Bakhtin's Carnival Theory from the Historiographical Perspective

Abstract:Aron Gurevich,the famous historian,had wisely pointed that Bakhtin opposed grass-roots culture against upper-class culture completely so that he neglected the infiltration and interaction between them.Therefore,Gurevich made a conclusion that Bakhtin exaggerated the significance of carnival culture in his theory.However,for carnival theory such defects are not fundamental because this theory is neither myth nor fallacy.In essence,Bakhtin and his opponents adopted different perspectives.So their dispute about whether carnival theory is tenable or not,in the final analysis,is not a matter of who mastered the historical facts,but a matter of perspectives,which means the historian takes what kind of perspective to select,identify and explain materials.Bakhtin,with his interdisciplinary view and extraordinary insights,provides many inspirations for academic innovation.For instance,he pioneered the subject of folk carnival(laugh) culture for the study of historiography.For his concerning about the grass roots' feelings and minds,his position of supporting the folk culture and his courage for declaring the discourse right of the folk,Bakhtin has been being admired from people's hearts.
