Abstract:With the quick development of China, the number of foreign students in China has soared. Teaching Chinese as a second language for foreigners with different backgrounds includes language knowledge, the individual cross-cultural adaptation the Chinese culture spread. Abstract:Traditionally instruction of speech, grammar and reading in Korean has been carried out in separate educational units. Recently learning the Korean language has shifted from merely mastering grammar to focusing on spoken language and the communication skills. This article sheds the light on the need for integrated language learning activities in the Korean language and culture instruction using the 19th textbook Chunhyangjeon by Kim Byeong-ok. This research examines the Korean Texts of Chunhyangjeon – the first textbook introduced in Russia for reading in the medieval Korean language. The main purpose of this study is to better understand how the reading, grammar, and culture aspects of the Korean language were taught in Russia in the 19th century. The analysis revealed the need for integrating the medieval Korean texts into the Korean reading classes. The importance of combining the integrated Korean language instruction with the direct teaching method is also discussed. The author argues for the need to use both the traditional reading learning method and the mixed approach, which includes reading and understanding the writer, the reader, and the cultural context. Finally, this article is trying to provide a rationale for integrating reading and grammar education for higher learning outcomes in developing linguistic abilities and language comprehension.

Abstract:"English Reading" is a professional compulsory course combining theory with practice. This course covers English language knowledge, culture and literature knowledge, national knowledge, cross-cultural communication knowledge, basic knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, etc., aiming to improve students' reading efficiency and ability to obtain main information, especially text appreciation, rhetoric and critical thinking ability. The task of the lesson is to cultivate students' ability of discourse analysis, semantic appreciation, logical thinking, independent thinking and proficient communication, so as to make them become "application-oriented talents” of high-quality and with innovative consciousness and creative ability". The study aimed to correlate the reading comprehension of English linguistic students, then inform some pedagogical implications for the teaching of reading comprehension (Cuc Thi Kim Pham, 2017). Through the data analysis of an authoritative reading test officially organized by the university, the author found that a large proportion of students in sophomore year failed to perform well in the test and did not demonstrate excellent reading skills. The reasons are as follows: firstly, the "teacher-led role" is neglected in reading teaching; Secondly, students ignore discourse analysis in reading; thirdly, the students' understanding of vocabulary is limited to the meaning of completely equivalent Chinese; Fourth: Grammatical awareness is not strong. The author finds out the problems that students have in reading, and combines relevant cases to conduct in-depth discussions on these issues.

Abstract:Abstract:English has been widely used for various purposes and the number of students studying abroad has mushroomed in recent years. This article focuses on the preparation an oversea sojourn for Chinese students to practice English as an international language for intercultural communication. The article also reviews some literature to explain the process of intercultural acculturation and explore how to maximize the culture learning. Finally, the implications suggest that students should prepare for the sojourn in advanced to identify the culture difference, simulation games could also help students to improve their intercultural awareness and facilitate them to be adapted in the new cultural environment.

Abstract:The High School English Curriculum Standard (2017 edition) states that it's crucial to cultivate core competences for students, which includes language ability, learning ability, cultural awareness and thinking quality. There is no doubt that critical thinking, as one of the key components of thinking quality, should be emphasized. However, due to the influence of examination-oriented education and other factors, most teachers tend to pay too much attention to the cultivation of students' language knowledge and language skills, neglecting the cultivation of students' critical thinking ability. The traditional mode of interpretation of language knowledge still dominates in most English reading teaching, teaching design tends to be modeled and text processing is so superficial that students can not understand the discourse deeply. Students in the classroom did not experience a deep thinking level of ability training. Therefore, teachers should think carefully about how to cultivate students’ critical thinking in high school English reading class and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. This paper will take the teaching design of a reading lesson as an example to explore how to cultivate students' critical thinking in high school reading class.

Abstract:Reading a foreign language text is no more considered as a monolingual event: while they are reading,L2 readers have access to their native language all the time.Owing to difficulties in observing the comprehension process,little research has been conducted to determine what role L1 plays in L2 reading.By investigating 21 Chinese college students at three levels of language proficiency through think-aloud protocols(TAP) and retrospective interviews(RI),the present study explores when they turn to their Chinese cognitive resources and how these cognitive activities help them comprehend an English text.The authors of this paper find some distinct patterns in their use of Chinese in English reading comprehension,which may be summarized as: on the one hand,with the increase of their English proficiency,the readers' reliance on Chinese declines,but their use of Chinese is more supportive and effective;on the other hand,the proportion of the strategies used in identifying ideas and constructing meaning reduces while the proportion of the strategies used in cognitive and meta-cognitive monitoring increases.
The Approaches to Teaching English Majors Reading in China: A Case Study of the Comprehensive English Course

