Abstract:Objective Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the stroop effect on the brain activation in male schizophrenic patients. Methods Twenty-six male patients with schizophrenia and 17 normal controls were enrolled. They were matched for age and education. FMRI using a slow event-related stroop-like paradigm including congruent condition (CC) and incongruent condition (IC) was conducted. The statistical parametric mapping (SPM2) and analysis of functional neuroimaging were used in imaging preprocessing and data analysis. Results (1) The reflect time (RT) of the controls was significantly longer than the RT of the patients on CC,but no difference was found on IC. In both the patients and the controls, the RT on IC were longer than the RT on CC. Brain activation didn′t show more activated areas on IC than CC in both controls and schizophrenic patients by SPM. (2) The patients showed decreased regional homogeneity (ReHo) in some brain regions, which distributed over the right insular lobe, right inferior frontal gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus, left anterior cingulate cortex, left culmen and left middle frontal gyrus. Conclusion The results suggest there is stroop effect in behavioral reaction time but not brain activation in male schizophrenic patients.
