Abstract:In this work, a series of N-doped carbon supported WO3 composite catalysts were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal and subsequent calcination method. The obtained WO3/N-doped carbon composites outperformed the bare WO3 and bare N-doped carbon for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under mild and green reaction conditions (no base additives, water as solvent, and H2O2 as oxidant). It was found that the superior catalytic performance could be ascribed to the synergistic effect and strong interaction between WO3 and N-doped carbon among the composites. N-doped carbon impeded the aggregation of WO3 nanoparticles, and the graphitic and pyrrolic N species of N-doped carbon might provide main active sites for the immobilization of WO3 nanoparticles. Under the optimum reaction conditions, the yield of benzaldehyde was achieved as 94.6% within 4 h. The recycling test indicated that the catalyst could be reused for seven times without obvious activity loss. Besides, a possible reaction mechanism for this transformation was proposed. This work might give some insights into the design of heterogeneous composite catalysts for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under mild conditions.

Abstract:Transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon materials (M-N-C) have attracted great attention in the field of catalysis due to their high atomic utilization and outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a series of Co and N-doped carbon catalysts (Co-N-C@mSiO2-x) were successfully prepared by pyrolysis of cobalt porphyrin in situ synthesized in the cavity of mesoporous hollow silica spheres according to a method of ship-in-bottle. The optimal catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance for the selective oxidation of ethylbenzene, with 95.5% conversion for ethylbenzene and 98.9% selectivity toward acetophenone. In combination with characterization techniques, acid treatment experiments and KSCN poisoning tests, the successful synthesis of cobalt-porphyrins in hollow silica spheres was demonstrated, and the excellent performance of Co-N-C@mSiO2-0.10 was attributed to the more acid-resistant Co-Nx species as the main metal active center. In addition, the N-containing groups could significantly facilitate the conversion of ethylbenzene. This work is expected to provide a straightforward and green approach to design metal and N co-doped carbon materials.

Abstract:The creation of specific catalytic functionalities in the nanocarbon materials is an important approach to develop the metal-free nanocarbon materials (carbocatalysts). We report herein a functionalization strategy by treatment of N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) with ozone/water to create oxygen groups nearby the N groups (N-C=O). These groups, different from those present in conventionally oxidized NCNT, show peculiar catalytic behavior. The N atom adjacent to carbonyl group (N-C=O) modifies the reactivity of carbonyl towards C-H activation and simultaneously activate O-2 molecule for bifunctionality. Efficient performance for oxidative coupling of benzylamine to imine (>99% imine selectivity) can be obtained under solvent-free conditions at ambient pressure. The benzylamine productivity reaches as high as 131.3 mmol m(-2) h(-1), which is the highest among any other reported carbon-based catalysts. This work not only highlights a sustainable strategy for tuned surface chemistry of carbon materials by using mild ozonation process, but also reports a novel green aerobic synthesis method of benzylamine using tailored metal-free carbon nanomaterials. Abstract:Selective oxidation of aromatic alkanes into high value-added products through benzylic C—H bond activation is one of the main reactions in chemical industry. On account of the constantly increasing demand for mass production, efficient, eco-friendly and sustainable catalysts are urgently needed. Herein, we describe a facile and versatile emulsion-assisted interface self-assembly strategy towards molecular-level fabrication of co-doped mesoporous carbon nanospheres with controllable active N and S species. The method enables a high degree of control over nanoparticle sizes, mesoporous nanostructures, contents of heteroatoms and the chemical composition. The optimized catalyst exhibits high catalytic performance of 97% ethylbenzene conversion and 98% selectivity to acetophenone. Density functional theory simulations reveal that N, S-co-doping leads to the redistribution of charge and spin densities, introducing more active carbon atoms and realizing aerobic oxidation of ethylbenzene efficiently. This work presents a general strategy for molecular-level design of carbon-based catalysts, and also provides new insight into the influence of heteroatom-doping on catalytic properties.

