Abstract:Port state control is regarded as the "last safety net" for maintaining maritime safety and environmental pollution prevention standards for foreign ships calling at or anchoring off international ports. Owing to limited resources, port states select and inspect ships that are more likely to be substandard under their inspection regimes and then record and publish the performance of shipowners and flag states. To encourage ships to comply with standards during subsequent inspections and improve new inspection regimes, we develop a game model analysing the strategies of port states, flag states, and shipowners. We then confirm the Nash equilibrium of the pure and mixed strategies. Subsequently, we investigate the influence of different reward and punishment conditions on flag states and shipowners and generate the following three results: first, differentiating flag state performance is crucial for port states to provide appropriate punishments or rewards to improve ship safety; second, reputation rewards have stronger impacts than reputation punishments for flag states; and third, reputation rewards or punishments from port states have little influence on shipowners' strategies, since shipowners are much more concerned about their profits.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a comprehensive model that addresses fleet deployment, speed optimization, and cargo allocation jointly, so as to maximize total profits at the strategic level. Our model considers a general fuel consumption function that depends on speed and load. To overcome intractability caused by nonlinear terms, we further separate fuel cost into two terms associated with ship speed and load to obtain a mixed integer linear programming formulation for approximation. Based on column generation techniques, we develop an iterative search algorithm that adaptively reorganizes the approximated formulation. We conduct extensive experiments using generated data sets from actual liner shipping services in different regions of the world to show the effectiveness of our approach as well as the significant impact of speed-load factors on fuel consumptions. Managerial insights are obtained by testing the model under different scenarios, which may greatly assist decision makers in the liner shipping industry.

Abstract:An appropriate description of freight rate behaviors is important to maritime forecasting and portfolio diversification in shipping freight markets. We employ general autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity-copula models to capture the dynamics and interdependencies among shipping freight rates. Using weekly data from 5 January 2002 to 24 March 2018, our main findings are first, Granger causality tests confirm the presence of one-way causality running from the dry bulk and the clean tanker freight rate returns to the container and the dirty tanker freight rate returns, respectively. Second, volatility persistence exists in individual shipping freight market and, in particular, it is much less persistent in the clean tanker freight market. Third, nonlinear dynamic interdependencies among freight rate returns are captured by performing time-varying copulas. The results not only deepen our understanding of freight rate behaviors but also offer new insights into portfolio diversification and risk management in the shipping freight markets.

Abstract:Greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry have been a major challenge in the sustainability of international transportation. This paper studied shore power management for river shipping, which has become increasingly popular in some international transport networks. We discussed stakeholders' incentives and concerns regarding shore power and found that vessel owners play one of the dominant roles in the wide implementation of shore power. Then, a mathematical model is developed to show the advantages of shore power by combining it with an analysis of the optimal oil inventory plan for vessels. When the plan of the oil inventory on vessels is well designed, using shore power could be more beneficial than oil even if the shore power has a higher price than the latter because using shore power can provide the vessel with more options to improve the oil inventory plan by reducing oil consumption during berthing and the number of refueling. Sensitivity analyses are conducted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of the parameters on the performance of shore power. Our policy suggestions and findings can shed lights on how to make incentive policies for a wider and easier implementation of shore power under international shipping.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate how congestions at ports affect the shipping freight market using a System Dynamics model, particularly in the liquified petroleum gas (LPG) maritime transportation market. We utilize maritime big data derived from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) for vessel tracking in the analysis. Our model captures the positive impact of port congestion, at its high level, on freight rate volatility when the shipping market is relatively in a tight condition. The proposed model provides insights into the shipping freight market development by innovatively considering port congestion level. The findings provide practical guidance for industrial practitioners to anticipate future freight rates based on the current congestion level and for port authorities to plan for infrastructure upgrades accordingly.
Analysis model of supply, demand and price of container shipping market

Abstract:The shipping velocity and cell capicity are two key factors for container shipping. A production function for container shipping was presented. In the function, the fuel per slot and per day and slots number were chosen as variables. According to this production function, the unit total cost and marginal cost of supplier can be calculated, so the supplier can adjust the supply according to the change of market. The results show that at a wide range, marginal cost is relatively insensitive to demand, the transport price is relatively stable, but when the fleet is fully utilized, the marginal cost and transport price will increase quickly.9 figs,7 refs.

Abstract:In this paper,we study the cooperation between the carriers in shipping industry based on evolutionary game model.It is proved that the carriers have inefficient behavior without the supervision mechanism.There is equilibrium which is cooperation versus non-cooperation between the carriers in high season of transportation,while there is equilibrium of non-cooperation versus non-cooperation between the carriers in low season of transportation.However,the cooperation equilibrium will be formed by the establishment of the supervision mechanism.The conclusion of this paper is important and useful to the operation of shipping industry.

Abstract:A game theory model is developed to study the overcapacity in shipping from ocean carriers' strategic behavior with regard to capacity expansion in a competitive market. Capacity expansion is found to be a rational decision in both peak and trough shipping markets. The benefit of expansion is greater when the competitor also expands, but this in turn leads to chronic oversupply and Prisoner's Dilemma. A numerical simulation is then applied to confirm the analytical results. This research explains the persistent low freight rate in shipping, and points out possible strategies for stakeholders in the shipping industry to maintain a healthy global logistics system in maritime transportation.
Maritime Safety Management Strategy Based on Game Theory Analysis

Abstract:The large demand for maritime transportation not only brings huge benefits, but also brings many problems and challenges, especially in maritime safety. Ship collisions, stranding, fire, oil pollution and other accidents cause huge damage to the society and shipping companies every year. Therefore, maritime safety management gradually becomes the common goal of coastal countries. However, maritime safety is a system engineering, which means each part should cooperate to ensure the safety. In this project, the authors focus on three major participants - Authorities, ship owners and ship safety management companies. Authorities will make scientific inspection policies to make ship owners obey the maritime rules and preserve the maritime safety consciously; ship owners will take measures to deal with PSC inspection and reduce the detention probability; ship safety management companies will reject the high-risk ship under New Inspection Regime (NIR) policy to ensure its fame. Bilateral games (complete information model) between every two of three participants were built and the Nash equilibrium solution to each game were found. Then a trilateral game among Authorities, ship owners and ship safety management companies is introduced. Based on the Nash equilibrium solutions, the authors can find the variation laws of optimal inspection rates. Meanwhile, several suggestions may also be put forward.

