Abstract:Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) are attracting significant attention due to their high energies/power densities, safety, and low cost. In this review, recent advances in the development of ZHSCs are summarized. Particular emphasis is placed on state-of-the-art cathodes (including carbon, metal oxides, MXenes, and redox-active polymers), anodes (including Zn-based composites and Zn-free materials) and electrolytes for ZHSCs. Furthermore, the latest research on functional ZHSC devices with miniaturized ZHSCs, fiber-shaped ZHSCs, self-chargeable ZHSCs and self-healing devices is reported. Finally, further developments with ZHSCs are envisaged for future research in this thriving field. This research is emphasized particularly on cathodes (such as carbon, metal oxides, MXenes, and redox-active polymers), anodes (such as Zn-based composite materials and Zn-free materials), electrolytes (organic/ionic liquid electrolytes, WiSs, redox electrolytes, polymer or solid electrolytes) as well as the design of a novel device for ZHSCs.
Nanostructured LiMn2O4 Composite As High-Rate Cathode for High Performance Aqueous Li-ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Abstract:Nanostructured spinel LiMn2O4 and super P composite with much enhanced electrochemical performance especially ultrahigh rate capability as the cathode for aqueous hybrid supercapacitors is synthesized by ball milling commercial LiMn2O4 particles together with super P. The as-prepared composite delivers a high capacitance of 306 F g(-1) at the current density of 1 A g(-1) and superb rate ability of 228.6 F g(-1) at 40 A g(-1) in 1 M Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The capacitance of the nanostructured composite is 3.5 times higher than that of pristine LiMn2O4 even being charged and discharged 80 times faster. The excellent performances are ascribed to the nanosized LiMn2O4 well dispersed into the conductive carbon matrix. LiMn2O4 and super P composite//active carbon hybrid supercapacitor is assembled and the energy density can reach up to 21.58 Wh kg(-1) at 293.16 Wkg(-1) and 13 Wh kg(-1) at 5200 W kg(-1). The hybrid device also shows an excellent cycling performance, which retains 85% of the initial capacitance after 4500 cycles. This work provides an effectively facile way to produce high performance LiMn2O4-based cathodes for hybrid suercapacitors in practical applications.

Abstract:Compared with conventional secondary batteries, electrochemical supercapacitors exhibit the long cycling life and high power density, but with low energy density. In order to improve the energy density of supercapacitor, the most promising approaches are either to use an electrode material with large specific capacitance or increase its working voltage by utilizing a hybrid supercapacitor system which consist an activated carbon electrode and a battery elelctrode material (pseudo-capacitor material). The present paper introduces the development of the hybrid supercapacitor and the recent research on the electrode materials for hybrid supercapacitor. Many studies have been undertaken for the various hybrid supercapacitor systems to obtain higher energy density, coupling redox-active material electrodes with activated carbon electrode, such as activated carbon/NiOOH (FeOOH), activated carbon/graphite, activated carbon/metal oxides and activated carbon/polymer hybrid supercapacitors. Recently, Li-ion intercalated compounds Li4Ti5O12 and lithium-ion battery carbon materials are attracting much attention as positive electrode with a negative activated carbon electrode. At the same time, many researches focus on the various hybrid capacitor systems consisting of negative activated carbon electrode and positive aqueous Lithium-ion battery materials electrode, such as LiMn2O4, LiCoO2, LiTi2 (PO4)(3) and LiCo1/3Ni1/3 Mn1/3O2. These hybrid supercapacitors are improved in energy density and also with the working voltage increased, comparing with the traditional activated carbon/activated carbon electrochemical double-layer capacitor. In the paper, the research situation and development tend of several kinds of hybrid systems and the currently studied relative materials are also introduced.

Abstract:The hybrid ion capacitor (HIC) is a hybrid electrochemical energy storage device that combines the intercalation mechanism of a lithium-ion battery anode with the double-layer mechanism of the cathode. Thus, an HIC combines the high energy density of batteries and the high power density of supercapacitors, thus bridging the gap between batteries and supercapacitors. Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials (graphite, graphene, carbon nanosheets) are promising candidates for hybrid capacitors owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, including their enormous specific surface areas, abundance of active sites (surface and functional groups), and large interlayer spacing. So far, there has been no review focusing on the 2D carbon-based materials for the emerging post-lithium hybrid capacitors. This concept review considers the role of 2D carbon in hybrid capacitors and the recent progress in the application of 2D carbon materials for post-Li (Na+, K+, Zn2+) hybrid capacitors. Moreover, their challenges and trends in their future development are discussed.

