Abstract:In this work, we have designed and synthesized two hybrid nonfused electron acceptors with a perylene diimide pendant (denoted TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6), where TPDICPBI featured a rigid linker, whereas TPDICPBI-C6 incorporated a flexible linker. It was realized via synthesizing the perylene diimide-containing dibromine compounds and performing the Stille reaction followed by Knoevenagel condensation. TPDICPBI with the rigid linker exhibits a much higher glass transition temperature (T g, 208 degrees C) compared to that (92 degrees C) of TPDICPBI-C6 with the flexible linker, which can be attributed to the rigid linker that limits the motion of both TPDIC and the PBI unit. Then, the two electron acceptors were applied to organic solar cells (OSCs). Devices based on TPDICPBI gave a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.91%, and TPDICPBI-C6-based devices showed a reduced PCE of 8.39%. Morphological characterization revealed that both TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6 exhibited overall weak aggregation/crystallization properties. The results suggest that by employing rational molecular engineering to adjust the aggregation/crystallization properties of TPDICPBI, the hybrid electron acceptors will give satisfactory photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Three new non-fullerene acceptors with the core of a fused nonacyclic unit, and the end-capping groups of 3-dicycanovinylindan-1-one are designed and synthesized for polymer solar cells. Those acceptor molecules bear four additional aliphatic side chains at the nonacyclic core, which endow them excellent solubility and crystallization-morphology tunability. Meanwhile, the effect of side chains’ size on the optical absorptions, electrochemical properties, and photovoltaic performance are carefully investigated. The results show that the bulk of side chains just slightly affects optical absorption and electronic energy levels, however, it significantly influences the molecular stacking and morphology separation, as well as the eventual device performance. When they are matched with the donor polymer poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1′,3′-di-2-thienyl-5′,7′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1′,2′-c:4′,5′-c′]dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T), the device based on the acceptor with octyl group can deliver the best PCE of 8.57%, which overwhelms those based on other two acceptor materials. This can be attributed to the preferable nanophase separation for their blend films, and high and balanced charge mobility. The results highlight the important role of backbone and side-chain tailoring in designing non-fullerene acceptors towards high-performance polymer solar cells.

Abstract:We design and synthesize four fused-ring electron acceptors based on-6,6,12,12-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-indacenobis(dithieno[3,2-b-2',3'-d]thiophene) as the electron-rich unit and 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanones with 0-2 fluorine substituents as the electron-deficient units. These four molecules exhibit broad (550-850 nm) and strong absorption with high extinction coefficients of (2.1-2.5) x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1). Fluorine substitution downshifts the LUMO energy level, red-shifts the absorption spectrum, and enhances electron mobility. The polymer solar cells based on the fluorinated electron acceptors exhibit power conversion efficiencies as high as 11.5%, much higher than that of their nonfluorinated counterpart (7.7%). We investigate the effects of the fluorine atom number and position on electronic properties, charge transport, film morphology, and photovoltaic properties.

Abstract:Three fused-ring electron acceptors, MC8-4H, MC8-4F and MC8-4Cl, featuring a new type of macrocyclic side chain were synthesized and applied in organic solar cells. The chemical structure of MC8-4H was unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The single crystal structure of MC8-4H indicates that the compact macrocyclic alkyl chain stretches over the central fused-ring core unit and causes a slight bending of the backbone. Among these three acceptors, MC8-4F shows the highest electron mobility of 6.64×10 -4 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and the best performance in solar cells. Power conversion efficiencies up to 14.68% were achieved by the cells based on MC8-4F and the donor L4.

Abstract:Developing completely non-fused small-molecule acceptors (CNF-SMAs) to further reduce production cost is strongly desired for the industrialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this contribution, we have designed and developed four tetrathiophene-based CNF-SMAs, named 4TTh-IC , 4TTh-ICF , 4TThC-IC , and 4TThC-ICF , by side chain engineering (hexyl vs . H atom) and end-capping group engineering (IC vs . ICF). These acceptors feature identical 3,5-dialkylthiophene side chains and a significant advantage of low production cost. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the introduction of large steric hindrance 3,5-dialkylthiophene side chains is beneficial for maintaing almost a coplanar tetrathiophene backbone. We find that the introduction of hexyl side chain into two outer thiophene units has limited effect on absorption spectra, whereas introducing fluorine atoms into the end-capping group can effectively regulate HOMO/LUMO levels, crystallinity, charge mobility, film morphology, and photovoltaic properties. Polymer donors PBDB-T and PM6 paired with these CNF-SMAs to fabricate OSCs. Results demonstrate that PM6-based solar cells deliver superior device performance to PBDB-T-based ones. In particular, 4TThC-ICF with hexyl side chain into two outer thiophene units and fluorinated end-capping groups exhibits excellent miscibility with the polymer donor PM6, and an encouraging and comparable PCE of 11.05%, owing to improved exciton dissociation and charge transport ability, more balanced charge mobility, reduced bimolecular recombination, and superior active layer morpology. This work provides a useful and effective attempt for the molecular design of high-performance and low-cost CNF-SMAs with an emphasis on the functionalized conjugated side chains.

