Abstract:Cylindrical diblock copolymer/anisotropic nanorod composites under equilibrium and nonquilibrium conditions, have been modeled and simulated using dissipative particle dynamics. The aim of our present study is to understand how the anisotropic NRs affect the equilibrium self-assembled structure of diblock copolymers (DBCPs) melts and how the shear flow induces the dynamic behaviors of DBCPs/NRs composites, especially the orientation and distribution of NRs in diblock matrix. We consider two different shear directions categorized with respect to the flow velocity parallel or perpendicular to the orientation of initial structures, which are defined as z-axis shear flow and x-axis shear flow, respectively. Our results show the shear flow not only aligns the orientation of DBCPs template and the dispersed NRs toward the flow direction, but also regulates the orientational and positional order of NRs. The final self-assembly behaviors of DBCPs/NRs nanocomposites is determined by the interplay between shear-induced polymer thinning and NRs dispersion. This work provides us a viable strategy for creating polymer nanocomposites with tunable and enhanced processing properties.

Abstract:The phase behaviours of diblock copolymers under cylindrical confinement are studied in two-dimensional space by using the self-consistent field theory. Several phase parameters are adjusted to investigate the cylindrical-confinement induced phase behaviours of diblock copolymers. A series of lamella-cylinder mixture phases, such as the mixture of broken-lamellae and cylinders and the mixture of square-lamellae and cylinders, are observed by varying the phase parameters, in which the behaviours of these mixture phases are discussed in the corresponding phase diagrams. Furthermore, the free energies of these mixture phases are investigated to illustrate their evolution processes. Our results are compared with the available observations from the experiments and simulations respectively, and they are in good agreement and provide an insight into the phase behaviours under cylindrical confinement

Abstract:The phase behaviors of lamellar diblock copolymers (DBCPs) melts and lamellar DBCPs/nanorods (NRs) composites subjected to oscillatory shear flow, have been investigated using dissipative particle dynamics. The oscillatory shear is a quite common shearing mode used in experiments and manufacturing processes. The rich lamellar (LAM) reorientation and morphological transition of systems strongly depend on the shear amplitude and shear frequency. At very low frequency, the amplitude-induced phase behaviors of DBCPs melts or DBCPs/NRs composites are quite similar to those subjected to a steady shear. For DBCPs/NRs case, we control NRs concentration low 15% to preserve LAM morphology in the nanocomposites, and simultaneously consider both types of selective and nonselective NRs. Our aim is to compare the different inductions on DBCPs melts or nanocomposites caused by shear amplitude and frequency, and observe how the NRs are oriented and dispersed in phase-separated copolymers matrix while under oscillatory shear, and how the presence of selective/nonselective NRs affects the shear-induced LAM reorientations and rheological properties of systems. Our results show the NRs orientation not only directly depend on the imposed shear flow but also is interfered by the alignment of shear-stretched copolymer molecules. Concentric lamella structures of symmetric diblock copolymers confined in cylindrical nanopores

Abstract:We applied a real-space self-consistent field theory to investigate the concentric lamella structures of symmetric diblock copolymers confined in the cylindrical nanopores with the preferential surfaces. The symmetric diblock copolymers are selected to locate in the very weak and strong segregation regions where the lamellae obviously exhibit the “soft” and “rigid” characteristics, respectively. For the soft lamellae, the cylindrical confinement induces the soft concentric lamella structure with the same thickness as the bulk lamellar period, except that the thickness of the innermost layer depends on the confinement degree. For the rigid lamellae, the cylindrical confinement not only induces the rigid concentric lamella structure having the linear dependence on the confinement degree, but also results in several novel morphologies, such as the connective concentric lamella and the broken concentric lamella structures. The results are quantitatively discussed in a wide range of confinement degree and can be reasonably understood based on symmetry breaking and structural frustration. In addition, our results are quantitatively compared to the available observations from the simulations and experiments, which are in good agreements and may be helpful to experimentally fabricate the ordered nanostructures on the large scale.
Microphase Transitions of Block Copolymer/nanorod Composites under Shear Flow

Abstract:The shear-induced reorientations and phase transitions of symmetric diblock copolymer/nanorod nanocomposites subjected to steady shear flow, are systematically investigated via dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation method. Both selective and nonselective nanorods (NRs) are considered, with low and high NRs concentrations. To preserve lamellar morphology in the nanocomposites, the NRs concentration is controlled below 15%. The final morphologies of nanocomposites depend on the interplay between NRs and diblock copolymers (DBCPs) under shear flow. The cooperatively induced microphase structures include lamellar (parallel, diagonal and perpendicular alignment), ribbon and cylindrical phases. The presence of anisotropic NRs not only delays or advances the shear-induced transition in lamellae orientation, but also induces the phase transitions by changing the effective composition of the copolymers (f(eff)) in nanocomposites. Meanwhile, the low viscosity in the perpendicular lamellae of DBCPs provides an energetic reason for the lamellae changing into perpendicular orientation, with the shear thinning. The shear thinning corresponds to the reorientation of the lamellae, while the shear thickening corresponds to the phase transition from lamellar to ribbon, and to cylindrical structure.

