Abstract:The porous anodic aluminum oxide was prepared on the high-purity aluminium foil through direct curret anodizing.While scanning electron microscope was used to observe the surface topography and thickness of the oxide.Cyclic voltammetry and eletrochemical impedance spectrum were used to characterize the capacity of the AAO.The results revealed that AAO consist of parallel nanopore canals with the pore diameter of 60 to 80nm,which were perpendicular to the surface,the thickness of the porous layer was about 20μm;the specific capacitance of the porous anodic aluminum oxide was about 5μF/cm2,and could be applied at voltages between 200 and 250V;the results indicated that the porous anodic aluminum oxide had a good future on the application of the medium and high voltage aluminum electrolytic capacitor.

Abstract:The progress of preparing high specific capacitance anode foils used for Al electrolytic capacitors in recently 10 years was reviewed. Sol-gel method、hydrolysis precipitation method、electrochemical deposition method and heat treatment method were summarized mainly. The growth mechanism of films prepared by these methods was discussed. The joint effect of effective area S、formation constant K and relative dielectric constant εr is the development trend of preparing high specific capacitance anode aluminum foil.
Preparation of High Dielectric Constant Composite Oxide Films for Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Abstract:Aluminum foils were dipped in solution containing Ti4+ and heated in air at 500°C to deposit Ti oxide on the inner walls of pores, and then anodized galvanostatically in ammonium adipate solution, by which Al-Ti composite oxide films were achieved. Film composition and percentage of atom were analyzed by XPS, voltage-time response of aluminum foil during anodizing was followed, dielectric constant of composite films was calculated in theory, and capacitance and durability of aluminum electrolytic capacitors was examined. The results show that impregnating time is optimally 10 min, and compared with pure aluminum foils, aluminum foils after impregnating present a larger anodizing velocity. At the same withstanding voltage, the electric capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitors with Al-Ti composite oxide films is about 23% higher than that with pure Al2O3 film. The theoretical calculation of dielectric constant is in good agreement with experimental result. The Al-Ti composite oxide films are suitable for dielectric of aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Abstract:AC electrochemical corrosion of high pure aluminum foil in hydrochloric solution is studied. A new mechanism of transport of chloride ion through the oxide film by means of oxygen vacancies is established. Adsorption of chloride ion on oxygen film surface and transport through the film was discussed. The behaviors of AC electrochemical corrosion of high pure aluminum foil in hydrochloric solution can be clearly explained by the new mechanism.

Abstract:Reviewed were recent researches on impurities and additives to increase the static capacity of anode foils of high voltage aluminum electrolytic capacitor.Mainly summarized were the effects of trace elements on the capacity,such as Mg,Fe,Si and Pb,as well as inhibitors and surface active agent in the corrosion solution.Moreover,the corrosion mechanisms of aluminum foil were illustrated,such as the function mechanism of Cl–,the relationships between corrosion current and potential,and void model.Finally the developing technology approaches to improve performance of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor were suggested.

Abstract:Dense and nonporous amorphous aluminum oxide (AmAO) film was deposited onto platinized silicon substrate by sol-gel and spin coating technology. The evaporated aluminum film was deposited onto the AmAO film as top electrode. The hydrated AmAO film was utilized as a solid electrolyte for anodic oxidation of the aluminum electrode (Al) film under high electric field. The hydrated AmAO film was a high efficiency electrolyte, where a 45 nm thick Al film was anodized completely on a 210 nm thick hydrated AmAO film. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and breakdown phenomena of a dry and hydrated 210 nm thick AmAO film with a 150 nm thick Al electrode pad were studied in this work. Breakdown voltage of the dry and hydrated 210 nm thick AmAO film were 85 ± 3 V (405 ± 14 MV m(-1)) and 160 ± 5 V (762 ± 24 MV m(-1)), respectively. The breakdown voltage of the hydrated AmAO film increased about twice, owing to the self-healing behavior (anodic oxidation reaction). As an intuitive phenomenon of the self-healing behavior, priority anodic oxidation phenomena was observed in a 210 nm thick hydrated AmAO film with a 65 nm thick Al electrode pad. The results suggested that self-healing behavior (anodic oxidation reaction) was occurring nearby the defect regions of the films during I-V test. It was an effective electrical self-healing method, which would be able to extend to many other simple and complex oxide dielectrics and various composite structures.

Abstract:The barrier anodic alumina (BAA) film formed by aluminum anodization is used as the capacitor dielectric, and the working electrolyte is called the 'blood' of the electrolytic capacitor. It is crucial to study the formation process of BAA in working electrolytes for improving the performance of electrolytic capacitor. Here, constant current anodization of pure aluminum was carried out in a neutral working electrolyte composed of ammonium pentaborate and ammonium benzoate without corrosion. It was found that voltage oscillation appears in its voltage-time curve. The FESEM images show that the voltage oscillation in the voltage-time curve leads to the appearance of holes in the BAA. The existence of these holes will inevitably affect the voltage resistance, leakage current and high-temperature resistance of the dielectric film. To eliminate the voltage oscillation phenomenon, the electrolyte was modified by adding ADP (ammonium dihydrogen phosphate) and HYS-01(24-carbon multibranched tetrameric ammonium carboxylate) additives. The interesting findings show that when aluminum was anodized in the working electrolyte with the addition of ADP and HYS-01, the voltage oscillation disappeared, and so did the holes in the BAA. The voltage resistance of dielectric film and leakage current performance were significantly improved after storage at a high-temperature of 130 °C for 500 h.

