Abstract:K-ion battery (KIB) is a new-type energy storage device that possesses potential advantages of low-cost and abundant resource of potassium. To develop advanced electrode materials for accommodating the large size and high activity of potassium ion is of great interests. Herein, a segment-like antimony (Sb) nanorod encapsulated in hollow carbon tube electrode material (Sb@HCT) was prepared. Beneficial from the virtue of abundant nitrogen doping in carbon tube, one-dimensional and hollow structure advantages, Sb@HCT exhibits excellent potassium storage properties: in the case of potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) electrolyte, Sb@HCT displays a reversible capacity of up to 453.4 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A·g−1 and good rate performance (a capacity of 211.5 mAh·g−1 could be achieved at an ultrahigh rate of 5 A·g−1). Additionally, Sb@HCT demonstrates excellent long-cycle stability at a current density of 2 A·g−1 over 120 cycles. Meanwhile, electrolyte optimization is an effective strategy for greatly improving electrochemical performance. Through ex-situ characterizations, we disclosed the potassiation of Sb anode is quite reversible and undergoes multistep processes, combining solid solution reaction and two-phase reaction.

Abstract:The synthesis of NaxKyFe[Fe(CN)(6)] througha simple co-precipitation method and the application of these nanoparticles in sodium-ion batteries are presented. K1.90Fe[Fe(CN)(6)] with a cubic structure shows low volumetric change during electrochemical cycling. It is clarified by ex-situ X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry curves that K+ influences the intercalation sites of the neighboring Na+. More significantly, this hexacyanoferrate delivers a high capacity of 137.0 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 14 mA g(-1) and superior cyclability with 94% capacity retention after 120 cycles, showing great promise for sodium-ion battery applications. Abstract:Among the post-lithium battery technologies, potassium-ion batteries are promising for cost-effective large-scale energy storage, as potash is an abundant resource. However, a major challenge is to understand the structure-performance relationships of carbon anodes for potassium-ion storage. In this study, we have designed a variety of carbon composite materials from 100 % graphite to 100 % soft carbon and in between, with tunable structural features to fundamentally understand the roles of different carbon structural features in potassium ion insertion. We have found that the graphite-soft carbon composites (G-SC) show a high charge capacity of 280.2 mAh g(-1) with an increased initial coulombic efficiency, representing the best reversibility among different carbon composites. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and ex-situ structural characterizations have been applied to substantiate that the presence of soft carbon in G-SC inhibits the solid electrolyte interface layer formation and provides structural protection to the graphitic layers.

Abstract:In todays energy field, the long-term development of lithium-ion batteries has been limited due to the scarcity and high cost of lithium resources. On the other hand, research towards of potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) is on the rise. Herein, we synthesize Fe-induced carbon nanotube/nitrogen-doped carbon (FNC) derived from metal–organic frameworks as a promising anode for KIBs. The carbon nanotubes can enhance the electronic conductivity and increase the contact area, thus improving the rate performance. Additionally, the amorphous carbon polyhedral frame can boost the electrochemical stability. Therefore, the FNC electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity (a charge capability of 268 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g−1) and an excellent rate performance.

Abstract:In this study, a flexible and freestanding K‐rich KFeHCF/CC electrode is prepared by cathodic deposition to form the cathode in a flexible K‐ion battery (KIB). The flexible and wearable tubular KIB constructed with the potassium‐rich iron hexacyanoferrate cathode shows excellent flexibility, high capacity, and good stability. The results show that the electrode materials have a large potential in flexible potassium‐ion energy storage devices. The fast development of flexible and wearable electronics increases the demand for flexible secondary batteries, and the emerging high‐performance K‐ion batteries (KIBs) have shown immense promise for the flexible electronics due to the abundant and cost‐effective potassium resources. However, the implementation of flexible cathodes for KIBs is hampered by the critical issues of low capacity, rapid capacity decay with cycles, and limited initial Coulombic efficiency. To address these pressing issues, a freestanding K‐rich iron hexacyanoferrate/carbon cloth (KFeHCF/CC) electrode is designed and fabricated by cathodic deposition. This innovative binder‐free and self‐supporting KFeHCF/CC electrode not only provides continuous conductive channels for electrons, but also accelerates the diffusion of potassium ions through the active electrode–electrolyte interface. Moreover, the nanosized potassium iron hexacyanoferrate particles limit particle fracture and pulverization to preserve the structure and stability during cycling. As a result, the K‐rich KFeHCF/CC electrode shows a reversible discharging capacity of 110.1 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 after 100 cycles in conjunction with capacity retention of 92.3% after 1000 cycles at 500 mA g−1. To demonstrate the commercial feasibility, a flexible tubular KIB is assembled with the K‐rich KFeHCF/CC electrode, and excellent flexibility, capacity, and stability are observed.

