram. By properly selecting the ratios, the 2HNIW center dot HMX cocrystal could be prepared by the isothermal slurry conversion crystallization method.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition of epsilon-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) was studied by thermogravimetrydifferential scanning calorimetry-mass spectrometry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-DSC-MS-FTIR) simultaneous analysis. It has been shown that there is a crystal transition point for epsilon-HNIW, and only a single decomposition process has been observed for HNIW. The kinetic parameters of thermal decomposition of HNIW were obtained by Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods, indicating that HNIW has the higher reactivity compared to the other nitramines. The HNIW decomposition mechanism demonstrated by the non-isothermal kinetics conformed to Avrami-Erofeev equation with the factor of nucleus growth of n=1/3 and the conversion degree of alpha from 0.1 to 0.7. The MS and FTIR analyses indicated that the thermal decomposition of HNIW favors N-N bond cleavage over C-N bond cleavage as the rate determining step.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition of two kinds of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane(HNIW)particles(230 μm,40 μm)were studied by TG-MS.The isothermal decomposition residues of HNIW with larger particle(230 μm)were researched by FTIR spectra and elemental analysis.The results in the non-isothermal decomposition show that there are two steps for HNIW with larger particle and only one step for HNIW with small particle,the main products are NO,N2O,CO2,a small amount of NO2 and C2N2H2.Isothermal decomposition products of HNIW with large particle at 204 ℃ are same as in the first step of the non-isothermal decomposition.The average molecular formulas of the residues at 204 ℃ for 10 minutes and 60 minutes are C3H4.5N5.5O,C2H4N2O.The total of isothermal decomposition reaction at 204 ℃ is C6H6N12O12=6NO+N2O+2CO2+2HCN+C2H4N2O.
Thermal Decomposition of Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane and Its Residues

Abstract:Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) particles were heated isothermally at (204.0 +/- 0.5), (208.0 +/- 0.5), (212.0 +/- 0.5), and (216.0 +/- 0.5) degrees C for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 min under (2.0 +/- 0.1) MPa pressure in an argon atmosphere. Residues obtained at (208.0 0.5) degrees C were studied by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (F-FIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-DSC-MS) and thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR) spectroscopy. Results showed that after isothermal decomposition of HNIW crystals at about 210.0 degrees C for 60 min residues were formed with an average molecular formula of C2H2N2O. Unreacted HNIW is present in the residue and is more thermally unstable than the original HNIW. We confirmed that HNIW crystals decomposed stepwise under isothermal conditions. Three stages were found to exist during the thermal decomposition of HNIW residues. The first decomposition stage consists of an initial decomposition of unreacted HNIW, the second stage comprises an elimination reaction of five-membered ring amides and nitrogen heterocyclic compounds and in the third stage five-membered ring amides are degraded and secondary reactions involving NO2 occur. The main gaseous products in every stage are discussed.
Ab Initio Neural Network MD Simulation of Thermal Decomposition of a High Energy Material CL-20/TNT.

Abstract:CL-20 (2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane, also known as HNIW) is one of the most powerful energetic materials. However, its high sensitivity to environmental stimuli greatly reduces its safety and severely limits its application. In this work, ab initio based neural network potential (NNP) energy surfaces for both β-CL-20 and CL-20/TNT co-crystals were constructed. To accurately simulate the thermal decomposition processes of these two crystal systems, reactive molecular dynamics simulations based on the NNPs were performed. Many important intermediate species and their associated reaction paths during the decomposition had been identified in the simulations and the direct results on detonation temperatures of both systems were provided. The simulations also showed clearly that 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) molecules in the co-crystal act as a buffer to slow down the chain reactions triggered by nitrogen dioxide and this effect is more significant at lower temperatures. Specifically, the addition of TNT molecules in the CL-20/TNT co-crystal introduces intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CL-20 and TNT molecules in the system, thereby increasing the thermal stability of the co-crystal. The current reactive molecular dynamics simulation is performed based on the NNP which helps in accelerating the speed of ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation by more than 3 orders of magnitude while preserving the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This enabled us to perform longer-time simulations at more realistic temperatures that traditional AIMD methods cannot achieve. With the advantage of the NNP in its powerful fitting ability and transferability, the NNP-based MD simulation can be widely applied to energetic material systems.