Abstract:For anodized aluminum, the enhancement of the specific capacitance foils by increasing dielectric constant is one of the most common methods to meet the requirements of miniaturization and lightweight of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. In this study, surface self-assembly method was used to introduce sulfonic acid group to graft the surface of aluminum foil for changing its electrical properties. Electrostatic repulsion between surface of aluminum foil and colloidal particles of titanium dioxide was changed to electrostatic forces due to the existence of sulfonic acid group, which dramatically enhanced the deposition of titanium dioxide on the surface of the aluminum foil. After heat treatment and anodic oxidation of aluminum foil, the Al2O3/TiO2 compounds with high dielectric constant on the surface of aluminum foil were prepared successfully. Comparing with those without TiO2 coating, the content of Ti on the surface of anodized aluminum foil prepared by surface self-assembly method increased by 30 times while the specific capacitance of anodized aluminum foil was enhanced by 44.26% at the withstanding voltage of 400 V. Therefore, anodized aluminum foil with a high specific capacitance prepared by above method exhibits great potential in commercial application of aluminum electrolytic capacitor in the future.

Abstract:This research article aims to improve the specific capacitance of DC-etched Al foil for Al electrolytic capacitors by forming an Al2O3-TiO2 composite anodic oxide film. DC-etched Al foils for aluminum electrolytic capacitors were immersed in a TiO2 precursor sol, followed by calcination and anodizing to manufacture a TiO2-Al2O3 composite anodic oxide film. TiO2 precursor sol–gel particles after calcination were analyzed by XRD. During anodization, the anode potential with time was measured by a digital meter. A scanning electron microscope, electrochemical impedance measurements, and a general digital LCR meter were adopted to explore the microstructure and property of the anodic oxide films. The specific capacitance for the TiO2-Al2O3 composite anodic oxide film and a pure Al anodic one is 3.013 μF/cm2 and 2.435 μF/cm2 at C60V, respectively. The thickness is 87.26 nm for the former and 177.65 nm for the latter. The results show that the TiO2-Al2O3 composite anodic oxide film is about 51% thinner than the single Al anodic film, accounting for a large improvement in specific capacitance. The formation efficiency of the pretreated sample is much higher than that of the blank sample, owing to the pre-deposited TiO2 layer and thermal Al oxide layer. However, the composite anodic oxide film's specific resistance was reduced and its dielectric loss was also aggravated, resulting from the doping-introduced structural defects.

Abstract:Effective oxidation treatment for the etched foil before anode formation was used to improve the structure and performance of anode oxide film. An etched foil was first treated by immersing in 0.2 mol/L special aqueous for about 10 min at 75 °C and heated at 570 °C for 3 h. Through measuring the capacitance of treated aluminum foil, it shows that foil is capable of obtaining an increased capacitance by 25-50%. The electric energy for anodic formation decrease by 30-50%.

Abstract:To improve the dielectric performance of the anodic alumina film used in aluminum electrolytic capacitors, this study comparatively investigated the microstructure and dielectric properties of anodic aluminum oxide obtained through micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and conventional anodic oxidation (CAO). It is found that from the perspective of microstructure, the internal structure of the MAO treated oxide film has more and larger pores than that of CAO. This was attributed to the generation and overflow of numerous oxygen bubbles from within the oxide film at the locations where plasma sparks occurred during the process, thus forming larger pores. Regarding dielectric properties, the leakage current of the oxide film after MAO treatment was significantly reduced compared to CAO, with reductions of 58%, 56%, 64%, and 74% for the tested electrolytes Y1–Y4, respectively.

Abstract:In this review, the research conducted by the authors on anodic oxide films on aluminum is described, paying particular attention to how the electric field strength, as a factor other than voltage, controls the nanostructures and properties of the films. It will also be indicated what factors contribute to the formation of defects, which, in contrast to the ideal or model film structure, contains a significant number of defects in the film. In addition to electrochemical measurements, the films were examined with a variety of advanced instruments, including electron microscopes, to confirm the “reality of film nanostructure” from a slightly different angle than the conventional view. The following topics on anodic films formed in four types of major anodizing electrolytes are discussed: pore initiation process, steady-state porous structure, sealing mechanism, the relationship between cell parameters and voltage/electric field strength, amount and depth of anion incorporation, electrolyte types, radial branching of pores, atypical pore structures, defect formation mechanism, self-ordering, Al coordination number, and the creation of α-alumina membranes.