Abstract:A potassium iron (II) hexacyanoferrate nanocube cathode material is reported, which operates with an aqueous electrolyte to deliver exceptionally high capacities (up to 120 mA h g-1 ). The cathode material exhibits excellent structural integrity, leading to fast kinetics and highly reversible properties. All of the battery materials are safe, inexpensive, and provide superior high-rate, long-cycle-life electrochemical performance.

Abstract:We propose potassium ferrous ferricyanide (KFeII[Fe-III(CN)(6)]) nano particles with a 3D open framework structure as a cathode for nonaqueous K-ion batteries. Electrochemical reaction mechanism analyses identify that two redox-active sites based on C and N coordinated Fe-II/Fe-III redox couples play a role in K-ion storage, and no phase change occurs in the different states of the initial and second charge-discharge processes. Thus, the (KFeII[Fe-III(CN)(6)] electrode exhibits a high discharge capacity of 118.7 mA h g(-1) at an operating voltage of 3.34 V and extremely excellent cycling stability with a capacity value of 111.3 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 10 mA g(-1). Moreover, an ultralong cycling lifespan of 1000 cycles with a high capacity retention of 80.49% and extraordinary voltage stability at 100 mA g(-1) can be acquired. Ex situ characterizations verify that the outstanding electrochemical performance of (KFeII[Fe-III(CN)(6)] is attributed to superior structural stability and electrochemical reversibility upon long-term cycling. Therefore, the (KFeII[Fe-III(CN)(6)] material can make KlBs competitive in EES applications.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are considered as one of the most promising energy storage devices owing to the close redox potential to lithium, rich abundance and low cost potassium resource, promoting the exploration on cathode materials for K-ions storage. This paper reports a detailed experimental study on potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate, K1.81Ni[Fe(CN)(6)](0.97)center dot 0.086H(2)O (KNHCF), cathode for KIBs. KNHCF synthesized possesses few [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) vacancies and coordinated water molecules, and high specific surface area along with developed microporous/mesoporous structures, which collectively induce highly reversible electrochemical intercalation process and fast kinetics. The resultant KNHCF cathode demonstrates reversible capacity of 57.0 mAh.g(-1), high operating voltage of 3.74 V, outstanding voltage stability with no decay, good cycling stability (87.34%) after 1000 cycles and long-term lifetime over 8000 cycles with capacity fading rate of 0.0052% per cycle. A solid solution mechanism with zero-strain, where one-electron shuttle relied on C-coordinated Fe-II/Fe-III couple, plays an important role for K-ions intercalation/deintercalation. A 3.34 V full cell assembled with graphite anode delivers a high energy density of 142.6 Wh.kg(-1) with the cpacity retention of 88.5% after 100 cycles, and ultra-long life-span over 5000 cycles can be achieved.

Abstract:Abstract Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are promising electrochemical energy storage systems because of their low cost and high energy density. However, practical exploitation of KIBs is hampered by the lack of high-performance cathode materials. Here we report a potassium manganese hexacyanoferrate (K 2 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ]) material, with a negligible content of defects and water, for efficient high-voltage K-ion storage. When tested in combination with a K metal anode, the K 2 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ]-based electrode enables a cell specific energy of 609.7 Wh kg −1 and 80% capacity retention after 7800 cycles. Moreover, a K-ion full-cell consisting of graphite and K 2 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ] as anode and cathode active materials, respectively, demonstrates a specific energy of 331.5 Wh kg −1 , remarkable rate capability, and negligible capacity decay for 300 cycles. The remarkable electrochemical energy storage performances of the K 2 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ] material are attributed to its stable frameworks that benefit from the defect-free structure.

Abstract:Due to the abundant and low-cost K resources, the exploration of suitable materials for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) is advancing as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries. However, the large-sized and sluggish-kinetic K ions cause poor battery behavior. This work reports a metallic octahedral CoSe2 threaded by N-doped carbon nanotubes as a flexible framework for a high-performance KIBs anode. The metallic property of CoSe2 together with the highly conductive N-doped carbon nanotubes greatly accelerates the electron transfer and improves the rate performance. The carbon nanotube framework serves as a backbone to inhibit the agglomeration, anchor the active materials, and stabilize the integral structure. Every octahedral CoSe2 particle arranges along the carbon nanotubes in sequence, and the zigzag void space can accommodate the volume expansion during cycling, therefore boosting the cycling stability. Density functional theory is also employed to study the K-ion intercalation/deintercalation process. This unique structure delivers a high capacity (253 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) over 100 cycles) and enhanced rate performance (173 mAh g(-1) at 2.0 A g(-1) over 600 cycles) as an advanced anode material for KIBs.