Abstract:Marine transportation is the most important transport mode of in the international trade, but the maritime supply chain is facing with many risks. At present, most of the researches on the risk of the maritime supply chain focus on the risk identification and risk management, and barely carry on the quantitative analysis of the logical structure of each influencing factor. This paper uses the interpretative structure model to analysis the maritime supply chain risk system. On the basis of comprehensive literature analysis and expert opinion, this paper puts forward 16 factors of maritime supply chain risk system. Using the interpretative structure model to construct maritime supply chain risk system, and then optimize the model. The model analyzes the structure of the maritime supply chain risk system and its forming process, and provides a scientific basis for the controlling the maritime supply chain risk, and puts forward some corresponding suggestions for the prevention and control the maritime supply chain risk.

Abstract:This paper studies the heterogeneous cooperation in a shipping company-freight forwarder service supply chain using game analysis.Recent shipping market reviews show the dominance of the shipping company over the freight forwarder,so we intend to explore the role of vertical cooperation with respect to transaction between a shipping company and a freight forwarder through advertising expenditures and brand investments.We analyze the pricing mechanism of shipping market and prove that the shipping company will provide a portion of the freight forwarder's advertising allowance if transportation price is high enough.The opportunistic behavior of the freight forwarder will prevail in Stackelberg equilibrium.The system profit is maximized for Pareto efficient in the cooperative game equilibrium.On the basis of the above study,the model has been extended to the research under dynamic environment.Both the shipping company and freight forwarder have the interior motivation to make additional investment in this case,and they will establish the stable and long-term cooperation.
A connectivity reliability-cost approach for path selection in the maritime transportation of China’s crude oil imports

Abstract:The focus of this paper is the selection of paths for the maritime transportation of crude oil. In addition to transportation cost, the nodes in a maritime transportation network are always affected by extreme events. Therefore, connectivity reliability must be considered during path selection. In this paper, uncertainty variables are introduced to describe the connectivity reliability of nodes under the influence of extreme events, and an uncertain bi-objective programming model with connectivity reliability maximization and transportation cost minimization as objectives is established for path selection. China’s maritime transportation network for crude oil imports is used as a case study to validate the model, the effects of variations in the model parameters on path selection, transportation cost and connectivity reliability are discussed in the case study. The research results provide a basis on which for government decision makers to better plan crude oil transportation strategies.

Abstract:The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established various emission reduction regulations to limit ship emissions. Ships can choose among several energy system strategies to meet relevant regulatory requirements, and choosing the right energy strategy can maximize the ship's profitability, which is particularly important for shipping companies. In this paper, several shipping industry information such as emission reduction regulations, ship parameters, and energy strategy characteristics are integrated, and the potential connection between the ship scheduling approach and alternative energy system strategies is considered. Then, a more efficient energy strategy selection model is proposed based on life cycle analysis, which is solved by a designed dynamic programming method. Compared with the state of the art, this paper provides a novel way for shipping companies to link changes in ship scheduling behavior to energy strategy choices, which was ignored by previous studies. The proposed method is applied to a 5,000 Twenty-feet Equivalent Unit (TEU) container ship. The results show that, compared to the traditional method, the proposed model allows to select more appropriate energy system strategies and to increase profitability by nearly 30%. And traditional approaches underestimate the profitability of fuel switching and installing open-loop scrubbers, the proposed approach may prompt shipping companies more towards adopting the above two energy system strategies. In addition, the proposed model can help shipping companies effectively cope with fuel price fluctuations. Finally, compared to other carbon reduction policies, the incorporation of ships into the carbon trading system will encourage them to use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), thereby effectively reducing ship CO 2 emissions.

Abstract:With the strengthening of economic globalization, the volume of international maritime industry trade is increasing, but the development of coastal logistics industrial parks and the quality of cooperation between logistics companies have exposed many problems. The paper establishes an evolutionary game model. The model covers major factors such as operating costs, transaction costs, default costs, overall revenue and distribution ratios of both parties. During the numerical simulation, in response to changes in some main parameters, we give the results of the cooperation between the two parties, which provided a reference for further research.

Abstract:Ship′s mobil mooring system has many advantages, such as precise positioning, less investment and power consumption, and easy control. So it is widely used in ships at the sea. In this paper, the force characteristics of the ship′s mobil mooring system are analyzed, an optimal control model of the ship′s mobil mooring system is put forward, and the method of Quasi-static mooring line analyses is presented. As an example, an eight-line ship′s mobil mooring system is analyzed and computed.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of Chinese crude oil consumption and implement of State Crude Oil Storage Plan,China's imported oil volume is increasing fiercely these years.To reduce its transport cost,crude oil importers are urgent to find out an economic transport network.According to the fact that imported oil is transported generally by chartering foreign VLCC,a modified transport problem model is built in the paper and typical import routes are chosen to form an optimized transport network.This optimization result could be a reference for Chinese crude oil import transport.