Abstract:The self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under cylindrical confinements is investigated in two-dimensional space using the real-space self-consistent field theory. The effects of confinement degrees and preferential strengths on the triblock copolymer phase behaviors with special polymer parameters are first considered. On one hand, different confinement degrees cause different phase behaviors in nanopores with the neutral surfaces. Moreover, the strongly preferential surface fields can surpass the confinement degrees and volume fractions in determing the confined phase behaviors. On the other hand, in contrast, confined morphologies are more sensitive to the variations in the A-preferential surface field strength. Subsequently, the incompatibility degrees between different blocks are systematically varied under cylindrical nanopore confinements. Under cylindrical nanopore confinements, the morphologies are very sensitive to the variations in the incompatibility degrees. Meanwhile, nanopore confinements can affect order-disorder and order-order transition points in the bulk. The corresponding free, internal, and entropic energies as well as the order parameters are also quantificationally examined to deeply investigate the confined phase mechanisms, and a number of morphological transitions are confirmed to be of first-order. These findings may guide the design of novel nanostructures based on triblock copolymers by introducing confinements.

Abstract:We have used real-space self-consistent field theory to search possible morphology of an asymmetric AB diblock copolymer thin film confined between two homogeneous hard walls. The volume fraction of the A block is fixed to be f=0.3, as expected, a cylindrical phase is stable without confinement (in the bulk). Our simulation reveals that under confinement, in addition to parallel and perpendicular cylinders, other phases, such as flat lamellae, perforated lamellae, undulated cylinders and undulated lamellae, are also stable due to the block–substrate interactions. Three new structures, i.e. undulated lamellae, undulated cylinders and parallel cylinders with non-integer period, are observed to be stable with suitable film thickness and block–substrate interaction. By systematically varying the film thickness and the interaction parameters between the two blocks, phase diagrams are constructed for typical block–substrate interactions. We compare the phase diagrams for weak and strong substrate preference and discuss the effects of confinement and substrate preference on the stability of various structures.

Abstract:The morphology changes of linear diblock copolymer lamellar microdomains under uniform simple shear are studied via the dissipative particle dynamics technique. The parallel and perpendicular reorientations of the lamellae are observed in the simulations, and two different reorientation mechanisms, under small and large shear rates respectively, are proposed. The parallel-to-perpendicular transition is also observed and the kinetics is discussed. Sinusoidal and chevron instabilities due to the shear are found. After relaxation the peculiar "bidirectionally undulating" instability is obtained.

Abstract:Solvent evaporation has proven to be a remarkably successful tool for directing the self-assembled nanostructures of block copolymers, yet the mechanisms of how its control parameters affect the nanostructure and its principles governing the structural formation remain poorly understood. In this paper, the simulated annealing and Monte Carlo method are used to study the self-assembly of cylinder-forming diblock copolymer films confined between two flat walls and under solvent evaporation on a simple cubic lattice model. Specific attention is paid to the orientation control of cylinders in the films. For films confined between two identical homogeneous flat walls, the effects of surface preference, solvent selectivity and swelling ratio on the cylinder orientation are investigated. The surface preference window for the formation of perpendicular cylinders is wider with a solvent of stronger affinity for the majority block, especially when the swelling ratio is higher. Whereas a neutral solvent leads to the formation of perforated lamellae, making the surface preference window for the formation of perpendicular cylinders narrower. For films under solvent evaporation, the effects of surface preference and film thickness on the resulting morphology of films are also studied. The maximum surface preference that leads to the formation of perpendicular cylinders varies with film thickness cyclically. The surface preference window for the formation of perpendicular cylinders after solvent evaporation is wider than that after thermal annealing, indicating that perpendicular orientation is promoted by the solvent evaporation. To unravel the mechanism of perpendicular cylinders forming, film morphology at different stages during solvent evaporation is plotted and compared to those of the films swollen to the corresponding thicknesses. It is noted that cylinder orientation after solvent evaporation is the same as that in a swollen film with a swelling ratio at which the spheres in the film begin to merge into cylinders. The surface preference window for the formation of perpendicular cylinders in this swollen case is determined by the commensurability between the film thickness and the bulk period.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough a great deal of unique nanostructures were already obtained from polymer self-assemblies in terms of conventional parameters, the self-assembly under the confinement is still not well understood. Here, dissipative particle dynamics simulations were used to explore the self-assemble behaviors of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements. First several unusual morphologies, such as multilayer onion, coupled helix, and stacked lamella, were distinguished from the total 210 simulations. Second, the influences of three important parameters (block sequence, wall selectivity, and spherical radius) on the morphologies were discussed in detail. Finally, the dynamics evolution of several typical aggregates was examined. This simulation enriches micelle morphologies for the self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements and is helpful to understand the formation of valuable nanostructures from linear ABC terpolymers.