Abstract:A nanocasting method to fabricate nitrogen-doped dual mesoporous carbon is proposed by the carbonization of nitrile functional ionic liquid (FIL) grafted SBA-15 for the first time. These carbon materials have high nitrogen content (12.8%), large specific surface areas (763 m(2) g(-1)) and uniform rod morphologies, which are derived from FILs grafted on the surface of SBA-15. Furthermore, by adjusting the impregnation amount of ionic liquids on SBA-15, pore structures of these carbon materials can be adjusted from single to dual mesopores. The developed dual mesoporous carbon materials exhibit good catalytic performance in the selective oxidation of ethylbenzene, ascribed to the promoting effects of nitrogen-doping, high surface area and dual mesostructure. It may be concluded that the dual mesostructure has an advantage over a single mesostructure to obtain a fast mass transport rate, resulting in higher acetophenone yield.

Abstract:In this study, a facile atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is used for the synthesis of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped hollow carbon sphere (NSC). Nano-CaCO3 is used as template for the formation of hollow and highly hierarchical porous carbon structure. The doped percentages of N and S can be easily regulated by changing the ratio of N and S precursors and the deposition temperature. The obtained NSC is highly active for the catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidant, and the reaction rate constant is 4.5 and 32.7 times faster than the single N or S doped samples, respectively. The PMS activation mechanism is comprehensively investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical quenching tests. Superoxide intermediate (O2•−) and singlet oxygen (1O2) play the dominant role for phenol degradation. Moreover, with the introduction of secondary doped S atoms, more O2•− are generated for organics degradation. The excellent catalytic activity of NSC should be resulted from the optimized N and S doping percentages and large specific surface area (SSA). The synthesis strategy in this study provides a facile and low-cost synthetic method for heteroatom doped carbon materials and would expand the application of metal-free materials in the environmental remediation field.

Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.
Cobalt single atom site catalysts with ultrahigh metal loading for enhanced aerobic oxidation of ethylbenzene

Abstract:The oxidation of hydrocarbons to produce high value-added compounds (ketones or alcohols) using oxygen in air as the only oxidant is an efficient synthetic strategy from both environmental and economic views. Herein, we successfully synthesized cobalt single atom site catalysts (Co SACs) with high metal loading of 23.58 wt.% supported on carbon nitride (CN), which showed excellent catalytic properties for oxidation of ethylbenzene in air. Moreover, Co SACs show a much higher turn-over frequency (19.6 h−1) than other reported non-noble catalysts under the same condition. Comparatively, the as-obtained nanosized or homogenous Co catalysts are inert to this reaction. Co SACs also exhibit high selectivity (97%) and stability (unchanged after five runs) in this reaction. DFT calculations reveal that Co SACs show a low energy barrier in the first elementary step and a high resistance to water, which result in the robust catalytic performance for this reaction.

Abstract:Aerobic oxidation of hydrocarbons yielding corresponding oxygenated products is one of the most important chemical processes. In current work, carbon nanotubes supported encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles with carbon layers (Co@C/CNTs) were synthesized and utilized as catalysts in the oxidation of ethylbenzene (EB) in the liquid phase, exhibiting high catalytic performance. The synergistic effect between Co@C and CNTs played the vital role on facilitating the decomposition of peroxides to enhance the overall activity. The inadequate covered Co@C on CNTs surface were considered as catalytic sites. Density functional theory revealed that the exist of Co nanoparticles could improve the interaction between the catalyst and intermediate free radicals, which were significant for EB oxidation. Last but not least, the electron transfer on carbon surface was enhanced by the incorporation of Co@C nanoparticles, which greatly improved the catalytic performance on EB oxidation. This study provides a new insight into the Co‐based catalysts in the aerobic oxidation of hydrocarbons. CNTs supported Co@C (Co@C/CNTs) was synthesized and used as the catalyst in the solvent‐free aerobic oxidation of ethylbenzene in the liquid phase. The electron transfer on carbon nanotube surface was enhanced by the incorporation of Co@C nanoparticles, which greatly improved the catalytic activity of ethylbenzene oxidation. The relation between work function and specific activity over Co@C/CNTs catalyst for ethylbenzene oxidation was quantitatively established.