Abstract:Currently, energy storage systems are of great importance in daily life due to our dependence on portable electronic devices and hybrid electric vehicles. Among these energy storage systems, hybrid supercapacitor devices, constructed from a battery-type positive electrode and a capacitor-type negative electrode, have attracted widespread interest due to their potential applications. In general, they have a high energy density, a long cycling life, high safety, and environmental friendliness. This review first addresses the recent developments in state-of-the-art electrode materials, the structural design of electrodes, and the optimization of electrode performance. Then we summarize the possible classification of hybrid supercapacitor devices, and their potential applications. Finally, the fundamental theoretical aspects, charge-storage mechanism, and future developing trends are discussed. This review is intended to provide future research directions for the next generation of high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:In recent years, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to the development of high-performance electrochemical supercapacitors utilizing innovative electrode materials. These supercapacitors, or electrochemical capacitors, have captured significant attention due to their exceptional power density, extended cycle life, and rapid charge and discharge capabilities. However, it is crucial to recognize that the performance of supercapacitors heavily relies on the characteristics of the electrode materials utilized. To enhance the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors, the utilization of hybrid electrode materials has emerged as a promising approach. These hybrid materials involve the combination of different types of materials, enabling synergistic effects that enhance the overall performance of the supercapacitors. This review article aims to explore the recent advancements in the development of hybrid electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors. Within this article, we extensively discuss the properties and performance of various hybrid electrode materials, including carbon-based materials, metal oxides, conducting polymers, as well as other miscellaneous materials such as metal sulfide, metal-organic frameworks, and MXene. Furthermore, this article underscores the existing challenges and potential opportunities for further improving the performance of hybrid electrode materials in supercapacitor applications. Our emphasis lies on novel approaches, such as the flash joule heating technique, which enables the fabrication of conductive electrode materials with optimal porosity and high surface area in a significantly reduced timeframe. In summary, this review article provides a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the recent advancements in hybrid electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors. By understanding the properties and performance of these materials, as well as identifying challenges and opportunities for improvement, we can pave the way towards the future development of supercapacitors with enhanced capabilities.

Abstract:For hybrid electric vehicles, supercapacitors are an attractive technology which, when used in conjunction with the batteries as a hybrid system, could solve the shortcomings of the battery. Supercapacitors would allow hybrid electric vehicles to achieve high efficiency and better power control. Supercapacitors possess very good power density. Besides this, their charge-discharge cycling stability and comparatively reasonable cost make them an incredible energy-storing device. The manufacturing strategy and the major parts like electrodes, current collector, binder, separator, and electrolyte define the performance of a supercapacitor. Among these, electrode materials play an important role when it comes to the performance of supercapacitors. They resolve the charge storage in the device and thus decide the capacitance. Porous carbon, conductive polymers, metal hydroxide, and metal oxides, which are some of the usual materials used for the electrodes in the supercapacitors, have some limits when it comes to energy density and stability. Major research in supercapacitors has focused on the design of stable, highly efficient electrodes with low cost. In this review, the most recent electrode materials used in supercapacitors are discussed. The challenges, current progress, and future development of supercapacitors are discussed as well. This study clearly shows that the performance of supercapacitors has increased considerably over the years and this has made them a promising alternative in the energy sector.