Abstract:Polymerized small-molecule acceptors (PSMAs) have made significant progress as the application in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). Most PSMAs are constructed by near-infrared fused-ring electron acceptors via Stille polymerization, such as Y-series acceptors. However, very limited non-fused electron acceptors with simplified synthetic complexity have been used in PSMAs. In this work, two non-fused PSMAs with a benzothiadiazole (BT) core are developed for application in all-PSCs. The S-O non-covalent interaction and the regioregularity have been introduced to improve the crystallinity and charge transport properties. As a result, a high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.42% with an enhanced photocurrent has been obtained in these regioregular PBTO-γ-based solar cells, representing the highest PCEs based on non-fused PSMAs. The encouraging results will intrigue more design of non-fused PSMAs toward high-performance all-PSCs.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of small molecule acceptor (SMA)-based organic solar cells have already exceeded 18%. However, the development of polymer acceptors still lags far behind their SMA counterparts mainly due to the lack of efficient polymer acceptors. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of polymer acceptors named PY-X (with X being the branched alkyl chain) by employing the same central core with the SMA L8-BO but with different branched alkyl chains on the pyrrole motif. L8-BO with the branched alkyl chains on the beta position of the thiophene unit has previously shown improved structural order and charge transport compared to those of Y6. It was found that the molecular packing of SMA-HD featuring 2-hexyldecyl side chain used in the synthesis of PY-HD is similar to L8-BO, in which the branched alkyl chains lead to condensed and high-order molecular assembly in SMA-HD molecules. When combined with PM6, PY-HD-based all polymer solar cell (all-PSC) exhibits a high PCE of 16.41%, representing the highest PCE value for the binary all-PSCs. Moreover, the side-chain modification on the pyrrole site position further improves the performance of the all-PSCs, and the PY-DT-based device delivers a new record high efficiency of 16.76% (certified as 16.3%), with a high open-circuit voltage of 0.949 V, a short-circuit current of 23.73 mA cm–2 and a decent fill factor of 74.4%. Our work provides new insights for understanding the structure-property relationship of polymer acceptors and paves a feasible avenue to develop efficient conjugated polymer acceptors.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A new acceptor-donor-acceptor type small molecule acceptor, namely IDT-HN, has been developed, which consists of a newly developed 2-(3-oxo-2,3,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalen-1-ylidene)malononitrile as the peripheral electron-withdrawing group and indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']-dithiophene as the electron-donating core. Compared with the reference molecule (IDT-IC) that bears phenyl-fused indanone as the end groups, IDT-HN exhibited an elevated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. By utilizing IDT-HN as the electron acceptor and a wide bandgap conjugated polymer, PBDB-T, as the electron donor, optimized devices exhibited an impressively high power conversion efficiency of up to 10.22% with simultaneously improved open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and fill factor. The improved photovoltaic performance can be attributed to the widened and intensified absorption spectra, improved electron mobility, more ordered pi-pi packing structure, and the symmetric carrier transport mobility of the IDT-HN-based blend in comparison to those obtained from devices based on the reference molecule IDT-IC. These results indicate that the cyclic alkyl moiety incorporated into the peripheral groups plays a critical role in improving the performance of the corresponding solar cell devices. In addition, the power conversion efficiency of the devices remains at 91% of its optimum performance with a film thickness of 250 nm, indicating its great potential for future practical application.

Abstract:Research on fused-ring small-molecular-acceptors (SMAs) has deeply advanced the development of organic solar cells (OSCs). Compared to fruitful studies of ladder-type cores and end-caps of SMAs, the exploration of side chains is monotonous. The widely utilized alkyl and aryl side chains usually produce a conflicting association between SMAs' crystallinity and miscibility. Herein, a fresh idea about the modification of side chains is reported to explore the subtle balance between the crystallinity and miscibility. Specifically, a phenyl is introduced to the tail of the alkyl side chain whereby a new acceptor IDIC-C4Ph is reported. Moderately weakened crystallinity is observed, while maintaining preferred absorption profiles and face-on orientations. Concurrently, remarkably improved heterojunction morphologies and stacking orientations are detected. PBDB-T:IDIC-C4Ph devices exhibit greater efficiency of 11.50% than devices from alky and aryl modified acceptors. Notably, the as-cast OSCs of PBDB-TF:IDIC-C4Ph reveal outstanding FF over 76% with the best efficiency up to 13.23%. The annealed devices reveal further increased efficiency exceeding 14% with the state of the art FF of 78.32%. Overall, an effective but easily navigable approach is demonstrated to modulate the crystallinity of SMAs toward synergistically improved morphologies and molecular orientations of bulk heterojunction enabling highly efficient OSCs.