Abstract:The dissipative particle dynamics simulation technique is used to study the microphase transitions of perforated lamellae of cyclic diblock copolymers under steady shear. The perforated lamellae are transformed to perfect lamellae, and the layer normal is aligned to the direction parallel to the gradient of the velocity under weak shear, whereas they undergo a phase transition to form perfect lamellae whose normal is aligned to the direction perpendicular to the gradient of the velocity due to strong shear. Subjected to the moderate shear, the perforated lamellae are transformed to hexagonally ordered cylinders. By examining the microphase morphologies in the shearing process, we find shear thinning in general, which is reflected by the reorientation of the lamellae, and shear-induced thickening when hexagonally ordered cylinders appear. The calculated shear viscosity basically decreases with increasing shear rate but shows a local maximum at the shear rate that induces hexagonally ordered cylinders.

Abstract:The self-assembly behaviour of a diblock copolymer-diblock copolymer mixture under an oscillating shear field is investigated via cell dynamics simulation. The results indicate that the macrophase separation of the composite system is accompanied by the corresponding microphase separation induced by the oscillating shear field. With an increase in the shear frequency, the AB phase changes from a tilted layered structure to a parallel layered structure, and finally to a vertical layered structure. The CD phase transforms from the initial concentric ring into a parallel layer in the ring and then into a parallel layered structure; thus, the system finally forms a layered structure of the AB phase (vertical layer) and CD phase (parallel layer) perpendicular to each other. To verify the phase transition, the dynamic evolution of the domain size at different shear frequencies is analysed. The ordered phase transition with an increase in the oscillating shear field varies when the initial composition ratio of the system is changed. This conclusion provides a valuable guidance for the formation and transformation of ordered structures in experiments.

Macroscopic Lamellae Orientations of Diblock Copolymer Induced by Dynamic Shear

Abstract:Computer simulation based on the coupled map lattices has been carried out for morphologies of the diblock copolymeric system under applied periodic shear deformation. The main effort is concentrated on the influence of pre-annealing history on the lamellae orientations in dynamically sheared diblock copolymers. It is found that whatever the quenching temperature is, the perpendicular orientation (i. e. the lamellae normal is parallel to the vorticity axis) is always observed if the dynamic shear deformation with shear amplitude Г=1.0 and reduced shear frequency Ω= 0.005 is applied during annealing. In contrast to that, the parallel orientation (i.e. the lamellae normal is parallel to the velocity gradient direction) is observed if the dynamic shear with the same amplitude and frequency is applied to a thoroughly annealed (with the annealing time r>4000) diblock copolymer. Therefore, it is pointed out that the selection of lamellar orientations in dynamically sheared diblock copolymers is not solely dependent on the shear frequency and the quench depth, the pre-annealing history has a very strong influence on the selection of lamellar orientations. Thus, the contradictions existing in literature could be explained according to the thermal history of the samples and the results of this study.

Abstract:The effect of steady shear on multi-axial texture of symmetric diblock copolymer was investigated by using dynamic density functional theory. Through modifying the periodic boundary condition, the parallel-transverse biaxial texture and perpendicular-parallel-transverse triaxial texture have been observed. In the formation of the multi-axial texture, there are two critical velocities u per-par * and u par-tra * , at which the transition between the perpendicular and the parallel lamellar morphology, and the transition between the parallel and the transverse lamellar morphology occur, respectively. The two critical velocities increase as the interaction parameter increases, but they almost remain constant at different shear rates. Furthermore, the rotation from the transverse lamellae to the parallel lamellae induced by the shear strain, and the increase of lamellar spacings of the three lamellae after removing the shear, have also been observed by the time evolution of the morphologies. These phenomena are consistent with experimental work.
Lamellar Orientation and Corresponding Rheological Properties of Symmetric Diblock Copolymers under Steady Shear Flow

Abstract:The kinetics of lamellar orientation and rheological properties of symmetric diblock copolymers under steady shear flow using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) approach were studied. The simulation results show that a high shear rate can induce a perpendicular alignment for temperatures just below the order-disorder transition (ODT). On the other hand, a low shear rate induces initially mixed morphologies composed primarily of perpendicular and parallel orientations; eventually, the perpendicular alignment is transformed into a parallel alignment via undulation instability. On the contrary, with decreasing temperature, the high shear rate produces a parallel alignment, and the low shear rate induces a perpendicular alignment. The results also show that the reduced shear viscosity rapidly reaches a maximum at a reduced shear strain near one and then decreases. The first and second normal stress differences N-1 and N-2 are related to the lamellar alignment.