Abstract:The non-isothermal decomposition of NiC2O4 . 2H(2)O was investigated under a dynamic inert atmosphere using a temperature-programmed X-ray diffractometer (TP-XRD) and a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled to a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (TGA-FTIR). Both solid and gaseous products were analyzed in situ. The XRD pattern of the dehydration product did not match data for NiC2O4 reported in the JCPDS file. The thermal decomposition of the dehydration product (NiC2O4) took place in two sub-steps, both of which involved CO2 evolution. Metallic nickel was the final product.

Abstract:The thermal behavior and decomposition reaction kinetics of 2-nitroimino-5-nitro-hexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (NNHT) were investigated by TG-DTG and DSC under atmospheric pressure and flowing nitrogen gas conditions. The results show that the thermal decomposition process of NNHT has two mass loss stages. The exothermic decomposition reaction mechanism obeys chemical reaction rule. The kinetic parameters of the reaction are E(a)=131.77 kJ mol(-1), lg(A/s(-1))=12.56, respectively. The kinetic equation can be expressed as: dalpha/dt = 10(12.86)(1-alpha)(3/2)3(-1.5849 x 10(4)/T)). The critical temperature of thermal explosion of NNHT obtained from the peak temperature (T(p)) is T(bp)=467.22K. The entropy of activation (DeltaS( not equal)), enthalpy of activation (DeltaH( not equal)), and free energy of activation (DeltaG( not equal)) of the reaction are -7.978 J mol(-1)K(-1), 127.99 kJ mol(-1) and 131.62 kJ mol(-1), respectively.

Abstract:The epsilon ->gamma phase transition of HNIW induced by heat was investigated with in situ X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD). The effects of purity, particle size, insensitive additives and the time of isothermal heat treatment on the phase transition were evaluated. It was found that the phase transition is irreversible with changes in temperature, and the two phases can coexist in a certain temperature range. Moreover, the initial phase transition temperature increases with increasing purity and decreasing particle size of HNIW, and thus with the approximate crystal density. The addition of graphite and paraffin wax to HNIW as insensitive additives leads to a decrease in the initial phase transition temperature, but the addition of TATB does not affect the initial phase transition temperature. Thus, TATB is a suitable insensitive additive. Moreover, at the critical temperature, the isothermal time determined the efficiency of the epsilon- to gamma-phase transition. This work lays the foundations for the choice of molding technologies, performance test methods, ammunition storage options, as well as the manufacture of HNIW-based explosive formulations.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) was studied by In-situ FTIR spectroscopy. The spectra of condensed-phase reactant and its decomposition products were recorded from room temperature to 450 ℃. The Absorption bands of the condensed-phase decomposition products were assigned. The results of the subtraction FTIR spectra show that a nitro group on six-membered ring homolyzes in the range of the crystal transformation temparature 110 ℃ to 150 ℃. This homolysis causes a series of cleavage reactions to form compounds contained α,β-unsaturated aldehyde and α,β-unsaturated nitroso-group. Above 155 ℃, a nitro group on five-membered ring begins to homolyze and form five-membered ring lactam. Above 165 ℃, more cleavage reactions and self-oxidations occur. Above 190 ℃,oxidation reactions between product molecules dominantly happens (besides) self-oxidations. A lot of decomposition products are formed,such as dioxoimidazole,dioxopiperazine,acid anhydride,cyanuric acid,ammonium,four,five and six-membered ring lactam etc. Carbodiimide appeared in residues at temperatures higher than 300 ℃ is attributed to the decomposition of amine compounds. Above 400 ℃,chief components in the residue are melem and its polymers such as melon etc.

Abstract:The heat-induced phase transitions of ε-HNIW, both neat and coated with various additives used in plastic bonded explosives, were investigated using powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that ε-HNIW, after being held at 70°C for 60h, remained in the ε-phase. Applying other conditions, various phase transition parameters were determined, including Tc (the critical phase transition temperature), T50 (the temperature at which 50% of the phase transition is complete) and T180 (the percentage of γ-HNIW present in samples heated to 180°C). According to the above three parameters, additives were divided into three categories: those that delay phase transition, those that raise the critical temperature and the transition rate, and those that promote the phase transition. Based on the above data, a phase transition mechanism is proposed.
