Abstract:The output window of a high-power laser system is vulnerable to damage, and this is the main limiting factor on the power scaling and structure integrity of the laser system. In endeavoring to obtain higher output powers from the laser system, the impact of the thermal and mechanical effects and the damage mechanism of the output window must be considered. In order to study these issues, a thermal model of the laser window is established based on the heat transfer and thermoelastic theories, and the expressions for the transient thermal and mechanical stress distributions of the output window are deduced in terms of the integral-transform method. Taking the infrared quartz window material as an example, the temperature and mechanical field distributions of a high-power all-solid-state 2-mu m laser system window are simulated, and the laser-induced damage mechanism is deeply analyzed. The calculation results show that the laser window-induced damage is mainly caused by melting damage when the temperature exceeds the melting point of the material. The presented theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results are significant for the design and optimization of high-power laser windows. (C) The Authors. Calculation of Thermal and Mechanical Effect Induced by Laser in Optical Window Materials

Abstract:The thermal-mechanical model of transparent optical materials induced by high-power continuous laser is set up and the precise resolution of transient temperature field distribution induced by laser is obtained through resolving the 3-dimensional heat conduction equation using integral-transform method. On the base of the above analysis, the thermal stress field transient distribution induced by laser is worked out. Taking fused silica irradiated by 1.315 μm high-power chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) as an example, the fused silica temperature field and thermal-stress field transient distributions irradiated by COIL laser are calculated and the laser induced damage mechanism is analyzed further. The calculation result shows that the laser induced damage is mostly melt damage in the areas where temperature exceeds melt point of fused silica. Because fused silica has a fine thermal stability, the thermal stresses induced by the temperature ununiformity are small relatively. The theoretical analyzing result is in accordance with the relative experimental result, so the laser irradiation effect model proves correct.

Abstract:High-power laser systems are getting more and more widely used in industry and military affairs. It is necessary to develop a high-power laser system which can operate over long periods of time without appreciable degradation in performance. When a high-energy laser beam transmits through a laser window, it is possible that the permanent damage is caused to the window because of the energy absorption by window materials. So, when we design a high-power laser system, a suitable laser window material must be selected and the laser damage threshold of the window must be known. In this paper, a thermal analysis model of high-power laser window is established, and the relationship between the laser intensity and the thermal-stress field distribution is studied by deducing the formulas through utilizing the integral-transform method. The influence of window radius, thickness and laser intensity on the temperature and stress field distributions is analyzed. Then, the performance of K9 glass and the fused silica glass is compared, and the laser-induced damage mechanism is analyzed. Finally, the damage thresholds of laser windows are calculated. The results show that compared with K9 glass, the fused silica glass has a higher damage threshold due to its good thermodynamic properties. The presented theoretical analysis and simulation results are helpful for the design and selection of high-power laser windows.

Abstract:In a compartment fire environment, the high temperature encountered could induce important stresses in glass panes, resulting into cracks and possible fallout of the glazing. The aim of the present work is to investigate thermal stress distributions in a glazing system for fire scenarios. A two dimensional glass thermal stress model to calculate the transient temperature and thermal stress distributions in a typical window glass under fire conditions was developed based on the Kong's work. The basic thermal conduction equation and thermal stress equation for glass were discretized by using the Galerkin method. A computer program based on the model was also developed. For validation purposes, simulations have been carried out using literature experimental data on glazing behavior in an enclosure fire. The glass surface temperature (exposed side) and thermal stress distributions in the glass pane were calculated. The simulation results of the transient temperature and thermal stress are overall in line with the experimental data reported in literature. The major principal thermal stress distribution in the glass at the time of first crack is consistent with the experimental crack patterns. The calculated maximum stress is located at the top edge of the glass pane, as the first crack recorded by experiments. The model does not predict second or later cracks. These results illustrate the relatively good predictions and usefulness of the developed simulation code.
Simulating the thermal response of glass under various shading conditions in a fire

