Abstract:With the expansion and deepening of scientific research, dual-functional or multifunctional materials are urgently needed to replace those for single application. Herein, a fluorescence sensing system based on an In(III)-organic complex with in situ Lewis acid sites has been constructed, exhibiting high sensitivity for the detection of Fe(III) ions with a low detection limit of 3.95 μM and a short response time of within 10 s. It is noteworthy that the quenched fluorescence of the Fe(III)-incorporated sample could be reopened linearly with an increase of alkalinity, followed by the reactivation of its functionality to identify Fe(III) ions, forming an alternate detection cycle for Fe(III) and pH with off-on-off fluorescent switch characteristics. Considering its unique molecular recognition capability, an advanced three-input (Fe(III), EDTA, and OH-) and two-output (B440 and G489) Boolean logic operation comprising BUFF, NOT, OR, and AND logic gates was integrated, possessing potential applications in intelligent multianalyte sensing systems.

Abstract:A mechanism is developed to construct a logic system by employing DNA/gold nanoparticle (AuNP) conjugates as a basic work unit, utilizing a fluorescent beacon probe to detect output signals. To implement the logic circuit, a self-assembly DNA structure is attached onto nanoparticles to form the fluorescent beacon. Moreover, assisted by regulation of multilevel strand displacement, cascaded logic gates are achieved. The computing results are detected by methods using fluorescent signals, gel electrophoresis and transmission electron microscope (TEM). This work is expected to demonstrate the feasibility of the cascaded logic system based on fluorescent nanoparticle beacons, suggesting applications in DNA computation and biotechnology.

Abstract:A simple and efficient chemosensor 1 was synthesized by reacting thiosernicarbazide with 1-naphthaldehyde. It was found that the sensor is highly selective toward fluoride anions in both UV-vis and fluorescence channels in DMSO solution. Especially, the spectral responses of the sensor along with a visible color change can be switched back and forth by successively adding F- and HSO4- anions into the DMSO solution, which may be represented by a complementary "IMPLICATION/INHIBIT" logic gate at molecular level employing both the ions as the chemical inputs. Based on such a reversible and reproducible sensing system, we designed a molecular-scale sequential memory unit displaying "Writing-Reading-Erasing-Reading" and "Multi-write" functions in the form of binary logic. Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate that the emission wavelength and intensity of silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) can be facilely tuned by the configuration transformation from the adsorption of Ag NCs to the graphene oxide (GO) surface to the desorption of Ag NCs from GO. Bicolor Ag NCs tethering the complementary sequence of influenza A virus genes are prepared, named green-emitting G-Ag NCs-CH5N1 (530 nm) and red-emitting R-Ag NCs-CH1N1 (589 nm). As for the high affinity of the complementary fragment of genes to GO, the adsorption of Ag NCs to GO leads to the formation of G-Ag NCs-CH5N1/GO and R-Ag NCs-CH1N1/GO nanocomposites, leading to fluorescent quenching due to energy transfer. By conjugating complementary sequences as capturing probes for targets, the formation of genes/Ag NC duplex-stranded structures results in the desorption of Ag NCs from GO, activating the fluorescence signal. More interestingly, compared with sole single-stranded DNA-templated fluorescent Ag NCs (ssDNA-Ag NCs), the activatable emission wavelength of the G-Ag NCs-CH5N1/H5N1 complex exhibits a notable red shift (555 nm) with a 49% recovery rate, while that of the R-Ag NCs-CH1N1/H1N1 complex shows a distinct blue shift (569 nm) with a 200% recovery rate. Via target-responsive configuration transformation of Ag NCs/GO hybrid materials, the emission wavelength and intensity of Ag NCs are effectively regulated. Based on the output changes according to different input combinations, novel dual-channel logic gates for multiplex simultaneous detection are developed by using the tunable color and intensity of ssDNA-Ag NCs. Our observation may open a new path for multiplex analysis in a facile and rapid way combining the logic gate strategy.

