Abstract:Modern cities form city networks through complex social ties. City network research is widely applied to guide regional planning, infrastructure construction, and resource allocation. China put forward the Yellow River Basin Development Strategy in 2019, but no research has been conducted on regional social connections among cities. Based on the gravity model modified by two-way “time distance” between cities, this is the first study to empirically examine the intensity and structure of the entire city network in the Yellow River basin using the social network analysis method and ArcGIS software. The connection rules of the cross-city transfer of city officials in the basin are also investigated to illustrate the official ties between cities. The results suggest that the intensity of two-way connections between cities is generally low in the Yellow River basin and there is a positive correlation between city network development level and regional economic development level. The development gap between cities on the north and south banks is larger than that between the east and west regions, and some cities in the middle and upper reaches of the river are marginalized in the network. The status of the central cities in the Yellow River basin is distinct, but their connecting and leading abilities are not strong, showing an inverted T-shaped spatial distribution. The subgroups of city networks have strong internal connections, while the connection among subgroups is weak and the development shows a partitioned and fragmented pattern, making it difficult to form linkages among the upper, middle, and lower reaches. The “beaded chain” spatial development strategy can be adopted in the river basin planning, giving priority to strengthening the links within subgroups of cities and among adjacent subgroups, building central city chains, and reinforcing the overall basin management.

Abstract:Based on the urban land-use data about Ningbo,Taizhou and Wenzhou in China Urban Construction Statistics Yearbook(2008),we introduced the concept of Location entropy,Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient to analyze the difference of the spatial distribution of urban land for construction in eastern coastal of Zhejiang province qualitatively as well as quantitatively.The results indicated that,on the one hand,the regional advantages of distribution of the urban construction land for residence tended to be in all county-level cities in eastern coastal of Zhejiang province;the urban land for industry,warehouse and transport tended to be near the core urban area of Ningbo,Taizhou and Wenzhou;in addition,Taizhou's urban land for public facilities and also utilities held an advantage;and the core urban area of Wenzhou's land for street and square,greenbelt and special use shown by the regional advantages were very obvious.On the other hand,the spatial distribution of urban land for construction in degree in eastern coastal of Zhejiang province showed that,the most unbalanced land type was for special use(which Gini coefficient was above 4.0-the international alert line);but the distribution of the land for greenbelt and utilities were relative reasonable;the warehouse land was rather evenly distributed;and land for residence,public facilities,industry,transport,street and square were more evenly distributed.It is concluded that the regional advantages of distribution of the urban construction land and its spatial distribution characteristics reflect the economic,social,demographic and other dimensions of economic performance well.The result can be helpful for the structural optimization of urban land use in coastal area.

Abstract:Most of the cities in China have set the polycentric city as one of the most important planning objectives,thus driving the urban spatial structure development from single center to multi-center.Multi-center structure is projected onto various urban spatial factors such as population,industries,and infrastructures,thereby affecting the sustainable development of the city.In order to reveal the urban multi-center morphological characteristics and its temporal and spatial evolution,this study takes Hangzhou as an example to analyze the spatial structure of morphological elements at different temporal scales by using GIS spatial analysis and profile analysis from various perspectives,such as population density,land price level,transportation facilities layout and nighttime lighting intensity.The spatial pattern of Hangzhou shows the characteristics of "strong center and weak sub-centers";the spatial distributions of all center levels characterized as internally dense and externally sparse,and the development is highly uneven,displaying a strong heterogeneity;the development of sub-centers has a big gap with the target of planning,and the functional links between the sub-center and the main center and among the sub-centers are not strong.The formation multicenter structure mainly relies on planning guidance and government forces rather than the driving of market forces,which causes the current features of the polycentric structure in Hangzhou.
An analysis on the landuse pattern of Shanghai city based on different spatial scales

Abstract:On the londuse background of Shanghai city, the structure properties under different grains of regional landscape are studied by using the methods of landscape ecology, and meanwhile, the variogram make it available to analyze the structure properties under different extents. The paper concludes as follows: (1)The landscape indices differ greatly with different grains. According to this research area, the research area takes on the most typical urban landscape properties with the grain of 20m. (2)The special structure of the landscape indices are basically the same with different extents, yet smaller extent are more sensitive to the change of small scale, vice versa. (3)Different landscape indices have different responses to change of grains and extents. In this paper, LSI, SHDI, SHEI are more sensitive to the change of grain, yet CONTAG and PAFRAC is less sensitive. To the change of extents, SHDI and CONTAG are more sensitive, while PAFRAC is less.(4)Different proceeds have different influence on different landscape indices, so that the special structure of different landscape indices differs a lot. (5)Generally, it shows that the patches along the directions of E0啊45癢 varies more.

