Abstract:We propose and demonstrate by simulations a novel Nyquist-WDM (N-WDM) superchannel transmitter based on an arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR). This approach can generate Nyquist pulses at multiple wavelengths using a single AWGR. Results for a 3-channel 960-Gbit/s QPSK superchannel system show that a 10% guard band reduces the inter-channel interference (ICI) sufficiently. The design introduces less than 0.16-dB penalty when the waveguide loss is 2 dB/cm and 0.73-dB penalty when the standard deviation of phase error is 10°. Such Nyquist pulse shapers can be realised on a chip scale using photonic integrated circuits technology, and could be compactly integrated with other functional components to create single-chip N-WDM superchannel transmitters.

Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated a silica-based 16 x 16 cyclic arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR) with improved channel loss uniformity using a simple mode-field converter composed of a slab coupling region and auxiliary waveguides placed at the interface between the arrayed waveguides and the output star coupler of the AWGR. The mode-field converter transforms the fundamental Gaussian-shaped mode in the arrayed waveguides to a complex mode field which produces a flat-top far field at the image plane of the output star coupler. It does not change the overall construction of the AWGR and does not increase the device size. The experimental results show that loss non-uniformity for a 16 x 16 AWGR with 1.6 nm wavelength channel spacing is reduced from 3 to 0.5 dB after adapting the mode-field converter, and the crosstalk is improved by about 2 dB. Abstract:We present a novel photonic approach for generating switchable multi-format chirp waveforms with the capability of anti-chromatic dispersion transmission using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). The key functions of the switching among up-, down-, or dual-chirp waveforms and the anti-dispersion transmission are both realized by controlling the bias voltage on the applied modulator. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the generation and switching of chirp waveforms centered at 4.5 GHz and 4.8 GHz with a bandwidth rate of 0.4 GHz/ $\mu \text{s}$ under back-to-back condition. Besides, another experiment on the transmission of the generated 4.8-GHz signals along dispersive optical fiber is also demonstrated, which verifies the dispersion-induced power fading can be successfully eliminated.

Abstract:An integrated 16 × 16 cyclic-arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR) targeting C-band DWDM routing applications with a channel spacing of 100 GHz is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Measurement results show that the maximum channel deviation is around ±7% of its channel spacing with the 3-dB bandwidth wider than 0.4 nm for all port combinations, and the minimum insertion loss and the worst crosstalk are about 1.64 dB and 30 dB, respectively.

Abstract:We propose a novel method to achieve cyclic arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) router with uniform channel insertion loss over the entire free spectral range (FSR). By appropriately distributing the pointing directions of the arrayed waveguides at the output star coupler to the entire output waveguide array instead of the central output alone in conventional design, the optical energy of different wavelengths can be uniformly distributed to different output waveguides. The simulation results show that such a design can substantially reduce the channel insertion loss nonuniformity from 3dB to less than 1 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate an arrayed waveguide grating based on silicon nanowires with birefringence compensation for optical interconnects using coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM). Angled star couplers are employed in combination with different diffraction orders for TM and TE polarizations. This device has a compact footprint of 0.36 mm x 0.17 mm. Theoretical and experimental results show that the polarization-dependent wavelength shifts (PD lambda) can be reduced from 380-420 to 0.5-3.5 nm, below 25% of the 3 dB bandwidth of channel response. The measured cross talk for TM polarization is better than -18 dB, and that for TE is better than -14 dB. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We present compact silicon-arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) with three different channel spacings of 20, 6.4, and 3.2 nm for optical interconnect systems. The AWGR with the 20 nm channel spacing shows a low loss of 2.5 dB and a low crosstalk of - 20 dB and has a footprint of only 0.27 mm x 0.19 mm. The AWGR with the channel spacing of 6.4 nm has loss ranging from 3 to 8 dB, and the crosstalk is - 18 dB. As for the 3.2 nm channel spacing, the loss is about 4 dB, and the crosstalk is - 12 dB.

Abstract:We design and experimentally fabricate a 8×8 arrayed waveguide grating router(AWGR) with a channel spacing of400 GHz based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The arrayed waveguide region of this device is horseshoe-shaped to realize a small footprint of 730 μm × 580 μm. Experimental results show good cyclic performance. The crosstalk and insertion loss are about -21 dB and 2.7 dB, respectively. This compact device can be used in optical interconnect systems.

Abstract:A cyclic arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) router based on silicon nanowire waveguides with uniform channel insertion loss is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Different from conventional design, the directions of arrayed waveguides are no longer pointed to the central output waveguide, but are adjusted according to a distribution function. The experimental results show that the channel insertion loss non-uniformity is reduced from 2.7 dB to 1.1 dB. This uniform loss design does not change the overall construction of AWGs, and does not increase the device size.

Abstract:We present silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based cyclic arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) with improved channel loss uniformity in the full free spectral range (FSR) by using dual-tapered auxiliary waveguides between the ends of arrayed waveguides. The field distribution at the image plane of the output free propagation region (FPR) is adjusted by the auxiliary waveguides and a flat-top shape can be obtained by appropriate optimization. 8×8 and 15×15 AWGRs with optimized auxiliary waveguides, having a channel spacing of 3.2 nm and 1.6 nm, respectively, are fabricated and the measured loss non-uniformity is less than 0.5 dB, significantly improved by at least 1.5 dB compared with conventional AWGRs.

