Abstract:Hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres with high-density functional groups were successfully prepared based on an effective basic selective etching strategy. In this work, thiol-functionalized hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres were synthesized by the etching of cyano-SiO2@thiol-SiO2 and vinylSiO(2)@thiol-SiO2 core-shell composite particles. The composite particles were fabricated, respectively, via a two-step sol-gel reaction of different organosilanes. The different alkali resistance between the inner core and the outer shell of the composite particles is the key to fabricating hollow silica nanospheres in this paper. When the core-shell composite particles were treated with Na2CO3 and NaOH, the thiol functionalized outer shell showed higher stability than the cyano and vinyl functionalized inner core. The inner core, which is less stable under alkaline conditions, will be etched off in base, resulting in a hollow structure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results demonstrate that large-scale hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres can be obtained through this method. In addition, it is also found that the morphology of samples may be regularly changed by manipulating the concentration of alkali in the etching process. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) confirm that the thiol groups exist in the organic functionalized hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres obtained. We expect that this facile strategy can be extended to fabricate organic functionalized hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres with more other valuable functional groups.
Simultaneous formation of silica-protected and N-doped TiO2 hollow spheres using organic–inorganic silica as self-removed templates

Abstract:Synthesis of N-doped TiO2 hollow spheres with a small grain size, large surface area and high degree of crystallinity is favorable to achieve an overall high photocatalytic activity. But traditional synthetic approaches generally involve many tedious steps and are time-consuming. Here we present a facile method to synthesize N-doped TiO2 hollow spheres using organic silane-doped silica nanoparticles as templates. The organic-inorganic silica can be simultaneously etched during the deposition of TiO2 shell to create a thin silica layer on the TiO2 surface. Such a thin silica layer can efficiently protect the TiO2 nanocrystals from growing larger during high-temperature calcination. At the same time, the organic silane can serve as a nitrogen source to be doped in the TiO2 shell. The developed silica-protected and N-doped TiO2 hollow spheres can be directly employed as photocatalysts without SiO2 etching and show obvious light utilization in both UV and visible bands.

Abstract:Decreasing the shell thickness of TiO2 hollow spheres is a promising route to achieve an overall enhanced photocatalytic performance. However, in traditional synthetic approaches, the thin shell can not guarantee the structural stability of the TiO2 hollow spheres in the following calcination process to achieve a high degree of crystallinity. In this paper, ultrathin porous TiO2 hollow spheres with good structural stability, high degree of crystallinity as well as in small grain size were prepared through a novel etching and reconstruction route using amorphous SiO2/TiO2 hollow spheres as precursor. With hot water as etchant, the removal of SiO2 leads to the reconstruction of TiO2 hollow spheres and receiving a thinner and thinner shell. Such thin shell enables the exposure of more catalytic active sites of TiO2 nanocrystals and the improved photogenerated charge transfer and separation. Meanwhile, the residual SiO2 on the TiO2 shell protects the TiO2 nanocrystals from growing larger during high-temperature calcinations. The as-obtained ultrathin porous TiO2 hollow spheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen production from water in comparison with those with thicker shell.

Abstract:Generating hollow structure inside titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) is a widely used method to improve its liquid-phase oxidation catalytic performance in industry. However, traditional dissolution-recrystallization method usually required a large amount of aqueous solution of organic template, leading to unfavorable polluted waste, low production efficiency, and high manufacture cost. Here, a facile and environmental friendly strategy was proposed for the post-synthesis of hollow TS-1 zeolite with a solvent-free method utilizing NH 4 HCO 3 and tetrapropylammounium bromide as selective etching agents, which reduced the usage of organic template and avoided the liquid waste. The high crystallinity, the microporous structure, and the active Ti sites were preserved at a high product yield (> 93%). The formation mechanism of hollow structure was also investigated by exploring effects of different reactants and experimental parameters. Meanwhile, the obtained hollow TS-1 showed an outstanding performance in the epoxidation of 1-hexene in comparison to the parent zeolite.