Abstract:In a fire, the thermal stress upon window glass caused by a temperature difference between exposed and shaded areas is the key factor contributing to glass fracture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of different shaded conditions on the glass when it is exposed to fire. Eleven different shading cases were simulated using finite element method (FEM) software, called EASY, which was developed by the authors and verified accurately by theory. The glass surface temperatures, stress field, the time and location of crack initiation and crack propagation were presented. It was found that the center shaded case is a safer way to protect the glass from cracking and the four corners shaded case has greater probability of cracking. The stress and fracture models for shading glass can be applied in predicting the probability of crack initiation, the distribution variation of temperatures and the stress time history under certain thermal loads. Furthermore, practical advice to optimize the window installation design or ways of shading to protect the glass from falling out in a fire can be obtained from the results.

Abstract:In this paper,a finite element analysis is used to present the distributions of thermal fields and stress fields at different Mach numbers at an altitude of 15km in a standard atmosphere for the CVD ZnS plane window.Then,the radiation intensity distribution of the window is obtained according to the temperature distribution.The results show that the temperature increases sharply in a short time,then the temperature distribution remains stable.The stress reaches the maximum value in an extremely short time and then decreases.The imaging quality of the plane window rapidly decreases with increasing the Mach number.The thermal radiation effect is one key factor for the quality of infrared image.

Abstract:Hypersonic aerocraft suffers strong aerodynamic forces and serious aerodynamic heating,requiring a more stringent design for infrared window.In order to provide a theoretical guidance for evaluation of the influence of aerodynamic heating and forces on infrared window materials,a finite element analysis of the distributions of thermal and stress fields in the infrared window is presented for hypersonic aerocrafts in this paper.The thermal and stress responses are then investigated under a constant heat flux boundary condition for three different window materials,and distributions of thermal field and stress field are also obtained in this work.Numerical results show that the maximum stress of CVDZnS and sapphire is less than the material mean strength at Mach 6.0,so this two materials are safe in this case.

Abstract:The thermal stress upon window glass is thought as the main cause of glass fracture under thermal or fire loads. A finite element program, called as EASY, was developed to investigate the dynamic thermal stress distribution upon glass in this work. A Newmark time integration method was used as the dynamic response scheme in the code. The EASY result on thermal stress agrees well with an ANSYS result, which indicates that EASY can be used to simulate the thermal stress distribution and predict the cracking of window glass under thermal loading. Furthermore, an experimental case was used to disclose how the thermal stress is accumulated and its distribution. The maximum tensile and compressive stresses are formed at where the high temperature and low temperature intersection. The investigated case shows the experimental crack time is 70 s and the simulated crack time is 66 s, which indicates that the EASY code results in the reliably result to predict the first crack of glass under thermal or fire load.
Mechanical and Thermal Analysis of Beryllium Windows for RF Cavities in a Muon Cooling Channel

Abstract:Thin beryllium windows (foils) may be utilized to increase shunt impedance of closed-cell RF cavities. These windows are subject to ohmic heating from RF currents. The resulting temperature gradients in the windows can produce out of plane displacements that detune the cavity frequency. The window displacement can be reduced or eliminated by pre-stressing the foils in tension. Because of possible variations during manufacture, it is important to quantify the actual prestress of a Be window before it is put into service. We present the thermal and mechanical analyses of such windows under typical operating conditions and describe a simple non-destructive means to quantify the pre-stress using the acoustic signature of a window. Using finite element analysis, thin plate theory and physical measurements of the vibration modes of a window we attempted to characterize the actual Be window pre-stress in a small number of commercially sourced windows (30% of yield strength is typical). This method can be used for any window material and size, but this study focused on 16 cm diameter Be Windows ranging in thickness from 125 microns to 508 microns and with varying pre-stresses. The method can be used to nondestructively test future Be windows for the desired prestress.

Abstract:The lifetime of optics, especially windows, has grown to reach 100 Bpls, and its evaluation lasts for several years at least. In elementary testing (short term), focusing on each damage phenomenon must be established. The degradation of calcium fluoride windows used as laser chamber windows in ArF excimer lasers (193-nm wavelength, 30-ns pulse width, 10-mJ output energy, ~80-mJ/cm2, 6-kHz and several dozen billion pulses) is analyzed. The results of analysis such as TEM-EDX, Nomarski-type differential interference contrast (DIC) microscope, AFM, etc. is shown. The damage mechanism can be estimated from these results. Comprehensive durability evaluation becomes more efficient by creating accelerated element tests (short term).

