Abstract:ZnO particles were prepared by the molten salt method.Their growth mechanism and the influences of the preparation conditions on their crystal quality and optical properties were studied in detail. It was found that the ZnO particles prepared were single crystals with a hexagonal wurtzite structure.Their growth mechanism comprises Ostwald ripening and oriented attachment. Moreover, the calcining condition had great influence on both the crystal quality and the photoluminescence property of the particles.High-crystal-quality ZnO particles with some oxygen vacancy defects, which possessed strong green emissions, could be prepared by being calcined in the Ar atmosphere with negative pressure at high temperatures.Although the density of the oxygen vacancy defect could be decreased by calcining the particles in the air ambience with normal atmospheric pressure, the stress and many other defects were introduced into the particles due to their rapid growth, which caused the degradation of the grain's crystalline quality and thus resulted in a poor photoluminescence property.
