Abstract:The microstructural evaluation of oil shale is challenging which demands the use of several complementary methods. In particular, an improved insight into the pore network structure and connectivity before, during, and after oil shale pyrolysis is critical to understanding hydrocarbon flow behavior and enhancing recovery. In this experimental study, bulk analyses are combined with traditional and advanced imaging methods to comprehensively characterize the internal microstructure and chemical composition of the world's richest oil shale deposit, the Green River Formation (Mahogany Zone). Image analysis in two dimensions (2-D) using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and in three dimensions (3D) using X-ray microtomography (mu CT) reveals a complex and variable fine-grained microstructure dominated by organic-rich parallel laminations of the order of 10 mm thick which are tightly bound in a highly calcareous and heterogeneous mineral matrix. We also report the results of a detailed mu CT study of the Mahogany oil shale with increasing pyrolysis temperature (300-500 degrees C) at 12 mm and 2 mm voxel sizes. The physical transformation of the internal microstructure and evolution of pore space during the thermal conversion of kerogen in oil shale to produce hydrocarbon products was characterized. The 3-D volumes of pyrolyzed oil shale were reconstructed and image processed to visualize and quantify the volume and connectivity of the pore space. The results show a significant increase in anisotropic porosity associated with pyrolysis between 400 and 500 degrees C with the formation of micro-scale connected pore channels developing principally along the kerogen-rich lamellar structures. Given the complexity and heterogeneity of oil shale, we also characterize the representative size at which porosity remains constant. Our results provide a direct observation of pore and microfracture development during oil shale pyrolysis and the petrophysical measurements from this study serve as valuable input parameters to modeling oil shale pyrolysis processes. Abstract:The structure and connectivity of the pore space during the pyrolysis of oil shales determines hydrocarbon flow behavior and ultimate recovery. We image the time evolution of the pore and microfracture networks during oil shale pyrolysis using synchrotron X-ray microtomography. Immature Green River (Mahogany Zone) shale samples were thermally matured under vacuum conditions at temperatures up to 500 degrees C while being periodically imaged with a 2 mu mvoxel size. The structural transformation of both organic-rich and organic-lean layers within the shale was quantified. The images reveal a dramatic change in porosity accompanying pyrolysis between 390 and 400 degrees C with the formation of micron-scale heterogeneous pores. With a further increase in temperature, the pores steadily expand resulting in connected microfracture networks that predominantly develop along the kerogen-rich laminations.

Abstract:Pyrolysis is a promising technology to increase pore and fracture connectivity in oil shale and thereby accomplish commercial recovery of unconventional hydrocarbons. Herein, real-time oil shale pyrolysis dynamics are imaged at nanoscale via environmental scanning electron microscopy (imaging resolution of 58 nm/pixel, imaging speed of 1 frame per second, and heating temperature up to 750 °C). It is counterintuitively observed that 1) inorganic nano-fractures started to appear below 100 °C; 2) inorganic nano-fracture width had a non-monotonous relationship with temperature; and 3) organic kerogen areas decreased monotonously with increasing temperature. These findings will establish a standard benchmark for unconventional resource recovery, promote fundamental understanding of oil shale pyrolysis dynamics at nanoscale and provide key guidance on oil shale extraction at reservoir scale.

Abstract:Despite the importance of kerogen as the organic backbone of hydrocarbon production from source rocks such as oil shale, properties of kerogen at both the atomic and micron scales remain unexplored under non-destructive conditions. As the demand for the utilization of kerogen in oil shale rises, identifying its atomic anisotropy and three-dimensional (3D) distribution in oil shale becomes even more important. In this study, using a hybrid preparation-analysis method, we propose a panel of physical preparation methods, including mechanical stripping and polishing thinning, and characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), and oblique incidence reflectance difference (OIRD) analysis without considering pyrolysis and the chemical separation of kerogen. We investigated kerogen's anisotropy at the atomic scale and its 3D distribution as flocculants and strips and developed a new OIRD computed tomography (CT) method (OIRD-CT) amenable to experimental validation, including SEM and THz scanning. Thus, the multiscale properties of kerogen detected using the combination of physical preparation and advanced characterization techniques, especially OIRD-CT, are helpful in improving our understanding of the precise utilization of oil shale.

