Abstract:The cultural translation view considers translation as a cross-cultural communication activity. The paradigm and thinking of translation will also have profound changes in different cultural contexts. It can be seen from modern translation studies that the translation circle has paid full attention to the cultural differences between the two languages, and due to the profound influence of culture, translators have gradually formed their own unique and personalized cultural understanding and translation concepts in translation practice. Starting from the influence of cultural context on Chinese-English translation, this article explores the cultural context in Chinese-English translation combined with practical work experience, and the understanding and practice of translation activities under the cultural translation perspective.

Abstract:The most common difficulty in translation studies has traditionally been the dilemma between the historical and synchronic approaches in the analysis and description of the culture of translation. On the one hand the culture of translation might be presented as the sum of various kinds of translated texts (repertoire of culture), on the other hand it might be described as the hierarchy of the various types of translations themselves. The first approach assumes plenty of languages for such description, in the latter one suggests only one language for the same representation. A cultural critic faces the same problems. In these perspectives the translation reveals important mechanisms of the performance of culture. First of all it is the semiotic interpretation of the theory of translation, introduced by the number of scientists beginning with R. Jakobson and including U. Eco who put together interlinguistic, intra-linguistic, and inter-semiotic translations, so crucial for the further understanding of culture. As a result, the general notion of culture might be described as the process of total translation. And secondly, the other valuable contribution to the theory of translation has been made by both M. Bakhtin and J. Lotman in terms of the synthesis of two traditions in semiotics of culture resulted in juxtaposing such notions as dialogism and autonomy — creolization, polyphony, counterword, and translation.

Abstract:Building on its author's long-standing advocacy of a culturally oriented conception of translation, this essay maintains that since the globalization in culture has made it necessary to view language as a means of cultural communication, to explore issues in cultural translation is to make an effective attempt at combining the linguistic-empirical study with the cultural/humanistic interpretation of translated texts, with a theoretically informed reconstruction of translation studies as the final goal of this move. The growing importance of translation in our age of globalization calls for a switch from a single linguistics-oriented definition of this practice to a plurality of culturally inspired definitions. Since an increase in information exchange and the rise of mass media have ushered in a global culture, the study of translation as a means of communication should break out of the confines of language and enter a broader cross-cultural context, so as to draw from researches in other fields of the humanities and social sciences. Exploring the significance of translation to Cultural Studies, the author also argues that to appeal to a "translation turn" may well help cultural studies get over the "crisis" it is experiencing currently.

Abstract:The task of the anthropologist is to take ideas, concepts and beliefs from one culture and translate them into first another language, and then into the language of anthropology. This process is both fascinating and complex. Not only does it raise questions about the limitations of language, but it also challenges the ability of the anthropologist to communicate another culture accurately. In recent years, postmodern theories have tended to call into question the legitimacy of translation altogether. This book acknowledges the problems involved, but shows definitively that 'translating cultures' can successfully be achieved. The way we talk, write, read and interpret are all part of a translation process. Many of us are not aware of translation in our everyday lives, but for those living outside their native culture, surrounded by cultural difference, the ability to translate experiences and thoughts becomes a major issue. Abstract:With its disciplinary distinction, cross cultural research in humanities always focuses on a lot of interactive relations and faces a series of the conflict of interpretations. It is because there is asymmetry between encoding of other text and decoding of local researcher. The author emphasizes three key issues: 1) the starting point of cross cultural research should be "political correctness" toward "cultural correctness" based on pure subjectivity; 2) "fusion of horizons" in hermeneutics can be applied to cross cultural research in humanities and increases interactions from contextualization through otherization to fusion of contexts; 3) an inter-interpretation between meaning and significance results in productiveness of other text by which dialect of construction and negotiation could be achieved.

Abstract:As an important part of Chinese culture, the translation of Minnan culture into foreign languages is of great significance for people all over the world to understand China’s traditional culture. Taking the Chinese-English translation of Minnan culture as an example, this paper discusses the problems existing in the foreign translation of Minnan culture and the countermeasures. Bassnett’s cultural translation theory provides theoretical guidance for this paper, emphasizing that translation is not only the transformation of language, but also the transmission and exchange of cultural information. This paper first introduces Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, then analyzes the characteristics of Minnan culture and the challenges it faces in foreign translation, and then puts forward various translation methods of Minnan culture, including transliteration with annotations, literal translation with annotations, free translation with annotations etc. Finally, it looks forward to the development prospect of Minnan culture foreign translation and puts forward suggestions for future research.