Abstract:Polyaniline has been widely used in high-performance pseudocapacitors, due to its low cost, easy synthesis, and high theoretical specific capacitance. However, the poor mechanical properties of polyaniline restrict its further development. Compared with polyaniline, functionalized carbon materials have excellent physical and chemical properties, such as porous structures, excellent specific surface area, good conductivity, and accessibility to active sites. However, it should not be neglected that the specific capacity of carbon materials is usually unsatisfactory. There is an effective strategy to combine carbon materials with polyaniline by a hybridization approach to achieve a positive synergistic effect. After that, the energy storage performance of carbon/polyaniline hybridization material has been significantly improved, making it a promising and important electrode material for supercapacitors. To date, significant progress has been made in the synthesis of various carbon/polyaniline binary composite electrode materials. In this review, the corresponding properties and applications of polyaniline and carbon hybrid materials in the energy storage field are briefly reviewed. According to the classification of different types of functionalized carbon materials, this article focuses on the recent progress in carbon/polyaniline hybrid materials, and further analyzes their corresponding properties to provide guidance for the design, synthesis, and component optimization for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:<p>Metal ion based hybrid capacitors (HCs) with a series of superiorities, such as exceptional electrochemical properties, cost-effective, safety and environmental benignity have come to the foreground in recent years. It is one of the indispensable energy storage systems that can not only hold high energy density and high power density simultaneously but also connect batteries and supercapacitors, thereby satisfying the energy storage needs of future multifunctional electronic devices. In this review, after a detailed introduction of the advanced electrode materials classified into battery-type and capacitive-type materials, the application of aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes (organic electrolytes and ionic liquid electrolytes) were described sequentially as well. Furthermore, we addressed the recent advances on metal ion (Li, Na, K, Zn and Mg)<strong>-</strong>based HCs from the aspects of components, energy storage and conversion mechanism, selection and optimization of electrode materials and electrolytes as well as electrochemical performance evaluation and potential application. It can further comprehend the impact of key materials of metal ion based HCs on electrochemical performance, thus securing major advances in energy storage. Eventually, the principal challenges and future research prospects toward the metal ion based HCs were illustrated.</p>

Abstract:Design and fabrication of electrochemical energy storage systems with both high energy and power densities as well as long cycling life is of great importance. As one of these systems, Battery-supercapacitor hybrid device (BSH) is typically constructed with a high-capacity battery-type electrode and a high-rate capacitive electrode, which has attracted enormous attention due to its potential applications in future electric vehicles, smart electric grids, and even miniaturized electronic/optoelectronic devices, etc. With proper design, BSH will provide unique advantages such as high performance, cheapness, safety, and environmental friendliness. This review first addresses the fundamental scientific principle, structure, and possible classification of BSHs, and then reviews the recent advances on various existing and emerging BSHs such as Li-/Na-ion BSHs, acidic/alkaline BSHs, BSH with redox electrolytes, and BSH with pseudocapacitive electrode, with the focus on materials and electrochemical performances. Furthermore, recent progresses in BSH devices with specific functionalities of flexibility and transparency, etc. will be highlighted. Finally, the future developing trends and directions as well as the challenges will also be discussed; especially, two conceptual BSHs with aqueous high voltage window and integrated 3D electrode/electrolyte architecture will be proposed.

Abstract:The rapid advancement in electronic devices, electric vehicles, and grid storage stations have lead to a high demand for energy storage devices with enhanced power and energy densities as well as extended lifespans. Lithium ion hybrid capacitors are constructed with battery-type anodes and capacitor-type cathodes, which enables the direct integration of the high energy from lithium ion batteries and high power and long lifetime from supercapacitors, making lithium ion hybrid capacitor one of the most promising energy storage devices. In the past two decades, tremendous efforts have been put into the search for suitable battery-type anode materials with improved Faradaic reaction kinetics so that it can match with the fast non-Faradaic charging rate of the capacitive cathodes. This review aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive summary of the battery-type anode materials for high-performance lithium ion hybrid capacitors. To date, a large variety of battery-type anode materials have been explored with smart material design strategies, such as carbonaceous materials, metal oxides, alloys, sulfides, nitirdes, and Mxenes, etc., which will be discussed in detail. A perspective to the challenges and future developing trends of lithium ion hybrid capacitors is proposed to close.

Abstract:Constructed with both capacitive and battery-like electrodes, hybrid supercapacitor devices have been adopted as promising energy storage devices for their favorable power and energy densities. Design and fabrication of capacitive and battery-like electrode materials endowed with high specific capacitances/capacities, high rate performance and desirable durability are crucial to improve the overall energy storage performances of hybrid supercapacitors. As emerging porous crystalline materials, metal-organic frameworks with favorable porous properties, tunable chemical compositions and adjustable structures/morphologies can lead to desirable energy storage performances of hybrid supercapacitors. In this review, started from the classification of supercapacitors and electrode materials, the recent advances of pristine metal-organic' frameworks, metal-organic framework composites and metal-organic frameworks derived materials applied for hybrid supercapacitor were elaborated. Abstract:As a new type of energy storage device, supercapacitors with high specific capacitance, fast charge and discharge, and long cycle life have attracted significant attention in the energy storage field. Electrode materials are a crucial factor defining the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. The standard supercapacitor electrode materials used can be classified into three types: carbon-based materials, metal oxides and hydroxide materials, and conductive polymers. This review introduces the principles of supercapacitors and summarizes recent research progress of carbon-based electrode materials, including pure carbon materials, and the binary and ternary complex materials with carbon.