Abstract:The tempering process of plate glass involves rapidly cooling the high-temperature glass using an array of impinging air jets, inducing desired stress during cooling. Consequently, the formation of tempering stress results from the coupled interaction among flow, heat transfer, and stress. However, most previous studies have commonly neglected the influence of the flow field by assuming a uniform and constant distribution of heat transfer coefficients at different positions on the glass plate, which deviates from actual situations. This study employed a fluid-thermal-structural coupled simulation approach to predict the non-uniform residual stress distribution in tempered glass and investigate the interaction mechanisms among flow, heat transfer, and stress. Simultaneously, to validate the reliability of the method and model, this study experimentally investigated the single-nozzle jet impingement cooling for glass tempering. The study concluded that the simulation results were consistent with the experiment. Subsequently, a comparative analysis was performed between the fluid-thermal-structural coupled simulation results based on real boundary conditions and the thermal-structural coupled simulation results based on ideal uniform heat transfer coefficient boundary conditions. The results revealed non-uniform distributions of both heat transfer coefficient and temperature due to varying localized flow characteristics. Consequently, the ratio of surface compressive stress to internal tensile stress along the width direction of the glass was not a fixed value but ranged from 1.63 to 2.38. Furthermore, significant differences were observed in the stress distribution under the simulations of fluid-thermal-structural coupling and thermal-structural coupling. Therefore, it is recommended to employ the fluid-thermal-structural coupling method when predicting localized stress distribution.

Abstract:The CaF2 window is the laser exit of the DUV lithography machine as well as its sealing component. Bearing the irradiation, high pressure, and discharging pollutants, the window is easy to damage and directly deteriorate the performance and reliability of the laser. In this paper, considering the effects of the above factors, two typical short-term damages to the CaF2 window - high energy induced damage and pollutant-induced damage are studied quantitatively. Using an experimental design, theoretical calculation, characterization analysis, and numerical simulation, we found that the damage induced by high-energy irradiation is dominated by defect propagation at the initial stage. At the later stage, it is dominated by heat and thermal stress with thermal melting and evenly distributed microcracks of 1-10 mu m in size. Low-energy irradiation only causes expansion and deformation of the window, but the highly absorbent electrode discharging particles with a diameter of 0.1-1 mu m strongly absorb the laser. Strong local heat is caused during the melting and gasification of the particles, which easily leads to ablation and cracks. The damaged area is proportional to the particle size, and the damaged rate is proportional to the average power density at a high repetition frequency. High energy density and the defects with high absorptivity, the electrode discharging particles, and the heat accumulation effect, are the main factors for the two short-term damage, respectively.

Abstract:A thorough examination has been performed of the thermally induced stresses on a window in an enclosure-fire environment. Analytical and numerical methods establish the importance of bridling stress (due to axial elongation) and flexing stress (due to normal deformation). Most previous studies omitted the consideration of flexing stresses. Maximum stresses, being the sum of bridling and flexing stresses on the side, have been calculated for varying aspect ratios of a rectangular window and for varying ratios of shaded width to the window sides. For uniform width and heating (e.g., represented, by constant high temperature in the heated region and ambient temperature in the shaded region), the maximum stresses are bridling and equal to those of an infinite strip shaded on two sides when the shaded width is less than 40% of the short side. For nonuniform shading (e.g., due to radiation blockage) or nonuniform heating, flexing stresses contribute to the total stress by an increase up to 50%. These new results have been applied in predicting the magnitude of stresses and the location of the first crack in well-controlled experiments and measurements. These results are important because they extend and delineate the limitations of currently used relations for determining thermally induced stresses and times of first cracking in windows.

