Abstract:Pyrite is one of the most widely distributed sulfides in nature belonging to the isometric system with NaCl-type derivative structure. Nano-micron pyrites exist in many types of geological bodies, such as ancient sedimentary rocks, modern sediments, modern submarine hydrothermal vents and various mineral deposits. Nano-micron pyrites have one-dimensional (1-D) crystal whisker, two-dimensional (2-D) plate and flake, three-dimensional (3-D) particle and spheroid, and other different aggregates. Meanwhile, similar phenomena have been found in the experimental pyrite products. The various morphologies of nano-micron pyrite serve as the most direct-viewing evidence to identify the changes of the geological environment where the pyrites are located. The difference in physical and chemical properties of pyrite caused by different morphologies is valuable for the development and utilization of mineral materials. This work provides an overview of research results relating to the morphology evolution of nano-micron pyrites both in nature and experiments. The factors that affect the morphologies and their evolution of nano-micron pyrite are diversified and complex. At present, the decisive factor in controlling isometric pyrite having multiple dimensional morphologies and the extent of each factor are significant research objects that are still unclear. With the typical multi-morphology pyrite growth examples, a good understanding of the thermodynamics and kinetics process of nano-micron mineral growth will be obtained with modern observation technologies, experimental methods, and crystallographic calculations. It will help to establish theories on the multi-morphology growth and evolution of isometric minerals on the nano-micron scale. These achievements will be significant for improving new theories on the crystallization and growth of nano-micron minerals.
