Abstract:Colloidal plasmonic metal nanoparticles are capable of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for various analytical fields. Despite steady efforts to establish hot spots and obtain optimal SERS signals, it remains a challenge to ensure the accessibility and high density for enhancing Raman activity. Here, pyramid silicon was utilized as a template to fabricate the graphene oxide (GO)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)/pyramid polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) three-dimension (3D) flexible structure. Micrographs displayed the hybrid structure inherited the periodic 3D nanostructure with the pyramid microstructure, and the results exhibited that the proposed substrate possesses superior SERS performance with high sensitivity, homogeneity and stability. The enhancement factor reached up to 8.1 × 109 using rhodamine 6G as the probe molecules. Besides, the in situ detection of the malachite green (MG) on the shrimp’s surface was carried out to achieve and detect surface analytes. This work can provide a novel assembled SERS substrate as SERS-based biological detection in practical applications.

Abstract:Active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, 3D nano-arrays of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), were prepared using a photochemical approach and an electrophoresis deposition technique with the formation mechanism addressed. The GQDs (ca. 6nm average) fit into the inter-particle gaps between Ag NPs, as verified by their scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. This deliberately designed 3D assembly of Ag NPs and GQDs could promote the synergistic effects of both components to further enhance the SERS performances according to both electromagnetic mechanism and chemical mechanism. Preliminary experiments show that the 3D substrates exhibited strong SERS signals comparing with bare Si substrates. This work provides a promising way for 3D SERS substrates.
Hybrid Metal-Insulator-metal Structures on Si Nanowires Array for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering（SERS）is an efficient technique to detect low concentration molecules.In this work,periodical silicon nanowires（Si NWs）integrated with metal-insulator-metal（MIM）layers are employed as SERS substrates.Laser interference lithography（LIL）combined with reactive ion etching（RIE）is used to fabricate large-area periodic nanostructures,followed by decorating the MIM layers.Compared to MIM disks array on Si surface,the SERS enhancement factor（EF）of the MIM structures on the Si NWs array can be increased up to 5 times,which is attributed to the enhanced electric field at the boundary of the MIM disks.Furthermore,high density of nanoparticles and nanogaps serving as hot spots on sidewall surfaces also contribute to the enhanced SERS signals.Via changing the thickness of the insulator layer,the plasmonic resonance can be tuned,which provides a new localized surface plasmon resonance（LSPR）characteristic for SERS applications.

Abstract:Despite the great potential of the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), the difficulty in fabricating suitable SERS substrates is still a challenge. Based on the self-assembly of silica nanoparticles, the image shows a highly ordered, 3D petallike arrayed structure that serves as a promising SERS substrate because of both its high reproducibility and enormous SERS enhancement. Such a novel structure is easily achieved by anisotropically etching a self-assembled bilayer of silica nanoparticles followed by metal deposition. The spatially average SERS enhancement factor is on the order of 5×107, and the local enhancement factor is much higher; both factors can be improved further by optimizing parameters. Abstract:There dimensional (3D) metallic nanohybrids have attracted attentions for the applications in nanophotonic devices, catalysis and biosensor. Here, the 3D suspended Ag nanoparticles/Carbon nanotubes (AgNPs/CNTs) nanohybrids, obtained by self-aggregating AgNPs onto the suspended CNT networks, are synthesized and used for the SERS application. The electric field distribution with the near-field and far-field coupling can be obtained by the optimization of the nanogaps of the AgNPs. Such suspended AgNPs/CNTs nanohybrids are studied to be used as the ultra-sensitive SERS biosensor, benefiting from the bio-compatibility and chemical absorption of the CNT networks and the EM enhancement of the 3D denser "hotspots". R6G molecules with a concentration as low as 10(-15) M can be clearly detected, demonstrating their excellent Raman enhancement.

