Abstract:In order to investigate the size effects of two-dimensional nanoparticles on the energy storage property of composite PCMs, graphite nanosheets(GNS-10, GNS-30, GNS-90) with different sizes were prepared by exfoliating expanded graphite with the assistance of ultra-sonication for different time and dispersed into hexadecanol. The prepared PCMs were characterized with SEM, XRD and Hot Disk, and the thermal conductivity was predicted by Maxwell, Bruggeman and Nielsen models. Results reveal that the graphite nanosheets presenting larger aspect ratios can achieve better thermal conductivity enhancement, because relatively large nanofiller contributes to the formation of heat transfer network in PCM matrix. An enhancement of thermal conductivity up to 517% has been achieved by GNS-10 at the loading of 10%(mass). The prediction of Nielsen model fits the experimental value better with the shape factor of A as 100 to 180. Compared to the great increase in thermal conductivity after the addition of graphite nanosheets, the changes in melting/solidification temperature and enthalpy of composite PCMs are negligible. Furthermore, the increased freezing rate of composited PCMs is clearly presented as a consequence of enhanced thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Freeze casting is a very simple, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly method for the production of porous materials. In this method, the suspended particles are concentrated and compressed together as ice crystals grow so that the walls of particles will form between the ice crystals. After sublimation of ice, only the colloidal aggregate particles will remain without collapsing. In this study, by drying of graphene hydrogel using freeze casting under ambient pressure, the final pore size of graphene aerogels was controlled. Three types of graphene aerogels were prepared with three different freezing rates of 2, 1 and 0.64 °C/min. The results showed that by decreasing the cooling rate, the average pore size increased from 35.6 to 43.4 μm and the density decreased from 50 to 40 mg/cm3. The effect of freezing rate on the formation of controlled residual pores and some physical properties of graphene aerogels such as absorption capacity of gas oil, kerosene, cooking oil and ethanol was investigated.

Abstract:<p>Finding out the effects of graphite (Gr) flake size on the properties of Gr (Graphene Nanoplatelet (GNP))/Al composites will be helpful to design and develop various Gr(GNP)/Al composites which need to meet different application requirements. In this work, thermal conductivity (TC) and flexural strength of Gr/Al and Gr(GNP)/Al composites with different Gr flake size were investigated. Through-plane TC of Gr/Al composites is about 50% of the results predicted by EMA model. However, after introducing GNP to Gr flakes, through-plane TC of Gr(GNP)/Al composites reaches about 90% of the results predicted by EMA model. When Gr flake size are 150, 500, 850 μm, respectively, the in-plane TC of Gr/Al composites can be improved by 8.5%, 6.4%, 5.4% after introducing GNP, while the through-plane TC of Gr/Al composites can be improved by 62%, 75%, 83%. So the introduction of GNP to the Gr flake is more effective in improving through-plane TC than in-plane TC. GNP's improvement ratio on the through-plane TC of Gr/Al composites increases with the increase of Gr flake size. Furthermore, as Gr flake size increases, GNP's improvement ratio on the flexural strength of Gr/Al composites increases, which is attributed to the increase of strengthening effect of GNP on the interface region.</p>

Abstract:The microstructure of graphene aerogel (GA) plays a crucial role in determining its performance. However, challenges persist in simplifying and enhancing control over the microstructure of GA. In this study, we introduce a novel bidirectional freeze-casting method, allowing for the preparation of GAs with three different microstructures. Notably, the GA with concentric ring structure exhibits exceptional compressibility and fatigue resistance in both axial and radial directions, capable of undergoing 5000 compression-recovery cycles at 90% strain and 70% strain, respectively. In-situ SEM characterization provides insights into the energy dissipation mechanism during compression processes. GA with radial microstructure demonstrates an impressive absorption capacity ranging from 165.82 to 369.47 g/g. Moreover, the GA with concentric ring microstructure displays non-linear resistance changes with strain under both axial and radial compression. These GAs demonstrate significant potential applications in environmental remediation and flexible electronics.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive analysis of the Electromagnetic (EM) properties of graphene aerogel-based shielding materials prepared by freeze casting. Controlling the freeze casting temperature allows for tailoring the pore sizes of graphene aerogels, which further affects the permittivity and EM shielding properties. To protect the aerogel structures from collapsing during high temperature heat-treatment, we used Melamine sponge (MS) as a supporting strut. Through a comparison with bare aerogels, we find that the presence of MS can significantly modify both the reflection and absorption performances and that an absorption-dominated shielding material can be obtained. After heat-treatment at 1000 °C for two hours, the MS-supported aerogel sample (MS-aero) showed a shielding efficiency of 55.8 dB. Our work shows that the material composition and the microstructural architecture of aerogels crucially influence their electromagnetic shielding efficiency.