Abstract:The morphology changes of cyclic diblock polymer microphases under simple shear were studied via DPD technique. For LAM, parallel reorientation and parallel-perpendicular orientation transition phenomena were reproduced. Moreover, the undulation instability was observed. For PL, PL-HEX transition occurs under a strong shear. For HEX, parallel reorientation was identified. A two stage reorientation mechanism involving break-up and phase reformation was proposed to describe the reorientation process for both LAM and HEX, and the PL-HEX transition. For BCC phase, shear-induced melting was found.

Abstract:The self-assembly in cylinder-forming diblock copolymer thin films upon solvent evaporation is studied by lattice Monte Carlo simulations under the assumption that the solvent evaporation starts from the free surface and gradually propagates toward the substrate. The effects of solvent selectivity, surface preference, and solvent evaporation rate on the morphology evolution during solvent evaporation are systematically investigated. It is found that the perpendicular cylinder morphology tends to form under weak surface preference, whereas under strong surface preference this morphology is promoted by the fast solvent evaporation rate and the strong solvent selectivity. The surface preference window for forming perpendicular cylinders with solvent evaporation is found to be wider than with thermal annealing, and especially much wider when the solvent evaporation starts from random (disordered) initial states. A new mechanism of perpendicular cylinder formation is proposed and elucidated. Hexagonally packed short perpendicular cylinders formed in the earlier stage of the solvent evaporation may remain to the dry film when the solvent selectivity for the majority block is strong or the solvent evaporation rate is fast, which results in the enlargement of the surface preference-window of perpendicular cylinder morphology. Mix-orientated morphology with one or two layers of parallel cylinders at the top of the film and perpendicular cylinders throughout the remaining film is also predicted, and its formation mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:We employed the nonequilibrium dissipative particle dynamics method to study the shear flow behaviors of rod-coil diblock copolymers in solutions. The effects of copolymer concentrations and molecular architecture on the rheology are investigated. The simulated results show that the shear flow behaviors change from Newtonian to non-Newtonian when the morphologies transform from micelles to gels by increasing the copolymer concentrations. For the non-Newtonian systems, it was found that the curve of the viscosity versus shear rate is divided into three regions, that is, shear thinning region I, platform region II, and shear thinning region III. From the physical origin, the three-region behavior is governed by the distinct flow behaviors of the rod and coil blocks and their different time scale in response to the shear field. Additionally, by tuning the molecular architectures, the simulated results reveal that the slopes in region I and region III are influenced by the length of rod and coil blocks, respectively. The present research revealed the microscopic origin of the complex rheological properties of rod-coil diblock copolymers in solutions and could provide useful information for preparing functional materials based on block copolymers.
Simulated Annealing Study of Asymmetric Diblock Copolymer Thin Films

Abstract:We report a simulated annealing study of the morphology of asymmetric diblock copolymer thin films confined between two homogeneous and identical surfaces. We have focused on copolymers that form a gyroidal morphology in the bulk. The morphological dependence of the confined films on the film thickness and the surface-polymer interaction has been systematically investigated. From the simulations it is found that much richer morphologies can form for the gyroid-forming asymmetric diblock copolymer thin films, in contrast to the lamella-forming symmetric and cylinder-forming asymmetric diblock copolymer films. Multiple morphological transitions induced by changing the film thickness and polymer-surface interactions are observed.
Symmetric Diblock Copolymers in Thin Films (I): Phase stability in Self-Consistent Field Calculations and Monte Carlo Simulations

Abstract:We investigate the phase behavior of symmetric AB diblock copolymers confined into a thin film. The film boundaries are parallel, impenetrable and attract the A component of the diblock copolymer. Using a self-consistent field technique [M.W. Matsen, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.Chem.Phys" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. {\bf 106}, 7781 (1997)], we study the ordered phases as a function of incompatibility $\chi$ and film thickness in the framework of the Gaussian chain model. For large film thickness and small incompatibility, we find first order transitions between phases with different number of lamellae which are parallel oriented to the film boundaries. At high incompatibility or small film thickness, transitions between parallel oriented and perpendicular oriented lamellae occur. We compare the self-consistent field calculations to Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model for chain length N=32. In the simulations we quench several systems from $\chi N=0$ to $\chi N=30$ and monitor the morphology into which the diblock copolymers assemble. Three film thicknesses are investigated, corresponding to parallel oriented lamellae with 2 and 4 interfaces and a perpendicular oriented morphology. Good agreement between self-consistent field calculations and Monte Carlo simulations is found.