Abstract:Recovery of oil from oil shales and the natural primary migration of hydrocarbons are closely related processes that have received renewed interests in recent years because of the ever tightening supply of conventional hydrocarbons and the growing production of hydrocarbons from low permeability tight rocks. Quantitative models for conversion of kerogen into oil and gas and the timing of hydrocarbon generation have been well documented. However, lack of consensus about the kinetics of hydrocarbon formation in source rocks, expulsion timing and how the resulting hydrocarbons escape from or are retained in the source rocks motivates further investigation. In particular, many mechanisms for the transport of hydrocarbons from the source rocks in which they are generated into adjacent rocks with higher permeabilities and smaller capillary entry pressures have been proposed, and a better understanding of this complex process (primary migration) is needed. To characterize these processes it is imperative to use the latest technological advances. In this study, it is shown how insights into hydrocarbon migration in source rocks can be obtained by using sequential high resolution synchrotron X-ray tomography. Three-dimensional (3D) images of several immature "shale" samples were constructed at resolutions close to 5 micrometers. This is sufficient to resolve the source rock structure down to the grain level, but very fine grained silt particles, clay particles and colloids cannot be resolved. Samples used in this investigation came from the R-8 unit in the upper part of the Green River Shale, which is organic rich, varved, lacustrine marl formed in Eocene Lake Uinta, United States of America. One Green River Shale sample was heated in-situ up to 400{\deg}C as X-ray tomography images were recorded. The other samples were scanned before and after heating at 400{\deg}C. During the heating phase, the organic matter was decomposed, and gas was released. Gas expulsion from the low permeability shales was coupled with formation of microcracks. The main technical difficulty was numerical extraction of microcracks that have apertures in the 5 to 30 micrometer range (with 5 micrometers being the resolution limit) from a large 3D volume of X-ray attenuation data. The main goal of the work presented here is to develop a methodology to process these 3D data and image the cracks. This methodology is based on several levels of spatial filtering and automatic recognition of connected domains. Supportive petrographic and thermogravimetric data were an important complement to this study. An investigation of the strain field using two-dimensional image correlation analyses was also performed. As one application of the four-dimensional (4D, space + time) microtomography and the developed workflow, we show that fluid generation was accompanied by crack formation. Under different conditions, in the subsurface, this might provide paths for primary migration.
Ultrahigh resolution 3D imaging and characterisation of nanoscale pore structure in shales and its control on gas transport

Abstract:&#160;Cost-effective and environmentally sensitive shale gas production requires detailed knowledge of the petrophysical characteristics of the shale from which the gas is extracted. Parameters such as the kerogen fraction, pore size distributions, porosity, permeability, the frackability of the rock and the degree to which natural fracturing already occurs are required in order to be able to estimate potential gas reserves and how easily it can be extracted. Innovative imaging techniques, including Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM) and Nanoscale X-Ray Tomography (nano-CT), can be used to characterise the microstructural properties of shale. Here we report using FIB-SEM serial sectioning and nano-CT on approximately cubic samples of side length about 25 &#181;m. The resolution of the FIB-SEM scanning is approximately 20 nm, while that of the nano-CT is about 50 nm, providing between 125 and 1953 million voxels per scan. These ultra-high resolution techniques have been shown to be effective methods for the analysis and imaging of shale microstructure. Each technique can provide data over a different and separate range of scales, and with different resolutions. Results analysed so far indicate that pores which seem to be unconnected when imaged on a micrometre scale by micro-CT scanning, are connected by thin pathways when imaged at these higher resolutions. This nano-scale connectivity is responsible for the small but non-zero permeability of gas shales to gas flow, which is typically measured in the range 5 nD &#8211; 200 nD. The volume, size, aspect ratios, surface area to volume ratio and orientations have all been calculated from the scanned data as a function of scale. These data indicate an extremely complex, heterogeneous, anisotropic and multimodal pore nanostructure and microstructure for the shales, with structure at all scales contributing to both gas storage and gas flow. Further work analysing the connectivity of the microscale and nanoscale pore spaces within the rock is underway. We believe that the combination of nano-CT with FIB-SEM on the same sample has the potential for providing an enhanced understanding of shale microstructure, which is necessary for modelling elastic behaviour, gas storage, gas desorption and gas flow in gas shales.Keywords: Gas shale, FIB-SEM, nano-CT, porosity, permeability, Kerogen, pore volume, size distribution, pore aspect ratio and surface area to pore volume.
MULTI-SCALE AND ANISOTROPIC CHARACTERIZATION OF COAL STRUCTURE BASED ON SEM IMAGE ANALYSIS