Abstract:Orthorhombic iron-based fluorosulfate KFeSO4F represents one of the most promising cathode materials due to its high theoretical capacity, high voltage plateau, unique three-dimensional conduction pathway for potassium ions, and low cost. Yet, the poor thermostability and intrinsic low electronic conductivity of KFeSO4F challenge its synthesis and electrochemical performance in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Herein, we report, for the first time, judicious crafting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-interwoven KFeSO4F microspheres in diethylene glycol (DEG) (denoted KFSF@CNTs/DEG) as the cathode to render high-performance PIBs, manifesting an outstanding reversible capacity of 110.9 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C, a high working voltage of 3.73 V, and a long-term capacity retention of 93.9% after 2000 cycles at 3 C. Specifically, KFSF@CNTs/DEG microspheres are created via introducing CNTs into the precursors DEG solution at relatively low temperature. Notably, the strong binding of the ether groups in DEG retards the nucleation and growth of KFSF, leading to in situ formation of microspheres with CNTs interwoven within KFSF crystals, thereby greatly enhancing electronic conductivity of KFSF. Intriguingly, the remarkable electrochemical performance of KFSF@CNTs/DEG cathode is found to stem from the massively exposed (100) plane and uniform interpenetration of CNTs inside KFSF microsphere. More importantly, in situ X-ray diffraction and electrochemical kinetics study unveil outstanding structural stability and high K+ diffusion rate of KFSF@CNTs/DEG. Finally, the KFSF@CNTs/DEG//graphite full cell displays a large energy density of ∼243 Wh kg-1. Such simple route to KFSF@CNTs/DEG highlights the robustness of creating inexpensive CNTs-interwoven polyanionic cathodes for high-performance PIBs.

Abstract:The abundant reserve and low price of potassium resources promote K-ion batteries (KIBs) becoming a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries, while the large ionic radius of K-ions creates a formidable challenge for developing suitable electrodes. Here Ni-substituted Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are investigated comprehensively as cathodes for KIBs. The synthesized K1.90Ni0.5Fe0.5[Fe(CN)6]0.89·0.42H2O (KNFHCF-1/2) takes advantage of the merits of high capacity from electrochemically active Fe-ions, outstanding electrochemical kinetics induced by decreased band gap and K-ion diffusion activation energy, and admirable structure stability from inert Ni-ions. Therefore, a high first capacity of 81.6 mAh·g–1 at 10 mA·g–1, an excellent rate property (53.4 mAh·g–1 at 500 mA·g–1), and a long-term lifespan over 1000 cycles with the lowest fading rate of 0.0177% per cycle at 100 mA·g–1 can be achieved for KNFHCF-1/2. The K-ion intercalation/deintercalation proceeds through a facile solid solution mechanism, allowing 1.5-electron transfer based on low- and high-spins FeII/FeIII couples, which is verified by ex situ XRD, XPS, and DFT calculations. The K-ion full battery is also demonstrated using a graphite anode with a high energy density of 282.7 Wh·kg–1. Abstract:We report combined experimental and theoretical studies of dipotassium terephthalate as anode material for K-ion battery application. Both pristine and carbon nanotube-containing dipotassium terephthalate materials are synthesized using an ultrafast microwave-assisted method. We found that carbon nanotube (CNT)-containing dipotassium terephthalate composite electrode delivers an initial reversible capacity of 247 mAh/g with 78% capacity retention, whereas pristine K2Tp deliveries an initial reversible capacity of 212 mAh/g with 53% capacity retention at the end of 100 cycles, at a current density of 50 mA/g. The density functional theory-based calculations have shown superior stability of dipotassium terephthalate lattice against the intercalation of potassium atoms. The quantum calculations are also employed to unravel the specifics of intercalation energetics of potassium ions into dipotassium terephthalate lattice. The intercalation and de-intercalation potentials of K-ions are obtained using cyclic voltammetry and compared with theoretical calculations under the assumption of a two-electron transfer reaction. The results of this study lay the ground for understanding the electrochemical processes involved in the operation of an organic anode in K-ion batteries, and thereby can facilitate the design of optimal organic molecular crystal-based electrode materials for battery applications.

