Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Ethnopharmacological relevance</h3><p>The genus <em>Sargentodoxa</em> comprises only one species, <em>Sargentodoxa cuneata</em> (Oliv.) Rehd <em>et</em> al., widely distributed in the subtropical zone of China. The plant is extensively used in traditional medicine for treating arthritis, joint pains, amenorrhea, acute appendicitis and inflammatory intestinal obstruction. Pharmacological studies show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, antimicrobial, and anti-sepsis activities.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aim of the review</h3><p>This review aims to summarize the information about distribution, traditional uses, chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of <em>S. cuneata</em>, as an attempt to provide a scientific basis for its traditional uses and to support its application and development for new drug development.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methodology</h3><p>Scientific information of <em>S. cuneata</em> was retrieved from the online bibliographic databases, including Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer Link, the Wiley online library, SciFinder, Baidu Scholar, China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI) and WANFANG DATA (up to March 2020). We also search doctoral dissertations, master dissertations conference papers and published books. The keywords were used: "<em>Sargentodoxa</em>", "<em>Da Xue Teng</em>", "Hong Teng", "Xue Teng", "secondary metabolites", "chemical components", "biological activity", "pharmacology", "traditional uses".</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Observations and results</h3><p><em>S. cuneata</em> is utilized as valuable herbal medicines to treat various diseases in China. Over 110 chemical constituents have been isolated and identified from the stem of <em>S. cuneata</em>, including phenolic acids, phenolic glycosides, lignans, flavones, triterpenoids and other compounds. The extract and compounds of <em>S. cuneata</em> have a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-sepsis and anti-arthritis effects, as well as protective activity against cerebrovascular diseases.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p><em>S. cuneata</em> has a rich legacy for the treatment of many diseases, especially arthritis and sepsis, which is reinforced by current investigations. However, the present studies about bioactive chemical constituents and detail pharmacological mechanisms of <em>S. cuneata</em> were insufficient. Further studies should focus on these aspects in relation to its clinical applications. This review has systematically summarized the traditional uses, phytochemical constituents and pharmacological effects of <em>S. cuneata,</em> providing references for the therapeutic potential of new drug development.</p>

Abstract:This is a review on the chemical constituents, pharmacology, toxicology and biosynthesis of Sphaerophysa. Eight compounds have been isolated from it, which include flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids and sterol. The pharmacological experiments have concluded that the total flavonoidal glycosides of Swainsonia salsula Taub. had the effect of anti-hypertension and the swainsonine was an inhibitor of lysosomal alpha-mannosidase. The biosynthesis of Swainsonine in fungus had been proposed and its precursor was L-lysine.
Unraveling the Molecular Mechanism of Aqueous Extract of Sargentodoxa Cuneata Against Ulcerative Colitis from Serum Metabolomics and Bioinformatics Perspectives

Abstract:Symptoms of ulcerative colitis (UC) are like “intestinal carbuncle” in Chinese medicine. The aqueous extract of Sargentodoxa cuneata (AESc) has good therapeutic effects on UC, but the underlying mechanism needs to be further elucidated. The mechanism of AESc against UC was studied based on metabolomics and bioinformatics in mice with UC. Dextran sodium sulfate was applied to induce a mouse model of UC. After the intervention of AESc, the general condition of the animals was recorded, and efficacy-related indicators was measured. Information on metabolites was determined. Multivariate analysis combined with bioinformatics methods were used to identify the differential metabolites. Furthermore, “metabolite-target-disease” network was obtained, and differential metabolites of UC were screened, and further analysis of the metabolites were performed. Molecular docking validation was also carried out. AESc improved general conditions such as blood in stool, hair of animals, and weight loss, reduced disease activity index scores and shortening of colon length in mice with UC. A total of 3445 serum metabolites were obtained, and 64 differentiated metabolites of AESc against UC were screened. Enrichment analysis showed that arachidonic acid metabolism, bile secretion, drug metabolism-other enzymes, and tyrosine metabolism were associated with AESc in the treatment of UC. In addition, based on “metabolite-target-disease” network, the serum metabolites cholylleucine, 9,10,13-TriHOME, birabresib, anthramycin methyl ether, trans-hexadec-2-enoyl carnitine, and lucidumol A were found to have the therapeutic potential for UC. Further, 14 core targets were obtained, and lipids and atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple immune-inflammatory pathways were associated with AESc for the treatment of UC. AESc corrects serum metabolic disturbances in UC mice, and multiple serum metabolites have therapeutic potential for UC. AESc may treat UC by regulating biological processes such as lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, thereby restoring normal physiological function of the intestine.
Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Phenolics and Phenolic Glycosides from Sargentodoxa Cuneata.