Abstract:Non-transparency of microstructures for the porous media has long been the obstacle for a deep understanding of the mechanisms of rock damage and coal and rock outbursts at depth.As an attempt,a methodology based on wavelet multi-resolution analysis(MRA) for visualization and multiscale-anisotropic-detailed characterization of pore space for complex porous media at meso-and microscopic scales is proposed.In order to validate the proposed approach,observations are made on the six groups of coal rock specimens by using scanning electron microscope(SEM),sampled from six different underground mining districts;the integrated image processing schemes are conducted for the so called "sub-pixel" scale analysis of the resulting SEM images,including multi-scale wavelet transform,image segmentation and reconstruction.The detail sub-bands coefficients of the wavelet transform are used to reconstruct images of the horizontal,vertical and diagonal dominant micropores of the microporous matrix.In addition,the probability density distribution of the characteristic length for the pore throat and cavity,the porosity and fractal dimensions for the pores at multiple scales are calculated.The segmented macro-fractures by the MRA are at micron scale while the micro-pores are at nano-scale.The macro-fractures of all the specimens have much larger fractal dimension value than that of the micro-pores.The profiles of the pore throat distribution for all the specimens take on the shape of single peak,and the peak value is the measure of the drag forces for the fluid transport,whereas the curves of the pore cavity take on the shapes of single or multiple peaks,and the maximal peak value represents the storage capacity for the fluids.The obtained results validate the applicability of the microscopic image based approach for characterization of the geometrical boundary and structural features of fractured rocks,which will certainly contribute to a deep understanding of the influences of the complex pore structures on the nonlinear behaviour of the rock masses at depth.

Abstract:In unconventional petroleum reservoirs, such as shale gas, shale oil, tight oil, and tight gas reservoirs, the microscopic pore structure, namely, the size, geometry, distribution, and interconnected relations of the pores and throats of a shale rock, directly affects the porosity, storage, and permeability. Studies related to the microscopic pore structure of shale are considered important for evaluating shale resources and for elucidating their distribution characteristics; additionally, these studies aim to improve the productivity and recovery ratio of both oil and gas. Therefore, methods that can accurately characterize the microscopic pore structure of shale have received considerable attention. In this study, we used the electrodeposition method to fill the interconnected pores of a rock sheet with metal and then used selective dissolution of the rock portion of the rock sheet to obtain the metal complex of the pore-throat structure. The structure and morphology of the obtained metal complex, which represents the microscopic pore structure of the shale, are characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). By combining electrochemical deposition and SEM images, we could directly observe the three-dimensional microstructure of the shale at a scale smaller than 50 nm with a large observation area. Additionally, the surface areas of the connected pores and throats of the shale were calculated.
Multi-scale Multi-Dimensional Characterization of Clay-Hosted Pore Networks of Shale Using FIBSEM, TEM, and X-ray Micro-Tomography: Implications for Methane Storage and Migration

Abstract:Gas shales contain a variety of clay-rich materials with multifarious pore networks. Clay-hosted porosity is an essential component and considered to play a crucial role in establishing the original hydrocarbon molecules in place and transport characteristics of the shale gas reservoir. To better understand the petrophysical basis of gas storage and migration mechanisms, we aim to visualize and quantify the nature of the clay-hosted pore networks and across micrometer and nanometer length scales. Core and outcrop samples are provided of various clay-rich shales (Qiongzhusi, Longmaxi, Wufeng, and Shihezi Formation), which are characterized using a synergistic multi-scale multi-dimensional workflow by FIBSEM, TEM, and X-ray micro-tomography (mCT). Clay-hosted pores are observed in three significant modes of occurrence depending on imaging of pores at the 2D-FIBSEM/TEM level. The first pore type is found between clay domains in clay matrix as interparticle pore, with pore size smaller than 1 mu m, and includes six subtypes: type a, type b, type c, type d, type e, and type f. The second associated with the admixture belongs to inter-aggregate pore that can be further sub-divided into three classes: type g (organic-clay), type h (pyrite-clay), and type I (organic-pyrite-clay), with pore size above 50 up to 500 nm. The third associated with the clay nanoplatelets is intraparticle pore. The upper pore-size range of such pores is generally less than 1 nm, with most pores being less than 0.4 nm. Using 3D-mCT and 3D-FIBSEM, the data sets were reconstructed, clay structures were segmented and visualized, revealing the well-connected clayhosted pore networks within the heterogeneous clay matrix and quantitatively computing pore size, pore volume, and porosity at micrometer and nanometer scales. These visual results highlight the significance of clayhosted pore networks in shale gas reservoirs because they are the dominant controls on the petrophysical properties. The application of this workflow to worldwide clay-rich shale deposits will allow essential insights into estimating porosity and permeability of shale formations and provide insight to the storage and transport of hydrocarbon molecules from shale matrix to predict total gas resources.

