Abstract:The process model of workflow is the primary and the most important aspect of workflow application. It is inevitable to introduce structural conflict during workflow model specification. But now workflow management systems lack an effective method to verify the workflow model with circular structure. The paper first defines directed cycle with semantic integrity (DCSI) according to workflow model structural character and proves the necessary and sufficient condition under which DCSI can construct circulation correctly, and then brings forward a method to reduce circular structure and a strategy to search all instance subgraphs of the workflow model. Basing on the instance subgraphs, we accomplish the process of analyzing and correcting syntactical errors of the workflow model. Furthermore, the validation analysis of the workflow model also can be accomplished by contrasting the instance subgraphs with the desired outcome of the workflow model. After that, we discuss the approaches to reduce the complexity of workflow model verification.

Abstract:Workflow scheduling has been extensively studied to improve the system performance. However, existing approaches are usually built on predefined workflow graph structure, neglecting the possibility that a workflow graph itself may be changeable when certain conditions are satisfied. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the concept of graph refactoring that transforms certain types of sequential tasks to run in parallel without changing system's functionality. We first provide a classification for task dependencies in workflows and identify that previously sequential task ordering in loose control dependency can be scheduled to run in parallel as long as supporting services are trustworthy. With this concept, we present a refactoring algorithm to traverse, restructure, and parallelize loose control dependencies in the graph when the reputations of related executing services are above certain threshold. In addition, refactoring effects on common sub‐graph structures are analyzed and discussed. In practice, our algorithm can be integrated into existing workflow management systems as a preprocessor to generate a new functionally equivalent working graph with more concurrent branches for further scheduling. Experiments and analysis show that graph refactoring can improve the system performance scalably because of concurrent execution of previously sequential tasks. Verification And Reduction Of Cyclic Structure In Workflow Model

Abstract:As the foundation and focal Point of workflow application it is unavoidable to introduce the structural conflict during the establishing of workflow model. However, the currently existed verification method of workflow mode has limitations. An effective method that can be used to verify arbitrary workflow model is required. After the investigation of the workflow model, we rind that the cyclic structure can make the workflow model more complex. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the cyclic structure of Workflow Nets(WF-net). The method for establishing the transition invariant (T-invariant) subnet of WF-net is proposed, then the necessary and sufficient condition for the T-invariant subnet with sound structure is given. In further study, a verification and reduction method of cyclic structure of WF-nets is put forward. This method not only can point out the error in the cyclic structure and find what causes the error, but also can reduce the sound cyclic structure. After the reduction, a WF-net with cyclic structure is reduced to a WF-net without cyclic structure, then many reduction methods can be used to realize the sound verification of a WF-net without cyclic structure. In the end, the time complexity of the verification and reduction process is discussed.

Abstract:A workflow schema is an abstract description of the business processed by workflow model, and plays a critical role in analyzing, executing and reorganizing business processes. The verification issue on the correctness of complicated workflow schemas is difficult in the field of workflow. We make an intensive study of it in this paper. We present here local errors and schema logic errors (global errors) in workflow schemas in detail, and offer some constraint rules trying to avoid schema errors during modeling. In addition, we propose a verification approach based on graph reduction and graph spread, and give the algorithm. The algorithm is implemented in a workflow prototype system e-Scope Work.

Abstract:The performance and reliability of workflow execution are highly dependent on the scheduling algorithm. However, existing approaches usually confines the scheduling on the predefined workflow structure, neglecting the possibility that a workflow graph itself may be changeable when certain conditions are satisfied. Abstract:As the scale of software systems is growing rapidly, software complexity is becoming one of the main problems in software engineering. Higher complexity in software increases the potential risk and defects of software system, which makes it more difficult to analyze the correctness and improve the quality of software. In this paper, we present an automated refactoring schema to reduce the complexity of the component-based software. The main idea of our approach is to search a hierarchical software with a minimum hierarchical complexity and refactor the original software into it by reassembling several subcomponents into tightly coupled hierarchical ones. Besides, our approach can be easily adjusted to deal with some new situations, in which several types of constraints on partition of software components are given. Finally, we conduct a case study with Battery Management System (BMS) and the result demonstrates our approach can automatically and effectively reduce the structural complexity of software system.

Abstract:In the era of Internet and big data, contemporary workflows become increasingly large in scale and complex in structure, introducing greater challenges for workflow modeling. Workflows are not with maximized concurrency and block-structuredness in terms of control flow, though languages supporting block-structuredness (e.g., BPEL) are employed. Existing workflow refactoring approaches mostly focus on maximizing concurrency according to dependences between activities, but do not consider the block-structuredness of the refactored workflow. It is easier to comprehend and analyze a workflow that is block-structured and to transform it into BPEL-like processes. In this paper, we aim at maximizing both concurrency and block-structuredness. Nevertheless, not all workflows can be refactored with a block-structured representation, and it is intractable to make sure that the refactored workflows are as block-structured as possible. We first define a well-formed dependence pattern of activities. The control flow among the activities in this pattern can be represented in block-structured forms with maximized concurrency. Then, we propose a greedy heuristics-based graph reduction approach to recursively find such patterns. In this way, the resulting workflow is with maximized concurrency and its block-structuredness approximates optimality. We show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach with real-world scientific workflows.

