Magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis

Abstract:Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging in constritive pericarditis (CPC). Methods A total of 18 cases of CPC were collected and their MRI manifestations were conducted to analyze the characters of the thickness of pericardium, inferior vena cava, diameter of the two atriums and ventricle. And 20 normal volunteers were collected as control group. Results The ventricular septum swing was found in 14 cases. In 12 cases that underwent contrast enhanced MRI, 3 cases were presented delay -enhancement of pericardium. Compared with control group, the short diameters of right ventricle of CPC group were shorter, the ratios of long diameter and short diameter were greater, the thickness of pericardium were thicker, the inferior vena cava were wider, the anterior -posterior diameter, left-right diameter and long diameter of left atrium, the left-right diameter and long diameter of right atrium were greater, the differences were statistically significant (t =5.72, -4.26, -8.26, -9.67, -7.77, -3.41, -2.75, -5.61, -9.40, P < 0.05). The right ventricular shapes of 7 cases got variant seriously which presented siphonate, and their short diameters of right ventricle were shorter, the ratio of long diameter and short diameter were greater and the right ventricles ejecting fraction were lower compared with the others. The differences were statistically significant (t =-3.70, 3.23, -2.85, P < 0.05). Conclusions MRI was the ideal examination of diagnosing constrictive pericarditis.