Abstract:Porous Silica Gel was synthesized via Sol-Gel process with phase separation using TEOS as raw materials,thermal stability,microstructure and of which were studied by the heat treatment and by means of IR,TG-DTA and SEM.The adsorption property of porous silica gel for cerium ions in solution was studied by discontinuous process,providing some references to the processing of high-level liquid waste.The experimental results show that the synthesized porous silica gel with good thermal stability and high porosity has good adsorption properties for cerium ions in solution;For given initial concentration of cerium ions,with increasing the rate of solid to liquid the equilibrium adsorption capacity decreases while the equilibrium adsorption rate increases and the equilibrium adsorption ratio increases afterwards decreases when the rate of solid to liquid is 3:500.

Abstract:Hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell were synthesized with the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polystyrene (PS) hollow spheres as dual templates. The key to this study is that the uneven surface of the template provides nucleation sites for mesoporous nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell. The final products with hierarchical mesopores can be obtained through a simple one-step approach.

Abstract:This paper presents a general and feasible method for the fabrication of uniform hollow mesoporous nanocomposite silica spheres (HMNSs) loaded with functional nanoparticles (Au, Pt, Fe3O4, etc.) on their inner walls. In this approach, carboxylic-capped polystyrene (PS) spheres were first synthesized by a soap-free emulsion polymerization and then deposited on a layer of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). Next, the functional nanoparticles were self-assembled onto the surfaces of the PS spheres through electrostatic interactions between the negatively-charged citrate groups and the positively-charged PDDA layer. After encapsulation of the hybrid shell derived from the sol-gel process of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and n-octadecyltrimethoxysilane (C18TMS), followed by calcination, various HMNSs loaded with functional nanoparticles such as Au@SiO2, Pt@SiO2, Fe3O4@SiO2, etc. could be fabricated. This approach allows the control of the numbers of functional nanoparticles loaded into the hollow spheres very easily and prevents nanoparticle aggregation effectively. As a prototype, the as-obtained Au@SiO2 HMNSs displayed very good catalytic reusability.
Controllable Preparation Of Ultra-Low-Dielectric Nanoporous Silica Via Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Templates

Abstract:Four organic-inorganic hybrids were respectively synthesized via hydrosilylative addition reaction between octahydridosilsesquioxane (POSS) and linear dienes with different numbers of methylene groups, and well characterized by FTIR, C-13 NMR and Si-29 NMR technologies. It is confirmed that the hybrids have well-defined three-dimensional network structures with POSS cages uniformly dispersed in the networks. The four hybrids were then used as templates to produce silica films through an optimized spin-coating and calcination process. N-2 sorption-desorption determination reveals that the silica films are nanoporous with a narrow pore distribution. Cross-section HRTEM images of the four films further confirm that the nanosize pores are evenly dispersed. SEM observation shows that the surfaces of the films are smooth and free of cracks or flaws. By altering the number of methylene groups of the dienes linking the POSS cages, pore size and porosity of the porous silica films are easily adjusted. After dehydroxylation treatment with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS), the porous films show very low dielectric constants, which is closely related to the porosity of the film. This result reveals that the controllable preparation of low dielectric silica films has been achieved in this study.

Abstract:In this paper, different organic group-functionalized mesoporous ethanesilicas have been synthesized by the co-condensation of 1,2-bis-(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTEE) and organosilanes under basic conditions, using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template. High quality mesoporous materials were obtained with MCM-41-type structure. But the employing of different organic groups, such as vinyl, aminopropyl, glycidoxypropyl, mercaptopropyl, leads to different morphologies. The ratio of organosilane to BTEE also affects the mesostructures and morphologies of the final materials. Using the similar method, Ce-doped mesoporous ethanesilica was also obtained.

Abstract:Porous hollow silica particles possess promising applications in many fields, ranging from drug delivery to catalysis. From the synthesis perspective, the most challenging parameters are the monodispersity of the size distribution and the thickness and porosity of the shell of the particles. This paper demonstrates a facile two-pot approach to prepare monodisperse porous-hollow silica particles with uniform spherical shape and well-tuned shell thickness. In this method, a series of porous-hollow inorganic and organic-inorganic core-shell silica particles were synthesized via hydrolysis and condensation of 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTEE) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a structure-directing agent on solid silica spheres as core templates. Finally, the core templates were removed via hydrothermal treatment under alkaline conditions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to characterize the particles′ morphology and size distribution, while the changes in the chemical composition during synthesis were followed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) was applied to assess the monodispersity of the hollow particles prepared with different reaction parameters. We found that the presence of BTEE is key to obtaining a well-defined shell structure, and the increase in the concentration of the precursor and the surfactant increases the thickness of the shell. TEM and spICP-MS measurements revealed that fused particles are also formed under suboptimal reaction parameters, causing the broadening of the size distribution, which can be preceded by using appropriate concentrations of BTEE, CTAB, and ammonia.