Abstract:Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are kinds of rising-star fluorescence nanomaterials, but their properties and applications are hindered by the multi-step synthesis and purification routes as well as lacks of desired supprting substrates. In order to strengthen the optical performance and working efficience, the synthesis and applications of AuNCs are suggested to be merged together on emerging substrates. Herein, glutathione-modified hydrophilic rice papers are incubated in chloroauric acid aqueous solutions and the oxidation-reduction reaction between glutathione and Au ions enables the in-situ formation of fluorescent AuNCs on the solid fibres of rice papers. The in-situ growth of fluoresence AuNCs on rice papers resluted in eye-cataching fluorescence tracks, just like Chinese conventional calligraphy, and thus the fluoresence calligraphy is defined in this work. The entire operation including synthesis and signal responses is extremely simple, rapid, and repeatable. Moreover, the diversities of additive chemical reagents in those studied rice papers resulted in responsive fluorescence calligraphy, and those as-synthetic AuNCs materials exhibited high reliabilities and optical stabilities. Significantly, with integration of synchronous formation and applications of Au nanoclusters on hydrophilic paper substrates, high-performance logical gates and information encryption systems are constructed, remarkably facilitating the progresses of molecular sensing and important information transmission.

Abstract:A novel fluorescent label-free "turn-on" NAD(+) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) biosensing strategy is proposed by fully exploiting ligation triggered Nanocluster Beacon (NCB). In the presence of the target, the split NCB was brought to intact, which brought the C-rich sequence and enhancer sequence in close proximity resulting in the lightening of dark DNA/AgNCs ("On" mode). Further application was presented for logic gate operation and aptasensor construction. The feasibility was investigated by Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fluorescence, lifetime and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) etc. The strategy displayed good performance in the detection of NAD(+) and ATP, with the detection limit of 0.002nM and 0.001mM, the linear range of 10-1000nM and 0.003-0.01mM, respectively. Due to the DNA/AgNCs as fluorescence reporter, the completely label-free fluorescent strategy boasts the features of simplicity and low cost, and showing little reliance on the sensing environment. Meanwhile, the regulation by overhang G-rich sequence not relying on Förster energy transfer quenching manifests the high signal-to-background ratios (S/B ratios). This method not only provided a simple, economical and reliable fluorescent NAD(+) assay but also explored a flexible G-rich sequence regulated NCB probe for the fluorescent biosensors. Furthermore, this sensing mode was expanded to the application of a logic gate design, which exhibited a high performance for not only versatile biosensors construction but also for molecular computing application.

Abstract:Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have been recognized as an emerging category of inorganic–organic hybrid luminescent materials owing to their ultrasmall size, good biocompatibility, and especially the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. Some works have been reported about the AIE property of AuNCs; however, the mechanism is still indistinct. In the present work, we studied the coassembly behavior of thiobarbituric acid-modified AuNCs (TBA-AuNCs) with Zn<sup>2+</sup>. The coassembly system could not only enhance the emission of AuNCs but also induce the gelation along with the morphology transformation from nanofibers to micron-sized bowknot-like aggregates. Various methods were used to characterize the properties of a hydrogel such as photoluminescent (PL) spectra, morphology, lifetime, and intermolecular interaction. Significantly, time-/temperature-dependent PL spectra as well as morphological evolution monitoring were implemented to analyze the structure–emission property relationship of TBA-AuNCs assembly systems. It is verified that the π–π stacking of ligands, ligand-to-metal charge transition (LMCT), and the orderliness degree of aggregates contribute uniquely to the emission energy/intensity of TBA-AuNCs, which is significant for the comprehension of the AIE nature of nanoclusters. Besides, the gelation and photoluminescence of TBA-AuNCs are sensitive to heating and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na), making the hydrogels promising candidates as smart luminescent switches. Abstract:Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) have appeared as an essential alternative to traditional quantum dots and fluorescent molecules for the development of intelligent stimuli-responsive photoluminescence (PL), but the low PL emission of Au NCs restricts their broad applications. Herein, we reported a simple yet effective strategy for preparing Au NCs with high PL by ligands engineering of 4-hydroxy-2-mercapto-6-methylpyrimidine (MTU) and L-Arginine (Arg). Owing to the rigidified shell and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) effects, it was found that the assembly of Arg ligand on MTU-protected Au NCs (Arg/MTU-Au NCs) led to a significantly enhanced PL in the alkaline solution up to 30 times. Moreover, utilizing the tunable LMCT, the Arg/MTU-Au NCs displayed rapid responses to multi-type ionic interaction in a reversible manner, such as H+/OH− and Cu2+/glutathione (GSH) pairs. Inspired by these intriguing ions-responsive LMCT and the associated switchable PL emission, the Arg/MTU-Au NCs were successfully used as excellent stimuli-responsive PL probes for intriguing deceptive information encryption and biosensing as well. This work would provide new insight into regulating the PL emission of Au NCs by ligands engineering and advance their potential applications in information encryption and bioassay.