Abstract:This paper explores the challenges associated with teaching reading to English majors in China, concentrating on the course designated as "Comprehensive English" or "Intensive Reading". Through historical analysis and critical synthesis, it identifies two significant obstacles in the prevailing teaching approaches. First, a discrepancy is noted between the course's static positioning and the dynamically shifting educational objectives. Second, the prevailing approaches such as TBLT, CBI, and POA are found to be misaligned with the specialized educational needs of English majors, thus requiring modification to align with the academic aspirations of English as a discipline. To address the first challenge, the paper advocates a broader scope for the course, extending beyond mere language skills training to cultivate language proficiency, humanistic literacy, and establishes connections with disciplinary knowledge. For the second challenge, a refined approach is presented, assimilating strengths from both traditional and contemporary approaches, and focusing on critical concepts such as learner autonomy, the flipped classroom model, and Barrett's taxonomy of levels of understanding. This customized approach provides efficacious procedures, aligned with the academic goals of English majors, offering implications for teachers and curriculum designers engaged in English major programs in China.

Abstract:The teaching of critical thinking (CT) has become an important requirement in many English language classrooms at different educational levels, yet little is known about how teachers promote the learning of CT. This article reports on a qualitative study examining the ways in which two university English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers in China attempted to blend CT into their reading classrooms, and the factors that influenced their attempts at CT innovation. In-depth, semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, artefacts, and observation of eight joint discussion sessions between the two participants and the first author were analyzed to explain the participants’ implementation of CT innovation in their intensive reading courses and the influential factors. The findings indicate that the teachers implemented CT innovation in reading instruction through the infusion approach, which means explicitly highlighting CT during the course orientation of their reading courses, while also improving the students’ CT abilities and language competence through reflective and collaborative writing using reading journals. The study also revealed several factors that influenced their attempts at CT innovation. The study sheds light on how teachers can be supported to innovate conventional CT instruction in the reading classroom.

Abstract:The corpora researched in this article consists of compositions written by juniors and seniors from Chinese language and literature Department of Korea Kangnung National University and incorrect sentences written by the South Korea students who have got C certificate and no certificate in Beijing Language and Culture University HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus, and we divided the incorrect sentences including dynamic auxiliary “了” into “unnecessary” and “missing” types with the method of statistics, induction, classification. The former manifests as five kinds of situations such as in adverbial clause which indicates usualness, in time/negative/adverbs of degree adverbial clause, in simply narrative sentence, in predicative object sentence and auxiliary verb sentence. The latter manifests as two kinds of situations, that is, the lack of dynamic auxiliary “了” after the verbs which manifest action or end and after resultant complements or directional complements. The author thinks that negative transference of mother language is one of the major reasons of causing errors, and the lack of Chinese language is the deep reason of errors. So, aiming at the fault of “unnecessary” and “missing” of “了” in the sentences written by the South Korean students, I proposed the teaching methods such as “Object and Picture Illustrating Method”, “Presentation Method” and “Video Method” to make them get language sense easily.

Abstract:Under the background of post critical pedagogy, teachers should pay attachment to the awakening of students’ self-identity consciousness and the cultivation of critical thinking skills. The teaching model of writing course adopted by the author is as follows: firstly, the writing course is equipped with a dedicated reading manual. It is compiled to establish cultural reading materials which include 12 theme reading passages to introduce Chinese and American culture and 12 writing sharing to promote identity thinking based on the relevant theories of Constructivism and Output Hypothesis by using the Flesch Kincaid Readability Test. The teaching process emphasizes the integration of students’ vertical and horizontal knowledge. Referring to the Knowledge Transformation Model of Writing proposed by Bereiter and Scardamalia, the teaching model vertically emphasizes the integration of pre-class cultural reading, in-class skill training, and post-class thinking reinforcement; it horizontally emphasizes on the integration with reading courses, cultural courses, and speculative courses. Overall, the model stresses the cultivation of cross-cultural communication skills. It emphasizes understanding oneself and the other and stimulates students’ writing interest in cultural reading; it emphasizes that the other is for my own use and enrich students’ cultural illustrations in skill training; it emphasizes that I see the world and reflect on my own learning, life, and social hotpots in theme writing. In short, the author actively explores “playing” with learning, “stealing” with learning, and “using” in learning.

Abstract:When translation is used correctly in the reading classroom, students' comprehension of the original text can be improved, their reading speed can be increased, they can learn new information, and their cognitive level can rise, which will improve their ability to think critically and solve problems. Abstract:The Education Ministry requires that English majors at university level in China should not only achieve a good English language competence, but also a fair critical thinking ability in order to develop their intercultural communicative competence. However, various studies reveal that in China the perceived critical thinking competence of language majors at university level is weak. Given the context, this paper aims at proposing an eclectic paradigm to improve learners’ critical thinking competence in English Reading class, by presenting the status quo and the root causes of weak critical thinking ability of EFL students in China, and drawing on various theoretical concepts.