Abstract:Five new phenolic glycosides, Sargentodosides A-E, and two new dihydronaphthalene lignans, Sargentodognans F-G, together with thirty-two known phenolic compounds were isolated from the 60% ethanol extracts of Sargentodoxa cuneata. Their structures including absolute configurations were determined by spectroscopic analysis and electronic circular dichroism experiments. In bioscreening experiments, twelve compounds (22-26, 29, 33-34, 36, 38) exhibited antibacterial activities against S. aureus ATCC 29213 with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 2-516μg/mL. And compound 29 showed the highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus ATCC 29213 with MIC values of 2μg/mL, while the MIC values of levofloxacin was 8μg/mL. Three compounds (29, 33, 36) exhibited antibacterial activities against S. aureus ATCC 25923 with MIC values of 256-516μg/mL. Two compounds (29, 33) exhibited antibacterial activities against A. baumanii ATCC 19606 with MIC values of 128-516μg/mL. However, no compound exhibited antimicrobial activities against C. albicans ATCC 10231. Moreover, three compounds (10, 25, 36) exhibited significant inhibition of proliferation in the two cell lines Hela and Siha, and showed stronger inhibitive activity of these two selected cell lines than cisplatin in the cytotoxic assay. Thus, S. cuneata is a potential plant source for further research targeting bacteria and cancer diseases.

Abstract:Reviewing the studies on the chemical components and medicinal value.Philological method.Saffron is a conventional effective medicine in improving blood circulation and curing the bruise. The late of evidesnces indicate that saffron possesses anticancer activity against a wide spectrum of tumors, such as leukemia, ovarian carcinoma, colon adenocarcinoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, papilloma, squamous cell carcinoma, and soft tissue sarcoma. It has low biochemical toxic effects on animals. In addition, saffron can be used to cure coronary heart disease and hepatitis, and to promote immunity.Saffron is a highly valuable medicine. Abstract:Natural products, owing to their chemical diversity, biological activity, and historical success, continue to be a precious source of lead compounds and potential candidates for drug discovery. Siegesbeckia , in particular, presents a promising avenue for drug discovery due to its long history of usage in traditional Chinese medicine and its well-established clinical applications. Diterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, the characteristic metabolites of Siegesbeckia , have consistently attracted considerable attention in related scientific research because of their diverse structures and extensive range of bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Herein, we provide an overview of the phytochemistry, biosynthesis, pharmacological action, as well as clinical applications of Siegesbeckia . This paper will provide a valuable reference for advancing further research and development of Siegesbeckia .

Abstract:Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai is a perennial evergreen herb categorised within the Sarcandra Gardner genus under the Chloranthaceae family. Indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions of East Asia and India, this species is extensively distributed across China, particularly in the southern regions (Sichuan, Yunnan, and Jiangxi). In addition to its high ornamental value, S. glabra has a rich history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, evident through its empirical prescriptions for various ailments like pneumonia, dysentery, fractures, bruises, numbness, amenorrhea, rheumatism, and other diseases. Besides, modern pharmacological studies have revealed various biological activities, such as antitumour, anti-bacterial, anti-viral anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. The diverse chemical constituents of S. glabra have fascinated natural product researchers since the 1900s. To date, over 400 compounds including terpenoids, coumarins, lignans, flavonoids, sterols, anthraquinones, organic acids, and organic esters have been isolated and characterised, some featuring unprecedented structures. This review comprehensively examines the current understanding of S. glabra's phytochemistry and pharmacology, with emphasis on the chemistry and biosynthesis of its unique chemotaxonomic marker, the lindenane-type sesquiterpenoids.