Abstract:Graphene aerogel (GA) samples, prepared by the Sol-Gel method, were tested under quasi-static and dynamical compression, and characterized via surface area analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the drying method has a significant influence on the sample’s microstructure as well as its mechanical compression properties. The supercritical CO2 dried sample has a notable higher specific surface area, and higher compression strength; although the freeze dried sample is much lighter than the supercritical CO 2 dried sample, it exhibits a nonlinear superelastic behavior and large compressibility with a reversible strain up to 94%; under the dynamic compression test, the supercritical CO 2 dried sample presents a negative Poisson’s ratio behavior whereas the flower-like failure pattern was observed for the freeze dried sample. GA, therefore, is a promising candidate for energy absorption purposes because of its very low density, high specific surface area and porous microstructure.

Abstract:Graphene aerogel (GA), as a novel solid material, has shown great potential in engineering applications due to its unique mechanical properties.In this study, the mechanical performance of GA under high-velocity projectile impacts is thoroughly investigated using full-atomic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.The study results show that the porous structure and density are key factors determining the mechanical response of GA under impact loading.Specifically, the impact-induced penetration of the projectile leads to the collapse of the pore structure, causing stretching and subsequent rupture of covalent bonds in graphene sheets.Moreover, the effects of temperature on the mechanical performance of GA have been proven to be minimal, thereby highlighting the mechanical stability of GA over a wide range of temperatures.Finally, the energy absorption density (EAD) and energy absorption efficiency (EAE) metrics are adopted to assess the energy absorption capacity of GA during projectile penetration.The research findings of this work demonstrate the significant potential of GA for energy absorption applications.

Abstract:The ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation method has emerged as an essential research direction for graphene preparation due to its cost-effectiveness and ability to minimize defects. However, this method faces challenges related to processing throughput when scaled up for industrial production. In this study, industrial grade ultrasonic homogenizers with different frequencies and probe types were evaluated for the preparation of FLG. In each experiment, 1.5 kg of graphite slurry was treated using a cyclic ultrasonic system. The results demonstrated that the 25 kHz dumbbell probe produced the thinnest FLG with the lowest defect density. Moreover, applying a static pressure of 0.2 MPa in the cycle system enhanced the cavitation-induced exfoliation of graphite sheets, effectively reducing the layer count and distribution range of FLG. This method improves the conductivity while minimizing defect density.

Abstract:Highly porous graphene aerogels (GAs) demonstrate extensive applications in damping blocks, thermal insulation, sensors, catalyst carriers and energy storage because of their ultralow density, superelasticity and functional versatility. These properties have been regulated by topological structural design and composite of materials, but the effect of the structural unit on the properties of GA has not been reported. Herein, highly porous GAs with excellent mechanical performances and improved adsorption capacities have been prepared by a freezing-drying process. Ultra-flyweight (rho < 1 mg cm(-3) ), superelastic (low energy loss factor) and high-strength (i.e., high Young' modulus) aerogels can be obtained by integrating different wall thicknesses and pore sizes. And it has been found that the grain refinement of ice crystals has a positive impact on the strength and modulus of as-prepared GAs during freezing-drying, which is similar to typical Hall-Petch strengthening in fine crystal metal materials. The as-prepared GA with the thinnest wall thickness exhibits the highest adsorption properties with respect to the oil solvents, and the adsorption capacity is 1272 times of its own weight. This study enriches our understanding of the structure and performance of GAs and indicates a practical methodology to ensure precise structural control of high-performance GAs for various applications. Abstract:Graphene aerogel (GA), a 3D carbon-based nanostructure built upon 2D graphene sheets, is well known for being the lightest solid material ever synthesized. It also possesses many other exceptional properties such as high specific surface area and large liquid absorption capacity thanks to its ultra-high porosity. Computationally, the mechanical properties of GA have been studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which uncover nanoscale mechanisms beyond experimental observations. However, studies on how GA structures and properties evolve in response to simulation parameter changes, which provide valuable insights to experimentalists, have been lacking. In addition, the differences between calculated properties via simulations and experimental measurements have rarely been discussed. To address the shortcomings above, in this study, we systematically study various mechanical properties and the structural integrity of GA as a function of a wide range of simulation parameters. Results show that during the in silico GA preparation, smaller and less spherical inclusions (mimicking the effect of water clusters in experiments) are conducive to strength and stiffness but may lead to brittleness. Additionally, it is revealed that a structurally valid GA in the MD simulation requires the number of bonds per atom to be at least 1.40, otherwise the GA building blocks are not fully interconnected. Finally, our calculation results are compared with experiments to showcase both the power and the limitations of the simulation technique. This work may shed light on the improvement of computational approaches for GA as well as other novel nanomaterials.

