Abstract:The network for the traditional Confucianist edification,composed of schools and social organizations,lasted for hundreds of years because it was suitable for the long-standing small-scale peasant economy in the feudal society.However,the Opium War changed the situation.As a result,the time-honored edification system was challenged in the unprecedented situation in modern China.Its structure and philosophical ideas had to become flexible and even split because of the change of the social foundation and the inundation of Western learning. Therefore,the old knowledge system and the new one mixed and co-existed at the same time.On the one hand,the traditional edification kept the same Confucianist doctrines that were still interpreted,recited in the private schools and observed in people's daily practice because there was little change in the rural economy during the foreign interference.On the other hand,factors of modernization and semi-capitalism inwardly increased in the cities.Some sober-minded scholar-officials,under the circumstance of the powerful foreign attack,began to self-examine and criticize such traditional ideas as ″taking righteousness more seriously than benefit″,″paying more attention to morality than material things″,and questioned ″the kingly way and edification″ which had lasted for more than a thousand years.The reformers of the late Qing Dynasty and the missionaries promoted the spread and acceptance of Western learning.Besides,the school promotion policies,the establishment of new educational systems and the abolishment of the imperial examination system in the late Qing Dynasty continuously and completely destroyed the firmly established system of the edification of Confucianism.In fact,the dual structure of the social economy and the inherent reform of the educational system were the deep-seated causes which finally brought the edification system to an end.Therefore,studying the disintegration of the system of the traditional edification of Confucianism is beneficial to the understanding of the complexity and characteristics of the edification in the modern times as well as the moral education and reconstruction of spiritual civilization in China today.