Abstract:This work focuses on engineering the pore orientations and pore sizes of mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) in one pot. Core-shell structured MSNs possessing dual mesochannel orientation in one particle and tunable larger mesopores (3.0-7.3 nm) have been synthesized by using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template with the aid of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB). The formation of penetrating and radial mesochannels in the respective core and shell has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and N-2 sorption techniques and has been further confirmed by the two-step adsorption and desorption curves for lysozymes. Moreover, the pore sizes, core sizes and shell thicknesses of dual-oriented MSNs can be easily tuned by varying the TMB content and the synthesis temperature. The mechanism investigations suggest that the initially formed silicate species with penetrating channels act as nuclei for the radial arrangement of cylindrical micelles for the formation of dually oriented mesostructures, in which TMB can control the pore orientation and pore diameter by affecting the kinetics of the solid silica formation and the swelling of the CTAB micelles.
Structure-dependent adsorptive or photocatalytic performances of solid and hollow dendritic mesoporous silica & titania nanospheres

Abstract:<p>Two types of titania-containing dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (DMSNs) have been successfully fabricated for organic dyes removal, water splitting, and carbon dioxide reduction by their adsorptive or photocatalytic performances. Hybrid dendritic mesoporous silica&titania nanospheres (DMSTNs) were initially prepared by grafting tetrabutyl orthotitanate (TBOT) onto DMSNs. Then, hollow dendritic mesoporous silica&titania nanospheres (HDMSTNs) were realized merely by etching the solid DMSTNs with alkaline solution. The surprising structural evolution from the solid state to the hollow was thoroughly revealed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) for the first time. DMSTNs maintain the dendritic morphology with spherical TiO2 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed. HDMSTNs not only keep the dendritic topology, but also possess the hollow texture with TiO2 nanoparticles unevenly dispersed and aggregated. DMSTNs and HDMSTNs exhibit excellent adsorption capacities for methylene blue, while the latter shows improved adsorption capacity. DMSTNs and HDMSTNs can hardly adsorb methyl orange (MO), nevertheless, the two materials can photodegrade MO with outstanding abilities. Amazingly, the latter exhibits decreased degradation capacity despite of its hollow architecture and higher content of titanium oxide. Furthermore, DMSTNs and HDMSTNs display higher photocatalytic activities over hydrogen generation than that of carbon dioxide reduction under visible light. However, DMSTNs and HDMSTNs show various photocatalytic selectivities and activities for the production of carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4). In short, DMSTNs and HDMSTNs have distinct structural superiorities as adsorbents or photocatalysts for different photocatalytic reactions, respectively.</p>

Abstract:Monodisperse and uniform high-quality MCM(Mobil Composition of Matter)-48-type CMSNs (Cubic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles) are readily prepared by simply optimizing the molar ratio of ethanol and surfactant in the system TEOS-CTAB-NaOH-H2O-EtOH (TEOS=tetraethyl orthosilicate, CTAB=cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, EtOH=ethanol). In the absence of ethanol only hexagonal mesoporous silica with ellipsoidal and spherical morphology are obtained. The presence of ethanol drives a mesophase transformation from hexagonal to mixed hexagonal/cubic, further to purely cubic, and finally to a mixed cubic/lamellar. This is accompanied by a morphology evolution involving a mixture of ellipses/spheres, regular rods, uniform spheres, and finally a mixture of spheres/flakes. Preserving the three-dimensional (3D) cubic MCM-48 structure, use of a small amount of ethanol is beneficial to the improvement of the monodispersity of the CMSNs. Moreover, the quality of the CMSNs can also be controlled by changing the surfactant concentration or adjusting the stirring rate. All MSNs were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and N2 physisorption, indicating highly long-range ordered pore arrays, high specific surface areas (max. 1173 m2g-1) as well as high pore volumes (max. 1.14 cm3g-1). The monodispersity of the CMSNs was verified by statistical particle size distribution from SEM (scanning electron microscopy)/TEM (transmission electron microscopy) images and DLS (dynamic light scattering). The mesophase transformation can be rationalized on the basis of an ethanol-driven change of the surfactant packing structure and charge matching at the surfactant/silicate interface. The corresponding morphology evolution can be elucidated by an ethanol-controlled hydrolysis rate of TEOS and degree of condensation of oligomeric silicate species via a nucleation and growth process.
A facile and environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of hollow silica particles in a self-stable dispersion