Abstract:Dispersion of graphite in water was achieved using clay as dispersing aid. In the absence of polymer, the clay/graphite suspensions were sufficiently stable to produce aerogels composed of very thin layers of uniformly dispersed nanoparticles. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) aerogels containing binary nanofillers (clay plus graphite) were then fabricated and tested. These composites were found to maintain low thermal and electrical conductivities even with high loading of graphite. A unique compressive stress-strain behavior was observed for the aerogel, exhibiting a plateau in the densification region, likely due to sliding between clay and graphite layers within the PVOH matrix. The aerogels containing only graphite exhibited higher compressive modulus, yield stress and toughness values than the samples filled with binary nanofillers. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra for the same composite aerogel before and after compression testing illustrated the compression-induced dispersion changes of nanofillers. Composites containing 50 wt % graphite demonstrated a downshift of its 2D Raman peak implying graphite exfoliation to graphene with less than 5 layers.

Abstract:The structure and mechanical properties of composites consisting of a metal matrix based on aluminum and its alloys of different compositions (AA-3003 and AA-5154) and graphene synthes sized in situ under a layer of molten salts were investigated depending on the chemical composition and grain size of the matrix. Aluminum matrix composites of three compositions were studied in as-cast coarse-grained, deformed fine-grained (grain size < 1 mm), and deformed sub microcrystalline (grain size < 1 μm) states in order to compare the structural characteristics of composites with different grain sizes. The composites were subjected to deformation with a split Hopkinson (Kolsky) bar and to dynamic-channel angular pressing. The hardness and dynamic mechanical properties of the composites were measured at strain ratesfrom 1.8 − 4.7 × 103 to 1.6 − 2.4 × 105 s−1. It was found that grain refinement induced a sharp increase in the hardness of composites with various compositions (by a factor of 1.6–2.6). A correlation of the elastic-plastic properties of the aluminum matrix composites with the grain sizes and chemical compositions of the matrices was established. A transition from coarse-grained to sub microcrystalline structure was shown to improve the elastic-plastic properties on average by a factor of 1.5. It was proved that the reinforcing effect of graphene increased with the decreasing grain size of the matrix. Mechanisms of reinforcement of the aluminum matrix composites using graphene were proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Many experiments have shown that carbon nanotube-coated (CNT-coated) graphene foam (CCGF) has specific mechanical properties, which further expand the application of graphene foam materials in many advanced fields. To reveal the microscopic deformation mechanism of CCGF under uniaxial compression and the main factors affecting their mechanical properties, numerical experiments based on the coarse-grained molecular dynamics method are systematically carried out in this paper. It is found that the relative stiffness of CNTs and graphene flakes seriously affects the microscopic deformation mechanism and strain distribution in CCGFs. The bar reinforcing mechanism will dominate the microstructural deformation in CCGFs composed of relatively soft graphene flakes, while the microstructural deformation in those composed of stiff graphene flakes will be dominated by the mechanical locking mechanism. The effects of CNT fraction, distribution of CNTs on graphene flakes, the thickness of graphene flakes, and the adhesion strength between CNTs and graphene flakes on the initial and intermediate moduli of foam materials are further studied in detail. The results of this paper should be helpful for a deep understanding of the mechanical properties of CCGF materials and the optimization design of microstructures in advanced graphene-based composites.