Abstract:In the context of globalization,as a new kind of urban spatial and functional form,global city regions are submerged into the global economic network through global and sub-global cities,and are showing increasingly important functions in the global city system.Through the analysis of the globalization process of the Yangtze River Delta and incorporation of cities and towns in this area,the authors point out that this region is the most probable region to become the global city region in China.Then,from the angle of reorganizing and upgrading the spatial and functional structure of the global city region,it is proposed that Shanghai should enhance its function as a global city;Nanjing,Hangzhou,Suzhou and Ningbo should function as sub-global cities;the interrelations among cities should be strengthened;and the regional supporting network of traffic,communication and market etc should be constructed.Thus,the polycentric,network integrative global city region can be established.In addition,the paper suggests several strategic districts to promote the construction of the global city region in the Yangtze River Delta.
Exploring the Spatiotemporal Integration Evolution of the Urban Agglomeration Through City Networks

Abstract:Regional integration is a global trend and an integrated region consists of different cities of different sizes and functions, against which researching their organized structure is an important issue when discussing regional coordinated development. So, we construct the city networks, among which cities and their linkages are regarded as nodes and connections, to explore the spatial characteristics of a region and evaluate the integration level. The Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA) is taken as the study area. For city nodes, this paper first evaluates the cities’ qualities comprehensively based on the multidimensional indicators during the rapid cities’ developmental period from 2005 to 2019. For city linkages, the interactions between different cities are then assessed by the improved gravity model. Then, the city networks consisting of city nodes and their linkages are constructed and analyzed by the social network analysis to deeply understand the orientations and relationships of cities in an integrated region. The results show that the developmental pace of different cities is imbalanced. The overall network of the YRDUA is relatively compact of the city-pair linkages forming the overlapping structure from primary to secondary axes, and different cities have specific functions. However, some small cities do not reach a mutual connection with big cities and face the risk of social resource outflow. In conclusion, attention to the existence of latent hierarchy should be paid to avoid the marginalization of small cities, especially under administrative intervention. The findings can enrich research on cities′ relationship and integration level of the YRDUA, and the specific characteristics of spatial organization paralleling with the leading development of the YRDUA can provide the reference to other regions under the strategy of national regional coordination.

Abstract:Based on the current situation of regional urban system of China,this paper analyzes the evolution of it and then discusses its distribution,distribution density and size.It points out that eastern part of China has more cities and higher distribution density than western and middle part of China,which means that the urban system in eastern part of China is more developed.However,the evolution trend of size distribution in each region of China is of no difference,which means all of them have passed a way of flattering firstly and agglomerating secondly.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the industrial and spatial evolution of Yangtze River Delta from the perspective of Global cityregion,and argues that there has appeared a trend of city "network + hierarchy" by the effects of internal and external factors,which mainly expresses as homogenization,polycentralization of regional development and hierarchy restructure of service center system.The industrial structure is dramatically adjusting, the function division of city region is gradually clear,the difference between the North Wing and South Wing of Yangtze River Delta is increasingly emerging.Totally the pattern of "Along the Road,Along the River and Surround the Bay" will enhance,and the sub-regional development group will run new competition and cooperation.As the Globalizing city,Shanghai is continuing enhance the relation of "centre-hinterland" in Yangtze River Delta,then deeply changing its spatial configuration.
A Quantitative Study on Regional Spatial Structure of Urban System in Contemporary China

Abstract:The authors found that the past quantitative study on regional spatial structure of the Chinese urban system that was based on the random distribution model of Poisson's equation was imperfect,because the contemporary Chinese cities did not fit the character of the random distribution.A gravity model of the cities spatial distribution was formatted by virtue of Newtonian Dynamical Equation to improve the random distribution model,and made a quantitative study of the Chinese cities by taking province-level administrative regions for spatial cells and using the data of 2002.The conclusions are summed up as follows: first,the urban spatial structure of China was composed of 6 mass-clusters of urban accumulative regions,10 strip-clusters of urban accumulative regions and 8 urban groups with metropolis as the core;second,multi-cores and multiclusters urban accumulative regions were mostly distributed in the east provinces of China,sole-core and sole-cluster urban accumulative regions were mostly distributed in mid-China,and large urban groups appeared in the west.The difference of cities development levels was obvious among the three zones,and gradient-phenomenon is very distinct.