Abstract:Stemmacanthae(Rhapontici) Radix is one of the commonly used traditional Chinese medicines.In this article,the studies on ecdysteroids in the medicinal plants of genus Serratula(5.chinensis S.Moore,S.strangulata Iljin,S.centauroides L.and S.coronata L.) and Stemmacantha[S.uniflora(L.) Dittrich and S.carthamoides(Willd.) Dittrich]were summarized,and the characteristics of chemical structures were investigated,to provide scientific foundation for their bioactive material base establishment and research development of relatve modern Chinese medicine.The chemical diversity of ecdysteroids in the above-mentioned medicinal plants were revealed,which might greatly contribute to the bioactivity of these medicinal plants.

Abstract:Cistanches Herba, the dried succulent stems of Cistanche species that are mainly distributed in the arid lands and warm deserts, has been widely used as a tonic for the treatments of kidney deficiency, impotence, female sterility, and constipation in traditional Chinese medical practices for centuries. Cistanche species are parasitic plants and their hosts are sand-fixing plants, such as Haloxylon ammodendron and Tamarix spp. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the Cistanche plants, since the wide cultivation of Cistanche plants and their hosts can not only supply the medicinal materials but also contribute greatly to the desert control. After decades of studies, diverse chemical classes, such as phenylethanoid glycosides, iridoids, lignans, and polysaccharides, have been disclosed to be the primary chemical constituents in Cistanche species, and antioxidation, neuroprotection, antiaging, vasorelaxation, hepatoprotection, and so on, act as their primary activities. Here, we made a review on the latest research progress regarding the chemical constituents and bioactivities of Cistanche plants.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Ethnopharmacological relevance</h3><p>Strobilanthes cusia (Nees) Kuntze (SCK, Malan), a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, has long applied to detoxification, defervescence, detumescence and antiphlogosis. "Southern Banlangen" (Rhizoma et Radix Baphicacanthis Cusiae, RRBC), root and rhizome of SCK, is widely used for treatment of many epidemic diseases. Malanye (Sourthern Daqingye), stem and leaf of SCK, is an antipyretic-alexipharmic drug frequently-used in southern China. Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, IN), a processed product of SCK, is always applied to dermatoses in the folk.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aim of the review</h3><p>In order to elucidate the historical uses, recent advances and pharmaceutical prospects of SCK, we summarized roundly in aspects of history, processing method, chemical constitution, quality control, pharmacological activity and toxicity. Some deficiencies in current studies and research directions in the future are also discussed. This is the first comprehensive review of SCK and its herbal medicines, which may be of some help for further research.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methodology</h3><p>Comprehensive analysis was conducted on the basis of academic papers, pharmaceutical monographs, ancient medicinal works, and drug standards of China. All available information on SCK and its herbal medicines was collected by using the keywords such as "<em>Strobilanthes cusia</em>", "Southern Banlangen", "indirubin", "tryptanthrin" through different electronic databases including NCBI Pubmed, Google Scholar, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure and so on. Pharmacopoeia of China and some ancient works were obtained from National Digital Library of China.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Result</h3><p>Medicinal uses of SCK were already described by famous ancient researchers. Because of vague description, plant species in some works cannot be confirmed. Literature demonstrated that multiple components including total 36 alkaloids and 35 glycosides, the main bioactive components of SCK, were found in SCK and its herbal medicines. Modern studies indicated that SCK and some of its components had multiple pharmacological effects including resistance to cancer, remission of inflammation, suppression of microorganisms, relief of dermatoses, and so on. However, studies on pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and quality control are still not enough.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>A number of reports suggested that SCK and its processed medicines could be promising drug candidates for multiple diseases especially promyelocytic leukemia, ulcerative colitis (UC) and psoriasis. However, bioactive activities of most components, especially glycosides should still be explored further. It is crucial to elucidate the in-depth molecular mechanisms, and pharmacokinetic characteristics of main components in those herbal medicines. Moreover, to ensure the effectiveness of clinical medication, future studies should undoubtedly give the priority to clarifying the effective compositions of SCK, and then a measurement standard of those indicators should be protocolled to establish a comprehensive quality evaluation mode.</p>

