Abstract:Objective To explore the feasibility and preliminary effect of minimally invasive surgery unicompartmental knee arthroplasty(MIS-UKA) for medial compartment knee osteoarthritis of patients older than 70 years. Methods All of 21 consecutive patients older than 70 years(24 knees)with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis were treated with MIS-UKA.Incision,surgical time, blood loss, drainage and complications were measured. The pre-and post-operative function of the knees were evaluated by HSS score system. The pre-and post-operative range of motion(ROM) and alignment of the lower limbs(hip-knee-ankle angle) were measured and compared. Results All cases were followed up for average 18 months(12~24 months). At the last follow up,all cases achieved significant relief of pain, improvement of HSS score and correction of varus deformity. But ROM was not significantly improved, and none had complications of infection, fat embolism, deep vein thrombosis, malposition of prosthesis, dislocation and loosing. Conclusion MIS-UKA is an effective alternative for the treatment of medial compartment knee osteoarthritis of patients older than 70 years, however, further long-term studies are required.
