Abstract:The kinetic evolution of ordered phases, i.e., single-cylinder (C-1), stacked disks (Dk), and single-helix (H-1), formed by a cylinder-forming AB diblock copolymer melt under the confinement of nanopores is investigated using the self-consistent field theory (SCFT) in conjunction with the string method. For C-1 -> H-1, the nucleation of a piece of H-1 is the rate-determining step, so a heterogeneous nucleation process is preferred. For the C-1 -> Dk transition confined in a small nanopore, the C-1 phase tends to break sequentially, forming disks one by one. The first barrier for breaking the straight cylinder is the largest barrier, which implies that this topological change of morphology is the rate-limiting process. During the transition of H-1 -> Dk, it could be easy for the system to fall into and be stuck in the structure of the tilted disks due to the mismatching period. For the case of Dk -> H-1, all of the disks first change into toroids, and then these toroids break into helical pieces. Exhaustive enumeration indicates that there exist several transition paths with close occurrence probabilities. Sometimes it is possible that a toroid and a helical piece merge together, but the connection of two adjacent helical pieces is preferred. Our work is helpful in deepening the understanding of the transition mechanism of ordered phases in block copolymers under the confinement of nanopores.