Abstract:We introduce a platform, comprised of silver nanoparticle decorated silica nanowires (SiONWs) dispersed on fused quartz substrates, for high sensitivity surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements using both frontal (through the analytes) and back-face (through the transparent substrate) excitation. Quasi-quantitative SERS performances on the specialized substrate, vis-à-vis a silver deposited bare fused quartz plate, showed: (i) the suitability of the Ag modified SiONW substrate for frontal as well as back-face excitation; (ii) a wider detection range with high sensitivity to Rhodamine 6G; and (iii) good underwater metal-oxide adhesion of the specialized substrates. Capable of surviving ultrasonic cleaning, the substrate introduced is one of the few reusable low-cost Ag-based nanostructured SERS substrates, requiring only a simple silver reload process (the silver mirror reaction).

Abstract:A facile method to prepare uniform and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is presented. Quasi-spherical silver colloids prepared by microwave heating and wafer-scale uniform silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays fabricated via wet chemical etching were united together as SERS substrates. The novel SERS substrates displayed stronger Raman enhancement than conventional silver colloids as well as outstanding uniformity and reproducibility in our experiments. In addition, it was found that the cross section of SiNW arrays possessed stronger enhancement activity than the front side. The enhancement effects of two adjacent SiNWs (as a simplification of SiNW arrays) were evaluated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method.

Abstract:To date, fabricating three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured substrate with small nanogap was a laborious challenge by conventional fabrication techniques. In this article, we address a simple, low-cost, large-area, and spatially controllable method to fabricate 3D nanostructures, involving hemisphere, hemiellipsoid, and pyramidal pits based on nanosphere lithography (NSL). These 3D nanostructures were used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates of single Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecule. The average SERS enhancement factor achieved up to 10 11 . The inevitably negative influence of the adhesion-promoting intermediate layer of Cr or Ti was resolved by using such kind of 3D nanostructures. The nanostructured quartz substrate is a free platform as a SERS substrate and is nondestructive when altering with different metal films and is recyclable, which avoids the laborious and complicated fabricating procedures.

Abstract:Broadband surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates can achieve strong SERS enhancement at multiple excitation wavelengths, which is highly desirable in diverse fields. Here, a facile and reliable interfacial layer-by-layer self-assembly technique was proposed to construct broadband and sensitive nanorod (NR) monolayer film over nanosphere (MFON) substrate. The NR MFON substrate with ultra-broad spectrum from visible to near-infrared region was achieved by varying the shape of plasmonic nanoparticles, which exhibits excellent SERS activity at different excitation wavelengths. Besides, the size of NRs and polystyrene spheres, and the layer numbers of NR film were altered to optimize the sensitivity of SERS substrates. Notably, the SERS intensity of the optimally designed NR MFON substrate is 25-fold larger than that of NR monolayer film deposition on the plane Si wafer. Furthermore, the optimal NR MFON substrate presents excellent reproducibility and a much wider quantitative detection range, which enables a wide-linear-range analysis of thiram in grape juice by a portable Raman spectrometer. Therefore, we envision that this study opens a new avenue toward the design of ultra-sensitive and broadband SERS platforms with widespread applications.

Abstract:Noble metal (Ag, Au) nanoparticles (NPs) deposited on the surface of three-dimensional (3D) materials are promising 3D surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. In this work, the authors reported the preparation of 3D wax/silica/Ag(Au) colloidosomes by sulfonic acid group–terminated silica spheres (SiO 2 –SO 3 H) combined with a Pickering emulsion technique, as well as seed-mediated growth method of noble metal NPs. The presence of–SO 3 H group on the silica spheres not only improves significantly the quality of wax/silica colloidosomes (forming perfect silica shell around wax droplet) but also can adsorb metal precursor ions via electrostatic attraction for further growth of metal NPs. The size and coverage of Ag(Au) NPs on wax/silica droplets can be facilely tuned, and relevant wax/silica/Ag(Au) colloidosomes and silica/Ag(Au) Janus particles are obtained via this strategy. The obtained wax/silica/Ag colloidosomes as 3D SERS substrates exhibited excellent SERS enhancement ability and detection limit of 4-aminothiophenol reached 10 −9 M.
Wafer-Level Highly Dense Metallic Nanopillar-Enabled High-Performance SERS Substrates for Molecular Detection