Abstract:This article discusses the importance of translation from the perspective of cultural communication, the relation between cultural communication and translation which are co- existent. The three forms of semiotic expression, i.e. sound, object and word can be expressed in terms of translation. The similarities between cultural communication and translation can be expressed in the common form of language and semiotics, apparent intentionality, and the dependence of fi eld and interactivity. According to these characteristics, we can consider translation beyond language and carry out interdisciplinary translation studies on a higher cultural dimension, so as to achieve even greater creativity and practicality in the fi eld of cultural semiotics.
Treatment of Cultural Differences in Translation

Abstract:With more and more frequent interaction between China and the West, translation plays an extremely important role in communication. Translation is no longer viewed as simple linguistic transference between two languages; cultural factors should be taken into consideration in translation process. This paper tries to analyze how the cultural differences should be dealt with in translation process. Three concrete methods are proposed to deal with different kinds of cultural factors: literal translation with cultural explanation, loan translation, and faithful translation. It is the translator’s responsibility to choose the best strategy to render cultural differences. This paper emphasizes that translation shoulders the responsibility of making the original culture intelligible to the target reader and enriching the target culture. Therefore, when a translator is confronted with cultural factors, he/she must try his/her best to overcome the untranslatability caused by the incomparability between two cultures by choosing proper translation strategies. Only through this way, the translator could play the medium role in disseminating culture.

Abstract:By analyzing and comparing the sources and features of cultural approaches to translation studies in China and in Western countries, this article discusses research targets, methodologies and problems of cultural research in Chinese translatology. It points out that new theories, including Western translation theories, broadens the horizon of China's translation studies while, at the same time, cultural research in China's translation studies must be based on China's own conditions and aim at solving China's own practical problems. In this respect, it suggests that Chinese researchers pay more attention to descriptive studies as well as proper assessment and analysis of translation activities and products.

Abstract:Based on observations of strategies adopted in Western interpretation and translation of the Chinese classic I Ching, this paper draws parallels between such strategies and Western developments in hermeneutics philosophy. In relation to this parallelism, three approaches of Western encounters with Chinese ancient literature – “conservative,” “dialogical,” and “radical” – will be identified. Cultural manifestations of such developments in twentieth century poetry, music, and the arts will be discussed.

In short, cultural differences. Bennett (1998: 3) explains that the fundamental premise of ‘the intercultural communication approach’ is that ‘cultures are different in their languages, behaviour patterns, and values. So an attempt to use [monocultural] self as a predictor of shared assumptions and responses to messages is unlikely to work’ – because the response, in our case to a translation, will be ethnocentric.

Abstract:Purpose To promote more open discussion on translating data, this paper aims to provide a critical and reflexive evaluation of the problems and issues that the author experienced with regard to qualitative data translation. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on personal experiences of translating Chinese women's narratives into English, the author demonstrates that qualitative data translation may have linguistic, cultural and methodological problems. Findings Researchers and translators should recognize the linguistic and cultural differences that data translation must negotiate. It is argued here that researchers and translators should preserve and highlight cultural differences rather than resembling the dominant values of the target culture by translation. A translator is an integral part of the knowledge producing system. The roles of the translator as both an inter‐cultural communicator and a data interpreter must be acknowledged in the research process. Originality/value This paper challenges common assumptions that data translation is merely a technical problem, and that a translator could “objectively and faithfully” transfer meanings of research data from source language to target language.

Abstract:With the emergence of a “cultural turn” in western translation researches since the 1970s, translators’ subjectivity has been highlighted, and some researchers have also been aware of the existence of intersubjectivity in translation activities; however, the views on the connotation and origin of intersubjectivity in translation are still controversial. This paper attempts to probe into the root causes for the existence of “intersubjectivity in translation” from a cognitive perspective, based on the fundamental “reality-cognition-language” principle in the Embodied Philosophy and cognitive linguistics. According to this principle, “cognition” mediates between “reality” and “language”. Language is formed on the basis of bodily experience and through the processing of human cognitive mechanism. Language is not a self-contained system, but closely related to the external world and human cognition. Furthermore, the author analyzes in depth Prof. Wang Yin’s viewpoint of “weakening phenomena” on “reality-cognition-language”, which sheds light on the study of intersubjectivity in translation. Qualitative research methods (including interviews and translation tests, etc.) have been adopted to collect relevant research data from carefully chosen respondents with different cultural backgrounds and bilingual competence, showing the manifestations of intersubjectivity in translation and the rationality of the kernel “reality-cognition language” principle in cognitive linguistics. In conclusion, fundamentally, it is the “commonness” and “differences” of individual subjects involved in translation activities (including the original author, the translator, the reader of the target text, and the translation initiator, etc.) together with the complicated interrelations among “reality”, “cognition” and “language” that cause intersubjectivity in translation. Intersubjectivity and subjectivity are interdependent, coexisting in the holistic field of translation.
