Abstract:In recent years, surfactants from modified lignin have received growing attention. Lignin is an inevitable by-product of the chemical manufacturing processes for cellulose and pulping. Furthermore, this class of chemical has vast availability around the world. Lignin modified surfactant is usually prepared by grafting various hydrophobic or hydrophilic groups onto the aromatic nucleus. Due to the interactions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups on the interface, lignin modified surfactants present favorable surfactivity, which may be potentially proper for the decontamination of secondary fiber recovery. In this paper, lignin materials, alkali lignin (AL) and lignosulphonate (LS), were prepared through liquefaction treatment into lignin-phenols products. Then, hydrophobic modified LS and hydrophilic modified AL were ordinal synthesized with epoxy chloropropane then with laurinol and polyglycol. The surface tension, watersolubility and HLB value of the productions were characterized. Then the surfactants were applied to the deinking of secondary fiber in flotation process under weak alkali conditions. And the experiments by using the lignin products combined with other nonionic and anionic surfactants were also carried out. Evaluation and comparison were made through the goals of brightness and deinking efficiency. The results showed that the increment of brightness for OMG flotation were 11.04 and 10.61% ISO and the deinking efficiency were 60.85% and 53.06% by individually taking modified AL and LS as deinking agent. Under the condition of the two lignin surfactants mixed with nonionic and anionic surfactants, the results would be improved. The brightness was increased 10.65 and 12.32% ISO and the ratio of deinking was 68.66% and 60.82%. Furthermore, the trials of adding mineral clay to the combined agents were investigated. It was found that it had no negative influence on the deinking results. But, the state of the deinking agent with clay was powder. That means it would be more convenient for the final products in transporting and quantificational application. The results of this study indicated that the surfactants from modified lignin-phenols were fitting to remove OMG ink in weak alkali conditions.