Abstract:Seeking sensitive, large-scale, and low-cost substrates is highly important for practical applications of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. Noble metallic plasmonic nanostructures with dense hot spots are considered an effective construction to enable sensitive, uniform, and stable SERS performance and thus have attracted wide attention in recent years. In this work, we reported a simple fabrication method to achieve wafer-scale ultradense tilted and staggered plasmonic metallic nanopillars filled with numerous nanogaps (hot spots). By adjusting the etching time of the PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) layer, the optimal SERS substrate with the densest metallic nanopillars was obtained, which possessed a detection limit down to 10-13 M by using crystal violet as the detected molecules and exhibited excellent reproducibility and long-term stability. Furthermore, the proposed fabrication approach was further used to prepare flexible substrates; for example, a SERS flexible substrate was proven to be an ideal platform for analyzing low-concentration pesticide residues on curved fruit surfaces with significantly enhanced sensitivity. This type of SERS substrate possesses potential in real-life applications as low-cost and high-performance sensors.

Abstract:3D highly ordered silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated silica photonic crystal beads (Ag/SPCBs) were prepared and exploited as a novel surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The monodisperse and size-controlled SPCBs were prepared via self-assembly of silica nanoparticles process using a simple microfluidic device. Then the Ag/SPCBs were easily obtained by in situ growth of AgNPs onto the NH2-modified SPCBs. Field emitting scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) were used to characterize the Ag/SPCBs. The effect of silica nanoparticle size and AgNO3 concentration on the SERS performance of the resultant Ag/SPCBs substrate were discussed in detail. The results indicate that the Ag/SPCBs have highest SERS signals when silica nanoparticle size is 250 nm and AgNO3 concentration is 0.8 mg/mL. Using malachite green (MG) as model analyte, the Ag/SPCBs substrate displayed a high sensitivity and a wide linear range for MG. The well-designed Ag/SPCBs show high uniformity and excellent reproducibility, and can be used as an effective SERS substrate for sensitive assay application.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) plasmonic nano-arrays can provide high surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensitivity, good spectral uniformity and excellent reproducibility. However, it is still a challenge to develop a simple and efficient method for fabrication of 3D plasmonic nano-arrays with high SERS performance. Here we report a facile approach to construct ordered arrays of silver (Ag) nanoparticles-assembled spherical micro-cavities using polystyrene (PS) sphere template-assisted electrodeposition and post-growth. The electrodeposited small Ag nanoparticles grow into bigger stable nanoparticles during the post-growth process, which could significantly improve the SERS sensitivity. The Ag nanoparticles-assembled 3D micro-cavity array provides much more hotspots in the excitation laser beam-covered volume than the two-dimensional counterpart. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of 612 cm-1 peak of rhodamine 6G (R6G) was calculated to be 8%, and the RSD of the characteristic peak taken from substrates of different batches was less than 10%. The detectable lower concentration as low as 1 fM was achieved for an aqueous solution of R6G. Such SERS substrate also showed high sensitivity to thiram (fungicide) and paraquat (herbicide) in water with limits of detection of 0.067 nM and 2.5 nM respectively. Furthermore, it also demonstrated that SERS detection of pesticide residues on fruits can be realized, showing a potential application in rapid monitoring food safety.

Abstract:The need for a highly-sensitive and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is the key factor restricting its practical applicability. In this work, we report on a periodic three-dimensional (3D) metallic nanostructure array, referred to as MeNTA fabricated using processes developed for large-scale semiconductor engineering. Specifically, MeNTAs were fabricated using Zr-based (Zr60Cu24Al11Ni5) metallic glass, which provides high strength, high ductility, and good biocompatibility. Over this was deposited a uniform coating of gold nanoparticles (NPs) to form a high-sensitivity 3D-SERS substrate. Using crystal violet as a probe molecule, the performance of an 3D-SERS substrate provided a minimum detection limit of 10−13 M with an enhancement factor of 1.49 × 108, thereby demonstrating its high sensitivity. The minimum relative standard deviation (RSD) for the substrate was 5.45%, and SERS performance did not degrade within 14 days after installation, thereby demonstrating high stability and repeatability. This research provides useful guidelines for the low-cost fabrication of SERS substrates of high sensitivity.

