Abstract:This paper provides an overview and proposes cost-effective and efficient opportunities in improving power quality in Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) systems. In particular, an Electronic Inductor (EI) technique has been used in single drives to overcome the existing challenges in conventional frontend rectifiers even at partial loading conditions. Moreover, the effectiveness of the EI technique along with a phase-shifted current control in terms of improved grid current quality in multi-drive configurations is addressed. Furthermore, a novel DC-link current modulation scheme for multi-drive systems is proposed. Experimental and simulation results verify the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Power electronics based energy-saving technology has being developed rapidly in recent years. It is an inevitable trend for traditional load devices to be upgraded with power electronics technology. For example, more and more motor drives, which occupies a large proportion in total power load, change from asynchronous motors to Variable Frequency (VF) motor drives. Thus, the actual features of electrical loads, which plays an important role in power system analysis, will have obvious difference than that of before. Firstly, the operation theory of VF motor drive is studied in this paper, and its detailed model is also established in simulation software. Then, the curves of dynamic response curves under the disturbances of voltage and frequency in power grid are obtained. Finally the parameters of the static model of VF motor drive are identified.

Abstract:Electronic Inductor (EI) techniques are promising approaches for improving the grid-side current quality, and they are suitable for motor drive applications. In this paper, different EI topologies are investigated from the efficiency perspective, including the effect of employing Silicon Carbide (SiC) power devices. Moreover, the influence of partial loading on component sizing in Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs) is studied. Finally the analytical loss modelling of power switches is utilized for efficiency measurement. The theoretical analyses are verified by experimental benchmarking in an ASD system.

Abstract:As an almost standardized configuration, Diode Rectifiers (DRs) and Silicon-Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs) are commonly employed as the front-end topology in three-phase Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) systems. Features of this ASD configuration include: structural and control simplicity, small volume, low cost, and high reliability during operation. Yet, DRs and SCRs bring harmonic distortions in the mains and thus lowering the overall efficiency. Power quality standards/rules are thus released. For multiple ASD systems, certain harmonics of the total grid current can be mitigated by phase-shifting the currents drawn by SCR-fed drives, and thus it is much flexible to reduce the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) level in such applications. However, the effectiveness of this harmonic mitigation scheme for multiple ASD systems depends on: a) the number of parallel drives, b) the power levels, and c) the phase-shifts (i.e., firing angles) for the corresponding SCR-fed drives. This paper thus adopts a particle swarm optimization algorithm to optimize the power levels and the firing angles for multi-drive systems considering a fixed number of drives when practically implemented. The optimization is done to minimize the THD level of the total current at the point of common coupling. Simulations with the optimized results are carried out and laboratory tests on a two-drive system are provided to demonstrate the phase-shifting harmonic mitigation scheme. Issues concerning the practical implementation of the optimal results in multi-drive systems are also addressed.

Abstract:To save energy and raise the development efficiency of mechanical test system,the 2 000 kW AC drives test system is designed by using electric energy return and vector control technology,and the control software is developed based on Siemens WinCC software and S7-300 series PLC instead of the traditional combination of board and programming.Communications between WinCC and PLC are designed with MPI protocol.Using configuration and script together,the parameters setting,the data displaying,the report generation,the users management and the fault information management are implemented.PLC communicates with field devices by Profibus-DP to real time control devices and collect test data.Application results show that the designed test system runs steadily and reliably.This solution plays a certain reference role in the development of mechanical test systems.

Abstract:Even though low-voltage (LV) two-level adjustable-speed drives (ASDs) have become the primary choice for most motor control applications, their shortcomings in power quality and motor side characteristics do exist. Three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) ASDs are popular in medium-voltage (MV) applications with higher performances, but they are rarely adopted in LV industry due to their higher initial investment. Very little has been published in the complete quantitative comparisons between LV two-level and three-level ASDs. This paper is devoted to analyze the characteristics and system compatibility indices such as induction machine (IM) voltage and current total harmonic distortion (THD), inverter losses and efficiency, common mode voltage (CMV) and differential mode voltage (DMV) vs. long cable effects, for practical two-level and three-level ASD systems as pulse width modulation (PWM) methods, load, as well as switching frequency change. Analytical and simulation results are verified experimentally at a two-level and a three-level 40hp (30kW), 460V platforms coupled with a four-quadrant driven dynamometer system.