Abstract:Scientific workflow systems are typically describe coordinations involved in data processing via a workflow definition language. However, current specific workflow definition languages, even adopted by current mature scientific workflow systems, are too complex and enormous for non-professionals. In this paper, we mainly discuss how to design a workflow definition language using XML schema to suit a lightweight workflow system in a specific domain such as astronomy and astroinformatics. The prototype system shows that a simple but intuitive workflow definition language can simplify the modeling procedure and make end users easier and more accurate to implement their research tasks in e-Science activities.

Abstract:Modeling of the processes of scientific research activities is a fundamental problem that confronts scientific-workflow applications.This paper analyzes the internal structure of a data-oriented scientific workflow in both user operation form and computer processing aimed toward the Chinese Virtual Observatory.Based on the analysis modelings using the pipe technique and XML are studyed separately.To overcome the flaws of the pipe-based modeling,we propose a Scientific Workflow Description Language(SPDL) based on the XML schema.The SPDL has characteristics of high-level Abstraction and high representing capability to support a lightweight scientific workflow system.Results from analysis and experiments show that the language can describe coarse-grained scientific research activities and satisfy the requirement of dataflow-oriented modeling.

Abstract:Model refactoring is emerging as a desirable means to improve design model by restructuring it while preserving the behavior properties. It applies the concept of refactoring to a higher level of abstraction and makes refactoring more convenient and effective. Model refactoring always arises at design phase, but unfortunately, 7(days) times 24(hours) high availability requires that refactoring takes effect at runtime without stopping the running systems. In this paper, we present a middleware-based approach to applying model refactoring for component based applications at runtime. First of all, ill-structures in an application are abstracted as bad patterns, each of which has at least one good pattern abstracting the refactored part in the application without the ill-structure. People can define the bad/good patterns using a MOF-based metamodel. After that, with the help of middleware, the ill-structures will be automatically detected and removed by refactoring the running application under the guide of predefined patterns.

Abstract:In this paper, the features of XML schemata are studied, and several algorithms and their problems on the transformation from the XML schemata to the relational schemata are analyzed. Then the algorithm XTR is presented, and the method to preserve semantic constraints is discussed. The results of the algorithm XTR are better than those of the algorithms analyzed according to the normal form, and the many-to-many relation can be translated in the algorithm XTR.

Abstract:Considering the demand of the date relationship and service request multiform based on XML documents,this paper proposed a new frequent pattern tree algorithm for selected incremental vector items set of refactoring XML structure(XFP-tree).Bases on the XML Key,the algorithm firstly dealt with XML structure to vector matrix,then used project frequent pattern tree to optimize the XML structure through dissociating,uniting,updating and canceling to satisfy the conciseness of the XML structure and query multiversity.Combining project and tree-structure manipulation,this paper discussed the dividing rule of xml key vector matrix frequent pattern.This rule improved the algorithm efficiency by establishing heuristic strategy and support thresholds.Contrasted with other algorithms of Association Rule,a series of emulation experiments show that this method has the effectiveness and feasibility as an efficacious attempt of refactoring XML structure.

Abstract:To present hierarchically and manage the workflow data information,a structured data model（SDM） is proposed.It can organize the workflow data into document information form（DIF） by the data type of serial,parallel,condition and loop.The mathematical definition of these data types is given in this paper.Tree structure is used to organize and describe the DIF.The paper studied a method which can directly generate composite form through SDM.This form contains not only the attributes that needed to be processed,but also the hierarchical relationships between attributes,which is friendly and easy for terminal users.

Abstract:Adaptive workflow management systems allow workflows to be changed in both the modeling and runtime stages, resulting in many workflow variants. Identifying a minimum sequence of high-level changes between two workflows represents a fundamental yet critical issue. The state-of-the-art approach utilizes digital logic to seek the optimal solution; however, this approach may face difficulties when advanced workflow patterns (e.g., loops) are involved, and it does not scale well. To address this problem, we first propose a naive approach that applies all valid changes to one workflow until the other workflow is found. Then, the approach is optimized from two aspects. First, we present advanced heuristics that significantly reduce the search space without pruning the optimal solution. Second, we employ the A* search algorithm to direct the search procedure. Because the heuristic function used in the A* algorithm is problem specific, we devise a consistent heuristic function to approximate the edit distance between two workflows, thereby accelerating the search. We implement our approach in a prototype tool and conduct extensive experiments on two data sets to evaluate its effectiveness and efficiency. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state of the art in terms of both application scope and scalability.

Abstract:Refinement operation of workflow net is provided in this paper for modeling and analyzing complex workflow. Firstly, a series of concepts are defined for formalizing the refinement operation of workflow net. Then the structure, behavior and dynamic properties preservation of the refinement operation are studied. These works prove that a reliable refined workflow net preserves not only properties such as soundness, but also dynamic behavior, that is, behavior of the refined net is consistent with of original net and subnet. Moreover based on behavior preservation, the net language of refined net can be resolved by the language of the original net and subnet, which can reduce complexity of model analysis. Finally, the usability of the research results presented in this paper is illustrated by an example.