Abstract:A systematic investigation of multiscale pore structure in organic-rich shale by means of the combination of various imaging techniques is presented, including the state-of-the-art Helium-Ion-Microscope (HIM). The study achieves insight into the major features at each scale and suggests the affordable techniques for specific objectives from the aspects of resolution, dimension, and cost. The pores, which appear to be isolated, are connected by smaller pores resolved by higher-resolution imaging. This observation provides valuable information, from the microscopic perspective of pore structure, for understanding how gas accumulates and transports from where it is generated. A comprehensive workflow is proposed based on the characteristics acquired from the multiscale pore structure analysis to simulate the gas transport process. The simulations are completed with three levels: the microscopic mechanisms should be taken into consideration at level I; the spatial distribution features of organic matter, inorganic matter, and macropores constitute the major issue at level II; and the microfracture orientation and topological structure are dominant factors at level III. The results of apparent permeability from simulations agree well with the values acquired from experiments. By means of the workflow, the impact of various gas transport mechanisms at different scales can be investigated more individually and precisely than conventional experiments.

Abstract:With improvements of imaging techniques and computational power, Digital Rock Physics (DRP) has been increasingly used to determine transport and elastic properties of reservoir core plugs. Since numerical computations highly rely on accurate 3D representations of the porous microstructure of the rocks, the imaging technique and the scale at which the imaging is performed is a critical parameter. In this paper, we introduce a multiscale imaging workflow that uses both micro-X-ray tomography (micro-XCT) and focused ion beam combined with scanning electron microscope (FIB–SEM) to characterize a dolomite rock from the microscale to the nanoscale. This allows for the accurate capture of the different heterogeneities that exist in the carbonate (texture, mineralogy, pore size). The reconstructed microporous structures were then used to successfully predict elastic and permeability properties of selected carbonate.

In Situ Characterization of Three-Phase Flow in Mixed-Wet Porous Media Using Synchrotron Imaging

Abstract:We use fast synchrotron X-ray microtomography to understand three-phase flow in mixed-wet porous media to design either enhanced permeability or capillary trapping. The dynamics of these phenomena are of key importance in subsurface hydrology, carbon dioxide storage, oil recovery, food and drug manufacturing, and chemical reactors. We study the dynamics of a water-gas-water injection sequence in a mixed-wet carbonate rock. During the initial waterflooding, water displaced oil from pores of all size, indicating a mixed-wet system with local contact angles both above and below90 degrees. When gas was injected, gas displaced oil preferentially with negligible displacement of water. This behavior is explained in terms of the gas pressure needed for invasion. Overall, gas behaved as the most nonwetting phase with oil as the most wetting phase; however, pores of all size were occupied by oil, water, and gas, as a signature of mixed-wet media. Thick oil wetting layers were observed, which increased oil connectivity and facilitated its flow during gas injection. A chase waterflooding resulted in additional oil flow, while gas was trapped by oil and water. Furthermore, we quantified the evolution of the surface areas and both Gaussian and the total curvature, from which capillary pressure could be estimated. These quantities are related to the Minkowski functionals which quantify the degree of connectivity and trapping. The combination of water and gas injection, under mixed-wet immiscible conditions, leads to both favorable oil flow and significant trapping of gas, which is advantageous for storage applications.

Abstract:Introduction: Shale oil and gas reservoirs contain a variety of inorganic and organic pores that differ significantly from conventional reservoirs, making traditional experiments ineffective. Instead, the pore-scale imaging and modeling method, regarded as a novel and practical approach, is proposed to characterize shale microstructure and petrophysical properties. Therefore, it is of great significance to accurately reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of the porous medium, that is, the digital rock. However, microstructural images of shale at high-resolution, obtained through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are constrained in the two-dimensional (2D) scale. Method: In this work, a novel iterative algorithm to reconstruct 3D multi-phase shale digital rock from a 2D image using multi-point statistics has been proposed. A multi-grid data template was used to capture the conditional probabilities and data events. The novelty of this work stems from an accurate representation of different types of pores and the mineral characteristics of shale rock from 2D images. Result: A series of simulations were conducted to reconstruct 2D shale digital rock from a 2D segmented training image, 3D shale digital rock from a 2D segmented training image, a 2D gray training image to reconstruct 2D shale digital rock, and a 2D gray training image to reconstruct 3D shale digital rock. Discussion: To corroborate the accuracy of the reconstructed digital rock and evaluate the reliability of the proposed algorithm, we compared the construction image with the training image with the two-point correlation function, geometry, morphological topology structure, and flow characteristics. The reconstruction accuracy indicates that the proposed algorithm can replicate the higher-order statistical information of the training image.