Abstract:The reliability and efficiency of medium and high voltage variablefrequency drives were enhanced by a state selfadaptive integrated operation monitoring and control system for a 1 600 kVA IGCT based variablefrequency drive. The system hardware includes an industrial computer with a 700 MHz Pentium Ⅲ processor with 128 MB RAM and an analogue input card with a conversion rate of 800 MHz per channel. The software was based on the state selfadaptive monitor and control logic presented in this paper. The average system scanning period was about 20 ms. During a field test, two analogue input card faults and two pulse generating system faults were all detected immediately by the system. In addition, the selfexcitation between the filter capacitor and the induction motor was recorded by the system. These results verified the system reliability and its positive effect on drive performance.

Abstract:This paper evaluates the efficiency of induction machines and measurement uncertainties arising from applying two editions of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) testing standard in industry. Machine testing standards vary in methodology, procedure and required instrumentation accuracy, therefore leading to significant discrepancies in the experimentally determined efficiency for the same induction machine tested to different standards as well as by different testing personnel. Five new induction machines with ratings between 7.5 and 150 kW are carefully tested using IEC 60034-2 (old edition), 60034-2-1 (new edition) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard 112 method B which is used as a benchmark. Furthermore, a 30 kW calorimeter is employed to validate power loss measurements and a realistic uncertainty estimation (RUE) is adopted to assess associated measurement uncertainties in power losses and efficiency, and then to assess the standard methods. Experimental results and uncertainty analysis confirm that IEC 60034-2-1 standard has improved over its previous version in defining a set of higher instrumentation accuracy, a more detailed testing procedure and more accurate models for core loss and particularly stray load loss (SLL). Overall, calorimetric methods justify the effectiveness of IEC 60034-2-1 in terms of providing reliable power losses and efficiency. Finally the need for a unified international induction machine testing standard is highlighted. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The speed regulation technology for energy conservation of pump and fan systems occupies an important position in industrial field. The paper focuses on the rapid development and research significance of speed regulation technology for energy conservation based on different permanent magnet adjustable speed drives (PMASDs). The development history and speed regulation scheme for energy conservation are introduced step by step. The features of theoretical model based on magnetic vector potential and equivalent magnetic circuit methods are presented and studied in the paper, which is benefit to select a suitable method for a specific drive. Several optimization methods of design parameters of PMASDs are given in the paper. The structure and operating principle of some new speed regulation scheme are described, and their advantages, disadvantages and feasibility of engineering application are analyzed. Finally, the proposed speed regulation technologies for energy conservation are summarized and classified from the aspects of magnetic circuit structure, permanent magnet rotor structure, conductor rotor structure, and the slip power conversion scheme. In a conclusion, the power-fed PMASD will be the future of energy conservation technology for the high-efficiency and low-cost large pump and fan systems.

Abstract:The adjustable speed drives (ASD) system based on the digital system is widely applied in the industrial field.This paper focused on three specific aspects about the discrete control strategy for the ASD system,i.e.,the discrete time matching method,synchronization of the input and limitation of the output.On this basis,three critical techniques applied in the high-performance ASD system for the induction motor,i.e.,DC pre-excitation,parameter identification and flux observer in the sensorless control,were effectively implemented.The improved synchronization and anti-interference solutions were also introduced,and the relationship between the global error and the iteration step was analyed.The experiments on the 55 kW and the 160 kW ASD systems validated the effectiveness of the proposed design methods.
