Expression and clinical significance of osteopontin in thymoma

Abstract:Objective To detect the expression of osteopontin(OPN) in human thymoma and investigate its clinical significance.Methods The expression of OPN in 53 cases of thymoma tissues and 20 cases of non-neoplastic thymus(NNT) tissues were detected by immunohistochemical SP method.Combined with thymoma and NNT tissues,thymoma Masaoka clinical stage,thymomas WHO histological type,thymoma with myasthenia gravis(MG) or not,the differences of OPN expression in thymoma,NNT,different thymoma stages,thymoma types and thymoma with MG or not were compared.Results The positive rate of OPN in thymomas was significant higher than that in NNT(75.5% vs 15.0%,P < 0.001).The positive rate of OPN in thymomas of Masaoka clinical stageⅡ-Ⅳwas significantly higher than that of stage Ⅰ(90.9% vs 64.5%,P = 0.028).The positive rate of OPN in thymomas of WHO histological type B/C was significant higher than that of type A/AB(90.5% vs 65.6%,P = 0.040).No difference of OPN positive rate was found between thymomas with MG and without MG(81.5% vs 69.2%,P = 0.300).Conclusion OPN is remarkably correlated with the occurrence,histological type and clinical stage of thymoma,and no correlation was found in thymormas with MG.Testing expression of OPN will be helpful for predicting the clinical diagnosis and prognosis of thymoma.
