Abstract:NiFe LDH (Layered Double Hydroxide) is a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen release reaction (OER), which is currently receiving more and more attention. Here, we propose a simple method to enhance the OER activity of NiFe LDH supported on Super P. The NiFe LDH@Super P catalyst with a nanoflower nanostructure was successfully synthesized via pre-hydrothermal treatment method, which ensures the normal nucleation process of the highly active NiFe LDH precursor and significantly promote the full contact of NiFe LDH and Super P in the three-dimensional space. The as synthesized NiFe LDH@Super P-2h sample exhibited excellent OER performances in alkaline media, and the overpotential is only 260 mV at a current density of 10 mA · cm-2. The outstanding OER electrocatalytic reaction performance is attributed to the unique three-dimensional nanoflower structure and excellent composite effect with Super P, which provides more specific surface areas and enables efficient transfer of electrons between them. This research work provides a simple and effective method for developing non-precious metal-based OER catalysts to replace expensive precious metal catalysts.
Nanostructured Co 3 O 4 @NiFe-LDH Heterojunction Catalysts for Improving Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Environment

Abstract:Constructing nano-heterojunction catalysts is a highly efficient method for enhancing the thermodynamics and kinetics towards oxygen evolution reaction. In the present study, NiFe-LDH nanoparticles in-situ grown on Co 3 O 4 nanowires bring about abundant heterogeneous interfaces, which productively increase specific surface area and tune electron density distribution. The as-obtained composite comprises rich unsaturated Co sites on Co 3 O 4 and hybrid crystalline/amorphous NiFe-LDH phase, both of which expedite the flow of charge and expose large amounts of active sites. The Co-Ni-Fe electron transport channels are established at the core-shell heterojunction with the transmission of electrons from Co 3 O 4 to NiFe-LDH. The resultant optimal Co 3 O 4 @NiFe-LDH/NF-100 catalyst displayed attractive OER activity with low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm −2 , along with excellent durability in alkaline media. This typical core-shell heterojunction promotes H 2 O dissociation and strengthens the adsorption of intermediates, thereby enhancing oxygen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Improvement of the low-cost transition metal electrocatalyst used in sluggish oxygen evolution reaction is a significant but challenging problem. In this study, ultrafine Fe-modulated Ni nanoparticles embedded in a porous Ni-doped carbon matrix were produced by the pyrolysis of zirconium metal-organic-frameworks, in which 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylate operating as a ligand can coordinate with Ni2+ and Fe3+. This strategy allows formation of Fe-modulated Ni nanoparticles with a uniform dimension of about 2 nm which can be ascribed to the spatial blocking effect of ZrO2. This unique catalyst displays an efficient oxygen evolution reaction electro-catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 372 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 84.4 mV·dec−1 in alkaline media. More importantly, it shows superior durability and structural stability after 43 h in a chronoamperometry test. Meanwhile, it shows excellent cycling stability during 4000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. This research offers a new insight into the construction of uniform nanoscale transition metals and their alloys as highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis of nanostructured transition metal compounds with adjustable components are often challenging due to the involvement of multiple synthetic procedures or complex manipulations. In this work, a one-step selfregulating acid-etching strategy is employed for nickel iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH). A twodimensional (2D) NiFe LDH nanosheet is speedy and efficiently formed. This as-prepared NiFe LDH exhibits electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This approach avoids numerous structural design challenges and provides highly active sites and a robust interface between catalyst and support. As a result, 2D NiFe LDH electrodes demonstrate highly efficient OER performance with a low overpotential of 300 mV and a Tafel slope of 70.6 mV dec- 1 at a current density of 100 mA cm -2.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we reported a novel OER catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH) supported on carbon cloth through the hydrothermal method and subsequent electrodeposition. The three-dimension (3D) hierarchical architecture facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte ions and O2 release. Experimental results demonstrate that the electrons transfer from the highly conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires to the NiFe-LDH sheets, which could expedite the charge transfer significantly. Importantly, the tunable adsorption/desorption nature of the oxygenated intermediates was achieved through the local delocalization of spin state at the heterointerface through the bridging O2-. Benefiting from the heterostructure and synergistic effects between different components, the optimized NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH-2 exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 74 mV dec−1 and a good durability for 25 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a novel approach to fabricate advanced OER catalysts and is expected to be extended to other materials for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and elucidating the structural transformation is urgent but remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a scalable approach to prepare welldefined Ni nanoparticles supported by nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni/NC), which possess superior catalytic activity and durability for OER, especially for the sample pyrolyzed at 600 degrees C. Moreover, the dynamic surface reconstruction of as-prepared catalysts during OER was detailedly investigated by ex-situ characterizations and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with the difference method that is a novel technique to probe the subtle structural changes. Our findings demonstrate that a surface oxidation to Ni(OH)2 on Ni nanoparticles occurs at the beginning of OER, and then a reversible phase transitions between Ni(OH)2 and NiOOH depends on the applied potential. Thus, this work develops a new method for preparing low-cost Ni-based electrocatalyst and sheds light on the direct observation of surface structure evolution during the OER.