Abstract:In this work, self-nitrogen-doped carbon microsphere photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal and carbonation pyrolysis with first application in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Coupled with relevant characterization, nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres were successfully prepared and the introduction of nitrogen significantly improved the photogenerated charge separation efficiency and CO 2 photoreduction to CO activity, leading to the highest photocatalytic reduction activity with a CO yield of 185.71 μmol g −1 (9 h) under simulated sunlight irradiation. More importantly, its performance remains at about 98 % after ten consecutive cycle tests, indicating the excellent active stability of self-nitrogen-doped carbon spheres. Possible mechanisms for photocatalytic reduction and the role of nitrogen in photocatalytic adsorption and reduction processes are analyzed and proposed. The research provides novel strategies for the design of bifunctional catalysts that offer robust adsorption and efficient reduction, enabling the sustainable conversion of CO 2 .

Abstract:A ZIF-derived carbon framework offered abundant platforms for the rational design and construction of high-performance nonprecious-metal catalysts. In this study, a Co-coordinated ZIF-derived carbon framework was synthesized by substituting Co for Zn in ZIF-8, followed by pyrolysis. The resultant Co–Zn@C–N, wrapped by carbon nanotubes (CNTs), exhibited superior catalytic performance in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BnOH), achieving an optimal BnOH conversion of 92% and a benzaldehyde (BzH) selectivity of 92% at room temperature. Characterization results confirmed that the reaction proceeded through a free-radical mechanism, and the CNTs, formed through catalytic graphitization induced by Co nanoparticles, provided solid–liquid reaction interfaces and enhanced the electron transfer between radicals and skeletons. The Co and Zn species, acting as the primary active sites, exhibited a synergistic effect that enabled the good performance of the Co–Zn@N–C catalyst. Moreover, the elevated graphitic degree, substantial content of Co 0 and graphitic N collectively contributed to the enhanced catalytic performance. Additionally, the catalyst had excellent reusability and stability, manifesting negligible variations in activity across four consecutive experimental cycles. This Co–Zn@N–C catalyst system provides a promising foundation towards the design of highly active non-noble catalysts for organics oxidation reactions under mild conditions.

Abstract:Zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have recently emerged as an ideal type of carbon precursors with abundant tailorability. In this work, a series of ZIF‐derived porous carbon catalysts have been prepared with encapsulation of bimetallic oxide nanoparticles via simple thermal treatment. The composition and structure of these catalysts were confirmed in detail by different characterization methods. The bimetallic oxide (Mn/Co, Fe/Co, and Cu/Co) nanoparticles were encapsulated in the nitrogen‐doped graphitized carbon matrix. Moreover, the hierarchically porous structure and carbon defects were successfully constructed in the carbon catalysts. Additionally, in the selective oxidation of saturated C–H bonds in alkyl arenes, the carbon catalysts demonstrate outstanding performance for the oxidation of C–H bonds to corresponding carboxyl groups. This was due to their unique structure can greatly promote mass transfer and molecular oxygen activation, resulting in high conversion and high selectivity. Remarkably, this work here could also provide a novel strategy to the controllable synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)‐derived carbon catalysts for enhanced performance in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed Fe species embedded in the nitrogen-containing carbon supports (Fe1/NC) are successfully synthesized using a ball milling approach, with commercial protein powder as the nitrogen source. The catalyst exhibits outstanding performance in the oxidation of aromatic compounds containing saturated C-H bonds into corresponding ketones under ambient conditions, which is superior to those of a nanoparticle catalyst (Fen/NC) and a metal-free catalyst (NC).