Abstract:: Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant widely utilized in folk medicine due to its significant pharmacological and nutritional properties. Cajaninstilbene acid (CSA), a stilbene compound derived from pigeon pea leaves, has been extensively investigated since the 1980s. A thorough understanding of CSA's mechanisms of action and its therapeutic effects on various diseases is crucial for developing novel therapeutic approaches. This paper presents an overview of recent research advancements concerning the biological activities and mechanisms of CSA and its derivatives up to February 2024. The review encompasses discussions on the in vivo metabolism of CSA and its derivatives, including antipathogenic micro-organisms activity, anti-tumor activity, systematic and organ protection activity (such as bone protection, cardiovascular protection, neuroprotection), anti-inflammatory activity, antioxidant activity, immune regulation as well as action mechanism of CSA and its derivatives. The most studied activities are antipathogenic micro-organisms activities. Additionally, the structure–activity relationships of CSA and its derivatives as well as the total synthesis of CSA are explored, highlighting the potential for developing new pharmaceutical agents. This review aims to provide a foundation for future clinical applications of CSA and its derivatives.

Abstract:ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Fructus Choerospondiatis is the dried and mature fruit of Choerospondias axillaris (Roxb.) Burtt et Hill. It has been used for a long time in Tibetan and Mongolian medicine, first recorded in the ancient Tibetan medicine book "Medicine Diagnosis of the King of the Moon" in the early 8th century. Fructus Choerospondiatis shows multiple pharmacological activities, especially in treating cardiovascular diseases.AIM OF THIS REVIEW: This paper reviews the progress in research on the botanical characteristics, traditional uses, chemical constituents, pharmacological activity, clinical studies, and quality control of Fructus Choerospondiatis. This review aims to summarize current research and provide a reference for further development and utilization of Fructus Choerospondiatis resources.METHOD: The sources for this review include the Pharmacopeia of the People's Republic of China (2020), theses, and peer-reviewed papers (in both English and Chinese). Theses and papers were downloaded from electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, SciFinder, Scholar, Springer, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure.The search terms used were "Choerospondias axillaris", "C. axillaris", "Choerospondias axillaris (Roxb.) Burtt et Hill", "Fructus choerospondiatis", "Guangzao", "Lapsi", and "Lupsi".RESULTS: Fructus Choerospondiatis contains polyphenols, organic acids, amino acids, fatty acids, polysaccharides, and other chemical components. These ingredients contribute to its diverse pharmacological activities such as antioxidant activity, protection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, anti-myocardial fibrosis, heart rhythm regulation, anti-tumor, liver protection, and immunity enhancement. It also affects the central nervous system, with the ability to repair damaged nerve cells.CONCLUSION: Fructus Choerospondiatis, with its various chemical compositions and pharmacological activities, is a promising medicinal resource. However, it remains under-researched, particularly in pharmacodynamic material basis and quality control. These areas require further exploration by researchers in the future.

Abstract:The entire plant Salvia cavaleriei H. Lév. (Lamiaceae) is used as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Its leaves are edible, and the flowers can be soaked in water to make a health-care tea. In an effort to find natural bioactive chemical components, twelve undescribed germacrane-type sesquiterpenoids, salcavalins A-L, were isolated from the whole plant of S. cavaleriei and were identified as analogs. This is the first study to isolate highly oxygenated germacrane-type sesquiterpenoids from this plant. The structures of these undescribed compounds were elucidated by various spectroscopic methods, and their absolute configurations were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis with Cu Kα radiation and electronic circular dichroism calculations. The biological activity of these undescribed compounds on the production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in lipopolysaccharide induced NR8383 cells was evaluated, and salcavalins I and K showed anti-inflammatory activity to some extent. Salcavalins A-C, F and L were found to be neuroprotective with antiparkinsonic potential in a nematode ( Caenorhabditis elegans ) model. In addition, salcavalins F and I displayed marked phytotoxic activity against radish seeds at a low concentration of 50 ppm. Our findings provide scientific justification to show that bioactive sesquiterpenoids from the edible herb have anti-inflammatory in vitro, neuroprotective and phytotoxic activities.

Abstract:Picrasma quassioides (D.Don) Benn is a member of the Simaroubaceae family, which has a long history of medicinal use in China, the composition of compounds is complex, mainly including alkaloids, lignin, triterpenoids, and other compounds. As a traditional Chinese medicine, P. quassioides has pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antiviral, blood pressure lowering and anticancer. Scholars at home and abroad have been studying P. quassioides for about 50 years. In the present review, the research status of the chemical composition, pharmacological activity and pharmacokinetics of P. quassioides was provided, as a reference for further developing the value of P. quassioides.

