Abstract:The experimental study on the preparation of p-hydroxybenzaldehyde by p-cresol oxidation has been carried out in this work. In a 1 liter stirred tank reactor, the experiments were conducted by changing the agitation speed and air flow rate.-The results show that the rate of this oxidation reaction significantly depends on the mass transfer rate of oxygen. In order to improve the transfer process,a specially designed porous sparger was installed to generate very small gas bubble in the liquid phase. A simple empirical expression for this oxidation reaction was assumed,and the rate constant as well as the apparent activation energy were calculated from the Arrhenius plot by using the experimental data.

Abstract:In order to prepare p-hydroxybenzaldehyde by heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of p-cresol,catalyst of Co/Cu/γ-Al2O3 was prepared by impregnation with carrier γ-Al2O3,p-cresol was synthesized from p-hydroxybenzaldehyde.The effect of various reaction parameters on catalytic activity was discussed.The catalyst was characterized by TPR and the product was characterized by IR.It was found that when the catalyst calcined at 400 ℃ the catalytic activity was the best due to Co3+ → Co2+ reduction more easily occurs.Under suitable conditions(catalyst/p-cresol=3%~4%,NaOH/p-cresol =3/1,temperature=65 ℃)the highest yield of p-hydroxybenzaldehyde reached 45% in 10 h.

Abstract:The investigation of alkali acting as the key component during the liquid-phase catalytic oxidation of p-cresols to p-hydroxyl aromatic aldehydes is far from satisfied, thus a detailed exploration is presented. It was observed that the p-cresols were activated by alkali to form phenolate salt to ensure mild reaction conditions demonstrated by comparing the oxidation of p-cresol and its phenolate sodium. It was also found that excess alkali improved the selectivity of aldehyde by inhibiting the formation of dimeric side products in view of an analysis of the side products distribution. The alkaline alcoholic anion facilitates the 1,6-addition reaction between p-benzoquinone methide and solvent. Thus, more alkali was needed in solvents with high pKa values and high water content. The detection of trace acid during the oxidation of p-cresols suggested the phenoxy radical mechanism rather than the classic benzyl radical mechanism proposed for interpreting the oxidation of non-hydroxyl aromatic hydrocarbons. These conclusions contribute significantly to both the understanding of role of alkali during the reaction process and the mechanism study for the catalytic oxidation of cresols and non-hydroxyl aromatic hydrocarbons.
Synthesis of 1-Chloro-2,5-dimethoxybenzene

Abstract:1-Chloro-2,5-dimethoxybenzene was prepared from p-benzoquinone through chlorination and methylation with total yield of 78%. p-Benzoquinone was firstly converted catalytically to 1-chloro-2,5-dihydroxybenzene in the binary system of dichloroethane and hydrochloric acid at 35℃ with yield of 89%, then the final product was synthesized by methylation of obtained 1-chloro-2,5-dihydroxybenzene with dimethyl sulfate in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The intermediate 1-chloro-2,5-dihydroxybenzene and the obtained title compound 1-chloro-2,5-dimethoxybenzene were characterized by IR and GC-MS respectively. The results showed that their chemical structures were correct and the purity of title compound was over 98%.
A Novel Process for Synthesis of Benzaldehyde in Near-critical Water

Abstract:A novel process for synthesis of benzaldehyde in near-critical water (NCW) without using any catalyst was proposed. The experiments show that, without the help of catalyst, the cinnamaldehyde can be hydrolyzed to form benzaldehyde in the NCW. During the hydrolysis, the product yield first increases and then declines with the residence time of the reaction, and as the temperature increases, the reaction rate undergoes a dramatic increase, which results in shorter the reaction time for obtaining the maximum product yield. Over 57.0% (mole) yield of benzaldehyde could be reached under the optimized conditions of 280°C, 15 MPa and 6 h residence time. The kinetics of non-catalyzed hydrolysis of cinnamaldehyde in water at 15 MPa and temperature from 249°C to 320°C was investigated and the activation energy evaluated from the Arrhenius equation is 59.8 kJ·mol -1. Without introducing any other reagents in the reaction, the proposed novel process for synthesis of benzaldehyde in NCW offers not only an environmentally friendly, but also well conserved natural properties for benzaldehyde.

Abstract:An environmentally benign oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and metal dodecanesulfonate salts as catalysts was conducted under solvent-free condition by biphasic catalysis. Ferric tridodecanesulfonate showed excellent catalytic activity exhibiting complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 194.4mol/molcat turnover number (TON) and nearly 100% selectivity to benzaldehyde at ambient pressure and 90°C. This catalyst can be recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:A method to synthesis p-methoxybenzyl alcohol by reacting p-methoxybenzaldehyde with pd/C catalyst was studied.The effects of reactions conditions such as kinds of solvent,reaction pressure,amount of catalyst,concentration of reactant,reaction temperature,reaction time and reuse of catalyst on yield of p-methoxybenzyl alcohol and product composition were investigated.The results showed that the optimum conditions were as follows: ethanol solvent was 200 mL,reactant was 0.4 mol,amount of 5%Pd/C catalyst was 5%(mass fraction),reaction pressure was 0.3 MPa,reaction temperature was 30℃,reaction time was 8 h.After filtration,normal pressure distillation and reduced pressure distillation,a colorless and transparent liquid of p-methoxybenzyl alcohol was obtained,and the yield was close to 95%.