Abstract:Herein, the basic principles and recent progress of conventional capacitors, supercapacitor, and emerging hybrid ion capacitor are comprehensively and systematically summarized, from the aspects of history, mechanism, electrode materials, existing challenges, and perspectives. Also, a comprehensive and fundamental understanding is provided for capacitor‐related electrochemical energy storage devices and has a great guiding role for future development. Electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices with high‐power density such as capacitors, supercapacitors, and hybrid ion capacitors arouse intensive research passion. Recently, there are many review articles reporting the materials and structural design of the electrode and electrolyte for supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors (HCs), though these reviews always focus on individual supercapacitors or single HCs. Herein, the conventional capacitor, supercapacitor, and hybrid ion capacitor are incorporated, as the detailed description of conventional capacitors is very fundamental and necessary for the better understanding and development of supercapacitors and hybrid ion capacitors, which are often ignored. Therefore, herein, the fundamentals and recent advances of conventional capacitors, supercapacitors, and emerging hybrid ion capacitors are comprehensively and systematically summarized in terms of history, mechanisms, electrode materials, existing challenges, and perspectives. At the same time, it is believed that a comprehensive and fundamental understanding for capacitor‐related EES devices is provided in the review and has a great guiding role for future development.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are typical and commercially active electrode for supercapacitors due to their advantages such as low cost, good stability and easy availability. In the light of energy storage, supercapacitors mechanism is classified into EDLCs (electrochemical double layer capacitors) and pseudocapacitors. Multidimensional carbon nanomaterials (active carbon, carbon nanotube, graphene, etc.), carbon-based composite and corresponding electrolyte are the critical and important factor in the eyes of researcher. In this minireview, we will discuss the storage mechanism and summarize recent developed novel carbon and carbon-based materials in supercapacitors. The techniques to design the novel nanostructure and high performance electrodematerials that facilitate charge transfer to achieve high energy and power densities will also be discussed.

Abstract:Metal–ion hybrid capacitors (MHC), which provide both high energy and high power density, play a key role as a bridge between the two energy storage methods of batteries and supercapacitors. The improvement of the electrochemical performance in these devices depends critically on the exploration of electrode materials which perform increased levels of energy storage. However, high‐capacity capacitive materials are much needed to match high‐energy battery‐type electrodes. The kinetics between the capacitor‐type electrodes and battery‐type electrodes should be balanced. Benefiting from nanoscience and nanotechnology, their performance level will meet the requirements of practical applications. Although many researchers have reviewed various types of MHCs, available articles in recent years still lack a comprehensive and systematic overview of electrode materials in MHCs. Herein, the progress made in the field of hybrid ion capacitors is systematically reviewed, focusing on lithium, sodium, potassium, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum–ion hybrid capacitors. Initially, the device assembly modes and the charge storage mechanisms of MHCs are described. Subsequently, recent advances in electrode materials and pretreatment techniques for MHCs are highlighted. Finally, the challenges associated with MHCs are discussed and the continuing research directions are highlighted.

The effects of pH in the electrolyte solution on the stability of Li-ion intercalation reaction, the evolution potential of oxygen, and the specific capacity of both the Li-ion intercalated compound and AC electrode materials were intensively investigated by cycling voltammetry and charge/discharge tests in 1 M Li2SO4 solutions with various pH values from pH 7 to 13. LiMn2O4 shows stable Li-ion intercalation in the solution over pH 7, LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 over pH 11, and LiCoO2 over pH 9. Under optimal conditions, the specific energy, rate capability, and cycling performance of hybrid cells based on the three kinds of positive electrodes and AC negative electrode were compared. There was no significant difference in the specific energy among the three hybrid cells, but the hybrid cell based on the LiMn2O4 showed good cycling life and rate capability. LiCoO2 also had good rate capability but with poor cycling performance, and LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 showed good cycling life but with poor rate capability. (c) 2006 The Electrochemical Society.
