Abstract:Spatial information plays an essential role on the progress of science and technology, and has a profound impact on economic growth and society progress in the twenty-first century. Geographic information systems (GIS) have a powerful ability for spatial knowledge representation and reasoning, and provide a novel approach to spatial information processing. In this paper, we focused on application of GIS to water resources management and quality assessment. A review is presented on water quality information system. And then we propose a model and framework of water quality information system based on GIS. Based on water quality assessment theory and Trend Analysis Model, we have constructed a water resources management and quality assessment information system via Visual basic and Map Object The system has a number of functions, such as water resources management, statistics reporting, analysis, assessment and prediction. The experimental results in Huangshi City are given to verify the practical feasibility of the proposed methodology. The system can provide efficient technical support and scientific basis for management of water resources. Eventually, we conclude with a summary and a statement of future work.
