Abstract:Jensen’s inequality and extended Jensen’s inequality are two important integral inequalities when problems of stability analysis and controller synthesis for time-delay systems are considered. The extended Jensen’s inequality introduces two additional free matrices and is generally regarded to be less conservative than Jensen’s inequality. The equivalence between Jensen’s inequality and extended Jensen’s inequality in bounding the quadratic term −h∫t−htẋT(s)Zẋ(s)ds in Lyapunov functional of time-delay systems is presented and theoretically proved. It is shown that the extended Jensen’s inequality does not decrease the lower bound of this quadratic term obtained using Jensen’s inequality, and then it does not reduce the conservativeness though two additional free matrices M1 and M2 are involved.

Abstract:Petersen's lemma on matrix uncertainty is commonly used in the analysis and design for uncertain systems with time-varying norm-bounded uncertain parameter. In this note, Petersen's lemma is extended to the case where the uncertain inequality contains two uncertain matrix pairs. The condition is given such that the Petersen's lemma gives a necessary and sufficient condition. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Let $(X,\tau_X)$ and $(Y,\tau_Y)$ be locally convex spaces, $c(X)$ and $c(Y)$ the $X$-valued and $Y$-valued convergent sequence spaces, respectively, $A_{ij} \in L(X,Y)$ and $A=(A_{ij})$ an operator-valued infinite matrix. In this paper, we characterize the matrix $A=(A_{ij})$ which transforms $c(X)$ into $c(Y)$. As its applications, we introduce the chi function $\chi$ on locally convex spaces, and show that a conservative matrix is conull if and only if $\chi$ (A)=0$.

Abstract:Based on the concept of compatibility, the compatibility and relations between compatibility and consistency of weighted geometric average combination judgement matrix are studied. It shows that the combination judgemen matrix has satisfactory compatibility not only with its characteristic matrix, but also with characteristic matrix consisted of weighted geometric average combination vector, under weaker conditions. This offers a thoretical basis on applying the method of group decision making. Finally, an example shows the correctness of the results.

Abstract:Fuzzy judgement matrix is the important preference information provided by a decision-maker. Based on the complementary characteristics of fuzzy judgement matrix, a new compatibility index is proposed in this paper. This index is simple and easy to calculate. The relations between compatibility and consistency of fuzzy judgement matrices are also studied. A criterion of satisfactory compatibility is given. Finally, an example shows effectiveness of this index.

Abstract:The weighted arithmetical mean complex judgement matrix (WAMCJM) is the most common method for aggregating group opinions, but it has a shortcoming, namely the WAMCJM of the perfectly consistent judgement matrices given by experts canot guarantee its perfect consistency. An upper bound of the WAMCJM's consistency is presented. Simultaneously, a compatibility index of judging the aggregating extent of group opinions is also introduced. The WAMCJM is of acceptable consistency and is proved provided the compatibilities of all judgement matrices given by experts are smaller than the threshold value of acceptable consistency. These conclusions are important to group decision making.

Properties of Pseudocontractive Updates in Convex Optimization

Abstract:Many convex optimization methods are conceived of and analyzed in a largely separate fashion. In contrast to this traditional separation, this manuscript points out and demonstrates the utility of an important but largely unremarked common thread running through many prominent optimization methods. In particular, we show that methods such as successive orthogonal projection, gradient descent, projected gradient descent, the proximal-point method, forward-backward splitting, the alternating direction method of multipliers, and under- or over-relaxed variants of the preceding all involve updates that are of a common type --- namely, the updates satisfy a property known as pseudocontractivity. Moreover, since the property of pseudocontractivity is preserved under both composition and convex combination, updates constructed via these operations from pseudocontractive updates are themselves pseudocontractive. Having demonstrated that pseudocontractive updates are to be found in many optimization methods, we then provide a unified basic analysis of methods with pseudocontractive updates. Specifically, we prove a novel bound satisfied by the norm of the difference in iterates of pseudocontractive updates and we then use this bound to establish that the error criterion $\left\Vert x^{N}-Tx^{N}\right\Vert ^{2}$ is $o(1/N)$ for any method involving pseudocontractive updates (where $N$ is the number of iterations and $T$ is the iteration operator).

Abstract:This paper first reveals the relation between scales and the consistency of judgement matrices.Then we construct 75000 judgement matrices that are neither random nor illogical and prove that these judgement matrices can be classified into 54 equivalents.By computing the consistency index of these judgement matrices,we find that 9/9～9/1 scale,10/10～18/2 scale and power scale are better than 1-9 scale.The result is of importance to the analytic hierarchy process.