Abstract:Green process for liquid phase catalytic oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde has major advantages such as low cost,good operation safety,friendly environment,etc.The research progress in both H2O2 oxidation and molecular oxidation process of toluene was reviewed in the paper with the focus on the catalyst systems,such as cobalt catalysts,manganese catalysts,and vanadium catalysts.It is indicated that nano-gold catalysts supported on cobalt oxide or OMS-2 have potential application in the oxidation of toluene with molecular oxygen.

Abstract:Catalytic transformation of glycerol to value-added products has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. Among various transformations, selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen to dihydroxyacetone, glyceric acid, glyceraldehydes, and tartronic acid is challenging both from the viewpoint of academic research and industrial application. Herein, we review the recent progresses in the selective oxidation of glycerol under base-free conditions. Those catalysts widely reported for the selective oxidation of the terminal hydroxyl and secondary hydroxyl groups in glycerol, such as monometallic Au, Pt, and Pd NPs, and bimetallic Au-Pt, Au-Pd, Pt-Bi, Pt-Sb, and Pt-Cu, were compared and discussed in detail. The reaction mechanism over Pt-based catalysts, possible catalyst deactivation, and the corresponding improvements are presented. Further, the recent progresses in the continuous oxidation of glycerol in fixed bed reactors and its excellent selectivity in the formation of dihydroxyacetone are highlighted.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of alcohols to their correspondingaldehydesand ketones plays a fundamental role in many industries, but conventionalstrategies suffer from high costs, harsh reaction conditions, andlow energy efficiency. Here, we combine the p-xylyleneglycol oxidation with the hydrogen evolution reaction via an I-/I-3 (-) redox mediator inan electrochemical flow system where inexpensive graphite felt (GF)is utilized as electrodes. In comparison to traditional chemical oxidation,the electrochemical flow synthesis via the mediator I-/I-3 (-) could offer an outstanding p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde selectivity of 96.5% and aFaradaic efficiency of 84.8%. Besides, we realize the gram-scale synthesisof p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde at the current densityof 25 mA/cm(2) with low energy consumption because of theprepared catalytically efficient GF-Cu7S4 andGF-Pt electrodes. We explore different substrates and observe theflexible adaptability of our proposed flow synthesis strategy, demonstratingits potential for industrial applications. An electrochemical flow synthesis strategyis proposed hereinfor the gram-scale synthesis of p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehydewith low energy consumption.

Abstract:Bi2 O3 electrodes were successfully synthesized by coating and electrodeposition methods respectively. The properties of the composite electrode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X - ray diffraction. Furthermore, the acquiring benzaldehyde via the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol in water solution was studied. The Bi2 O3 electrode prepared by electrodeposition showed excellent electrocatalytic properties of selective oxidation, which exhibited the highest selectivity of benzaldehyde and the benzoquinone yield at the bias of 2 V.

Abstract:The main application,market requirement,production process and development process of o-Dihydroxybenzene and p-Dihydroxybenzene were introduced.The preparation technics and refine technics of catechol and hydroquinone from hydroxylation of phenol were emphasized.It was indicated that there were lots of the research of the catalyst interiorly and overseas.While the independent catalyst developed has predominant performance and lower cost,it was applied industrialization triumphantly.

Abstract:Pd–C catalyzed hydrogenolysis of benzaldehydes to methylbenzenes has been described to proceed via a ‘benzenemethanol pathway’. In this article, a novel ‘acetal pathway’ was first revealed by a systematic study when lower alcohols were used as solvents and a solvent-controlled highly efficient procedure was established.

Abstract:The process of synthesizing 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde by oxidizing paracresol was studied, in which Mn 2O 3 and sulfuric acid were taken as oxidant and reaction medium, respectively. The oxidant Mn 2O 3 is obtained by heating MnO 2 at 923K. With H 2SO 4 concentration of 7.0 mol/L, the optimum reaction was taken place at temperature of 318 K. And finally the product was separated with reactant by the addition of sodium bisulfite. The oxidation process fitted well to zero-order reaction and its activation energy is about 62.5 kJ/mol.

Abstract:The synthesis 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol is of great significance because of its wide application in industry, and the development of a highly efficient catalyst is necessary for the alkylation of p-cresol and tert-butyl alcohol. Here, an efficient and mild method was established. Caprolactam was chosen as the hydrogen-bonding acceptor; p-toluenesulfonic acid was employed as the hydrogen-bonding donor, and a deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared to catalyze the alkylation reaction. The structure of the deep eutectic solvent catalyst was characterized by 1H NMR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR). In addition, response surface design based on the Box–Behnken method was employed to optimize the alkylation reaction process parameters, and the study of reaction kinetics was also carried out subsequently. The recycle performance of the catalyst was evaluated by recovery experiments, and a good result was obtained. By drawing comparisons with the literature reported, we provide a mild method for the synthesis of 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol.

Exploration of Chemical Oxidation of p-Cymene

Abstract:The chemical oxidation of p-cymene was preliminarily studied by several oxidants. The conversion of p-cymene and selectivity of p-cymen-8-ol were both influenced by the factors such as, dosage of oxidant, dosage of sulphuric acid, reaction time, reaction temperature and solvent variety. The reasonable oxidation conditions were molar ratio of p-cymene to potassium permanganate 1:3, molar ratio of sulphuric acid to potassium permanganate 0.13:1, mixture of water and acetic acid (1:1, v/v) as solvent, reaction temperature 80 C and reaction time 9 h. The conversion of p-cymene and selectivity of p-cymen-8-ol were respectively 92.21 % and 69.65 % in the reasonable oxidation conditions. The by-products of p-cymene oxidation mainly included p-iso-propyl benzoic acid, p-isopropyl benzaldehyde and p-methyl acetophenone.