Abstract:We introduce a simple and cost-effective approach for fabrication of effective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. It is shown that the as-fabricated substrates show excellent SERS effects in various probe molecules with high sensitivity, that is, picomolar level detection, and also good reliability. With a SERS enhancement factor beyond 108 and excellent reproducibility (deviation less than 5%) of signal intensity, the fabrication of the SERS substrate is realized on a four-inch wafer and proven to be effective in pesticide residue detection. The SERS substrate is realized first through the fabrication of quasi-periodic nanostructured silicon with dimension features in tens of nanometers using superaligned carbon nanotubes networks as an etching mask, after which a large amount of hot spots with nanometer gaps are formed through deposition of a gold film. With rigorous nanostructure design, the enhanced performance of electromagnetic field distribution for nanostructures is optimized. With the advantage of cost-effective large-area preparation, it is believed that the as-fabricated SERS substrate could be used in a wide variety of actual applications where detection of trace amounts is necessary.
Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy in Several Complicated 3D Micro-/Nano-Structures

Abstract:The fabrication of substrates with strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity is one of the most important research focuses.The researches play an important role in exploring the applications of SERS.In this review article four simple and novel approaches for fabricating 3D micro-/nano-substrates have been demonstrated and the obtained SERS-active substrates have great advantages,such as high repeatability,good stability,and large enhancement factors.Rolled-up microtubes:the diameter of the microtube can be adjusted,and the SERS signal is stable.Micro-/nano-structures fabricated by using porous anodic alumina templates:the Raman signal presents excellent uniformity.Composite structures which combine nanoparticles with nanowires/nanorods:there are more “hot spots” and larger specific surface area for absorbing molecules.Micro/nano-structures produced using butterfly wings as templates:the substrates have high detection sensitivity and good signal reproducibility.Compared with low-dimensional SERS-active substrates,3D micro-/nano-structures have much superior performance and new features,such as the sensitivity and the repeatability of SERS signal are significantly improved.The introduction of 3D micro-/nano-structures in this field may pave the way for practical applications of SELS.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed a novel three-dimensional (3D) plasmonic nanostructure based on porous graphene/nickel foam (GNF) and gas-phase deposited Ag nanoparticles (NPs). Ag NPs with high density were directly deposited on the surface of 3D GNF by performing a novel cluster beam deposition approach. In comparison with traditional Ag substrate (SiO2/Ag), such hot-spots enriched 3D nanostructure showed extremely high electromagnetic field enhancement under incident light irradiation which could be used as a sensitive chemical sensor based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed nanostructure showed superior SERS performance in terms of Raman signal reproducibility and sensitivity for the probe molecules. 3D full-wave simulation showed that the enhanced SERS performance in this 3D hierarchical plasmonic nanostructure was mainly obtained from the hot-spots between Ag NPs and the near-field coupling between Ag NPs and GNF scaffolds. This work can provide a novel assembled SERS substrate as a SERS-based chemical sensor in practical applications.
3D Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate Based on an Array of Self-Assembled Au@SiO2 Microspheres

Abstract:A quasi-periodic array of 3D gold-nanoparticle-capped SiO2 microspheres (Au@SiO2) was designed and prepared with a facile approach to enhance the Raman signal intensity of adsorbed biomolecules. Through adjusting the thickness and annealing of Au thin films initially deposited on arrays of self-assembled SiO2 microspheres, we were able to control the diameter of Au nanoparticles and their interparticle spacing to produce two types of plasmonic near-field hot spots, locating at the gaps of such densely arranged Au nanoparticles on individual SiO2 microspheres and in the gap regions of neighboring SiO2 microspheres, respectively. Such double near-field enhancement mechanism leads to a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement factor up to 3×106 for Rhodamine 6G molecules. The SERS signal intensity was highly uniform with a relative standard deviation of 4.5%. This 3D SERS substrate has significant potential for various applications in the field of SERS detection of analytes and wearable biosensing.