Abstract:Ultrasmall gold nanoclusters (NCs) have been engineered as a new kind of functional material due to their excellent photoluminescence properties. However, the synthesis of highly luminescent water-soluble nanoclusters with near-infrared (NIR) emission remains limited. Herein, we developed a pH-regulated strategy to facilitate the construction of self-assemblies with enhanced luminescence based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) strategy. Using 2-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) as reductant and stabilizer, the original weakly luminescent AuNCs exhibited intense emission by adjusting pH controllably. The formation of compact organized nanostructures could effectively restrict the rotation and vibration of capping ligands by non-covalent interactions, which reduced the nonradiative relaxation from excited states and finally improved the emission properties of AuNCs. Moreover, the assemblies possess many intriguing features including bright NIR luminescence and excellent biocompatibility, which could be used as luminous probes in biological molecules sensing (tyrosinase (TYR) and dopamine (DA)) and promising candidates for cell imaging. This study provides a simple and feasible strategy for developing metal NCs-based smart optical materials in the field of bioscience.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) possess remarkable optical properties and electrical conductivity, making them highly relevant in various fields such as medical diagnoses, biological imaging, and electronic sensors. However, the existing methods for modulating the optical properties of AuNPs are often under limitations such as a high cost, the complexity of detection, a narrow range of application settings, and irreversibility. In this study, we propose a novel approach to address these challenges by constructing a reversible electrochemical switch. The switch (ITO-OMAD) involves covalently linking nitroxide radicals and AuNPs (AuNPs-NO•), followed by tethering this nanocomposite to a siloxane-derived indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. By simply electrochemically oxidizing/reducing the nitroxide units, one is able to reversibly modulate the optical properties of AuNPs at will. The surface morphology and structure of the as-prepared ITO-OMAD electrode were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). SEM imaging confirmed the successful anchoring of AuNPs on the ITO electrode. Electrochemical tests performed in the three-electrode system demonstrated that the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of AuNPs can be reversibly regulated by alternatively imposing ± 0.5V (vs. Ag/AgCl) to the modified electrode. The development of this electrochemical switch presents a novel approach to effectively control the optical properties of AuNPs. The further exploration and utilization of this reversible electrochemical switch could significantly enhance the versatility and practicality of AuNPs in numerous applications.

Abstract:The fabricated novel self‐assembly enhanced aggregation‐induced emission strategy endows the gold nanoclusters with multiple emissive modes of wide‐range tunable excitation wavelength‐dependent emission, red‐shifted mechanochromic luminescence, and excitation wavelength‐independent emission property, which paves the new way for promising applications in optoelectronic devices and optical anti‐counterfeiting fields. Metal nanoclusters with aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) characteristics are potential nanomaterial candidates for a wide array of advanced optical applications. In this study, a novel self‐assembly enhanced AIE strategy utilizing 6‐thioguanine (TG)‐protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) is fabricated with dual‐stimuli responsive modes of excitation wavelength‐dependent (Ex‐De) emission and mechanochromic properties. The sheetlike structures of AuNCs self‐assembly (AuNC sheets) with typical AIE characteristics are generated in bad solvent owing to the intermolecular hydrogen‐bonds interaction among guanine‐rich moieties of TG ligand. Interestingly, the maximum emission peaks of AuNC sheets are red‐shifted with the increased excitation wavelengths, indicating Ex‐De emission behavior. This phenomenon enables the achievement of wide‐range tunable photoluminescence (PL). In addition, the emission peak of AuNC sheets powders before and after grinding displays the bathochromic shift of 110 nm. The "off–on" switch of Ex‐De emission behavior in AuNC sheets can be manipulated by changing mechanical pressure. It is speculated that the tunable PL behavior of AuNC sheets originates from multiple excited states due to the existence of different Au(I)···Au(I) distances. The self‐assembly‐driven AIE strategy of AuNCs with stimuli‐responsive allochroic modes will facilitate the recording of rewritable information, opening up a new avenue for high‐throughput and multi‐dimensional optical security.

