Abstract:Crystal morphology can significantly impact rheological, machining, and loading properties of materials and additionally the energy and safety of energetic materials. With the development of computation technology and the increasing requirement of shape-tailored energetic crystals, a high-efficiency morphology prediction method is highly desired. Thus, a timely summary of existing crystal morphology prediction models at the microscopic level and their applications to energetic compounds is implemented in this article to set a basis for comparing their advantages and disadvantages and establishing more accurate ones. In general, these models take into account more structural and thermodynamic factors with fewer or even no kinetic factors, resulting in more or less deviation from experimental observation. Therefore, more accurate morphology prediction models are expected to be constructed in the future, in terms of both macroscopic crystallization conditions and microscopic structures as well as big data.

Abstract:Abstract-The crystal morphology of orthorhombic lysozyme is predicted using the Bravais-Friedel-Donnay-Harker (BFDH) and the attachment energy (AE) models of molecular simulation software Cerius2 in vacuo. The morphology predicted by two models is approximately consistent. The morphology predicted by AE model is in good agreement with the morphology of crystals grown from solution at pH 6.5. The main crystal faces {011}, {101} and {110} are observed in morphology predicted by AE model. By cleaving revealable crystal faces in morphology predicted by AE model, surface chemistry visualization and theoretical analysis based on interaction of in intra-molecules or inter-molecules for the important morphological forms are performed. The result shows that steric hindrance and H-band interaction plays critical role for the plate-like morphology of orthorhombic lysozyme.

Abstract:The crystal morphologies of α-and β-HMX were predicted by using attachment energy(AE) and Bravais-Friedel-Donnary-Harker(BFDH) models.The important crystal surfaces are(020),(011),(10-2),(11-1),(100) for β-HMX and(040),(220) and(111) for α-HMX.The analyses of the crystal surface structures show that(100) and(111) are greatly polar,and(020),(011),(11-1) and(220) are polar,while(10-2) and(040) are non-polar.It can be predicted that(100) and(111) are the important crystal surfaces in the proton solvents with strong polarity,and the appearance area of(020),(011),(11-1) and(220) is increased,and the(10-2) and(040) surfaces diminishes or disappeares,while the contrary cases occurs in the non-polar solvents.

Abstract:Growing high-quality crystals with ideal properties is of great importance. The morphology of crystal is one key factor reflecting product quality, as it can affect the performance of products and downstream operations. In this work, the current state of crystal morphology modification is reviewed from different perspectives. First, the most widely used crystal growth models are discussed. Then, a variety of crystal morphology control methods, which include adjustment of crystallization operation parameters, addition of foreign molecules, change of different solvents, membrane assistance, the addition of external physical fields and the use of ball milling are summarized. As for applications, the control of crystal morphology has application potential in pharmaceutical and material fields, for example, energetic materials and semiconductor materials. Finally, the future development direction of crystal morphology regulation is discussed.

Abstract:A theoretical approach for the prediction of the growth forms of crystals is presented on the basis of the kinetics of crystal growth. To describe the growth morphology of crystals, the more precise relations between the relative growth rate of the crystal faces (hkl) R(hkl)(red) and habit-controlling factors are derived from the Burton-Cabrera-Frank (BCF) models, the Chernov model, and the two-dimensional crystal growth models. According to these established relations, the growth morphology of crystals is directly related to internal and external habit-controlling factors. Among these factors, the attachment energy E(hkl)(att), the surface scaling factor C-l(hkl)* and the molecular orientational factor t(hkl) play an essential role in controlling the growth habit of crystals. As the key external habit-controlling factors, C-l(hkl)* and t(hkl) depend on the structure of the interface, the composition of the system, and other parameters affecting the growth process. Correspondingly, E(hkl)(att) represents the influence of the crystal structure on the morphology of the crystal. To examine the validity of our formalisms, the morphology of paraffin crystals grown from n-alkane solutions and that of C-60 crystals grown from the vapor are predicted. The results are in excellent agreement with observations. Within the framework of our approach, the relation R(hkl)(red)similar to E(hkl)(att) proposed in the Hartman-Perdok theory can be obtained by simplifying our formulas. Finally, morphological changes resulting from different experimental conditions are generally discussed based on our formalisms.

Abstract:Three theories about the relationship between crystal structure and form, Bravais rule, periodic bond chain (PBC), and the theory of growth basic-structural unit of negative ion coordinating polyhedron, were balanced and analyzed in this paper. The results indicate that using Bravais rule, combining with the effect of the form of crystal cell and the screw axis and the slippage face in structure, the crystal behaviour can be more accurately analyzed. On these grounds the crystal behaviours were classified.