Abstract:Enhancing the exposure of metal active sites and maximizing metal atom utilization are critical challenges in heterogeneous catalysis. To solve these issues, heterogeneous catalysts are usually activated by chemicals. Herein, potassium chloride (KCl) was used as an activator to prepare cobalt–nitrogen co-doped (Co–N x ) hollow periodic mesoporous organosilica spheres (Co–N x /HPMOs-KCl). Co–N x /HPMOs-KCl showed outstanding catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone, with a conversion of up to 94.0% for ethylbenzene and a high selectivity of 98.4% towards acetophenone. Additionally, Co–N x /HPMOs-KCl maintained excellent catalytic performance for the oxidation of ethylbenzene after six cycles. The excellent performance of Co–N x /HPMOs-KCl was attributed to the activation of KCl, which increased the specific surface area of the catalyst and thus facilitated the exposure of more metal active sites. After the removal of unstable metal species through further acid treatment, the remaining metal active sites were thus fully exposed and stably embedded in the framework of the hollow periodic mesoporous organosilica spheres (HMPOs). This work presents an efficient catalyst and offers new insights for the improvement of heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Development of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials is important for the rapid upgrade of chemicals, which remains a challenge. Here, the benzene oxidation reaction was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the atomic interface strategy to improve catalytic performance. The developed B,N-cocoordinated Cu single atoms anchored on carbon nanosheets (Cu1/B-N) with the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface was prepared by the pyrolysis of a precoordinated Cu precursor. Benefiting from the unique atomic Cu-N2B1 interfacial structure, the designed Cu1/B-N exhibited considerable activity in the oxidation of benzene, which was much higher than Cu1/N-C, Cu NPs/N-C, and N-C catalysts. A theoretical study showed that the enhanced catalytic performance resulted from the optimized adsorption of intermediates, which originated from the manipulation of the electronic structure of Cu single atoms induced by B atom coordination in the Cu-N2B1 atomic interface. This study provides an innovative approach for the rational design of high-performance heterogeneous catalytic materials at the atomic level.

Abstract:Designing transition-metal oxides for catalytically removing the highly toxic benzene holds significance in addressing indoor/outdoor environmental pollution issues. Herein, we successfully synthesized ultrathin LayCoOx nanosheets (thickness of ∼1.8 nm) with high porosity, using a straightforward coprecipitation method. Comprehensive characterization techniques were employed to analyze the synthesized LayCoOx catalysts, revealing their low crystallinity, high surface area, and abundant porosity. Catalytic benzene oxidation tests demonstrated that the La0.029CoOx-300 nanosheet exhibited the most optimal performance. This catalyst enabled complete benzene degradation at a relatively low temperature of 220 °C, even under a high space velocity (SV) of 20,000 h-1, and displayed remarkable durability throughout various catalytic assessments, including SV variations, exposure to water vapor, recycling, and long time-on-stream tests. Characterization analyses confirmed the enhanced interactions between Co and doped La, the presence of abundant adsorbed oxygen, and the extensive exposure of Co3+ species in La0.029CoOx-300 nanosheets. Theoretical calculations further revealed that La doping was beneficial for the formation of oxygen vacancies and the adsorption of more hydroxyl groups. These features strongly promoted the adsorption and activation of oxygen, thereby accelerating the benzene oxidation processes. This work underscores the advantages of doping rare-earth elements into transition-metal oxides as a cost-effective yet efficient strategy for purifying industrial exhausts.
Preassembly Strategy To Fabricate Porous Hollow Carbonitride Spheres Inlaid with Single Cu-N3 Sites for Selective Oxidation of Benzene to Phenol

Abstract:Developing single-atom catalysts with porous micro-/nanostructures for high active-site accessibility is of great significance but still remains a challenge. Herein, we for the first time report a novel template-free preassembly strategy to fabricate porous hollow graphitic carbonitride spheres with single Cu atoms mounted via thermal polymerization of supramolecular preassemblies composed of a melamine-Cu complex and cyanuric acid. Atomically dispersed Cu-N3 moieties were unambiguously confirmed by spherical aberration correction electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. More importantly, this material exhibits outstanding catalytic performance for selective oxidation of benzene to phenol at room temperature, especially showing phenol selectivity (90.6 vs 64.2%) and stability much higher than those of the supported Cu nanoparticles alone, originating from the isolated unique Cu-N3 sites in the porous hollow structure. An 86% conversion of benzene, with an unexpectedly high phenol selectivity of 96.7% at 60 °C for 12 h, has been achieved, suggesting a great potential for practical applications. This work paves a new way to fabricate a variety of single-atom catalysts with diverse graphitic carbonitride architectures.

Abstract:Through screening Ce precursors and pyrolysis temperatures [Ce(acac) 3 as Ce precursors and pyrolysis at 900 °C], zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8) derived nitrogen-doped carbon supported cerium single atom catalyst(Ce 1 /NC) is successfully prepared by ball milling method. The Ce 1 /NC catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance in the selective oxidation of saturated C-H bonds in aromatic compounds, e.g. , 91% conversion and 99% selelctivity can be achieved in the oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone under mild reaction conditions.
