Abstract:Previous studies on earthquake-induced damages revealed a significant lateral-torsional coupled effect on the torsion of eccentric buildings, making them more prone to earthquake damage than noneccentric ones. In contrast to previous studies analyzing the lateral-torsional coupled effect of singlestory asymmetrical buildings or monodirectional eccentric buildings, this study focused on multilayer eccentric frame structures with bidirectional stiffness, analyzing their lateral-torsional coupled earthquake response during the transition from elastic to elastic-plastic deformation stage. To this end, nonlinear static analysis is performed using self-developed programs compiled with MATLAB. It was concluded that the natural vibration frequency of eccentric frame structure generally showed three-stage variation rules. Accordingly, three analysis stages were defined. The variation rules of displacement transfer function curves with non-coupled torsional-to-translational frequency ratio (Ω) and bidirectional eccentricity ratios ( b x and b y ) were investigated in detail. According to the analysis results, at Ω ≤ 1.1, the displacement transfer curves showed three-peak patterns. The translation frequencies along two principal directions were close to their torsion frequency, leading to the enhanced torsion contribution, which is unfavorable for the structure's torsional design. As the lateral-force-resistance members yielded, the first-order vibration changed to the translation along the force direction, and the second-order vibration corresponded to torsion. The bidirectional eccentricity ratios imposed different effects on the peak and shape of displacement transfer curves under different Ω values and elastic-plastic development stages. From the first stage to the third stage, the peak of the displacement transfer curve along the force direction increased, while peak heights of the displacement transfer curve along the non-force direction and the torsion displacement transfer curve dropped. The structure's response under the earthquake conditions tended to translate along the force direction.
