Abstract:Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) in which permittivity (ε) and/or permeability (μ) are zero possess unprecedented abilities to manipulate the electromagnetic (EM) waves. The applications of ZIMs include EM energy control in a very narrow waveguide, wave front control, cloaking and transmission control by defects, etc.. For isotropic (anisotropic) ZIMs, both components (only one component) of the ε or μ tensor are (is) zero. Up to now, isotropic (anisotropic) ZIMs have been realized by a periodic array of circular (elliptical)dielectric cylinders [1, 2]. In microwave regime the 2D transmission lines (TLs) loaded with lumped elements can realize various distributions of ε or μ, which provide a convenient platform to design and realize ZIMs. Based on 2D TL structures, we have experimentally realized isotropic ZIMs [3], anisotropic ZIMs [4] and inhomogeneous anisotropic ZIMs. Through these ZIMs, the field patterns and energy flux of EM waves are tailored.