Abstract:The development of a tavorite structured K‐ transition metal (TM)‐ fluorophosphate, having earth‐abundant Fe as the only TM, crystallizing in the orthorhombic crystal system and facilitating stable‐cum‐reversible electrochemical K‐extraction/insertion, has been reported here. Synthesized using low‐cost precursors, KFePO4F has also been found to be air‐stable. Detailed information pertaining to the bonding/structure, including lattice site occupancy, have been obtained via diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and FTIR, with XPS and ESR revealing the oxidation states of Fe in the as‐synthesized condition and upon being subjected to electrochemical potassiation/depotassiation. The electrochemical K‐insertion/extraction, supported by reversible Fe‐redox, leads to a reversible K‐storage capacity of ~102 mAh/g (within 1.5‐4.0 V), along with a 1st cycle Coulombic efficiency (CE) of ~93% (with CE >99.9% from 2nd cycle). Ex‐situ X‐ray diffraction, as well as operando synchrotron diffraction during galvanostatic cycling, indicates reversible changes in peak positions upon electrochemical K‐extraction/insertion, with no evidence for structural change. When used as cathode material in K‐ion 'full' cell (with hard carbon‐based anode), a discharge capacity of ~68 mAh/g, along with capacity retention of ~70% after 50 cycles, has been obtained; which confirms that this newly‐developed earth‐abundant Fe‐based potassium fluorophosphate can be utilized for potential application in sustainable battery chemistries, like K‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Herein, we report on a facile and novel synthesis and multifarious characterizations of the graphene wrapped KFeSO4F (KFSF@G) for the first time. The KFSF@G electrode exhibits admirable electrochemical performance with a high average operating potential of 3.55 V and high reversible discharge capacity of 111.51 mA h g-1.

In Situ Fe‐Substituted Hexacyanoferrate for High‐Performance Aqueous Potassium Ion Batteries

Abstract:In situ Fe‐substitution strategy stabilizes the crystal structure of hexacyanoferrate by decreasing the bond lengths and water content and improving the crystallization and K‐ion migration for high rate performance and cyclability of aqueous potassium batteries (AKIBs). The eco‐friendliness, safety, and affordability of aqueous potassium batteries (AKIBs) have made them popular for large‐scale energy storage devices. However, the cycling and rate performance of research materials, particularly cobalt hexacyanoferrate, have yet to meet satisfactory standards. Herein, a room‐temperature drafted K1.66Fe0.25Co0.75[Fe(CN)6]·0.83H2O (KFCHCF) sample is reported using an in situ substitution strategy. A higher concentration of ferrocyanide ions decreases the water content and increases the potassium content, while citric acid works as a chelating agent and is responsible for Fe‐substitution in the KFCHCF sample. The resultant KFCHCF sample exhibits good rate performance, and about 97% and 90.6% of discharge capacity are conserved after 400 and 1000 cycles at 100 and 200 mA g−1, respectively. The full cell using the KFCHCF cathode and 1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride‐derived polyimide (PNTCDA) anode maintains ≈74.93% and 74.35% of discharge capacity at 200 mA g−1 and 1000 mA g−1 for 1000 and >10,000 cycles, respectively. Furthermore, ex situ characterizations demonstrate the high reversibility of K‐ions and structural stability during the charge–discharge process. Such high performance is attributed to the fast K‐ion migration and crystal structure stabilization caused by in situ Fe‐substitution in the KFCHCF sample. Other hexacyanoferrates can be synthesized using this method and used in grid‐scale storage systems.

Abstract:Potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) in organic electrolytes hold great promise as an electrochemical energy storage technology owing to the abundance of potassium, close redox potential to lithium, and similar electrochemistry with lithium system. Although carbon materials have been studied as KIB anodes, investigations on KIB cathodes have been scarcely reported. A comprehensive study on potassium Prussian blue K0.220Fe[Fe(CN)6]0.805⋅4.01H2O nanoparticles as a potential cathode material is for the first time reported. The cathode exhibits a high discharge voltage of 3.1–3.4 V, a high reversible capacity of 73.2 mAh g−1, and great cyclability at both low and high rates with a very small capacity decay rate of ≈0.09% per cycle. Electrochemical reaction mechanism analysis identifies the carbon‐coordinated FeIII/FeII couple as redox‐active site and proves structural stability of the cathode during charge/discharge. Furthermore, for the first time, a KIB full‐cell is presented by coupling the nanoparticles with commercial carbon materials. The full‐cell delivers a capacity of 68.5 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and retains 93.4% of the capacity after 50 cycles. Considering the low cost and material sustainability as well as the great electrochemical performances, this work may pave the way toward more studies on KIB cathodes and trigger future attention on rechargeable KIBs.