Abstract:The efficiency of electrolytic water splitting is hampered by the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Addressing this challenge, we present a novel catalyst with rich Ni3S4/FeNi2S4 heterostructures anchored metal-organic framework-derived nanosheets interconnected by carbon nanotubes (NiFe-S@CNT). The NiFe-S@CNT electrocatalyst shows an ultralow overpotential of 246 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 (eta 10), surpassing the benchmark RuO2 (eta 10 = 291 mV) as well as many reported sulfide electrocatalysts. The strong heterointerface interaction between Ni3S4 and FeNi2S4 induce synergistic effects, modifying the electronic structure of active sites and generating a large number of lattice defects. Additionally, the carbon nanotubes skeleton facilitates efficient electron transfer and enhances electrical conductivity during the catalytic process. Moreover, the metal-organic framework derivative inherits a porous structure, aiding in electrolyte penetration and efficient bubble release. This study provides a facile and scalable strategy to develop nonprecious transition-metal-based OER catalysts with abundant heterointerfaces and active sites for efficient water splitting.

Abstract:The electronic structure of catalysts influences the electrocatalytic behavior. Herein, the electronic structure of NiO nanocrystals is modified by doping with a small amount of Li+. The Li+ doped NiO nanocrystals show much better OER activity than pristine NiO and LiNiO2, which is a result of tuned Fermi levels, stronger hybridization between Ni 3d and O 2p, and narrowed energy band gap. This work provides a facile strategy to regulate NiO electronic energy bands to promote OER performance.

Abstract:Promoting the formation of high-oxidation-state transition metal species in a hydroxide catalyst may improve its catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction, which remains difficult to achieve with current synthetic strategies. Herein, we present a synthesis of single-layer NiFeB hydroxide nanosheets and demonstrate the efficacy of electron-deficient boron in promoting the formation of high-oxidation-state Ni for improved oxygen evolution activity. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical analyses show that incorporation of B into a NiFe hydroxide causes a cathodic shift of the Ni 2+ (OH) 2 → Ni 3+δ OOH transition potential. Density functional theory calculations suggest an elevated oxidation state for Ni and decreased energy barriers for the reaction with the NiFeB hydroxide catalyst. Consequently, a current density of 100 mA cm –2 was achieved in 1 M KOH at an overpotential of 252 mV, placing it among the best Ni-based catalysts for this reaction. This work opens new opportunities in electronic engineering of metal hydroxides (or oxides) for efficient oxygen evolution in water-splitting applications.
Enhancing the Performance of 2D Ni-Fe Layered Double Hydroxides by Cabbage-Inspired Carbon Conjunction for Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets as one type of two-dimensional materials have garnered increasing attention in the field of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in recent decades. To address the challenges associated with poor conductivity and limited electron and charge transfer capability in LDH materials, we have developed a straightforward one-pot synthesis method to successfully fabricate a composite material with a microstructure resembling cabbage, which encompasses NiFe-LDH and nanocarbon (referred as NiFe-LDH@C). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed that the monolayer NiFe-LDH with a height of ~0.5-0.8 nm is uniformly distributed and closely bonded to the carbon support, leading to a significant enhancement in conductivity and facilitating faster electron and charge transfer. Moreover, the NiFe-LDH@C exhibits a substantial number of surface defect sites, which enhances the interaction with oxygen species. This dual enhancement in charge transfer and oxygen species-mediated transfer greatly improves the catalytic OER performance, which is further corroborated by theoretical calculations. Notably, the Ni10Fe6-LDH@C with the highest concentration of surface oxygen vacancies demonstrated superior water oxidation performance, surpassing commercially available RuO2 catalysts; an OER overpotential of 231 mV@10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 71 mV dec-1 was achieved.