Abstract:It is important to study idempotent matrix and the linear combination of them in matrix theory and statistics. Under the condition of,let A be an idempotent matrix and B be an arbitrary complex matrix,then the sufficient and necessary conditions are given in which the linear combination is an idempotent matrix.And the results are directly used to obtain the following conclusions:When A and B are idempotent matrixes,the conditions of the sum,difference,product of A and B are still as idempotent matrix;The relationship of the image of linear transformation and kernel of A and B's sum,difference,product are respective with the image of linear transformation and kernel of A and B.Let A be an idempotent matrix and B be an arbitrary complex matrix,the sufficient and necessary conditions are given in which the image of linear transformation is obtained and kernel of A is invariant subspace of B.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of the operation law of the generalized inverse. The concepts of the mixed first and second absorption laws about the generalized inverse are proposed. By using the concept of generalized Schur complement and the matrix rank method, the extremal ranks of matrix expressions which are associated with the mixed second absorption law are investigated, and the formulas of the maximal and minimal ranks of these matrix expressions are derived. Furthermore, the necessary and sufficient conditions of the mixed second absorption laws on {1}-inverse and {1, 3}- inverse, {1}-inverse and {1, 4}-inverse are established by using these formulas.

Abstract:Abstrcat Fuzzy judgement matrix is a kind of important preference information form provided by (decision) maker. Abstract:This work is motivated by a conjecture of Che et al. (J Optim Theory Appl 168:475–487, 2016) which says that if the feasible region of a tensor complementarity problem is nonempty, then the corresponding optimization problem has a solution. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, we show several sufficient conditions for the solution existence of the optimization problems corresponding to polynomial complementarity problems. Consequently, some results for tensor complementarity problems are obtained. Second, we disprove the conjecture by giving a counterexample.
Combining Combination Properties: An Analysis of Stable Infiniteness, Convexity, and Politeness

Abstract:We make two contributions to the study of theory combination in satisfiability modulo theories. The first is a table of examples for the combinations of the most common model-theoretic properties in theory combination, namely stable infiniteness, smoothness, convexity, finite witnessability, and strong finite witnessability (and therefore politeness and strong politeness as well). All of our examples are sharp, in the sense that we also offer proofs that no theories are available within simpler signatures. This table significantly progresses the current understanding of the various properties and their interactions. The most remarkable example in this table is of a theory over a single sort that is polite but not strongly polite (the existence of such a theory was only known until now for two-sorted signatures). The second contribution is a new combination theorem showing that in order to apply polite theory combination, it is sufficient for one theory to be stably infinite and strongly finitely witnessable, thus showing that smoothness is not a critical property in this combination method. This result has the potential to greatly simplify the process of showing which theories can be used in polite combination, as showing stable infiniteness is considerably simpler than showing smoothness.

Abstract:In the first part of this study, a convex-constrained penalized formulation was studied for a class of constant modulus (CM) problems. In particular, the error bound techniques were shown to play a vital role in providing exact penalization results. In this second part of the study, we continue our error bound analysis for the cases of partial permutation matrices, size-constrained assignment matrices and non-negative semi-orthogonal matrices. We develop new error bounds and penalized formulations for these three cases, and the new formulations possess good structures for building computationally efficient algorithms. Moreover, we provide numerical results to demonstrate our framework in a variety of applications such as the densest k-subgraph problem, graph matching, size-constrained clustering, non-negative orthogonal matrix factorization and sparse fair principal component analysis.

Abstract:The consistency of pair-wise comparison matrix is a serious challenge for the multiple-criteria decision-making problem. However, existing methods are either too complicated to be applied in the revising process of the inconsistent comparison matrix or are difficult to preserve most of the original comparison information due to the use of a new pair-wise comparison matrix. In this paper, a discrete region-based approach is proposed to improve the consistency of the pair-wise comparison matrix. When the decision makers feel confused or uncertain, they could express their evaluation as a discrete region containing multiple judgments, instead of a single result. A new data structure, named as set-matrix, is designed to store the combinations of those multiple judgments. An iterative searching algorithm is designed to find the pair-wise comparison matrix with approximate optimal consistency from the set-matrix. The experiments show that: 1) the consistency is significantly improved when the experts apply the discrete region evaluation instead of the single evaluation; and 2) the users can find the matrix with approximate optimal consistency quickly exploiting the iterative searching algorithm.

Abstract:It is an important problem to test and improve the consistency of the comparison matrix in AHP. Owing to the shortcomings of existing methods, we applied the concept of into this realm, and put forward a new kind of optimal adjustment algorithm. It made use of the maximum eigenvalue and Frobenius-norm of the comparison matrix to define the possibility degree and satisfiability degree of that matrix, which could examine respectively the improvement extent and the degree of deviation between original matrix and the adjusted one. Then by combining the two measurements into a synthetical index: the possibility-satisfiability degree of the comparison matrix, the general effect of the adjustment could be embodied. Through this index accompanied with Saaty's CR standard, the direction and extent of the improvement would be controlled, and the optimal matrix with acceptable consistency could be available, which had preserved furthest the decision maker's primitive judgment information. The final example illustrated the flow and efficiency of the new method.