Abstract:Based on a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient, an evolution equation of the crystal elastic deformation gradient for ductile single crystals is obtained. The constitutive equation for an elasto-viscoplastic crystal is presented for modeling the texture evolution and stress-strain response of polycrystalline materials using Taylor hypothesis. The effect of hardening model on the evolution of polycrystalline materials Al and Cu is analyzed.

Abstract:Deep insights into the chemical nature of surface free energy are important to achieve a rational design of solid materials with desired morphologies and functionalities such as electronic properties and catalytic performances. Practically, the determination of surface free energy and crystal morphology relies on density functional theory (DFT) calculations in a brute force way. In this work, we propose a new concept named generalized atomic valence to describe the atomic coordination environment of surface atoms. Guided by chemical intuition, we further develop a simple geometric descriptor with no adjustable parameters, the degree of surface undercoordination, to quantify the disruption of intermolecular bonds of arbitrary surface structures, which allows accurate prediction of surface free energies. Comparative calculations with DFT show that it can predict the relative surface free energy, even for the high-index and imperfect ones, and roughly estimate the crystal morphology for all group VIII transition metals other than Fe. Abstract:Compared with traditional simulation methods such as molecular dynamics and standard phase field model,phase field crystal model,a new modeling technique,has distinct advantages over traditional,which is that this formulation allows a description of material microstructure evolution on diffusive time scales and interatomic length scales.Application of phase field crystal model in the heteropitaxy has made great progress.The pure substances and binary alloys phase field crystal model and organizes the research shape in heteroepitaxial of phase field crystal model are briefly described.The further research direction and application prospect of the model in epitaxial thin films are pointed out.
Crystal morphology prediction of CL-20 and 1,4-DNI co-crystal at different temperatures

Abstract:Context The morphologies of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) and 1,4-dinitroimidazole (1,4-DNI) co-crystal under vacuum or solvent at different temperatures were predicted. The CL-20/1,4-DNI co-crystal has six important growth crystal planes: (002), (011), (101), (11‒1), (110), (111). The areas of (002), (101), and (011) planes account for a relatively large proportion, which are important crystal planes that affect the crystal morphology. The crystal habits at different temperatures were simulated. The simulation results showed that the crystal plane attachment energy of CL-20 and 1,4-DNI co-crystal increases with the increase of temperature, indicating that the increase of temperature is conducive to the growth of crystal planes. The aspect ratio decreases with the increase of temperature and the morphology of co-crystal becomes more spherical at a higher temperature. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experiment. The simulation results can provide guidance for the crystallization of CL-20/1,4-DNI to obtain a nearly spherical crystal morphology. Methods The CL-20/1,4-DNI unit cell structure was geometrically optimized by the COMPASS force field. The AE model was used to predict the morphology of CL-20/1,4-DNI under vacuum, resulting in the most morphologically important growth planes. Ethyl acetate was selected as the solvent. The interaction energy between the solvent and the crystal plane, and the attachment energies in solvent at 298 K, 320 K, 340 K, 360 K, and 380 K were predicted. The NVT ensemble is used in the molecular dynamics calculation process. The simulation step is 1 fs and the total simulation time is 500 ps. The Andersen thermostat is selected as the temperature control method. In the potential energy calculation, the atom-based and Ewald methods were selected to calculate the van der Waals force and the electrostatic interaction force, respectively. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:With the characteristics of molecular basic interaction and heat movement considered, molecule dynamics calculation was used to calculate the slice energy and attachment energy, and then the morphology of benzophenone crystals was predicted based on BFDH model and Hartman–Perdok theory. The theoretical predictions were compared with the practical morphology of benzophenone crystals grown from undercooled melt. It was found that the predicting morphology based on the slice energy criterion of Hartman–Perdok theory was more consistent with the practical morphology.

Abstract:Predicting the probability (ability) of materials to form expected regular atomistic arrangement (single crystal) is highly desired to judge the applicability of the newly designed materials, and a theoretical model is developed for this purpose. The model that has been proved successful in predicting the ability of single-component materials to form single crystals is further extended to two-component materials. The prediction can be easily implemented via common ab initio calculations, and may be widely used in general materials design.

Abstract:In order to analyze the influence of fluid on the growth morphology of crystals, a so-called interfacial analysis has been developed within the framework of inhomogeneous cell models. In this analysis, the effects of fluid composition (including solute, solvent, impurities, etc.) and concentration on the growth and morphology of crystals are explicitly taken into account. One of the key steps in this analysis is to identify the effective growth units in different crystallographic orientations and to calculate their concentrations. This involves a conformation analysis and calculation of the entropy barrier using a statistic thermodynamic approach. This technique has been applied with great success to predict morphologies of a variety of crystals growing from solutions, which cannot be predicted correctly using the conventional PBC analysis. An example of paraffin crystals grown from solutions is given. Based on similar principles, implications for the design of tailor-made additives are proposed.