Abstract:In shale oil reservoirs, nano-scale pores and micro-scale fractures serve as the primary fluid storage and migration space, while the associated flow mechanism remains vague and is hard to understand. In this research, a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the shale core and micro-pore structure description technique is established; digital core technology for shale reservoirs was developed using X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM). Microscopic oil–water two-phase flow is mimicked using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), a well-acknowledged approach to exploring nanoconfined fluid dynamics. In addition, coupled with digital cores, the flow characteristics of shale reservoirs are characterized. The total porosities of bedding fractures in shale and lamellar shale are 2.042% and 1.085%, respectively. The single-phase oil flow inside bedding fractures follows Darcy's linear flow principle. This work can deepen the understanding of the microscopic flow characteristics of continental shale reservoirs and provide a reference for similar problems that may be encountered.

Abstract:The microstructure of oil sand samples extracted at a depth of 75 m from the estuarine Middle McMurray formation (Alberta, Canada) has been investigated by using high resolution 3D X-Ray microtomography ($\mu$CT) and Cryo Scanning Electron Microscopy (CryoSEM). $\mu$CT images evidenced some dense areas composed of highly angular grains surrounded by fluids that are separated by larger pores full of gas. 3D Image analysis provided in dense areas porosity values compatible with in-situ log data and macroscopic laboratory determinations, showing that they are representative of intact states. $\mu$CT hence provided some information on the morphology of the cracks and disturbance created by gas expansion. The CryoSEM technique, in which the sample is freeze fractured within the SEM chamber prior to observation, provided pictures in which the (frozen) bitumen clearly appears between the sand grains. No evidence of the existence of a thin connate water layer between grains and the bitumen, frequently mentioned in the literature, has been obtained. Bitumen appears to strongly adhere to the grains, with some grains completely being coated. The curved shape of some bitumen menisci suggests a bitumen wet behaviour.

Abstract:Pore structures is a very critical parameter that affects the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of the reservoir rock. Pore shapes and pore size distributions can impact the transport and storage capacity of the reservoir rocks. This necessitates the adequate knowledge of the pore structures of the rocks. In this paper, we characterized and quantified the pore structures of rock samples from the Bakken Formation which is a typical unconventional shale oil reservoir. Samples of Upper and Middle Bakken were collected and studied based on the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images. First, the threshold of each image was determined from overflow criteria and then the related pores were extracted from the corresponding image. In the next step, the pore microstructures such as pore size, pore shape distributions of different samples were calculated and compared. Finally, we used fractal theory to describe the pore structures of the shale formation and investigated the relationship between fractal dimension and pore structures. The results showed that pores with various sizes and shapes were widely distributed in the shale samples. Compared with samples from Middle Bakken, samples from Upper Bakken Formation with higher clay content showed higher fractal dimension and more complex pore structures. Finally, the fractal dimension was used to quantify the impact of the magnification on the pore structures.

Abstract:The pore-fracture network within shale significantly controls the microscopic storage of hydrocarbons. The Paleogene lacustrine Shahejie Formation of Bohai Bay Basin represents an outstanding lower-thermal-maturity example of a mineral matrix pore-fracture system. Recent studies have shown that most pores in Shahejie shale detectable by high-resolution electron microscopy are associated with an inorganic mineral matrix instead of organics. However, because of the lack of both qualitative and quantitative data on nanometer to micrometer scales, such microstructures have limited the ability to predict hydrocarbon storage feature. Representative Shahejie shale samples come from the Well F39X1 to investigate the pore-fracture network using a synergistic multi-scale multi-dimensional workflow by field emission scanning electron microscopy, multi-scale CT, and FIBSEM. Investigations in both 2D and 3D and across cm–mm−μm–nm length scales indicate heterogeneity at every scale and dimensions. From 2D SEM images, clay flake-hosted interparticle pores, rigid grain-hosted interparticle pores, intraparticle dissolution pores, grain-rim microfractures, intragranular microfractures, and matrix microfractures are identified with varying numbers, sizes, and geometries. Large field-of-view 2D scanning electron microscopy images were also used to quantitatively and statistically study the abundance and size of pores and fractures. Using multi-scale CT techniques, pores and fractures from centimeter to nanometer scales were observed with preferential propagation along the mineral aggregate-rich laminations, resulting in an interconnected pore-fracture network. Using FIBSEM, the mineral/organic particles and their related pore phases were visualized, quantitatively computing the pore size and abundance. The visual results suggest that the mineral matrix pore-fracture network in lacustrine Shahejie Formation plays a key role as the liquid hydrocarbon storage space. The application of these techniques to the lower-thermal-maturity shale reservoirs provides important insights into estimating and visualizing rock microstructural heterogeneity and preliminarily establishing a liquid hydrocarbon microscopic storage model.