Abstract:The core of aluminium electrolytic capacitors anode foil is the pit distribution of etched foils and the specific capacitance of formed foils, there is still no well-developed system to evaluate both at once. In this study, a pit anodizing model and a method to simulate the CV value of high-voltage etched aluminium foil is proposed. The model processes scanning electron microscopy photographs of high-voltage etched aluminium foils, models the growth of alumina in the 200-600 V ranges, takes into account the pit clogging phenomenon of the anodic oxidation process by image processing, corrects and specifies the formation constants and dielectric constants of alumina at different formation voltages. The model can reflect the growth pattern of alumina in the standard process. With the model proposed in this work, the CV values of aluminium foils at each formation voltage are simulated. The simulated results have a mean deviation of 1.4% from the actual experimental values, which can accurately simulate the real performance of the etched foil. This simulation method can evaluate the performance of aluminium foil after anodizing by considering both the pit distribution and the anodizing environment. It can also be used to compare the applicable working voltage ranges of different etched foils. This can help factories and laboratories with etching foil selection, greatly reducing material and time consumption.

Abstract:Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film of different regular hierarchical pore structures and AAO-MnO2 composite of many homogeneously distributed microvoids have been prepared and comparatively characterized, mostly as they were adopted as an anode foil of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Results showed that the hierarchical pore structure of AAO film is composed of a supernatant layer of larger holes and a rock-bottom layer of smaller holes. The smaller holes' density increases with the reduction of the secondary anodization voltage in the two-step anodization process of the AAO film, which subsequently enlarges the specific capacitance to 7.88 mu F/cm(2) and may also increase the leakage current when the AAO film is adopted as the anode foil in an aluminum electrolytic capacitor. The obtained hierarchical AAO-MnO2 composite, with a multi-layered interweaved structure, has not only significantly brought up the specific capacitance from 7.88 mu F/cm(2) to 25.56 mu F/cm(2) but also may significantly reduce the leakage current and consequently improve the stability when being used as the anode foil. Compared with merely increasing the surface area of AAO film, the introduction of high dielectric constant compounds into the AAO film without changing the actual surface area can improve the aluminum electrolytic capacitor's capacitance performance more effectively.
Effect of SrTiO3 Composite Oxide Film on Specific Capacitance of Aluminum Anode

Abstract:SrTiO3 coating was applied to the etched aluminum foil by dip-coating with citrate solution.The influences of solution concentration,the amount of citric acid,immersing time,annealing temperature and time on the specific capacitance of the coated samples were studied.It was experimentally shown that the specific capacitance of the coated sample treated under 3×10-3mol/L for 10min,and annealed under 550℃ for 1h would be the largest.In addition,the amount of citric acid had little effect on the specific capacitance.The capacitance was increased by about 15% after SrTiO3 coating. The composite oxide films are promising to be used as the dielectric of electrolytic capacitor.

Abstract:The oxidation behavior of aluminum alloy has a significant impact on its industrial application of aluminum alloy, and studying how aluminum alloy oxidizes in electrolyte solutions is crucial. However, current research predominantly focuses on aluminum anodization at higher voltages and the second-phase corrosion behaviors in halide ion-containing solutions. The research on the formation mechanism of the oxide film on the aluminum surface lacks in-depth analysis, and there is no unified opinion on the method of oxygen invasion into the oxide film. This study establishes an experiment on the corrosion of aluminum alloy in an oxygen-free water environment. By scrutinizing the oxidation behaviors of aluminum surface under conditions of no voltage and low voltage, we investigate the effect of applied electric field on the mode of oxygen invasion in alumina. The findings reveal that under the condition of no external voltage and an alkaline environment, self-passivation products of aluminum undergo a transformation from AlO(OH) to Al(OH)3 as the pH value increases. At a pH of 10, complete transformation into Al(OH)3 occurs. When external voltage is applied, Al(OH)3 is initially formed on the aluminum surface with an increase of potential. As the potential reaches a certain value, the potential energy barrier for the reaction of H and O in OH− is disrupted, leading to the reaction of Al3+ replacing H+ and generating an Al2O3 film, with the current on the membrane surface changes unevenly during this process, resulting in the emergence of a double-layer film structure on the aluminum surface. Therefore, under the electrochemical environment of applying a small current, the film formation process on the surface of aluminum alloy is carried out under the action of OH− heterocracking in water, and the O in the water molecule forms two distinct oxide films with the Al matrix in the form of O2− and OH−.

Abstract:The Al−Ti composite oxide films with high dielectric constant were prepared by hydrolysis precipitation and anodizing. The growth, structure and electrical properties of the Al−Ti composite oxide films formed at different anodizing temperatures from 25°C to 85°C have been studied by dissolution of anodic oxide films, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and electrical measurements. With the anodizing temperature increasing, the film growth rate increases, the structure of two layers in the Al−Ti composite oxide film converts into three layers, I–V characteristics change evidently, and the specific capacitance achieves a peak value at about 75°C. The local breakdown in the composite oxide films formed at 50°C occurs obviously, which may be contributed to the lowest leakage current and the highest withstanding voltage.