Abstract:In recent years, many cities in China have faced profound and complex shrinkage problems, which have required new perspectives and approaches to improve understanding. In this context, this study built a framework to understand city shrinkage based on the regionalization perspective. By simulating land use with spatial relations and conducting a coupling analysis on land use efficiency and accessibility (by strength) based on the study of urban systems, 96 cities along the Yellow River were analyzed under this framework. The research found that cities with significantly lower land use efficiency tend to exhibit lower accessibility (by strength), and city shrinkage in China may be the consequence of the lower de facto accessibility and mismatch between development rights and development potential. The urban system has proven to be helpful in the research, planning, and administration of city shrinkage.

Abstract:Since the early 1950s,China's regional spatial structure has changed dramatically.Although it is still characteristic of the point-axis pattern,the spatial structure of China's regional development has become more networked,and a quasi-networked spatial structure has emerged.With the economic growth and the construction of transportation infrastructure,the spatial restructuring of China's regional economy has been accelerated.Since the mid-1990s,differences of spatial structures in various regions and at various spatial levels have been expanding,as a result of their development.The differences can be summarized as follows: the coastal areas of East China have evolved to an advanced stage of development,with multi-centers and networked spatial structures;the spatial development of Central China is still characteristic of the point-axis pattern,with nuclear concentration and dispersion along the major axes;the spatial structure of the areas in West China is basically characteristic of polarization and nuclear concentration;and the spatial structure of Northeast China is characteristic of the mature point-axis pattern,with some local areas being characteristic of the quasi-networked structure.In addition,the spatial structures of such large metropolitan regions as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region,the Yangtze River Delta Region and the Pearl River Delta Region in East China have become highly polycentric and networked,but their polycentrification and networking are still at quite different levels.

Abstract:Using flows of intercity buses and intercity CRHs(China Railway High-speed) in the Yangtze River Delta as proxies for the intercity passenger traffic flows,this paper analyzes the characters and trends of the polycentric structure of Yangtze River Delta from the perspective of relation intensity and organizational structure of urban node.It is found that the intercity relation network of the North and the South Wing in Yangtze River Delta is relatively independent,and the relations between the North Wing cities and Shanghai is more intensive than those between the South Wing cities and Shanghai.Furthermore,the relations among the North Wing cities are also more intensive than those among the South Wing cities. With regard to the city-region's spatial structure,Shanghai is the primary hub-city; Nanjing,Hangzhou and Ningbo are the secondary hub-cities;and Suzhou,Nantong and Wuxi are possibly the direct hinterland cities or even become included in the commuter zone of Shanghai metropolitan area.It is concluded that the"network + hierarchy"pattern is emerging in the Yangtze River Delta.This means that on the one hand,the polarization of Shanghai is strengthening,and on the other hand,the development of industries and infrastructure is going to be envened out in the whole city-region.

Abstract:The rapid development of urban agglomerations becomes the most important feature of regional spatial structure in China during the period of rapid urbanization. The spatial transfer of economic development strategy in China makes urban agglomerations become the core of provinces and national economy areas. The development of urban agglomerations faces a lot of problems such as the increasing competition power, spatial coordination, spatial direction, and ecological optimizing. This paper analyzes the ten conversions of approach to planning for urban agglomerations and the new planning methods, and summarizes the four types of spatial regulation policy in China, including the pattern of regional coordination, pattern of integrating direction, pattern of competitive power cultivation and pattern of spatial regulation. In the end, the paper introduces the approach to planning and spatial regulation policy of urban agglomerations in Shandong peninsula.

Therefore the development of the urban agglomeration in Chengyu District is still at the starting point with very weak interaction be- tween cities. Attention should be paid to the follow- ing in the future development of the Chengyu District: further efforts should be made to strengthen the economic strength of the core cities and to upgrade the urban function, full use should be made of the driving function of the regional traffic corridor and select and foster cities at the second level in order to promote the perfection of the urban system.