Abstract:Crystallization of organic steric molecules often leads to multiple polyhedral crystal morphologies. However, the relationships among the molecular structure, supramolecular interaction, aggregation mode and crystal morphology are still unclear. In this work, we elaborate two model crystals formed by spiro[fluorene-9,9 & PRIME;-xanthene] (SFX) and spiro[cyclopenta[1,2-b : 5,4-b & PRIME;]dipyridine-5,9 & PRIME;-xanthene] (SDAFX) to demonstrate the feasibility of morphology prediction by periodic bond chain (PBC) theory based on interaction energy (IE) values in terms of single point energy. With non-directional van der Waals forces, only one PBC direction is found in SFX crystal, leading to the irregular 1D rod-like structure. Compared with SFX, the extra N heteroatoms in SDAFX can bring additional hydrogen bonds and some other interactions into the bulky molecular skeletons, inducing 3-dimensionally oriented PBCs to form the explicit F-face network in SDAFX which leads to the final octahedral structure. A simple and accurate method has been provided to quantify PBC vector on the supramolecular level in the organic molecular system, and the PBC theory has also been further demonstrated and developed in the morphology prediction of organic spiro-molecules.

Abstract:With the highly competitive development of chemical and pharmaceutical industries, mastering crystal growth is becoming increasingly necessary. Modern industrial manufacturers place high importance on the ability to grow crystals with a specific habit using tailored operating conditions. A detailed understanding of crystal growth is, therefore, vital for researchers in crystallography and crystallization to respond and realize this objective. Various models to predict crystal shape in the literature are reviewed here. The most commonly adopted are usually non-mechanistic and limited in their predictive power and utility, especially for products of industrial interest. Mechanistic models offer far more potential for rational crystal design, but require significant expertise to use and each new system studied typically requires additional investment. In this context, an automated implementation of mechanistic models (simulating and visualizing crystal growth under different environmental parameters) could eliminate this barrier to entry and promote widespread adoption to propel design of crystalline-based products into the next generation. With this need in mind, we have developed prototype software named ADDICT (Advanced Design and Development of Industrial Crystallization Technology), that enables an established spiral growth model to be applied to general systems of industrial interest. This proof-of-concept software provides an advanced theoretical framework to account for the solid state physics and surface chemistry, to guide experiments in a more efficient search of the design space for conditions that confer optimum functionality to the product. ADDICT calculates relative growth rates of crystal faces under the spiral regime, grown from vapor or solution, using information on the solid-state interactions that are organized into periodic bond chains. Solvent effects are principally accounted for by an interfacial modification of surface energies and the evolution of crystal habit under cycles of growth or dissolution can be predicted also. ADDICT has been tested for a variety of organic molecules, both centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric, resulting in successful predictions (examples for naphthalene, anthracene, paracetamol, lovastatin, D-mannitol, and α-glycine are presented).
Theoretical Study on Crystal Morphologies of 1,1-Diamino-2,2-dinitroethene in Solvents: Modified Attachment Energy Model and Occupancy Model.

Abstract:In this study, the growth morphologies of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethene (FOX-7) in vacuum and solvent conditions were investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The modified attachment energy (MAE) model and occupancy model were used separately to predict the crystal morphology by calculating relative growth rate of different crystal faces in H2O/NMP and DMSO/AC solvent system. The calculated results show that the (0 1 1) face and (1 0 1) face are the most important crystal face in both two solvents towards the MAE model and the occupancy model, respectively. Compared with that from the MAE model, the predicted morphologies from the occupancy model are in better agreement with the experimental results. Radial distribution function (RDF) analyses were employed to demonstrate that the hydrogen bonds and vdW interactions play the dominant role between solvent molecules and FOX-7 surfaces. The above results allow us to understand the role played by solvents and solute molecules on growth morphologies of FOX-7 crystals.

Abstract:Bisphenoidal shape of α-N,N'-diacetylchitobiose (α-(GlcNAc)(2)) monohydrate crystals was obtained from aqueous solution. Crystal morphology was studied by computer simulation. Theoretical morphologies calculated by classic models (a BFDH model, a surface free-energy method, and an AE model) deviated significantly from that from the experimental crystal habit. Therefore, a solvent effect was considered by introducing an interface layer model based on molecular dynamics simulation in order to bridge this gap. The results of the simulation showed that the calculated habit is much closer to the experiment, meaning that the interface layer model describes the solvent effect very well. This model may also be applied for other oligosaccharide systems to study the relationship among crystal morphology, crystal structure, and solvation effects.