Abstract:It is found that lattice doping by sulfur can promote the surface reconstruction of NiFe layered double hydroxide for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity. The enhancement mechanism and adsorption sites are identified. A dynamic surface reconstruction of oxide electrocatalysts in alkaline media is widely observed especially for layered double hydroxide (LDH), but little is known about how to promote the reconstruction toward desired surfaces for improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, surface reconstruction of NiFe LDH nanosheets is successfully induced to a higher degree via in situ sulfur doping than that by natural electrochemical activation. Theoretical calculations, operando Raman, and various ex situ characterizations reveal the S anion‐induced effect can lower the energy barrier and facilitate the phase transformation into highly active S‐doped oxyhydroxides. The generated S‐NixFeyOOH can optimize the intermediate adsorption and facilitate the OER kinetics. The reconstructed S‐oxyhydroxides catalyst presents superior OER activity and long‐term durability compared to undoped ones. This work provides a structure–composition–activity relationship during the in situ surface restructuring of NiFe LDH pre‐catalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from water electrolysis is gaining interest as a source of renewable energy storage due to its high efficiency and low environmental impact. However, the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits the overall efficiency of electrolyzer systems. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a novel electrocatalyst with a vertical structure, composed of Ti3CN MXene-modified NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) supported on nickel foam (NF) for efficient OER applications. The 1.0-LDH/3MXNF catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity, achieving a low overpotential of 247 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 and a favorable Tafel slope of 67.7 mV/dec. This can be attributed to the transfer of excess electrons from Ti3CN MXene to NiFe-LDH, which reduces the oxidation states of Ni and Fe, resulting in a strong interfacial coupling between Ti3CN MXene and NiFe-LDHs. Additionally, the electrode exhibited exceptional stability, maintaining constant performance with minimal potential degradation over prolonged operation. These findings underscore the potential of hybrid LDH-MXene systems as advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications, paving the way for further innovations in energy conversion technologies.

Abstract:Non-noble metal-based heterostructures have emerged as a promising strategy to construct high-efficient electrocatalysts for the Oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we reported a three-dimensional core-shell heterostructures of NiTe/NiCo-LDH (NiCo layered double hydroxides) on the Ni foam to resolve the low electronic conductivity and self-aggregation of NiCo-LDH. This NiTe/NiCo-LDH electrocatalyst could be prepared from a two-step reaction as a hydrothermal reaction and electrodeposition approach. Benefiting from the existence of strong interface effects between the NiTe nanorod core and NiCo-LDH nanosheet shell, the NiTe/NiCo-LDH electrocatalyst exhibited superior activity for the Oxygen evolution reaction at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 with an overpotential of 376 mV in 1.0 M KOH solution, which was significantly smaller than that of a single component of NiTe (586 mV), NiCo-LDH (410 mV) and commercial RuO 2 (428 mV). Furthermore, the NiTe/NiCo-LDH catalyst indicated long-term stability after 24 h continuous working. Density functional theory computations unveil that the heterostructures modified the original electronic structures and weakened the atomic interaction in the LDH layers, which have effectively adjusted the d -band center of the catalytic active Co sites to the Fermi level. This work demonstrated an effective strategy of interfacial engineering to optimize electron transfer to boost Oxygen evolution reaction performance.

Abstract:The hierarchical Co 2 Ni@NC nanoparticles realize fast mass transfer for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The synergistic effect between Co and Ni can effectively adjust the binding energy tending to an optimal value, further improving the energetics for the OER.