Abstract:Three fully nonfused electron acceptors based on quinquethiophene (5T) were designed and synthesized via side-chain engineering. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the introduction of large steric hindrance 2,6-di(hexyloxy)phenyl side chains is beneficial to maintain a coplanar backbone. However, in comparison with two 2,6-di(hexyloxy)phenyl substituted 5T-2P-1 and 5T-2P-2, 2-ethylhexyl substituted 5T-C2C6 presented more red-shifted absorption, smaller optical bandgap and stronger intermolecular stacking. Nonetheless, when blended with polymer donor D18, 5T-2P-1 with two inner side substituted groups demonstrated a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.40%, which outperforms those devices based on D18:5T-C2C6 (5.67%) and D18:5T-2P-2 (10.79%). This was attributed to the excellent miscibility of 5T-2P-1 with D18, more efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport, and higher carrier mobility in D18:5T-2P-1 based devices. This work demonstrates that side-chain engineering of nonfused electron acceptors is an effective strategy for realizing highly efficient OSCs.

Abstract:A star-shaped electron acceptor based on porphyrin as a core and perylene bisimide as end groups was constructed for application in non-fullerene organic solar cells. The new conjugated molecule exhibits aligned energy levels, good electron mobility, and complementary absorption with a donor polymer. These advantages facilitate a high power conversion efficiency of 7.4% in non-fullerene solar cells, which represents the highest photovoltaic performance based on porphyrin derivatives as the acceptor.

Abstract:Two perylene diimide (PDI) based polymeric acceptors, PFPDIBT-TT2F and PFPDIT-TT2F, which consist of fused-PDI moieties (FPDIBT and FPDIT) and 3,3′-difluoro-2,2′-bithiophene (TT2F) units, has been designed and synthesized. Compared with the unfused-PDI polymer (PPDI-TT2F) as the control molecule, the influence of structural conformation and π-conjugation extension on the performance of all-polymer solar cells has been investigated. Due to both the extended π-conjugation and the torsional polymer skeleton, the device adopting PFPDIT-TT2F achieved an obviously improved PCE of 5.11% comparing with the devices using the other two polymeric acceptors. This study demonstrates that the fused PDIs bridged by a thiophene enables both extended π-conjugation and twisted molecular conformation, and the latter plays a dominant role in the improvement of device performance.

Abstract:Four simple nonfused ring electron acceptors (H–2F, CH3–2F, OCH3–2F, and SCH3–2F) were designed and synthesized. The use of diphenylamine derivatives as the flanking group for the construction of nonfused ring electron acceptors can improve solubility, avoid the formation of oversized aggregates, and enhance the intramolecular charge-transfer effect to extend absorption spectra. The substituent group at the diphenylamine unit has a great impact on the absorption and energy level of acceptors, electron mobility and morphology of blend films. Unlike the other three acceptors, CH3–2F can form ordered molecular stacking and a face-on orientation in the donor/acceptor blend film. A single-crystal analysis demonstrates that CH3–2F can form a two-dimensional electron transport network. Among these four acceptors, CH3–2F-based organic solar cells provide the highest PCE of 12.28%. Side Chain Engineering of Polymer Acceptors for All-Polymer Solar Cells with Enhanced Efficiency

Abstract:Considering the combination of the advantages of both the acceptor-donor-acceptor and perylene diimide type acceptors, three new cross-conjugated small molecule non-fullerene acceptors were rationally designed and synthesized. Their thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit highly extended absorption spectra ranging from 300 to 700 nm as well as appropriate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels compared with those of the general acceptors based on perylene diimide. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells based on the resultant acceptors were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PTB7-Th:acceptor/PFN-Br/Ag configuration. Benefiting from efficient exciton dissociation, reduced bimolecular recombination, and enhanced and balanced electron mobility, the device-based PDIBDT-IT exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.06% with a high short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of 13.60 mA/cm(2), a fill factor (FF) of 60.45%, and an open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.74 V, which was higher than those of PDIBDT-RDN and PDIBDT-ITF. The underlying mechanism was carefully studied and discussed. The extended absorption of PDIBDT-IT contributes to its relatively high PCE; however, the performance will be potentially improved by ehnancing the electron mobility of these acceptors. Our results provide an efficient cross-conjugated approach and great flexibility in fine-tuning physicochemical properties, including absorption spectra and energy levels of the acceptors toward high-performance solar cells.