Abstract:The fabrication of hollow silica particles is of interest from both academic and application viewpoints. In this paper, we propose a distinctly novel method by which hollow silica particles are successfully fabricated in a self-stable system without any surfactants during a self-consumptive templated process. In detail, it was carried out by adopting a two-step feeding of tetraethoxysilane including initial dropping and subsequent addition of residual TEOS in one batch. The synthesized hollow particles have been extensively characterized using a scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and N(2) sorption analysis. The results indicated that the morphology of the resultant hollow silica particles was governed by simply changing the volume ratio of the precursor added in two steps, the reaction temperature and the concentration of ammonia. Additionally, the mechanism governing the formation of the hollow silica particles is discussed.

Abstract:This article presents a novel and facile preparation method of hollow silica spheres with loading small silica inside. In this approach, positively charged SiO2/Polystyrene core-shell composite particles were synthesized first, when the silica shells from the sol-gel process of tetraethoxysilane were then coated on the surfaces of composite particles via electrostatic interaction, the polystyrene was dissolved subsequently even synchronously in the same medium to form hollow silica spheres with small silica cores. TEM, SEM, and FTIR measurements were used to characterize these composite spheres. Based on this study, some inorganic or organic compounds could be loaded into these hollow silica spheres. Abstract:A novel silicotitanium molecular sieve Na4Ti4Si3O10(NaTS) for cesium removal with high Ti/Si was synthesized successfully by sol-gel hydrothermal method using TIPT as the titanium raw material. The effects of Ti/Si, NaOH/Ti, temperature, reaction time on the cesium removal ability were discussed systematically. Also the framework structure of NaTS products was characterized by FI-IR and porous analysis. Experimental results show that the pore size of the sample ranges from 15 to 30 nm, the specific surface area is 1.811 x 10(2) m(2)/g and average pore size is 8.700 nm. Ion exchange tests show that NaTS has a high selectivity for cesium in acidic solution. When in 0.1 mol/L HNO3 and 0.1 g/L Cs+ solution, the distribution coefficient K-d is as high as 36 500 g/mL, which may be used as a promising cesium exchanger in acidic HLLW.

Abstract:Chemical functionalization on nano-scaled silica particles was performed through the reaction between the silanol group of silica and the oxirane ring of epoxy compounds. The occurrence of the surface functionalization and the chemical structures of the resulting products were characterized with FTIR and H-1 NMR. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry and transmission electronic micrography observation on the silica particles also confirmed the surface functionalization. This approach provides another method to organically functionalize nano-scaled silica particles and can be applied to the preparation of organic-inorganic nanocomposites.

Abstract:This article reports on a novel category of hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of a unique organic core (composed of optically active helical polyacetylene) and an inorganic shell (composed of silica). The NPs were synthesized by combining in one system the aqueous catalytic microemulsion polymerization of substituted acetylene monomer to form the core and the sol gel approach of TEOS to form the shell. The substituted polyacetylene forming the core adopted helical conformations of predominant one handedness while the silica shell provided desirable protection for the core. The obtained emulsions exhibited high stability. The NPs possessed large optical activities, arising from the helical polymer chains constituting the core. The investigations are important in chemistry since two diverse research fields (organic helical polymers and inorganic materials) were combined for the first time in a specific system. The obtained hybrid core/shell NPs induced enantioselective crystallization of alanine enantiomers, attesting to the potential applications of the novel core/shell NPs.