Abstract:Background: Sarcandra is one of the five genera of Chloranthaceae, which has a long history of medicinal use and high medicinal value, with excellent therapeutic effects on liver cancer, pneumonia, colitis, bone fractures, and dysentery. Among its species, Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai has been extensively utilized in diverse compound formulations, toothpaste, tea, daily commodities, as well as health supplements. Therefore, in terms of its medicinal properties and effectiveness, the genus has considerable potential for development and utilization. Purpose: This paper presents a systematic review of the botany, ethnomedicine, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of Sarcandra plants, aiming to deepen our understanding of Sarcandra properties further, to provide a reference for the rational utilization of Sarcandra plant resources, and at the same time laying a foundation for the development of new medicines and the study of natural products. Methods: In this paper, we collected information about Sarcandra species through PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Baidu Scholar, Google Scholar, CNKI, and other databases using the keywords Sarcandra, botany, traditional uses, chemical compounds, pharmacology and toxicology. Its botanical-related information was obtained through the Flora of China (www.iplant.cn). Results: Three species of Sarcandra plants worldwide are distributed from eastern Asia to India. This genus has a long history of medicinal uses, high medicinal value, and a wide range of applications. At present, 462 compounds have been isolated and identified from Sarcandra plants, and their diversity contributes to the diversity of the pharmacological effects of Sarcandra plants. Numerous studies have shown that Sarcandra plants exhibit significant antitumor, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antiviral, antithrombocytopenia, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects, with low toxicity and side effects. However, most studies have focused on Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai and studies on other plants of the genus have yet to be explored. Conclusions: Sarcandra plants have a wide range of clinical uses and diverse chemical compounds. However, the main research has been concentrated on Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai, and future research should explore the medicinal properties of other Sarcandra plants to expand their potential clinical applications. Meanwhile, the pharmacological activities of compounds from Sarcandra species need to be studied in greater depth and detail to provide an appropriate scientific basis for developing new drugs and natural product research.

Abstract:Sarcandra glabra, a medicinal plant in family Chloranthaceae, has been taken as an important raw material for multiple Chinese patent drugs due to its diverse indications. Considering the diversified chemical constituents and rich biological activities of S. glabra, numerous phytochemical and pharmacodynamic investigations were conducted to explore the material basis for its medicinal use. It has been found that its main chemical constituents were sesquiterpenoids, sesquiterpenoid polymers, phenolic acids, coumarins, and flavonoids. As revealed by pharmacological research, it possesses multiple biological activities like anti-inflammation, anti-bacteria, anti-tumor, anti-oxidation, and neuroprotection. Some unreported novel structures, including polymers of lindenane sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes, sesquiterpene trimers, and adducts of flavonoids and monoterpenes, have been identified from S. glabra in recent years. Moreover, biological studies relating to its anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant activities have been deepened. This paper reviewed the chemical constituents and bioactivities of S. glabra explored over the past ten years, so as to provide a scientific basis for further development and utilization of this plant.

Abstract:Curcumae Radix (CuR) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been used in China for more than 1,000 years. It has the traditional efficacy of activating blood and relieving pain, promoting qi and relieving depression, clearing heart and cooling blood, and promoting gallbladder and removing jaundice. Based on this, many domestic and foreign scholars have conducted systematic studies on its chemical composition, pharmacological effects, toxicity and quality control. Currently, 246 compounds, mainly including terpenoids and curcuminoids, have been isolated and identified from CuR, which has pharmacological activities, including antitumor, anti‐inflammatory and analgesic, antidepressant, hepatoprotective, hemostatic, hematopoietic, and treatment of diabetes mellitus. In modern clinical practice, CuR is widely used in the treatment of tumors, breast hyperplasia, hepatitis, and stroke. However, the generation of toxicity and clinical application of CuR and Caryophylli Flos, the determination of the concoction process of artifacts, the determination of specific Quality Marker, and the establishment of the quality control system of CuR, are problems that need to be solved urgently at present. This review systematically summarizes the literature on CuR botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity and quality control. We hoped this paper will provide a valuable reference for further research and development of CuR.