The impact of carbon fiber (CF) composites sizing with graphene oxide (GO) to form brick‐and‐mortar structures on their mechanical properties and thermal conductivity has not been closely examined. This study systematically investigates the effect of GO sheet size on the interfacial properties and thermal conductivity of CF composites. Three sizes of GO—small (0.11 μm), medium (0.33 μm), and large (0.97 μm)—were used to modify CF surfaces via layer‐by‐layer self‐assembly, forming the brick‐and‐mortar structures. The mechanical properties were assessed through flexural tests, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests and tensile tests, while thermal conductivity was measured using a thermal constant analyzer. The results revealed that medium‐sized GO (GO‐M) significantly enhanced the interfacial strength and toughness of the composites. This improvement is attributed to the orderly arrangement of GO‐M on the CF surface, which enhances stress transfer between the fiber and the matrix. In contrast, small‐sized GO (GO‐S) tended to scatter, resulting in less effective reinforcement, while large‐sized GO (GO‐L) exhibited stacking and agglomeration, limiting its reinforcement effectiveness. However, GO‐L provided the highest thermal conductivity due to the formation of continuous heat conduction pathways. These findings suggest that GO‐M offers a balanced improvement in mechanical properties, whereas GO‐L is more suitable for applications requiring high thermal conductivity. This work underscores the importance of selecting the appropriate GO sheet size to optimize the interfacial properties and thermal conductivity of CF composites, which is crucial for enhancing their performance in high‐end engineering applications, such as aerospace, automotive, and marine industries. Highlights Modification of CF composites by GO‐M sheets significantly improved toughness and strength. GO‐L sheets formed an effective heat transfer channel with the highest thermal conductivity. Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, Ahead of Print. In this study, graphene aerogel (GA) was used to improve the multifunctionality of epoxy resin, which is essential for its application in integrated circuits and semiconductors. To this end, a scalable method with a high capacity for producing large-size GA with desirable quality was proposed for GA synthesis. The synthesized GA was utilized to produce epoxy nanocomposites by infiltrating epoxy resin into its macro-pores. The flexural modulus of the GA/epoxy nanocomposite was investigated experimentally, and the results indicated a 30% increase with respect to the pure epoxy. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite reached an exceptional value of 0.7 S/m, which is 13 orders of magnitude greater than the electrical conductivity of pure epoxy. Moreover, the measured thermal conductivity for pure epoxy and GA/epoxy nanocomposites were 0.23 and 0.40 W/mK, respectively. The percentage of thermal conductivity improvement per filler content was over 101, among the highest values attained by different filler types in polymer nanocomposites. This study demonstrates that the proposed method can simultaneously increase epoxy polymers' mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties with a low nanomaterial concentration, which could greatly benefit applications requiring highly multifunctional epoxy polymers.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of the graphene nano-platelets reinforced alumina nanocomposites at cryogenic temperature are reported for the first time. The GNPs/Al2O3 composites are fabricated by a colloidal process. The temperature-dependent increase in hardness is accompanied by a substantial increase in fracture toughness with the temperature decreasing from 293 K to 77 K. The optimum content of GNPs in GNPs/Al2O3 composites is 1.0 vol%. The effect of residual stress on the toughness and fracture mode is discussed on the basis of theoretical calculation and analysis. Cryogenic temperature has contributed to the reinforcing effect of graphene in composites. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:It is essential to understand the size scaling effects on the mechanical properties of graphene networks to realize the potential mechanical applications of graphene assemblies. Here, a “highly dense‐yet‐nanoporous graphene monolith (HPGM)” is used as a model material of graphene networks to investigate the dependence of mechanical properties on the intrinsic interplanar interactions and the extrinsic specimen size effects. The interactions between graphene sheets could be enhanced by heat treatment and the plastic HPGM is transformed into a highly elastic network. A strong size effect is revealed by in situ compression of micro‐ and nanopillars inside electron microscopes. Both the modulus and strength are drastically increased as the specimen size reduces to ≈100 nm, because of the reduced weak links in a small volume. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the deformation mechanism involving slip‐stick sliding, bending, buckling of graphene sheets, collapsing, and densification of graphene cells. In addition, a size‐dependent brittle‐to‐ductile transition of the HPGM nanopillars is discovered and understood by the competition between volumetric deformation energy and critical dilation energy.
Effect of sizing on the interfacial shear strength of carbon fiber/epoxy resin monofilament composite

Abstract:The single fiber fragmentation test (SFFT) was used to measure the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of sized and unsized CF800/epoxy resin monofilament composite in order to evaluate the effect of sizing respectively. Besides, the interfacial reinforcing mechanism was explored by analyzing the surface morphology of the carbon fibers, the wettability between the carbon fibers and the epoxy resin, and the chemical characteristics of the fiber surface. Moreover, the effect of sizing on heat and humidity resistance of interface was investigated by aging test. The results show that sizing improves IFSS of CF800/epoxy resin monofilament composite by 59% through increasing the functional groups containing oxygen and through enhancing wettability, while after sizing the heat and humidity resistance of interface is decreased.

Abstract:Materials combining lightweight, robust mechanical performances, and multifunctionality are highly desirable for engineering applications. Graphene aerogels have emerged as attractive candidates. Despite recent progresses, the bottleneck remains how to simultaneously achieve both strength and resilience. While multiscale architecture designs may offer a possible route, the difficulty lies in the lack of design guidelines and how to experimentally achieve the necessary structure control over multiple length scales. The latter is even more challenging when manufacturing scalability is taken into account. The Thalia dealbata stem is a naturally porous material that is lightweight, strong, and resilient, owing to its architecture with three-dimensional (3D) interconnected lamellar layers. Inspired by such, we assemble graphene oxide (GO) sheets into a similar architecture using a bidirectional freezing technique. Subsequent freeze-drying and thermal reduction results in graphene aerogels with highly tunable 3D architectures, consequently an unusual combination of strength and resilience. With their additional electrical conductivity, these graphene aerogels are potentially useful for mechanically switchable electronics. Beyond such, our study establishes bidirectional freezing as a general method to achieve multiscale architectural control in a scalable manner that can be extended to many other material systems.