Abstract:This paper reviews current researches on China＇ s regional spatial organizations, empirical and policy studies on China＇ s regional disparity and spatial imbalance of regional development, as well as the research on China＇ s regional divisions of functions and the impact factors influencing regional spatial structure. Considering the limitations existing in current researches, the paper brings forward that the future research on China＇ s regional spatial structure should focus on such aspects as evolution mechanisms of regional spatial structure, especially mechanisms at the micro level, the policy system of optimizing regional spatial structure, and comprehensive empirical studies on impact factors of regional spatial structure and their influences.
An Integrated Perspective Of The Spatial Pattern And Influence Domain Of Cities: The Case Of China

Abstract:Studies on the relationship between cities in a region are carried out from two perspectives: verifying the agglomeration or interaction of cities of different sizes, and identifying central cities and their influence domains. But they both have limitations. The former is only used for descriptive analysis without considering the relationship among cities, while the latter is restricted by the preciseness of identification. Using the spatial autocorrelation analysis, this paper combines the two methods to investigate the regional and local influence of cities of different sizes from the influenced rather than influencing perspective, which also indicates the agglomeration and dispersion of different sized cities. The empirical study on China's 637 cities with urban land sizes proves the integrated approach feasible and effective. Considering the effect of scales on interaction among cities and the hierarchy of urban service functions, we analyze the issue on regional and local scales with the inverse distance and inverse distance squared as the spatial weight matrix. Regardless the own size of investigated cities, as long as most cities are surrounded by large cities, in other words association types of city sizes are mainly HH or LH, it indicates that large cities with powerful regional or local influence are dominant in the region. Otherwise, the radiation effect of central cities is limited and agglomeration of small cities is the typical characteristic of regional urban system. Cities with the most significant regional influence agglomerate in the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and the Beijing-Tianjin metropolitan area. Among the five metropolitan areas in Eastern China, super-cities are dominant in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and the Pearl River Delta without the following development of small and medium cities; the Yangtze River Delta and Central-Southern Liaoning are characterized by the collaborative development of different sized cities led by super-cities; cities in Shandong Peninsula cooperate with each other well without a distinguished leading city. The regional influence of central cities in central and western China is limited. There are relatively large numbers of cities in central China, whose local influence domains can completely cover the whole region. At the same time, the regional influence of some (joint) central cities may increase by leaps and bounds. However, the urban size hierarchy is dominated by small cities as lacking large cities in the vast west China. Because of the limited regional and local influence of central cities, many outlying small cities have no chance to share the radiation effect of central cities. Since the influence of a specific central city on non-central cities can't be separated from that of other cities, this integrated approach of inspecting the influence domain of central cities through their influences accepted by others is not perfectly accurate. However, the method provides a new perspective for the study on city's influence domain, which is to combine the regional influence of central cities with the spatial distribution of cities of different sizes through the interaction among them.

Abstract:From the perspective of the coordination development,this paper comprehends urbanization from three major aspects,population,industry development and land use. An index framework is defined to identify the six types of urbanization patterns,and the types can be expressed in an equilateral triangle. The major driving force and the vulnerable aspect can be identified through this method. A case study of the Yangtze-River-Delta shows an approximate North-South spatial pattern of urbanization,with spatial adjacencies and convergence over the period 2000-2005. From the perspective of the long-run equilibrium,differences in urbanization pattern types exist generally among natural conditions and other inherent properties; which means that different types are not necessarily to lead to significant differences in the level of economic development. But from the view of the dynamic evolution during a period,land use change has been accelerating the rapid development in this specific region. Finally,the authors advocate more attention to the issue of healthy urbanization,especially in this stage of rapid development for contemporary China.

Abstract:With the rapid development of social economy in the cities,the space economic relationships and the optimization of regional organization are the fields in which relevant research flourishes and great achievements are accomplished.The paper aims to offer a way of thinking as well as a different direction.From the view of social economy,this paper,which based on the network of capital exchange among the sixteen central cities of the city agglomeration in the Yangtse River delta,attempts to discuss the space structure of the city agglomeration by means of analyzing the basic characteristics of the network.In its later development,the city agglomeration should design the overall layout reasonably,and enhance the coordination among the cities,and the government also has an important role to play.Thus favorable environment for the development of the cities can be created.