Abstract:In this work, two DNA nanodevices were constructed utilizing a DNA strand displacement reaction. With the assistance of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and gold nanorods (AuNRs), the autonomous reactions can be reflected from the aggregation states of nanoparticles. By sequence design and the two non-overlapping double hump-like UV-vis spectral peaks of AuNPs and AuNRs, two logic gates with multiple inputs and outputs were successfully run with expected outcomes. This method not only shows how to achieve computing with multiple logic calculations but also has great potential for multiple targets detection.

Abstract:DNA-based logic gates promote the development of molecular computing and show enormous potential in the fields of nanotechnology and biotechnology. Dumbbell oligonucleotides (DNA) with poly-thymine (poly-T) loops and a nicked random double strand have been demonstrated to be an efficient template for the formation of fluorescent copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) in our previous work. Herein, a new platform technology is presented with which to construct molecular logic gates by employing CuNCs probe as a basic output generator, coupling of functional nucleases as the inputs. Two dumbbell DNAs are used with the difference in stem length (8 bp and 16 bp, respectively). The degradation of DNA templates can be tuned by various nucleic acid enzymes, single-stranded nuclease (S1), double-stranded specific nuclease (DSN), E. coli DNA ligase, exonucleases I and III. Briefly, S1 can digest both DNA templates, while the cleavage ability of DSN will be resistant by the short stem of SS-DNA (short-stem DNA). Exonuclease I and III can degrade these two nicked DNA templates, which are inhibited due to the ligation of E. coli DNA ligase. With this novel strategy, a set of logic gates is successfully constructed at the molecular level, including "YES", "PASS 0", "OR", "INHIBIT", which take the advantages of no label, easy operation, fast speed, high efficiency and low cost. Furthermore, S1 nuclease, as the biomarker of numerous carcinogens, is selectively detected in the range of 0.05-50 U/mL with the detection limit of 0.005 U/mL (1 x10(-6) U) based on this platform. Abstract:The recent advance in logic gate computing and operation based on the multiple luminescence response and chemical sensing for lanthanide functionalized MOF hybrid system is summarized. Firstly, multi-color luminescence and subsequently the multiple luminescence response based on them are described. Secondly, the basic conception for logic gate operation and the virtues of lanthanide-based hybrid materials are simply introduced. Thirdly, some reports on logic gate operation using pure lanthanide MOFs are given, which is not the emphasis of this review. Afterwards, the detailed on logic gate operations of lanthanide functionalized MOFs hybrid materials is discussed. Moreover, the input and output of logic gate based on lanthanide functionalized MOFs hybrid materials can be further applied to correlate the luminescence responsive signals and the concentration of different analytes, which achieves the practical luminescent detection of analytes. Finally, the conclusion and prospect are given for this topic.

Abstract:We report supramolecular AND logic gates based on host-guest complexation between acid-labile acyclic cucurbit[n]uril（CB[n]） molecular container and Na Cl O-responsive dye. Supramolecular AND logic gate is turned on due to acid-triggered degradation of molecular container and the release of the dye, followed by Na Cl O-induced fluorescence “switch on” effect of the dye. The reason for AND molecular logic gate is discovered to be the combination of oxidation inhibition and fluorescence “switch off” effect. Supramolecular AND logic gate is confirmed to be operational in live MCF-7 and He La cancer cells.