Abstract:A compact silicon arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR) for optical interconnects is experimentally demonstrated. The design, fabrication and characterization of this 4x4 AWGR with a 1250 GHz channel spacing and a 5 THz free spectral range are discussed. The loss of the AWGR varies from 2.5 dB to 5.5 dB and the crosstalk is better than -18 dB. The functionality of the AWG as a router and its good rotation property are also presented. This device has a compact footprint of 0.46x0.26mm(2).

Abstract:We analyze the impact of aberration on spectral performance of silicon-based arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) router with the conventional design using a constant pitch along the grating circle for the array waveguides near the free propagation region (FPR), and simulation results show that due to existence of large aberration, side lobes occur in spectral responses of peripheral output channels for the center input light while more serious side lobes appear in most output channels within a free spectral range (FSR) for the edge channel input. Therefore, there is a high crosstalk in conventional N x N silicon AWG, which is very detrimental for router applications. In order to address it, a simple design with a constant projected period on a line tangent to the grating at its pole for the array waveguides near the FPR is proposed, and aberrations of all output wavelengths within a FSR are kept at a rather low level both for the center and edge input. Then we fabricate two kinds of AWG routers with the conventional and proposed design respectively on a SOI wafer, and experimental results show that spectral responses of the AWG router with the proposed design are significantly improved compared to those obtained in the conventional design, especially for the edge channel input. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) optical wavelength demultiplexing is demonstrated by employing multilevel arrayed waveguides as a 2D diffraction grating, named the 2D arrayed waveguide grating (2D-AWG). Since the monochromatic lightwave is diffracted by the 2D-AWG to a series of periodic spots with 2D diffraction orders in both x and y directions while the dispersion direction is never parallel to the x or y direction, we can obtain 2D wavelength demultiplexing exploiting diffraction orders of either the x or y direction. One of the two dispersion components is designed much larger than the other, and the correspondent spatial free spectral range component is set properly to ensure high diffraction efficiency. The input and output ports can also be designed based on the multilevel lightwave circuit (MLC), and their level planes can be tuned parallel to that of the MLC-based 2D-AWG, which makes it feasible to integrate the 2D-AWG with the input port and/or the output port. It provides a promising way to realize large-scale and high-density optical multiplexers/demultiplexers. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A novel method for designing a cyclic echelle grating wavelength router with uniform loss and flat passband is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A 4×4 cyclic wavelength router with a channel spacing of 400 GHz at 1550 nm wavelength band is designed and fabricated in InP. Measurement results show that the loss of 16 input-output combinations varies from 9 to 19.3 dB in a conventional design, with a nonuniformity of 10.3 dB, while the 1-dB spectral bandwidth is only 0.3 nm. By rotating angles of grating facets according to an appropriately designed distribution function, the loss nonuniformity is reduced to 1.5 dB, and a flat-top spectral response with 1 dB bandwidth of 1.0 nm is achieved simultaneously.

Abstract:A design method for compensating polarization dispersion in arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) based on highly birefringent silicon nanowire waveguides is proposed by using angled star couplers in combination with different diffraction orders for TE and TM polarizations. Polarization-dispersion compensation for all output channels is achieved with the maximal polarization-dependent wavelength shift of 0.025 nm in an eight-channel AWG with 200-GHz spacing using 380 nm x 220 nm silicon waveguide with SU-8 upper-cladding.

Abstract:In this paper we review our work on birefringence compensated arrayed waveguide grating. We elaborate on a birefringence compensation technique based on angled star couplers in arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and discuss several demonstrations both in low-index-contrast and high-index-contrast material systems. A 16-channel AWG with 100GHz channel spacing for DWDM application is designed and fabricated in silica-based low-index-contrast waveguide. The experimental results confirm that the polarization-dependent wavelength shift (PD lambda) can be tuned by varying the incident/diffraction angle at the star couplers and a birefringence-free property can be achieved without additional fabrication process as compared to conventional AWG. A further validation of this technique is demonstrated in high-index-contrast silicon-on-insulator waveguide, in combination with different diffraction orders for TE and TM polarizations. A birefringence compensated silicon nanowire AWG for CWDM optical interconnects is designed and fabricated. The theoretical and experimental results show that the PD lambda can be reduced from 380-420nm to 0.5-3.5 nm, below 25% of the 3 dB bandwidth of the channel response in the wavelength range of 1500 to 1600nm.

Abstract:Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is a promising technology for constructing high-speed large-capacity WDM switches, because it can switch fast, is scalable to large size and consumes little power. To take the full advantages of high-speed AWG, the routing control of a massive AWG-based switch should be as simple as possible. In this paper, we focus on the self-routing design of AWG-based switches with O(1) constant routing complexity and propose a novel construction of self-routing AWG switches that can guarantee the attractive nonblocking property for both the wavelength-to-wavelength and wavelength-to-fiber request models. It is expected that the proposed construction will be useful for the design and all-optical implementation of future ultra high-speed optical packet/burst switches.