Abstract:In laser cleaving of brittle materials using controlled fracture technique, thermal stresses are used to induce a crack and the material is separated along the cutting path by extending this crack. In this study, a glass sheet is stressed thermally using a 808–940nm diode laser radiation. One of the problems in laser cutting of glass with controlled fracture technique is the cut deviation at the leading and the trailing edges of the glass sheet. In order to avoid this damage it is necessary to understand the stress distributions which control crack propagation. A study is conducted here to analyse the cut deviation problem of glass by examining the stress fields during diode laser cutting of soda-lime glass sheets. Optical microscope photographs of the breaking surface are obtained to examine the surface quality and cut path deviation while the latter is explained from the results of the stress fields which are obtained from a finite element simulation.

Abstract:Window glass breakage in a building fire could change the oxygen supply because of the entrance of fresh air. To investigate the break behavior of window glass under various rates of temperature rise, a finite element method was employed to solve the linear dynamic response equilibrium of the system. The Coulomb-Mohr criterion and SIFs based mixed-mode criterion were employed to predict the crack initiation and growth, respectively. A total of 12 rates of temperature rise were designed from 150K/s to 0.75K/s for a centre- heated and edges-shaded glass pane. The maximum thermal stresses are located at the shaded part between the hot and cool glass layer, which is where the cracking is initiated. Under a rapid rate of temperature rise, a smaller temperature rise could result in a bigger dynamic stress which is then followed by crack initiation. Under a slower rate of temperature rise, the dynamic effect becomes weaker and the thermal stress can be evaluated using the static method.

Abstract:Building façades made of glass are viewed as one of the weakest parts of a building; these can easily break in case of fire and change the compartment fire dynamic by creating a new opening for air to enter. According to the onsite survey in four cities in China, nine cases with different shaded and constraining conditions are designed to investigate the thermal response of Low-E glass façades when subjected to a fire. The Coulomb–Mohr criterion and SIFs based mixed-mode criterion are employed to predict the crack initiation and growth, respectively. The glass stress distributions, breaking time and the initiation and propagation of crack are presented, using the three-dimensional finite element method. It was found that various shaded and constraining conditions have a significant effect on the breaking behavior of glass panes. The glass panes with four edges shaded are more prone breaking than other shaded cases, but the four edges constrained pane is relatively safer. All cracks initiate either from the edge of the pane or the borderline between the exposed and shaded areas. Furthermore, practical advice to optimize the window installation design or ways to protect the glass from falling out in a fire can be obtained from the results.

Abstract:To investigate the effect of shaded width on the breaking behavior of window glass, a series of experiments was carried out on float glass with dimension of 600 mm × 600 mm × 6 mm in an enclosed compartment under radiant heat. The shaded width of glass pane ranged from 10 mm to 50 mm with an interval of 10 mm. Experimental results showed that crack patterns of the glass pane were influenced little by the shaded width, while the average value of the first breaking time of the glass pane decreased firstly and then increased with an increase in the shaded width. The average time to the first crack with the shaded width of 20 mm was shortest in experiments and the corresponding time was 572.5 s. In addition, the finite element method was also used to simulate the process of crack initiation and single crack propagation. Temperatures measured by thermocouples in experiments were employed as thermal loads for the problem of glass breakage. The first breaking time obtained by the program was in good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:In laser-induced thermal-crack propagation, thermal stresses control the crack propagation mode and the quality of the crack surface. In this article, the 1064-nm semiconductor laser as a volumetric heat source is used for symmetry and asymmetry cutting glass. One of the problems in laser asymmetry linear cutting glass with laser-induced thermal-crack propagation is the quality of the crack surface which gets worse than that in symmetry cutting. This study lays great emphasis on analyzing the effect of the focus position and shear stresses on the crack sectional shape in semiconductor laser asymmetry linear cutting glass. This article indicates the volumetric heat flux formula, which simulates the temperature distribution from the material above or below the focal point. The heat source should be positioned above the focal point. Optical microscope photographs of the crack surface and sectional shape are obtained to examine the surface quality which is explained from the results of the stress fields using the extended finite element method simulation. In asymmetry cutting, shear stress is parallel to the crack surface and perpendicular to the cutting direction, which makes the crack surface smooth but uneven.
